GIFT-WRAPPING TIPS AND TRICKS

HOW TO KEEP GIFTS SECRET AND HIDDEN

Wrap on a firm surface Devote a table or counter to wrapping gifts. This will keep the paper taut and neat and make it easier to cut and position. You risk tearing the paper or puncturing it when working on carpeting or bedding.

Invest in a nondescript, opaque shopping tote that will not draw attention to where you have shopped. Retailers love to emblazon their shopping bags with names and logos, and that can cue savvy kids and adults as to where you shopped.

Serendipity: How a Lost GoPro Camera became a House Payment BY DP DUNN

O

nce upon a time, in August, during a torrential rain, the storm drain clogged and the garage flooded. Again. A service was called. They removed two feet of roots from the system.

Problem solved, right? Nope. The town of Webster’s Highway department sent a crew and two big trucks. They removed a bushel’s worth of hard sediment from the easement. Now it’s fixed, as evidenced by more than an inch of rain over the last weekend of October. Hegedorn’s Donuts are a great way to say ‘Thank you.’ Monday morning, fresh from the oven to the crew at Webster Highway at 6:45 AM. It is the Feast of All Saints, and Mass is at 9; what to do for 90 minutes? Webster Park’s shoreline was wild with waves and wind. The normally calm lake was alive. Waves crashed along the pier and the sidewalk on the south shore. Walking to the end of the pier, without getting soaked, might be a challenge. Somewhere along the sidewalk, a bright fluorescent orange rectangle beckoned. It was heavy. Upon closer examination, it was a GoPro camera in what GoPro calls a ‘floaty case.’ These things ain’t cheap. A bit of research, a call to GoPro and the serial number was found. GoPro had no record of the camera having been reported as lost. The memory card was accessible and undamaged. Photos were found. A local blogger, Missy Rosenberry, writes a wonderful blog on the happenings in Webster. You can read her work at WebsterOnTheWeb. com. An email to Missy, with photos extracted from the memory card, and a simple request: can you help reunite the camera with its owner? Within two hours of posting the article on her social media feeds, Missy got results! The first replies identified the house. A subsequent reply was from the camera’s owner. Ollie Bartholomew, his lovely wife Raquel, and their beautiful children were visiting family and friends in the Webster area last July. A bumpy jet ski ride on Lake Ontario jarred the GoPro’s magnetic mounting loose from the machine. GoPros can’t swim. Even with a scientifically

designed and remarkably engineered fluorescent orange ‘floaty case,’ they can’t float. Not when a heavy magnet is attached. Ollie circled his jet ski. Ollie dove for the camera. No luck; Ontario’s water was too murky and the Lake jealously hid her newly acquired GoPro camera well in deep water. Months passed. Neptune took mercy on Ollie and family and loosened the grip on the camera. It bobbed and floated. Winds blew and waves crashed. Maybe ducks and lake trout nudged it in the right direction. Somehow, providentially, it landed on a sidewalk, partially covered by driftwood and other detritus. By week’s end, through social media and emails, it was on its way back home.

“SERIOUSLY, YOU JUST CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP.”

Now, Ollie is a stand-up fellow. He knew how incredible the odds were against ever recovering this camera, and more importantly its contents of irreplaceable family memories. The scolding from Mrs. Ollie had made the magnitude of the loss breathtakingly clear to him. Ollie made a generous offer to both the Finder and the Blogger. ‘$100 to each of your favorite charities in gratitude for this find and your efforts!’ What a guy. As it happened, a friend and former co-worker of the Finder is fighting ALS. A GoFundMe page for Kevin Woolever, of Newark, has been established to aid in mortgage payments and medical equipment costs during his illness. The Finder asked Ollie to contribute. Missy, the Blogger, generously offered her reward to Kevin’s cause as well. What a gal! But Ollie and Missy went farther in their generosity. Each, through their social media sites, spread the word to others. And that, my friends, is how a clogged storm drain became a box of donuts, which led to a walk in the park, which led to the discovery of a lost GoPro camera, and became a contribution to an ill friend. Seriously, you just can’t make this stuff up. The End. Or is it? Join this Merry Band of adventurers, and read more on Missy’s Blog at https://websterontheweb.com/2021/11/06/the-powerof-kindness/. If you wish to make a contribution for Kevin, his site is https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-kevin-save-the-house and Thank You! Enjoy this article? Randy Green CARPENTRY 585-554-5221 PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

585-802-1544 REALIZE ENERGY SAVINGS WITH 1 SIMPLE STEP A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES

WINTER ENTERTAINING IDEAS Get physical. Get physically active with friends or family members by staging mock Olympic events in the yard. These can be fun “sports” created by participants or variations on fun winter activities. Sledding races, snowball dodging contests, ice skating obstacle courses, and much more can make for an entertaining afternoon.

Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

PATIENT-CENTERED RESPECTFUL COMPASSIONATE WELCOMING

By Sam Mazzotta

Her Dog Won’t Stop Licking His Paws

Customized Health Plans to Meet Your Unique Needs

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My hound dog “Charlie” licks his front paws nonstop, and sometimes his back paws, every time he lies down. He’ll lick the top of his paws and in between the pads. The skin on top of his paws is starting to get raw. I’ve checked his paws and can’t see any cuts or ticks. Why is he doing this, and how can I stop it? -- Lee F., Ocala, Florida DEAR LEE: Go ahead and schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. Charlie could be licking his paws for a few reasons. One, a physical injury or infestation -which you wisely checked for first. Two, an underlying condition that is causing Charlie discomfort, like a muscle or bone injury, or arthritis. Three, a compulsion to lick his paws. The vet should do some bloodwork to rule out underlying disease. He’ll do some other tests to determine if arthritis is a factor. And he’ll check for allergies, which can cause itchy skin in dogs. Depending on what he finds (or doesn’t find), the vet will help you plan a course of action to stop the licking. It’s important to stay on top of this because dogs who keep licking or biting at the same spot can develop lick granuloma. This is a red patch of skin that is sore and itchy, and a dog’s licking just makes it worse. Eventually, it can turn into a red lump of skin. The granuloma can become infected, requiring antibiotics to resolve. And if the granuloma doesn’t heal or gets really large, it may need to be removed surgically. Work with the vet to find the cause of Charlie’s discomfort and resolve it. Treatment may take a month or more, but it will be worth it.

DID YOU KNOW? Despite the ongoing efforts to study cancer and cancer treatments, in many ways the disease remains a mystery to researchers and medical professionals alike. According to data published by the research-based healthcare company Roche, for reasons that are not entirely understood, breast cancer is more common in the left breast than the right. The left breast is 5 to10 percent more likely to develop cancer than the right breast. The left side of the body is also 10 percent more vulnerable to the skin cancer melanoma than the right side of the body. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Give the body time to recover. Whether it’s more time between sets of repetitions or an extra day off between workouts, a fatigued body might just need more time to rest and recover. Aging men and women must recognize that they might not be capable of pushing themselves as hard as they once did and should adjust their workouts accordingly.

percentage of orthopedic injury to the elderly is directly related to their falling while walking large animals, specifically dogs over 20 pounds. Can you shed light on this please? -- M.F. ANSWER: A March 2019 study in JAMA Surgery did identify dog walking as an increasing cause of fracture. Over 4,000 fractures were identified among dog walkers over 65 in 2017, about triple the number 10 years earlier. However, this wasn’t a large proportion of fractures (only about 2% of total fractures), and the authors did not identify the size of the dog as a risk factor, although they did suggest that clinicians recommend a smaller (and well-trained) dog as a wiser choice. Dogs not only provide some social support, they also encourage exercise. I have had many patients (and a few family members) who have very meaningful connections with their dogs and other animals. In fact, I have seen many people who describe their animal companions as the most important relationship in their lives.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am scheduled for a hip replacement operation because X-rays show joint failure. I am 81 years old and in excellent health. At the moment I do not feel any pain in my hip and am walking very easily. I go swimming three times a week. My question is whether I should agree to this operation as a preventive method to avoid later painful and possibly riskier circumstances because of my age. -- P.H. ANSWER: Hip replacement is indicated in people with severe, debilitating symptoms (such as pain or loss of function) despite conservative management. That doesn’t sound remotely like what you are describing. The findings on the X-ray are less important than your symptoms and function, so I could not recommend a hip replacement for you at this time. Age by itself is not a contraindication for hip replacement should you need one later on. I do understand what you are saying: You are less likely to have a surgical problem being operated on earlier. Some surgeons will operate on people with milder symptoms for this reason. However, you aren’t describing even mild symptoms, hence my recommendation against surgery at this time. ***

