Poorly maintained vehicles endure undue stress that can be prevented by adhering to routine maintenance schedules. Peruse your vehicle’s owner’s manuals to determine the recommended intervals to change the oil and replace the air filter and spark plugs. These simple maintenance tasks are easy and inexpensive, but they make it easier for engines to run smoothly and make efficient use of fuel.

PAW’S CORNER

When Dog Walking is a Tug of War

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog Trey is a 3-year-old mixed breed, mostly Lab, who pulls at his leash every time we go out for a walk. I don’t want to use a choke collar, because it seems painful and counterproductive to punish him every time he tries to pull ahead. How can I get Trey to walk next to me and not tug all the time? --

Bill in New Orleans

DEAR BILL: Dogs love being outside and exploring. at’s a big reason why Trey is tugging at his leash -- he wants to run and explore everything in the world. But that’s not possible in the city. And for the sake of your leash-holding arm, getting Trey to relax is a big deal.

You’re probably saying, “Oh, this is where Sam tells us to reinforce basic obedience training.” And you’re right. It’s important for Trey to follow your commands, especially if he pulls the leash out of your hand. But that’s just one element to leash training a dog.

When you pull on the leash to slow Trey down, he will automatically pull in the opposite direction. is is a reflex action.

e more you pull, the more they dig in.

So instead, try a misdirection-reward strategy. Give the command “heel” and have Trey walk calmly beside you, with the leash slack. Whenever he gets ahead of you (before the tug of war starts), stop and change direction. He’ll turn to go in the direction you’re heading, and when he does, give him lots of praise and maybe (at first) a little treat. Do this every time he tries to move ahead of you.

If Trey tends to pull really hard, change from a collar and leash to a chest harness. is prevents injury and can make it easier to control him.

COVID Vaccines Do Not Increase the Risk of Cancer

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am looking for your opinion regarding the new COVID booster. I am not opposed to vaccinations, as I have had the initial two shots and one booster. About 18 months ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and have since had my prostate removed. My current PSA readings are undetectable, for which I’m grateful. I was also diagnosed with melanoma 12 months ago (along with multiple basil spots). Biopsy results showed that all were successfully removed and were within positive margins, for which I’m also grateful.

I want to get the new COVID booster for obvious reasons, but I’m reading that the boosters are creating cancer recurrence (including prostate cancer and melanoma) in some patients. Clearly, I don’t want either to return, but I also don’t want to get COVID. Can you help with my dilemma and offer a recommendation? -- T.I.

United States,

over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

ANSWER: I have also heard people making that claim, but it isn’t supported by evidence. Both the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society agree that there is no evidence, nor a scientific reason, suggesting that COVID-19 vaccinations increase the risk of cancer growth, whether it was the first one or an additional one. (By the way, if you saw, like I did, the term “turbo cancer,” you can safely disregard the claim, since this isn’t a real entity. That’s fearmongering.)

The COVID vaccine, whether it’s an mRNA or a traditional vaccine (like the Novavax), is a very limited exposure of a critical protein in our immune system to help “teach” the immune system how to recognize a COVID infection. The vaccine provides pretty good protection against infections for a few months and excellent protection against severe infections (including hospitalization and death) for close to a year. Yearly vaccination seems like it might be reasonable, although public health experts have not decided on a longterm COVID vaccination plan.

People with cancer are particularly recommended to get vaccinated, since both cancer and its treatments may affect the immune system and make infections more serious. However, chemotherapy may affect the body’s ability to successfully react to the vaccine, so your oncologist can help you decide the optimal time to get the vaccine if you are undergoing chemo.

Here’s a Tip

* When putting in new plants, you can tear strips of tin foil, then use toothpicks or small stakes to pin them to the ground in your new garden. It will keep the cats out, and can even discourage birds.

* “My kids are long past wagon size, but their wagon isn’t done hauling yet. I put it to good use in the garden. I can park it in the shed stocked with all the things I might need. It’s very handy.” -- A.A. in Florida

* To sharpen a pair of worn scissors, try cutting through a piece of aluminum foil that is doubled or tripled over. Be sure to clean and dry scissors you use in the kitchen.

Frederick Douglass, Iconic Rochesterian Remains as Relevant as Ever

According to History, Black History Month originated with Negro History week in 1926, corresponding with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. By the late 1960s, with the civil rights movement and growing awareness of Black identity, the week evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses around the US.

