TASTE AND SEE - Psalm 34:8 says, “O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.” 2 of our 5 senses are highlighted. The buds on our tongue give perception to our brain. It’s a wonderful feeling to enjoy good food. Without our buds things would be tasteless. Another is eyesight. Visual perception is needed to process info when exposed to the light. King David tells you that we should taste and see about the Lord Jesus. That’s the important thing in your life. We remain in blind and tasteless life without your Creator in it. Your life will change when you put your full trust alone in Jesus to allow you into Heaven. Those who don’t will have a big, horrible shock when they die. Trust Jesus today and get the Blessing now. Your soul depends upon it.

Incessant Dog Barking Our neighbor’s three dogs bark incessantly every time they are outside. The dogs are outside many times during the day, sometimes before 6:30am and even as late as 9:30pm or 10:00pm. We have complained to the neighbors more than once, but they claim they cannot hear the dogs barking. They say they have tried to curb the barking, but don’t want to curb the barking completely because then the dogs would not warn them if there was danger. Other neighbors have also complained and some have mentioned that they may move. We work from home much of the time and it is really hard to concentrate when the dogs are barking incessantly. It is impossible to have a quiet afternoon on our deck or walk our dog in the back yard. We have considered putting up a fence, but that would be quite expensive and likely would not stop the barking. Short of filing a formal complaint with law enforcement, what are we to do? Parking lot repairs Someone needs to do something but who is left to go to when management won’t fix things? A relative who has lived in a elderly apartment complex for years now with huge potholes, one way in and out, and 3/4 of it is horrendous. The sidewalks have been roped off for over a year, leaving occupants with wheelchairs or mobility carts in a dangerous position, unable to navigate it. Nothing has been fixed, other than stones tossed into the holes, which helped for just a few months. I encouraged them to call the housing authority or withhold rent until repairs are made; it is NOT safe. I can only imagine the damage being done to their vehicles. Anyone have other advice? Our seniors deserve better!
Awesome Coworkers I just want to publicly acknowledge what a blessing it is to have colleagues with whom we like to spend our days. Goodness knows, we spend a lot of time at work, so thank goodness for people who help us smile and see the good in life. Loving our new sidewalks Thank you to all the Avon Village employees who worked hard to install the new sidewalks that extend to the end of North Avenue. Each and every day I see folks utilizing them for walking their pets, strolling their children, or getting in a good walk or run. Just a small thing that has improved the quality of living in this great small town.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Are dogs really happy in freezng weather? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: While walking along the local riverway this frosty weekend, I noticed at least three people whose dogs were under-equipped for the cold. One dog wore an insulated vest but no booties; the other two dogs wore no cold protection at all. Why do so many owners ignore their dogs’ comfort and safety this way? -- Harold in New Hampshire DEAR HAROLD: Unfortunately, not every dog owner knows that it’s up to them to protect their pets from cold-weather hazards. Most dogs won’t ask for a sweater vest, and I’ve yet to meet one that didn’t hate booties. I know quite a few dogs that just won’t tolerate booties.
Penny Saver
Many owners do know their dogs’ limits in the cold, however. They check the temperature before going outside and survey the sidewalk or trail they’re on for hazards like ice chunks, salt or glazing. They limit the time spent outdoors so their dog’s core temperature doesn’t drop. They monitor their dogs to make sure they’re not shivering or in pain, and that their paws aren’t getting frostbitten. And they carefully wipe and check their dogs’ paws as soon as they get back indoors. How do you, an observer, make sure that an owner is following these guidelines? Confronting owners is not advisable. You may be able to strike up a casual conversation on the path, and ask how their dog tolerates the cold weather. But don’t preach at them. In my experience, owners who take the time to walk their dogs on a leash in freezing weather do care about their health and keep an eye on them in the cold.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEING IN NATURE Nature and vitamin D - The potential health benefits of vitamin D are increasingly drawing the attention of medical researchers, and for good reason. According to the Harvard Medical School, recent research has suggested that vitamin D may offer added protection against conditions such as osteoporosis, cancer, heart attack, stroke, and depression. Exposure to sunshine can help the body generate vitamin D, thus providing further reason to spend time in nature.

to infectious mononucleosis (“mono”) at college, and she is coming to spend a week at home. What precautions do we need to take to make sure that the rest of the family remains safe? How long does the virus stay active on surfaces? Also, can she get her flu and COVID shots? -- D.G. ANSWER: Mono is classically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but very similar symptoms can be caused by other agents, viruses and even a parasite as well. The virus is transmitted through saliva. The latency period (the time from exposure until the time of symptoms) is longer than you might expect; four to six weeks is typical. Not everybody develops symptoms. Younger children seldom develop symptoms at all when infected, yet they still receive immunity. Unfortunately, they may shed infectious virus particles for months, years or even decades. It is likely that the adults in your family are immune, since 90% of adults have had an EBV infection before. EBV is not a particularly infectious disease, so transmission to family members is uncommon. Still, you should avoid sharing anything that saliva touches, like food, cups or toothbrushes. You don’t need to take special precautions with surfaces. She can get the flu and COVID vaccines as long as she feels well and doesn’t have a fever.

