PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Dog Balks at Wheelchair DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 9-yearold Shih Tzu “Mitzi” developed a hip problem due to an injury she suffered when much younger (she was a rescue). It’s become almost impossible for her to walk, and her veterinarian recommended she start using a “wheelie” harness to get around. The problem: Mitzi will not use the harness. It’s a struggle to get her into it, and then she just kind of lays there and whimpers once she’s in it. How can I get her to adjust to the harness? -- Claude C., Atlanta DEAR CLAUDE: You’ll need to try a couple of things: check the fit of the harness, and use some gentle encouragement (ahem, treats) to help Mitzi. According to Eddie’s Wheels, which designs wheelchairs and support devices for pets, dogs that still have feeling or some mobility in their hind legs sometimes have more trouble adjusting to wheelchairs than dogs whose hind legs are paralyzed. Also, a poorly fitted wheelchair can cause a dog to feel uncomfortable in the harness. So, check the fit of the wheelchair based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. If Mitzi’s wheelie allows her back legs to touch the ground, make sure that she can do so. This may alleviate her anxiety. If her back seems hunched, make sure the straps are at the correct length so she’s comfortable. If her back sags in the harness, she may need more support. And make sure her backside isn’t lifted into the air; this can cause strain on her front legs. Once the fit is OK, give Mitzi lots of encouragement as you help her into the harness each day. Then, as she progresses, give her a reward at each step: when she first stands up in the harness, when she takes her first step, and so on. Always make it a positive experience, until she gets the hang of her new wheels. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. Adopt an “out with the old, in with the new” mantra. Resolve to discard old items after purchasing new ones or receiving birthday or holiday gifts. Hanging on to old items because they can still function and serve some utility is a recipe for a cluttered home. Anytime you or a family member brings a new item into your home, make sure the item it’s replacing finds its way out the door.

Here’s a better idea: how about paying off medical debts instead, especially for cancer patients? School loans are a choice, cancer is not. Memories I thought of this year, 2021,a lot; the loss of people you love that are not here, and the appreciation of others who are here. – The Mother
The best present Instead of spending all your time running around, looking for the toy your child wants, why not give them the best present ever: your time? With all the problems out in the world today such as the shortages of supplies, Covid-19 and its mutations, and all of the environmental disasters, we could better use this time to remember what the season is all about and put Christ back into Christmas. Road work Again, [local road] is closed in the same location by the same dip with no word when--if ever--it will be repaired. Why am I paying taxes in this town? It has been 35+ years that I have been here. I curse the day that I bought this property. It seems like the only solution is to move out of [local town] and New York State. Death of a senator The death of former Senator from Kansas, Robert Dole, was a sad day for the United States. It’s a shame that all politicians aren’t like Senator Dole in that he loved his country and put it ahead of his political party. He knew how to work together with his opponents to come up with a solution that would best serve the country as a whole. It may be too late for most of us to say thank you to him, but all politicians can still say thanks by following his lead in putting the welfare of our country ahead of their political party. Drink, Drive & Toss I’m so disgusted with my neighbors or the users of my rural, partially-seasonal and dead-end road. As I walk my dogs and constantly pick up your garbage, “the beer can bandit” and “the tea tosser,” among others, are weekly and randomly tossing beer cans, tea containers, and other containers out of their vehicles’ windows. They apparently continue to drink and toss while driving down this road. It is so disheartening that these selfish people have no regard for the environment or for others.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Bipolar Disease Takes 4 Different Forms
$129 NEW PATIENT SPECIAL
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible for a person to reach the age of 70 and just now be diagnosed with bipolar disorder? Are there degrees of impairment, like with autism -- some worse than others? -- C.S. ANSWER: The hallmark of bipolar disease is mania. “Mania” has a specific meaning in psychiatry: It’s a very elevated mood, associated with high amounts of energy and an inability to think clearly, especially to see the consequences of one’s actions. Some common features of people in a manic episode include an inflated sense of self-worth, distractibility and racing ideas. People can be very talkative and feel little need to sleep. Dangerously, people in a manic phase can spend large amounts of money and have many sexual indiscretions. All diseases have a spectrum of severity, and some are quite wide. With bipolar disease in particular, however, there