Thompson Health recognizes the lifelong commitment of our medical professionals each year on March 30th — National Doctors’ Day. This is a day set aside to honor those who have sworn an oath to uphold the utmost ideals of their profession. Our prescription this Doctors’ Day is a healthy dose of appreciation for these exceptional individuals, our medical professionals, who have inspired us with their compassion, dedication, and perseverance.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET CURTAINS: Curtains also may have absorbed substantial amounts of dust, dirt and debris over the winter. This might be more visible near the end of winter when more sunlight begins to shine through. Clean the curtains in adherence to the manufacturer instructions before you open windows for the season so any wind that blows in does not spread debris onto nearby furniture. Once the curtains have been washed, opening windows may help them dry more quickly.

To show special recognition to a doctor who has made a difference in your life and to read the history of Doctors’ Day, visit ThompsonHealth.com/DoctorsDay

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapescansavehomeowners enough energy to make the projectspayforthemselvesinless than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. TheDOEalsoadvisesthatshading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapescanreducepreviously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which meanstheywillblocksolarheatin the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertimebutdropconsiderably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist.

USE SUNSCREEN. You only have to suffer from sun poisoning one time to understand the relationship between sun and water. While the water may be cold and temperatures out-side chilly, sun reflecting off the water will still give you a burn. A sweat proof sunscreen that won’t run and sting the eyes is ideal, as is one that won’t leave a greasy residue that could adversely affect your grip.

THE IMPACT

REVIEWS HAVE ON BUSINESSES.

Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review.

Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to o er positive feedback.

Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services.

Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect.

Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an e ort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased.

Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* The way some items are packaged these days, you need to be Houdini to get into them. When you’re dealing with blister packs -- items sealed inside a hard plastic wrapper that looks to be heat crimped on the outsides -- try your can opener. You can run it around the edge of stubborn plastic packages, enough to get the item out. It’s more secure than a carpet knife or razor.

* Want to be able to tell at a glance which key belongs to the front door, the shed, your grandma’s house, etc.? Raid your (or your wife’s or daughter’s) stash of nail polish to paint the tops of keys to color code them.

* “Styrofoam trays that come with meat or in the produce area are very handy helpers for lots of little jobs. If yours are clean and unmarred, wash with hot, soapy water, rinse and dry for later. They are perfect for sending a friend home with leftovers, as you can cover the meal with plastic wrap. There is then no need to return a plate.” -- D. in Indiana

* For a deck of playing cards that has gotten sticky, put it in a bag (paper or plastic) and add a bit of baby powder. Shake vigorously. Take the cards out and shuffle to get off the extra powder. They are likely good as new.

* “Tidy loosely folded electric cords by storing them in cardboard tubes. The tubes can be cut to fit from a paper towel roll, or you can use a smaller, toilet-paper roll. Even long cords can be stored together in a giftwrap core. Do not overfill a tube, nor wind any electrical cord too tightly.” -- O.R. in Nevada

* If you have a juice spill on clothing, try club soda to remove it when the stain is fresh.

I would I had some flowers o’ the spring that might Become your time of day... daffodils, That come before the swallow dares, and take

The winds of March with beauty; violets dim, ButsweeterthanthelidsofJuno’s eyes...

O, these I lack,

MARCH 2023

This celebration is a great opportunity to learn more about mother nature.

In ancient times, kingdoms in Babylon, Egypt, and Persia spent a huge amount of their cities’ wealth on constructing elaborate gardens. What’s more, they pioneered the technology of irrigation systems, which became a vital part of modern-day gardening.

Gardening, Nature, and Ecology Books Month Fun Facts

The best way to celebrate Gardening, Nature and Ecology Books Month is to plant a seed. There’s nothing better than witnessing a flower grow after weeks of watering and nourishing!

What flower is the easiest to grow? Sunflowers and zinnias are the easiest flowers to plant, manage, and grow. They require little care and attention.

Baking soda sweetens your crops. Regularly sprinkle a dash of baking soda on your plant’s soil to sweeten your tomatoes.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Men With Factor

V Leiden Can Still Receive Testosterone Therapy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Factor V Leiden, but I have been wanting to do testosterone replacement therapy. I have heard that testosterone causes blood clots. Obviously, with FVL, that would be a huge deal for me. Is this true? Does it cause clots, or is it safe for me to do? -- R.C.