President Ford officially recognized the month in 1976 to “honor the too-o en neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Today, we honor the contributions and legacy of activists and civil rights pioneers, as well as leaders in industry, politics, science, culture, and more.

Looking around Rochester and Western New York, one historical figure stands taller than most, and we are proud to have had Frederick Douglass in our fair city for 25 years during the height of his activism.

ere’s a reason his name pairs with Susan B. Anthony’s on the iconic 490 bridge.

According to the City of Rochester, the first eight-foot bronze monument of Douglass (created by Stanley W. Edwards) was installed in Highland Park in 1899 and became the first civic monument in the US to honor an African American man. To celebrate the 2018 bicentennial of Douglass’ birth, a collaborative initiative, the “Year of Douglass,” celebrated Douglass’ achievements and legacy.

Rochester artist, Olivia Kim, created thirteen life-size monuments of Douglass that were placed at historically significant locations around Rochester, paying homage to Douglass’ impact on the community. is public art exhibition and history project aimed to “recognize and reflect on the living legacy of the selffreed man whose 25 years [1847-1872] in Rochester resulted in some of his most important life’s work.”

According to the initiative, the installation at the Rochester airport, now aptly named for Douglass, is particularly significant,asthe1899monumentwasoriginallyinstalledatRochester’s main train station to convey the message to all who arrived that we in this city salute Douglass and his keystone principles of honesty, justice, freedom, education, and equity. Today, all visitors to Rochester see these values front and center.

Smithsonian’s Janelle Dixon says we need to understand Frederick Douglass now more than ever, as a new generation of “Americans who never really thought about race or slavery recognize for the first time that they’re foundational to the United States and the American experience.” Particularly in the wake of racial turmoil making the news across the country to this day, Douglass’ legacy and historical significance cannot be overstated.

A former slave turned abolitionist, orator, and writer/publisher, Douglass constantly evolved as a thinker, writer, and orator, Dixon says. In Rochester, he helped with Underground Railroad activities,

including housing runaway slaves in his own home. He published the abolition newsletter, e North Star, and Frederick Douglass’ Paper. He also published his famous autobiographies, telling his own story and proving his mettle as a writer and thinker.

He supported women’s suffrage as the abolition and suffrage movements ran tandem across the state and nation at the time. According to History, he was notably the only African American to attend the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, at which he declared, “In this denial of the right to participate in government, not merely the degradation of woman and the perpetuation of a great injustice happens, but the maiming and repudiation of one-half of the moral and intellectual power of the government of the world.” Not one to mince words, he was notably vocal and passionate about matters of justice and equality for any American.

Douglass’ life’s work serves as an inspiration to those who seek equality and a more just society. He was one of the nation’s most powerful voices against slavery, and as Yohuru Williams argues for History, Douglass “never shied away from hard truths,” keeping Americans “focused on the horrors he and millions of others endured as enslaved Americans: the relentless indignities, the physical violence, the families ripped apart. And he blasted the hypocrisy of a slave-holding nation touting liberty and justice for all.”

To Douglass, a staunch abolitionist, “Slavery [is] the enemy of both the slave and the slaveholder,” but in his West India Emancipation speech, given in our neighboring Canandaigua in August 1857, Douglassrecognizedthatwithoutstruggle, therewouldnotbeprogress, arguably because those in power will not concede without demand.

For the 24th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, in 1886, Douglass delivered a rousing address in Washington, D.C., during which he said, “where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.”

May we all recognize the legacy of Frederick Douglass and continue to stand up for the honesty, justice, freedom, education, and equity he devoted his life to the pursuit of.

HOLIDAY BAKING POINTERS

Pans should be on the center rack of the oven. If the oven isn’t wide enough to put multiple pans side by side, place them on different racks and slightly offset them to enable air circulation.

Use parchment paper. This unsung hero of baking can keep cookies from spreading out on baking sheets, prevent cakes from sticking to pans and may even help batter and dough bake evenly.

Cool cakes upside down on a cooling rack. This will help flatten out the tops, which makes it easier to stack and level cakes for layered cakes.

