This is the feast-time of the year When hearts grow warm and home more dear; When Autumn’s crimson torch expires To flash again in winter fires; And they who tracked October’s flight Through woods with gorgeous hues bedight, In charmèd circle sit and praise The goodly log’s triumphant blaze. ~Harriet McEwen Kimball (1834–1917), “The Feast-Time of the Year,” c.1880

585-229-5116 PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance. According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength. Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES When working at home, make sure to use tools in the manner in which they were designed. Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommended rung or engaging in risky behavior while on the ladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far. When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings. Page 7

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

You’re Never Too Old for HPV Infection ---
5650 County Road 41, Farmington website:DavesDiggs.com 585-261-0012 cell Email: ddiggs@rochester.rr.com Tues.-Sat. 10am-5pm BCB & BBB accredited
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your recent column stating that the HPV vaccine is recommended up to age 45. Are people older than 45 years no longer susceptible to HPV? Asking for a 52-yearold friend (who thinks he’s Wolverine). -- C.F. ANSWER: The comic character Wolverine has a mutant healing ability (that’s how he was able to survive having his bones replaced with adamantium), so he has nothing to worry about. However, non-mutants do have to worry about HPV, which can come from any kind of skin-toskin contact with a person who has HPV. Having the virus often means having warts, but sometimes people can have contagious HPV without having any visible lesion. It’s been estimated that 90% of people with HPV don’t know they have it. People of any age are susceptible to HPV. Most people have been exposed by age 45, which is why the recommendations are the way they are now, but vaccination might make sense in some situations. The clearest example is someone who has had very few sexual partners and is about to become more sexually active (for example, a person recently divorced or widowed). Although the vaccine is not indicated by the Food and Drug Administration in this situation and the person is likely going to have to pay out of pocket, it might still be worth it to get the vaccine to reduce the risk of acquiring a new sexually transmitted HPV infection. I received several letters from people who acquired new genital warts in just this situation who were upset that their doctor did not offer the vaccine. If people have already been exposed to HPV, the vaccine will not harm them. In fact, there is some anecdotal evidence that the vaccine might help people with difficult-to-treat warts by boosting the immune system specifically for HPV.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL
HI! My name is Hailey Marie. I am a 3 year-old Calico. I have a seat at the window where I will sit for hours watching my squirrel & deer friends.
A season by any other name . Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox.

THE PERFECT SETTING As those planning funerals continue to look for ways to make their funerals and burials more consistent with their own values and preferences, there has been a shift toward selecting more personal settings. Instead of choosing to conduct a funeral in the funeral home, nearly half of those responding to a National Funeral Directors Association survey indicate that they have attended a funeral at a nontraditional location. These include outdoor settings, homes, and other locations to which the deceased enjoyed a particularly emotional or physical attachment. With this and other important matters in mind, the funeral director is prepared to incorporate any and all of a funeral planner’s wishes into a comprehensive plan that best commemorates an individual’s life.
Puzzle Answers This Week
Historically, when it came to planning a funeral, we turned to religious traditions. While religion is still an important consideration, more and more people look for secular ways to reflect the person’s complete life. To meet the unique needs and budgets of every family we serve, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME offers a diverse range of funeral services and products. If you have any questions about our funeral and memorial services, please call (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. That’s perfectly understandable, as life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents. Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
It’s Time to Review, Renew Medicare This is that time of year, again, when we need to make decisions about Medicare plans. From Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, we are eligible to compare our coverage between the original Medicare, Advantage plans and the Part D drug plans in open enrollment. They change every year, and we need to know how those changes will impact us. To compare plans, go online to Medicare.gov and click on Preview 2022 Health & Drug Plans. Click on the plans you’d like to see and enter your ZIP code. If you want to compare drug costs, enter that data as well. Have pen and paper on hand and do the math. While it’s said that the average Advantage plan will come down $2, the average drug plan will go up that much. Beware the deductibles. If you have an Advantage plan and think you want to continue it, read the fine print. If you’re used to having benefits for glasses, gym membership or other things, check to be sure you’ll still have those. Compare all of the plans to get what you need. If you have a Part D drug plan and need insulin, be especially careful in selecting your plan. An additional 500 plans will include insulin this year, but again, read the fine print to be sure it’s what you need. A warning: Be sure your drugs are covered. If you have questions you can call 1-800-MEDICARE, 24/7, to get help. You can also seek assistance at the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) for your state (www.shiphelp.org). If you are low income or have a disability, you might be eligible for the Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). They help pay for premiums and deductibles, as well as co-payments. Go online to cms.gov and search for Medicare Savings Programs. Click on one of the four categories for more information and income limits. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE Pick your destination Anywhere with deciduous trees provides the opportunity to witness blazing autumn color. During leaf-peeping season, travelers can go coast to coast and see awesome vistas. Some regions are particularly known for their leaf displays. New York’s Catskill and Adirondack regions are prime spots for visitors in the autumn. Those who live further north will find that leaves in Vermont are such an attraction that routes are published indicating where to enjoy the best views. Further south, Central and Eastern Virginia peak in late October. And don’t forget the shores of the Great Lakes, which are awash in reds, oranges and yellows by mid-September. The travel resource Frommer’s offers more leaf-peeping locales to visit.