are four distinct forms of the disease. Bipolar I is the classic form, once called “manic depressive illness,” where people have episodes of mania, alternating with periods of normal behavior or depression. People with Bipolar II have depressive episodes and some “hypomanic” episodes: periods of high energy (and sometimes profound productivity), usually without the negative aspects of the “full” manic episode. Cyclothymia is a rapid cycling between hypomania and mild depression. There is a fourth type, “unspecified,” where people have abnormal mood elevations but don’t meet criteria for the other types. Bipolar disease usually has its onset in early adulthood, but sometimes in teens or even childhood. However, I have rarely seen bipolar disease diagnosed in someone as old as 70. It isn’t always clear whether the disease is just manifesting that late, or whether it has been around for many years, but compensated for by the person. Some people don’t interact with a lot of family or friends, and manic or hypomanic episodes might be missed. It’s possible the 70-year-old in question has a quite mild form. Treatment for bipolar disorder can dramatically improve the quality of life of the person and of the family and friends affected by the illness.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Looking Out for No. 1
Depending on where you live, you might be required to delay surgery because the hospital is full of COVID patients. That’s the news that’s spreading around the country. It gets worse. If you have an emergency, the ambulance might be a long time in coming because they don’t have enough EMTs, or they might have to come from an adjacent town. Once you get to the hospital, you might be treated in a hallway because no exam rooms are open. The biggest issues to keep us from needing medical attention are physical safety and health. I’ve gone around my house to look at every inch of floor space to be sure there’s nothing that I could possibly trip on. I moved the laundry basket to the closet instead of leaving it near a path where I walk. In the living room I changed one frequently used lamp from a 50-75-100 watt bulb to one that brightens things up with 75-100-150 watts. I removed two small throw rugs ... just got rid of them. Other things might seem small, but really aren’t. I found a balance class on YouTube and I’m following along every other day. I also found several videos on improving flexibility and stretching. When it comes to diet, I made a quick call to my doctor’s office and inquired about vitamins. I was told that a low-dose vitamin C would be appropriate three times a week, and to add an orange to my diet the other days. Ask your doctor before you do this. As much as I hate not being able to select my own items, I’ve gone back to picking up grocery orders at curbside to stay out of stores. It’s up to us to take care of ourselves. That’s the bottom line when it comes to our health and safety. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.

Color Penfield Green: Leading the Way with Climate Conscious Initiatives BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
s 2022 begins, the environment and climate change continue to concern many. At least 15 of New York State’s Finger Lakes Region communities have partnered with an organization called the Climate Solutions Accelerator to begin taking action. Penfield is one such community, thanks in part to resident organization, Color Penfield Green. Color Penfield Green (CPG) is part of the greater Color your Community Green movement and the Climate Solutions Accelerator (CSA). CPG is a grassroots effort dedicated to educating individuals and working to move town officials to make environmentally friendly changes. “Color Brighton Green inspired us with the whole idea of a community group,” said CPG leader, Katie Rygg. “We are all volunteers and include a junior effort called Color your School Green.” Rygg acts as the liaison between the adult CPG and the student CSG. A prime example of one of CPG’s successes are Penfield’s Community Choice Aggregation. “This is my passion project, started by my fellow CPG volunteer, Al Hibner, before CPG started,” shared Rygg. “About three years ago, he formed a residents committee to see if we could implement a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA). Now, we are implementing Penfield’s new program with more eco-friendly options, including 50% and 100% renewable electricity.” Rygg also credits Penfield residents for lobbying the Town Board to make these “green” options a reality and praised the Town Board for offering these options. Color Penfield Green has seen other successes, as well. It’s clean energy classes have been gaining momentum. “45 people took our NYS Clean Energy Communities: Community Campaign for Electric Vehicles course with us through the Penfield Recreation Department,” stated Rygg. CPG plans to offer this course again and will be partnering with Heat Smart Monroe to offer a second class under the Climate Solutions Accelerator umbrella in the spring. “It is Penfield residents teaching Penfield residents,” explained Hibner. “If 10 people purchase or lease electric vehicles, our town would receive $5,000 for sustainability projects. We are also starting a process for clean heating and cooling. We can earn up to $10,000 for these two campaigns. Why not use renewable energy?”