ANSWER: Factor V Leiden is a common genetic variant that increases a person’s risk for developing a blood clot. However, a person who has never had a blood clot, but who is identified as heterozygous (meaning they only have one copy of the gene) for factor V Leiden, is still not likely to have a blood clot during their lifetime and is not recommended for treatment to prevent a blood clot.

Testosterone replacement therapy in men with FVL does increase the risk of blood clots in some studies, but not in others. In the studies that have shown an increase in risk, the risk has been estimated as approximately one person per thousand treated with testosterone each year. However, the risk occurs mostly during the first three months, and after two years on treatment, there is no additional risk. Thus, roughly one man per 500 who has FVL and gets treated with testosterone will get a clot, according to the studies that show an increase in risk. This is a small risk, but a blood clot is a significant potential problem. So, the risk of getting a clot should certainly go into the discussion about whether to give testosterone replacement to a man with FVL and symptomatic low testosterone levels. Most of the men I have seen with this issue have elected to take the replacement.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Look for EV-friendly lodging. Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

A Long Overdue Thank You

I want to sincerely thank all of the people who stopped to help after my accident on February 13th on I-390 (Groveland Road). A huge thank you to Trooper Anderson for your kindness, professionalism, and helpfulness. You are all angels!

Farmington Fire Dept. and Water Dept. Many Thanks!

I want to RAVE about my town’s Volunteers - Chief Phil Robinson, Dawn Malcomb & Matt Hauf and crew with the Fire Dept. Also, Josh Fagner and crew at the Water Dept. Thank you all for coming to our rescue on a Saturday morning with our basement water problem! You all saved our basement from extensive damage! Your kindness, extra help and care are appreciated. We are so grateful to you all!

An ER MD at Rochester General Hospital was a Gem

In mid-October 2022 I went to the Rochester General Hospital emergency room (ER) and got there about 6:15PM. I went there because at about 5:15PM I took my blood pressure with my home device. It registered 202/102 which, for an 81 year old man, was very high. After waiting about an hour a nurse called me to the ER examine room and found my blood pressure lower at 155/95. A doctor then came in and after many medical questions stated I could leave and see my own MD the next day. I advised him that I had a problem. My wife was in the main waiting area in the front of the hospital being brought there in a wheelchair cause she could not stay in the darkish ER corridor with me. Also my car was in the ER parking lot. Dr. Singh became a gem and a savior. He got a wheelchair and pushed me to where my wife was. Then he got my 80 year-old wife in the wheelchair and pushed her for 10 minutes with me behind out of the waiting room through the ER to the ER exit. What Dr S. did was above and beyond

If you can walk to get a shopping cart or handicap cart, why can’t you return it to the store or cart corral? The answer is just plain laziness! Instead, some leave them between parked cars or in front of their own car and then look around to see if anyone is watching before quickly scurrying away. Even with children, you still have to get one when you arrive. How would you like it if the wind blew one into your car and dented it? Bet you wouldn’t.

No delivery is that important

I was heading to [local town] about 6pm Friday and got almost to [local road] and someone with a red delivery sign on top came down [local road] doing about 60-70 mph and blew the stop sign straight across to [local road]. He had to be doing 70 mph down [local road]. Thank god there was not anyone coming the other way. I did not catch what delivery it was, just that it was a dark blue or black car or SUV with a red sign on top. There is no delivery that important to speed like that. Should be held accountable.

Lanes

Right lane ends, merge left doesn’t mean accelerate then cut off the car that’s already in the proper lane. Slow down. Do you feel you have to be in front? You don’t have the right away!

PAW’S CORNER

How to Stop Dogs From Roughhousing

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My girlfriend and I moved in together recently, and we each brought a dog with us. I’ve got a German Shepherd named Mac, and her Golden Retriever is Diz. Both are about 2 years old, and they get along ne. However, in the evenings they roughhouse in the living room. We want them to just settle down so we can watch TV. Is this possible? --

Laura N., Augusta, Georgia

DEAR LAURA: It’s very possible, even with younger dogs. And the sooner you establish behavior norms around a schedule, the better.

Diz’s playful personality probably balances out Mac’s serious working dog persona, so take advantage of this.