Margot Fass Inspires Environmental Conservation, One Frog at a Time BY SUZIE WELLS
I
f you walk the towpath of the Erie Canal just east of Schoen Place, chances are you’ve seen signs on the embankment in front of an adorable building labeled A Frog House. Now officially certified Pollinator Friendly through the Cornell Cooperative Extension, this garden has special significance. Its owner, Margot Fass, passionate frog enthusiast, transformed a boathouse/shed in disrepair into a magical haven dedicated to frog conservation. The journey began with Fass’s love for whimsical frog creations and evolved when she learned about the Golden Panama Frog’s extinction. Inspired, Fass decided to take action to help protect frog and wetland habitat conservation. An activist, artist, author, educator, presenter, and psychiatrist, Fass makes A Frog House a center for local advocacy, worldwide collaboration, and ecological education. A Frog House features Margot’s personal collection of knitted, concrete, wool, and fuzzy frogs. It also serves as a hub for frog conservation initiatives. Margot says she seeks to learn as much as she can about frogs and their human-made challenges. She and her center actively engage in wetland restoration, habitat creation, and raise awareness about declining frog populations (1/3 of all frog species worldwide currently face decline). Margot explains that frogs are incredible creatures, surviving natural disasters of all kinds, but unfortunately humans and our daily choices are killing the amphibians. She emphasizes the importance of frogs as bioindicators and vital components of the food chain. No frogs or far fewer frogs mean a decline in the ecosystem from the ground up. Margot’s advocacy has had a profound impact locally, helping protect nearby wetlands through collaboration with legislature and grant opportunities, and by sharing word with groups young and old, small and large. Her reach extends globally as she collaborates with organizations and individuals to address amphibian conservation challenges. The mission of A Frog House is to advocate, collaborate, and educate on behalf of frogs and their habitats. Margot envisions an environment healthy for all life, emphasizing kindness and compassion, chemical-free properties, clean wetlands, and nitrogen-restorative native plants. Margot says nearly all climate change/ conservation recommendations benefit frogs. For example, her biggest suggestion is for homeowners to reconsider pesticides. Instead of spreading chemicals on your lawn, consider planting native plants to help wildlife in general, and install a pond to encourage frogs and toads, who are the most natural insect control. And be mindful when driving at night, especially on the first warm, rainy days of spring with mass frog migrations from winter retreats to the ponds and pools where they breed. A Frog House hosts workshops of all kinds for a wide array of schools and groups. Annual events remind conservationists that saving our planet comes with small changes. At this past year’s Save the Frogs Day, herpetologist and FLCC biology teacher, John
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Bateman, spoke about frogs and then sent participants off around the property’s diverse habitats to find and identify frogs, native trees and shrubs, and discuss conservation opportunities. Margot’s daughter, Lindsay Graham, lent her musical talents to perform at the organization’s annual gala that doubled as a celebration of life for Margot’s late husband, Martin. Margot says she loves that A Frog House events welcome guest speakers from Haiti, Brazil, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, etc. She loves bringing urban children to observe and learn about the creatures and habitats they wouldn’t otherwise experience. “All humans should care about frogs,” she says. “Frog conservation affects all of us. It’s not just about small amphibians we may otherwise pay little mind to on a walk or drive around town. Their health reflects the ecosystem’s health, and we should all do our part to help preserve our world.” Margot’s infectious enthusiasm and dedication have turned A Frog House into a regional hub for environmental stewardship. Acknowledging the challenges in frog conservation, she reflects on the interconnectedness of species conservation and human conflicts. She envisions a model community committed to chemical-free properties, clean wetlands, and a thriving environment, promoting mental and physical health in the community. A Frog House stands as a testament to the power of passion and dedication in environmental conservation. Through art, advocacy, and education, Margot inspires individuals to embrace a harmonious relationship with nature, one frog at a time. Everyone can help save frogs. Here are suggestions to implement today: • Eat organic food, mostly vegetables and plants • If you eat meat, please avoid frog legs • Responsibly dispose of unused medications • Avoid personal care products containing plastic microbeads • Avoid unnatural pesticides and fertilizers • Reduce your lawn area • Create a frog pond • Create a rain garden or other garden of native plants • Avoid non-native plants and animals (including fish) • Pick up pet waste • Leave your leaves on the ground, and native aquatic vegetation and dead wood near your pond • Create a compost heap • Protect amphibians from pets Love to write?