Where are we headed? It is being said that sales in some industries are the lowest that they have been since the Great Recession. The price of gas continues to climb; industries continue to suffer from a lack of workers and a shortage of supplies; the national debt continues to mount, and inflation continues to rise. Cargo ships sit off the US coast, unable to unload their goods. Every day you see the shelves in the stores get barer with no relief in site. I am reminded of stories told by my grandparents of the Great Depression, when you were given ration coupons for food due to its scarcity. How long before we have to ration our food?

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

Pet Sitting Goes Awry
1-800-724-8747 www.grouptoursinc.com
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last month, I agreed to pet sit for a friend while she and her boyfriend went on vacation. I did this for free because I love pets and want to see if pet sitting as a business is right for me. Bitsy, her 3-year-old cat, was a joy to care for ... the first week. On Monday of the second week, I came to take care of her and Bitsy was laying in the middle of the floor, lethargic. I scooped her up and took her straight to the veterinarian, who thinks she either ingested a toxic houseplant or spoiled food. After fluids and rest at the vet, Bitsy is doing much better. But my friend is angry with me because the vet’s bill is very high. She says it’s my fault that Bitsy got into her houseplant. I followed my friend’s instructions to the letter. Why is it my fault? What should I do? Sign me -- Confused in Denver

DEAR CONFUSED: I’m glad Bitsy is doing better. You did the right thing by taking her in for medical care. My advice is to give your friend a little time to process everything that happened. You’ve explained your side already. Hopefully with a little breathing space she will be able to think more clearly and then the two of you can talk and decide what to do. When you open your pet sitting business, take this as a lesson learned. Spell out terms very clearly, stating that the pet owner is responsible for any vet bills incurred due to illness or injury. You can learn much more through groups like Pet Sitter International (https://www. petsit.com/) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (https://petsitters.org/). Autism Nature Trail Opens at Letchworth BY LOREN PENMAN Photo: The entrance to The Autism Nature Trail (The ANT) at Letchworth State Park!
A
fter seven years of work, The Autism Nature Trail (The ANT) project opened to the public on October 1, 2021. A first-of-its-kind interactive experience in nature, the Trail is designed specifically for those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities, but appropriate for all abilities and ages, located in the #1 state park in the country — Letchworth State Park in Wyoming County. Statistics show that young people with autism spend a staggering amount of time in front of digital screens and that individuals and caregivers often can experience feelings of isolation. The ANT – a series of safe spaces and sensory stations in deep nature and far from the distractions and often overwhelming stimulus of everyday life – will be the “ANT-idote” amongst it all. Activities along the Trail support and build sensory perception and integration, while also providing enjoyable activities for families, school groups and agencies. Eight sensory stations tap into the visitor’s auditory, visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive processing, using nature and natural materials as the tools for skill-building. Both quiet engagement and active exploration are encouraged along The ANT, with added elements such as cuddle swings, gliders and “alone zones” throughout the one-mile loop. Trail markers tell visitors what to expect around each bend, important for creating purposeful consistency and predictability. Dr. Susan Hyman of the Levine Autism Clinic in Rochester called The ANT “The ANT-ithesis of inactivity.” While other entities are making public places accommodating, The Autism Nature Trail is making an accommodating place public. THE INNOVATORS BEHIND THE TRAIL
They convened a consultant team composed of Drs. Amy Laurent and Jacquelyn Fede of Autism Level UP!, Rick Hauser of in. site: architecture, Rusty Keeler of EarthPlay and Zac Rood and Declan Keane of Trowbridge Wolf Michaels Landscape Architects, along with an Advisory Panel of 17 specialists to ensure design elements would provide the appropriate physical and mental benefits to Trail visitors. CALL FOR COMMUNITY SUPPORT The ANT has garnered the support of New York State officials, New York State Parks, Camp Puzzle Peace in Rochester, the Perry Central School District, researchers and tourism and economic development players. It now needs everyone’s support to raise $300,000 in additional private and public dollars to staff and maintain the Trail long-term. The Autism Nature Trail is an inclusive place to thrive, to learn, to grow and to find acceptance and activity for all. To learn more about The ANT, visit autismnaturetrail.com.
Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com: • Someone You Love is Living with Dementia—Now What? Part I
The ANT concept was born back in the summer of 2014, when CoFounders Susan Herrnstein of Perry and Loren Penman of Batavia developed a conceptual model for a nature trail that would serve and benefit the ASD community. They wasted no time getting advice from the top, seeking out Dr. Temple Grandin, a professor and autism spokesperson from Colorado State University and enlisting the help of a third CoFounder, Gail Serventi, retired Clinical Supervisor at the speech and hearing clinic at SUNY Geneseo.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

DID YOU KNOW?
OPEN HIRING EVENT!
How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures. EMPLOYMENT