Wear them out: Both of these breeds are energetic. It’ll be much easier to keep them calm if you take them out for a walk or a romp at a dog park for about an hour before dinner and TV time.

Set the behavior: When it’s TV time, bring them into the room and give the “sit” or “lie down” and “stay” commands to each dog. Give them a treat only when they obey the commands.

Correct and redirect: When the dogs begin to wrestle or steal each other’s toys, tell them to stop. Call both dogs over and work on the basic commands again, then have them sit or lie down in the original spots.

Separate them: If they begin roughhousing again and no longer respond to commands, take Diz into one room and Mac into another.

is will take time and repetition.

e goal is to get them to follow your commands for longer and longer periods until you no longer have to separate them. Be prepared to pause the TV and focus on their training for days or weeks. e long-term reward is worth it.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Some of the messages say the account has already been canceled but I can get it back by -- you guessed it -- giving them my credit card number within an hour.

I don’t think so.

I’m on a phone list for Net ix as well. I called Net ix and no, my account is not about to be suspended. Said the representative: “You’re on automatic pay. If somehow a payment isn’t made, it’s our fault for not processing it.” If you’re getting those “you’re late” messages on your cellphone, beware. Don’t accidentally touch the link in the message. It will take you to a website that looks real but is not, and just connecting to it can download a virus on your phone. Back out carefully and delete the text message. Take your time.

Don’t try to contact the scammers to ask to be taken o their list. It only veri es that yours is a good number and it will be sold to others.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate.

Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

Daisy Girl Scouts Serve Community Meal with Smiles!

Co-leader Katie Rine said, “A lot of troop leaders in our Service Unit are very active in our community. One in particular, Heather McAdoo, helps to organize the community dinners … three Saturdays each month. Di erent organizations act as hosts and provide dinner, dessert, and volunteers” to run the event.

Rine said, “ is was our troop’s rst time hosting and it won’t be our last! e girls (and parents) really enjoyed it!”

e dinner that day was a baked potato bar. Co-leader Christin Morse said the moms served the potatoes and topped them with the hot items (chili and broccoli) and the guests continued down the line to help themselves to other toppings (bacon, cheese, sour cream, chives). e troop also served salad and cookies to round out the meal.

e girls set tables with silverware, napkins, salt and pepper, and butter. ey brought out toppings for the baked potato bar, mixed fruit punch in pitchers, and re lled items as they emptied. roughout dinner, the girls went around to guests, asking if anyone needed anything, more to drink, another napkin, etc. When guests nished, the girls cleared the tables and brought the empty dishes to the kitchen to be washed.

is meal is o ered as eat-in or take-out, and Morse said that the meal served approximately 70 diners. Morse said, “ is was our rst time serving a community dinner and we are looking forward to our next!”

Guests said it was “so nice to be served by helpful, sweet, smiley girls.”

e girls said the best part of the event was going around to each table during dinner to ask if anyone needed anything. All agreed the “best part was serving. But really the best part was everything.”

Morse said they are a young troop, and this was their rst service project. Before that, the troop collected donations for e Spot (thespotny.org) as part of earning their Making Choices and Good Neighbor badges. e Spot provides free school supplies, clothing, food, and shoes to UPK-12 students in need within the Victor school district.

Rine said, “We collected 5 pairs of socks, 10 pairs of gloves, 11 winter hats, a bag of personal care items, and enough snacks to supply the Victor Early Childhood School’s resource room for one month.”

Karen Hansen, another mom within the unit, organizes each community dinner’s musical entertainment with various genres, instruments, ages, etc. of local talented artists. Hansen says she even takes a turn performing on the piano. She says, “ ese dinners are a big asset to our community.”

To volunteer as a host or as musical entertainment for these dinners, please call, text, or email Hansen at 585-703-7432 / Karenhansen7@hotmail.com

e Presbyterian Church has served this community dinner for 17 years. Each 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Saturday of the month from 5-6:30pm, enjoy a sit-down, family-style wholesome dinner cooked and served by volunteer hosts. All are welcome. Take-out meals are available for people who call the church at 585-924-2289 during the Community Dinner time. Dinners will be brought out to your car.

e community Toiletry Closet is open during this time as well, so families and individuals may ll their household needs as they ll their bellies in fellowship.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