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Christmas Dinner in a Parking Lot My senior center is going to hold its annual Christmas dinner outdoors in the parking lot. If that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye about the sad state of our world now, nothing will. Santa will arrive by limo behind the fire truck, we’re told, and will make his rounds through the tables set up across the asphalt, little elves at his elbow passing out presents. Students from the high school choir will sing while others from the culinary arts classes (they’ll get extra credit) will hustle the food and drinks outside and serve it. Parking will be wherever you find it around the neighborhood. In the middle of December? In New England? Why, some of us wanted to know, did they not simply use the town’s rec center? That large space would allow the tables to be spread out, with plenty of parking right outside the door. Best of all, it’s indoors where there’s heat. But no, they decreed, the dinner has to be next to the senior center where the kitchen is. A poll of friends indicates a mixed review of this whole idea. One laughed and said no, he absolutely would not be there. Another said he’d been recruited to set up tables and bring the decorated tree outside, hoping he can find an extension cord long enough to plug in the lights. One adventurous soul decided she will indeed be there, wearing a down comforter over her winter coat, which will be over several other layers of clothing, including snow pants. (She’s also bringing a Thermos of hot coffee and is practicing eating while wearing gloves.) One only hopes someone has put the town plow-truck driver on notice. He might be called upon to plow out the parking lot that day before the dinner. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.

S E V RA Borg & Ide Imaging, Brockport I just went for my dreaded mammogram. I always go once a year to get it done. Aleshia was very kind and friendly during the test. She was kind enough to ask me if I was all right as she positioned me for the X-rays. Thank you for all of your hard work! See you next year! Thank you, kind and cheery lady! Thank you to the kind lady who materialized almost out of nowhere on October 22nd, 2021, and offered to help me carry a trunkload of boxes into the Stafford Post Office. Their combined weight came to over 125 pounds, and this angel cheerfully took the majority of them in. As a senior citizen, I was a bit apprehensive about how I was going to manage the task, and she was an answer to a prayer. My gratefulness to Sal, as well, for his efforts in getting them prepared for shipping. I will pay your kindness forward! Thank you from a Vet I'd like to recognize a true patriot and gentleman: Chuck Anderson. I've been going to Anderson's 56 Barber Shop for years. Chuck should be recognized for giving all Vets a free haircut on Veteran's Day. He refused all payments and tips. It sure made the Vets feel appreciated. - Truly Grateful, Woody Help for Afghan families Thank you, Livingston County residents, for your generosity in donating over 1,600 items of toilet paper, paper towels, bodywash, hand and dish soap and $500 in gift cards to Catholic Family Center for Afghan families. Sixty-five Afghan individuals have been welcomed to the Rochester area with another 30 individuals expected soon. CFC refugee staff have been working 6-7 days a week doing everything they can to welcome these families. Thank you for being so supportive.

Had to chuckle I nearly fell off my seat reading the Rant titled “What an Idiot!” First, why wouldn’t Joe Manchin be concerned about coal mining? His state of West Virginia’s livelihood depends on this very thing. He is doing what he feels is best for his state (unlike most governors). I’m glad Biden went to the summit without a deal. What a waste of money! But what really made me chuckle was “the earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in....” Give me a break; I’m 64 and have heard this my entire life. Seems like every 5 years or so, we only have a few more years! Climate change is phony; it’s political and a ploy to take away our livelihoods, money (taxation), and freedoms. One other thing: let’s impeach all Democrats and most Republicans as well; sure, we can start with Manchin. Trash Talk Whenever I take my walks in rural [local] County, I bring an empty garbage bag to pick up trash. Thought I’d already seen everything in that realm until today when I found a 7-foot-long fluorescent light tube discarded on the side of our road. Thankfully, it was still intact; if it was broken, the toxic mercury inside would’ve been released. That’s bad anywhere, but here that’s extra bad since we live in a watershed. The following information isn’t for the idiotic person responsible. Anyone that thoughtless wouldn’t bother reading this column. For those who do care about proper disposal, here are no-cost options. If you live in one of the four GLOW region counties (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming) you can take florescent tube bulbs to an annual Hazardous Waste Disposal collection. Also, at any time, you can do a drop-off at a Lowe’s store location. If you only have one or two bulbs, you needn’t make prior arrangements. If you have a large quantity of discards, call the store first. Idiotic You are foolish to be speeding through a small subdivision where I live and have two kids. You are gaining nothing and putting lives in danger. I can hear the tires squealing around the bend and the slamming on the brakes, and for what? To get home and turn on your TV? You’re a clown. They should tear up the road so your suspension gets destroyed as punishment for your stupidity.

HOMETOWN

James Edward Soback “Jamie” November 17, 2021 Canadice/Honeoye: November 17, 2021 at age 47. Jamie was born on June 18, 1974 in Dansville, NY to parents Edward and Debra (Rumfola) Soback. STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING A will is an important component of estate planning. Without clearly and legally spelling out your wishes, there is no guarantee that those wishes will be honored. It will be up to a state or province to make potentially lifealtering decisions that can impact your surviving family members, and the only way to ensure your wishes will be carried out is to put them into a will. Although men and women can write their own wills, many people prefer to seek the assistance of an attorney, who can make sure all necessary details are included in the will.

How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
