Pen-A-Poem CONTEST WINNER Lawrence R. Berger

Hungry, Hungry Hearing Aids

They screech like baby birds calling for their mother Feeding time They have worked hard all day Bringing me the joyous news from the radio: 19 cases in this county 105 cases in that The entire country is trying to "flatten the curve" As the world watches The stock market crashed Food is getting hard to find And we're just ending week one. But My electric bill is paid And the hungry, hungry hearing aids Settle down like swaddled infants when I put them in the charger Enjoy my little ones For tomorrow The dance begins again.

DID YOU KNOW? The American Association of Poison Control Centers says that fatal and nonfatal poisonings overwhelmingly occur among adults. This is largely attributed to the opioid epidemic in the United States and overdoses linked to prescription medications. The National Safety Council says more than 90 percent of nonfatal poisonings and 99 percent of fatalities attributed to poisonings occur in adults older than 19. The NSC says that, in 2019, the most recent year for data, there were 65,773 preventable poisoning deaths in the United States.

Is Pet Sitting A ProfitableCareer? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m a high school student and I’m thinking about what kind of career I’d like to have after I graduate three years from now. I’m not sure college is for me, and I like being around pets -- my family has two dogs and a cat, and I have a flop-eared rabbit. I’ve heard that pet sitting is a good business to be in. Is this true? Can I do that instead of college? -- Caryn H., Fort Walton Beach, Florida DEAR CARYN: Pet sitting is a huge and growing market, because almost every owner is going to need someone to watch their pet at some point. So, it’s certainly worth considering as a career. You can start your own pet-sitting business or go to work for someone else. This is a job that requires responsibility and self-discipline, because people are entrusting you with their pets. You have to show up at the agreed-upon time, follow the owners’ instructions to the letter, and make sure their pets remain happy and healthy. If dog-walking is part of the job, you’ve got to keep them under control and away from conflicts with other dogs. You’ve got to stay healthy, because a sick day is not an option unless you have someone to cover for you. Start by visiting the websites of two major pet-sitting organizations: Pet Sitters International (petsit.com) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). They offer resources, certifications and more. Talk to your parents and your school guidance counselor about your interest. They’ll support you and help you explore this career option. The Gospel Corner In the Book of Beginnings it says “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt Surely Die” Genesis 2:17. “A Word to the wise” has been used by many good parents. Do what you’re told to do and all will be fine. Rebel and you will suffer the consequences. Not Wise. “Die” in the context of this first warning, means to be separated from God. In John 3:7 Jesus said “Ye MUST be born again.” Speaking of the Spiritual birth NEEDED to escape the death in Hell forever, and receive the Spiritual Life promised by repenting of your sin and trusting Jesus ONLY for a home in Heaven forever. Eternity is a long time. Our day of death is imminent, make the WISE decision today.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

a concert and had to climb stairs. They ended up walking about 2.5 miles in total. After returning home, my daughter had severe pain in both of her feet and was unable to stand or walk on them. She said it felt like someone was crushing them. The pain did not get better, so she went to the emergency room a few days later. A doctor there performed an X-ray and said that the pain was due to bunions, although they did not even look at her feet. She also saw a foot specialist who told her that the diagnosis was neuropathy of the feet and recommended Neurontin for pain. He asked her if she has diabetes, but she does not. They told my daughter that she will have to live in pain for the rest of her life. The doctor recommended getting some tests done on her nerves at the hospital, but she doesn’t have money to pay for these tests. What can be done to help her? How is it possible that the pain started so suddenly? She is in constant pain and is unable to walk. -- K.B. ANSWER: “Neuropathy” is not a diagnosis; it’s a name for a diverse group of diseases that cause damage to the nerves, specifically signifying the nerves in the brain and spinal cord or those outside of them. The recommendation of getting nerve testing done is correct. This does sound like neuropathy from the little bit of information I have, although neuropathies do not typically begin with exercise the way you described. I have seen several cases where muscles have become terribly inflamed and even break down after a period of unusually strenuous exertion (this usually gets better with time), but I would have expected the doctors to make that diagnosis. There is a compressive neuropathy in the foot (tarsal tunnel syndrome) where the nerve is damaged by pressure from muscles, bones and connective tissue, but this happening to both feet at the same time would be surprising. Metabolic neuropathies, like B12 deficiency, cause symptoms on both sides but do not begin suddenly. I’d be worried about her lower spine. I don’t know what your daughter’s financial situation is, whether she might be eligible for Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, or whether there is a free medical clinic near you. I have had many patients make just enough money that they don’t qualify for Medicaid, but are unable to afford commercial insurance and don’t get it through work *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Vegan cuisine that packs a flavorful punch People who do not adhere to vegan diets may assume that such diets are void of taste. But vegan foods can be just as flavorful as more traditional alternatives. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Roasted Baby Parsnips with Sherry-Maple Glaze and Chanterelles” from Tal Ronnen’s “Crossroads: Extraordinary Recipes from the Restaurant That Is Reinventing Vegan Cuisine” (Artisan). When roasted, parsnips produce a sweet flavor, while the chanterelles provide a woodsy taste to prove that vegan foods can indeed be incredibly flavorful.