Town Workers

Wing Woes in Western NY

Thank you to all the workers who put in the time and effort to keep our roads clean and safe when it’s snowing. Although we haven’t had much snow (yet) this year comparatively, the dedication is there and appreciated!

I left the PNW for [local region], lured by tales of legendary [chicken] wings. What a letdown! Here, in [location], I’ve faced nothing but one culinary catastrophe after another. [Other state]’s wings were a crispy, saucy revelation, but here, they’re as lackluster as a foggy day in Seattle. I’ve searched high and low in [local town], expecting each wing joint to redeem this city’s saucy honor. Instead, I’ve been met with wings that are to authentic [chicken] wings what instant coffee is to espresso— merely a shadow. They lack the crunch, the kick, the soul. The question nags at me: How can the home of the [chicken] wing serve up such pale imitations? I’m on a quest for that perfect bite, the one that transports me to wing nirvana, but alas, I find myself lost in a wilderness of wing disappointment. My plea is simple: Give me the fiery, the tangy, the transcendent wings I know exist somewhere in your midst.

COLD WEATHER WILDLIFE IN HOMES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE RISKS

Many people may practice the “love thy neighbor” creed, but when it comes to four-legged wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes when outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thinned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has found that many areas of the country continue to report increased encounters with nuisance wildlife.

“While it can be a unique experience to spot wildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be discouraged from taking up residence,” advises Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed to rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected with rabies. Because of the risks associated with these pests, homeowners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ANSWER THE CALL

(NAPSI)—When an emergency strikes, firefighters are there to answer the call.In fact, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that fire departments responded to over 35 million calls in 2016.What people may not realize is that the majority of these firefighters are volunteers, donating their time and energy to be there for those in need.

“It really is neighbors helping neighbors,” said Steve Hirsch, volunteer firefighter and chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “There is nothing more rewarding than being a volunteer firefighter—we are there for our neighbors when they are having their worst possible day.”

The need for volunteer firefighters is stronger than ever. While the number of calls has tripled in the last 30 years, the number of volunteer firefighters has decreased. This trend has become especially noticeable in the last few years. According to NFPA data, there were 682,600 volunteer firefighters in 2017,down from 814,850 in 2015.

Despite the decline, volunteers play a critical role in the nation’s emergency services, particularly in small and rural communities. Of the nearly 30,000 fire departments in the U.S., 83 percent are either entirely or mostly volunteer. These volunteers respond to nearly every type of emergency—structure fires, wildfires, medical emergencies, natural disasters, vehicle crashes, hazardous materials spills, search and rescue, active shooter threats, and more.

“We need more people to step up and serve so that we can continue to provide critical life saving services in our local communities,” said Hirsch. “The biggest requirement is the desire to help others. The rest can be taught.”

For those who want to help but aren’t able to commit to becoming a firefighter or EMS provider, volunteers are also needed to fill non-operational roles. Community members can join a department’s auxiliary program to provide needed support services such as fire prevention education, disaster planning, fundraising, administration, and much more.

Volunteering with a local fire department takes commitment and dedication, but the benefits are many. Making a difference, saving lives, developing new skills, and being part of a close knit team are all reasons people choose to volunteer.

“I’m a lawyer by trade, but I don’t think about that every day. I think every day about being a volunteer firefighter. It truly is the most impactful way I can serve my community,” said Hirsch.

HOLIDAY BAKING POINTERS

Baking is a science and the ingredients are used in a ratio to produce a desired chemical reaction while cooking. Do not substitute ingredients, and measure each addition carefully.

Scooping packs flour down — potentially causing you to use more than the recipe calls for. Instead, spoon the flour into your measuring cup gently and use a straight edge to level it out. Even better, use a scale and metric measurements to ensure exact amounts of wet and dry ingredients.

Certainingredients, likebutterandeggs, are temperature-dependent.Cold butter in biscuits helps them to rise up flaky and delicious. Eggs brought to room temperature enable the emulsification process to work more readily. The difference in temperature can mean a completely different chemical reaction, so follow the recipe accordingly. Purchase an oven thermometer, set your oven to 350 F, the standard baking temperature, and see what the thermometer reads. If it is different, adjust cooking times accordingly or have the oven repaired.

Use unsalted butter. Most recipes will call for unsalted butter so you aren’t adding unwanted sodium to the recipe, affecting dough consistency and flavor.