Joe Gersitz and Katie Rygg (l-r) tabling at the Greater Rochester Clean Cities EV Car Show!
Yet, even with these “green” victories, there is much work to do. “I have two small children, and I would love to see them riding electric school buses,” said Rygg. “I know this is the direction we are going.” She explained that current diesel buses only get about 4-10 miles to the gallon of fuel. “Electric school buses are coming,” Rygg continued. “The community support is there, and we can make things happen. We have already presented on this to parent organizations and our town, and there has been a lot of positive response there. We are hoping Penfield’s new busing
●
facility can be ready to roll with electric school busses.” CPG’s outlook is hopeful as the town considers the feasibility of such an undertaking. “We realize there is more to do; that we have to stand up with Color Penfield Green and do more,” said Hibner. “These local groups are a sweet spot for creating change. State and national changes are good, but they can be challenging. When working with local municipalities, you can organize quickly in your home community and meet with your officials quickly. It just flows naturally. These are your friends and neighbors with whom you are working and whom you are helping. We can help others find likeminded people in their communities, or, if there is not a group already, we can help them start one.” Hibner and Rygg both added that they appreciate Penfield’s historic support. “Penfield built a 5-acre solar farm to supply up to 80% of the energy needed to power their government buildings,” they said. “We want to compliment them and to support them in doing even more.”
We realize there is more to do… that we have to stand up with Color Penfield Green and do more.
Interested in learning more? Check out Color Penfield Green’s blog. You’ll find information on everything from electric cars to renewable energy. Visit the Finger Lakes Region’s Color your Community Green website at climatefl. org/color-your-community-green.
Another CPG campaign that has been wildly successful is its Healthy Yards initiative through Healthy Yards Monroe County. “We met with the Penfield Parks Department,” said Rygg. “We want to make sure our parks have more native pollinator plants, use best practices for healthy soil, and reduce pesticide use.” Rygg credited fellow volunteer Megan Meyer for her hard work on this campaign.

By JoAnn Derson * Generally, for every degree you lower your thermostat during heating season, you reduce your energy costs by 3%. * Just in time for soup season (and my new year’s resolutions), here’s a great fat swap: Drain and rinse 2 cups of white beans and puree with a cup of no-sodium vegetable broth. You can use this as a thickener in place of heavy cream for soups and stews. -- JoAnn * To keep snow off your windshield, use a flannel-backed tablecloth stretched to cover both windshield and wipers. Put it flannel-side to the glass. Then you’ll be able to lift it (and the snow) off your windshield to drive. * Wondering what winter fruits and vegetables are in season? Here’s a sampling: apples, dates and pears, as well as citrus, like grapefruit, oranges and tangerines. For vegetables, consider endive, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, kale, leeks, mushrooms, parsnips, radicchio, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, turnips, yams and winter squash. * “Want to keep your pants from creasing on the hanger? Grab an empty paper-towel tube and slit it down the side. When you slip it over the bottom of the hanger, it creates a wide curve for the pants to lie across, and no more crease!” -- M.U. in Colorado * Remember that as temperatures drop and layers of clothing increase, children in a car seat need special consideration. Remove heavy coats before strapping in a small child or baby. Winter wear can compress during an accident, and it interferes with the straps.

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