Roasted Baby Parsnips with Sherry-Maple Glaze and Chanterelles Serves 4 24 baby parsnips, trimmed, or 8 regular parsnips, root ends trimmed and peeled 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 2 tablespoons Earth Balance butter stick 1 shallot, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 pound chanterelles, wiped clean, quartered if large Finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, for garnish Flaked sea salt To prepare the parsnips, preheat the oven to 400 F. If using larger parsnips, peel and quarter them lengthwise so the pieces will be uniform in size and cook more evenly. Put the parsnips in a large mixing bowl, drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the oil, season with kosher salt and black pepper, and toss to coat evenly. Spread the parsnips out in a single layer on a large baking sheet and roast for about 20 minutes, shaking the pan from time to time, until tender and slightly charred. Set aside. (The roasted parsnips can be prepared a couple hours in advance, covered and held at room temperature. Reheat before serving.) Meanwhile, prepare the glaze. Combine the maple syrup, vinegar and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, swirling the pan around occasionally, until the mixture is reduced and syrupy, about 10 minutes. Cover and keep warm. To prepare the mushrooms, put a large sauté pan over medium heat and add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil and the butter substitute. When the butter substitute has melted, add the shallot and sauté until soft but not browned, about 1 minute. Add the garlic, tossing to combine. Add the mushrooms and sauté, stirring frequently, until they lose their moisture, soften and begin to brown, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat. To serve, crisscross the parsnips on a platter, overlapping them just slightly. Drizzle with the maple glaze and top with the mushrooms. Scatter chopped parsley on top and season with flaked sea salt. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ANSWER THE CALL (NAPSI)—When an emergency strikes, firefighters are there to answer the call. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that fire departments responded to over 35 million calls in 2016. What people may not realize is that the majority of these firefighters are volunteers, donating their time and energy to be there for those in need. “It really is neighbors helping neighbors,” said Steve Hirsch, volunteer firefighter and chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “There is nothing more rewarding than being a volunteer firefighter—we are there for our neighbors when they are having their worst possible day.” The need for volunteer firefighters is stronger than ever. While the number of calls has tripled in the last 30 years, the number of volunteer firefighters has decreased. This trend has become especially noticeable in the last few years. According to NFPA data, there were 682,600 volunteer firefighters in 2017, down from 814,850 in 2015.

Yard sales are popular ways to make money and clear homes of unwanted items.

Despite the decline, volunteers play a critical role in the nation’s emergency services, particularly in small and rural communities. Of the nearly 30,000 fire departments in the U.S., 83 percent are either entirely or mostly volunteer. These volunteers respond to nearly every type of emergency—structure fires, wildfires, medical emergencies, natural disasters, vehicle crashes, hazardous materials spills, search and rescue, active shooter threats, and more.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Feb. 22, 1959, Lee Petty edges Johnny Beauchamp in a photo finish to win the first-ever Daytona 500 in Florida. Beauchamp was initially named the winner, until Petty challenged the results using news photos.

“We need more people to step up and serve so that we can continue to provide critical life saving services in our local communities,” said Hirsch. “The biggest requirement is the desire to help others. The rest can be taught.” For those who want to help but aren’t able to commit to becoming a firefighter or EMS provider, volunteers are also needed to fill non-operational roles. Community members can join a department’s auxiliary program to provide needed support services such as fire prevention education, disaster planning, fundraising, administration, and much more. Volunteering with a local fire department takes commitment and dedication, but the benefits are many. Making a difference, saving lives, developing new skills, and being part of a close knit team are all reasons people choose to volunteer. “I’m a lawyer by trade, but I don’t think about that every day. I think every day about being a volunteer firefighter. It truly is the most impactful way I can serve my community,” said Hirsch. To find a local fire service volunteer opportunity, visit www.MakeMeAFirefighter.org.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS IN MIND (NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come. Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort. For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning. The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain. Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop. Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full. Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include: • Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching • Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users • Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can • Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean • Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch • Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too Learn More: For further facts about sinks and faucets that can make your kitchen safer, more efficient and even better looking, visit blancoamerica.com.

Elevator etiquette Please, when using an elevator, don’t stand directly right in front of the door and then try to rush in; there are people inside who need to get out first. This happens so much. I always stand to the side and then look in to see if anyone’s in there and when it’s clear, I get in. It’s not a pretty sight when you’ve got people trying to get in as people are trying to get out. Please use common sense.

Thank you I was in the Wegmans parking lot on Feb 2nd and this gentleman informed me that I had a flat tire. While I was sitting there trying to figure out what I was going to do, he came back with a machine to blow up my tire right there. I’m 88 years old, so this was a blessing from God. Thank you! Winter is so beautiful Winter is so beautiful around here. I’m so glad to see so many people using the Erie Canal towpath and the county park trails in all seasons (we’re from upstate NY after all; if we shelter inside whenever it’s under 40º, we’d miss so much of winter).

Use your phone To the people who complained about a restaurant being closed despite checking their website for the hours of operation, do not blame the restaurant. I’m sure the restaurant had a phone number. Did you think to call the restaurant? Folks, have you noticed people developing a communication phobia to the point of paralysis? With all the technology today there is less communication going on than there was 100 years ago. This couple probably pays over $100 a month to have their cellphone, yet they don’t use it for what it was originally designed to do.

Call Ron Colon of All Property Maintenance • (585) 802-6934 Why mulch? Mulching can benefit plants around a property in various ways. Many people lay mulch because the mulch helps soil retain moisture in the summer, when temperatures tend to be at their hottest. This can help plants survive summer heat waves. Mulch also can be used to suppress weeds. Weeds, which steal moisture plants need to build strong roots and survive summer, need light to grow. When laid correctly, mulch deprives weeds of the light they need to grow. Organic mulches can even provide homes for crickets and a type of beetle that feed on weed seeds. Mulch also can deter harmful pests depending on the type of mulch homeowners choose. When purchasing mulch, homeowners will have to choose between the aforementioned organic mulch or man-made mulches, which may be made of plastic or rubber. While man-made mulches may repel pests, they also can have adverse effects. Plastic, for example, can heat up in the summer and cause plants to burn. Certain organic mulches can repel insects that can threaten plants. That’s because the majority of organic mulches increase the amount of beneficial bacteria in the soil, and they also increase the presence of helpful insects that do not pose a threat to plant life. Those helpful insects help keep harmful insects at bay. Compost is a type of organic mulch that may attract harmful insects. While that does not mean homeowners should shy away from using compost as mulch, they should know that they may need to employ organic insecticides to combat their unwanted guests.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

FRIDGIDAIRE Can also order parts and repair appliances for all major brands.

Dave Polmanteer Appliance Repair Call 585-721-5976 (Dave) HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Smart Storage Items that are used frequently should be kept together and conveniently at hand. Use hooks, magnets and utensil holders to keep favorite knives, pot lids, spatulas and the like within easy reach. A lazy Susan can help spices stay properly sorted. Bright Ideas For Lighting Choose lighting that maximizes cooking efficiency and comfort. Task lighting should include overhead stove lights and under-cabinet fixtures so cooking and food prep area are properly lit. For dining, overhead chandeliers may be best. Everything — Especially The Kitchen Sink While shiny appliances, countertops and beautiful backsplashes may get all the attention, the sink and its surrounding area are the most used in the kitchen and deserve special consideration. Position the sink with as much prep space around it as possible. For the sink itself, look for efficiency and functionality. For example, the new BLANCO IKON Apron 33” 1 3/4 sink is designed with a convenient low divide that makes it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets. Another advantage of its apron front design is that it’s installed further forward with no countertop. This means less strain on cooks and dishwashers because they don’t have to lean over as much. What’s more, it’s made with nonporous, easy-to-clean Silgranit composite patented material and comes in eight trending colors. Optional accessories help enhance the workflow and include a floating grid that provides an extra level within the sink, to further ease the strain of handling heavy pots. A floating cutting board fits right on top of the sink to instantly create more workspace. Faucets To Favor Faucets designed with a higher arc and a pulldown spray head make rinsing dishes, filling pots and cleaning the sink faster and simpler. The new BLANCO RIVANA collection includes semi-pro, high arc with pulldown and bar faucet options. A coordinating soap dispenser is also available. The convenient Solenta Senso works hands-free. “Handy” when your hands are full—or very dirty. Learn More: For further facts and tips on kitchen design, visit blancoamerica.com.

Karen Reichert: Dedicated Steward of Scandinavian Tradition in Rochester B Y J O D Y LY N N G R E E R

Karen (in red) with President Arnie Larsen, Zone 4 Director Kaare Hansen, Vice President Bill Gibbs, and Secretary Joan Callahan

T

he Rochester chapter of the Scandinavian Heritage Society (Sons of Norway), Lodge 3-433, holds a rich history within the United States and Canada. Embracing individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and origins, the society proudly represents every Scandinavian country. Welcoming those who share a deep appreciation for Scandinavian traditions, food, and culture, the society fosters a sense of unity among its diverse members. Among the passionate individuals contributing to the society is Karen Reichert, whose connection to Scandinavian heritage runs deep. Born to a Swedish mother and Norwegian father, Reichert has been actively involved with the Sons of Norway since 2004, though her early exposure dates back to 1949 when she came to the States as an infant with her parents and then-ten-year-old brother, John (Landro). The family met some Norwegians and started going to the group in 1950, she says. Since then, The Reichert family’s involvement in the Sons of Norway spans generations, with each member leaving a lasting impact on the organization. Despite growing up in American culture, Reichert ensured her children and grandchildren remained connected to their Nordic ancestry. Reichert’s children, Emma Pasterick of NJ, Brian Reichert of Dansville, NY and Amanda Hook of Georgia participated in Sankta Lucia events in their youth. Additionally, Amanda contributes routinely to Trollnytt. The Reichert grandchildren have all participated in annual Sankta Lucia events and are interested in learning to speak Norwegian. Reichert emphasizes the enduring presence of Scandinavian culture in her family’s homes, stating, “It’s in their DNA. They love their culture,” highlighting the legacy that was not left behind when the family migrated to America. For those not familiar with the Christian Sankta (Saint in Swedish) Lucia holiday tradition, Reichert explains, “When it first started, there was a famine in Sweden and [St Lucia] came as a vision over a frozen lake with a tray of buns and coffee with a crown of light.” While Sankta Lucia is traditionally celebrated as a Swedish tradition, its origins can be traced back to Italy before that. Reichert explains, “[Lucia] was a saint in Italy, then she was martyred, and she would bring hope to the people of Italy; for some reason her soul and her spirit came to Sweden.” Every year, the Scandinavian Heritage Society offers their take on the classic holiday tradition with their famous Lutefisk dinner. Lutefisk is a dried cod or whitefish beloved by many Scandinavians. 26 years ago, the Sons of Norway conceptualized the annual Lutefisk dinner featuring the beloved fish, Swedish meatballs, and delectable desserts.

At this year’s Lutefisk dinner in Rochester, Reichert was honored for her selfless dedication to the society. Volunteers like Reichert, who generously contribute their time and energy, play a crucial role in preserving cultural traditions for future generations. As treasurer, newsletter editor, and event organizer, Reichert plays a key role with Lodge 3-433. She manages the monthly Trollnytt newsletter that keeps members informed on upcoming events, historical facts, and trivia. In addition, nearly every member of Karen’s family has participated with the Sons of Norway, from previous St. Lucia and Lutefisk dinner events to the present day Trolnytt newsletter. Reichert acknowledges the improved status of Scandinavian countries globally and advocates for extending support beyond their borders. The Sons of Norway’s original concept, aiding new immigrants from Norway, has evolved to support other cultures. In 2022, for example, the society raised $1,200 at the Lutefisk dinner for Ukraine efforts. Helping those in need and specifically immigrants and refugees is a shared message amongst both Norse and American cultures, Reichert explains. Her own parents sought better opportunities and a fresh start in the United States, leaving behind memories of WWII Nazi occupation. Reichert embodies the goals Scandinavian Heritage Society and the shared American dream of many immigrants who want to escape wartorn countries, violent conflict, pursue educational opportunities, or simply follow the possibility of a better life. The Sons of Norway promotes philanthropy and support for global causes in addition to promotion of Scandinavian interests. For more information on the Rochester chapter of the Scandinavian Heritage Society (Sons of Norway), find them on Facebook for meeting and event details.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available. 25th Annual

Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways. A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people. Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette. Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch. Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money. Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time. Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

Engagement: A job seniors find engaging also is more likely to provide the types of benefits seniors are looking for in post-retirement work. For example, researchers at Boston College’s Sloan Center on Aging and Work found that seniors who find a job or volunteering opportunity truly engaging are more likely to benefit psychologically from those experiences than those whose post-retirement work is not engaging. If seniors find themselves simply going through the motions with their post-retirement work, they can look for opportunities that they can be more enthusiastic about.
