GENERAL CONTRACTING CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS Not all bees build the wax or paper structures associated with traditional beehives. Those hives may not be readily visible even for bees that do build them. Wood-nesting bees can nest in twigs or dead trees. Bees may nest underground or use the burrows abandoned by small rodents. Before excavating or disturbing more remote areas of the yard, check to see if it is a habitat for bees. Leave some natural areas of the landscape untouched and do not remove twigs, mounds of dirt and native flowers to attract more bees.

Thank you! Recently, Berkeley Brean (Channel 10 Investigative Reporter) drew attention to the lack of Monroe County medical transport for people who need to be moved by stretcher from home to medical appointments. Thanks to Berkeley’s news segment and Rochester Medical Transport’s efforts on our behalf, we were able to get my husband from our home in Henrietta to an essential appointment at the Spine Center on Ridgeway Avenue. Please know that this retired military man and his family thank you from the bottom of their hearts! - Jim R., his wife Sandy, & daughter Tonya Returned Wallet Thank you so much to the person who returned my wallet to ESL in Brockport. You have renewed my faith in humanity. Elementary School Art Show Our granddaughter invited us to attend the Avon Elementary School Art Show on Wednesday, June 15th. What a show! The students, from all grades, exhibited their fantastic works of art produced under the guidance of their art teacher, Nicole Rowley. While viewing the art, the Avon High School Senior Jazz Band, directed by Charlotte Collins, played jazz tunes for all to enjoy. What an awesome, talented group of musicians! We totally enjoyed our entire time there and would especially like to thank Mr. Rob Lupisella (retiring Elementary School Principal - we will miss him!) for making the event possible. Thank you, also, to all the school staff and students for an amazing experience.

A Response I hope I am not the only one disturbed by a rant titled “Stupid Idea.” This is an irresponsible and reckless [rant]…and is truly hate speech. Wishing ill upon others, whether or not they agree with your beliefs, is morally wrong. Additionally, the author of this rant has no idea if any of the Texas victims or their families were for or against gun control…again, totally irresponsible. As disturbing as this rant is, I find it unacceptable that it was printed at all. Free speech is one thing; hate speech is completely unacceptable. Please vet these comments more carefully. Thank you. Dear readers - we agree. This one got by us and we apologize for printing the rant as submitted. Thank you. ~ The GVPS Management Team Expiration Dates A word to my fellow shoppers and stores. Lately, it has become common that food on the shelves is not properly rotated anymore. Check the expiration dates more carefully. None of us have money to waste. Stores are having a hard time hiring and training, and unfortunately that leads to this problem that we are all too busy to notice. Face Traffic I live on [local road] in [local town]. We’re across from a school. There are kids around the corner from us who walk home with their backs to traffic. I can’t tell you how many people we see doing that along this busy road! Most are listening to their phones and cannot hear traffic behind them, are texting on their phones, or are walking two or three abreast with one of them walking on the side line with no idea what is coming up behind them. Adults should know better, but they don’t! I am begging parents to talk to their children about walking facing traffic so that they see what is coming at them. This could save their lives!

mammogram in July, but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed specifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer followup are not an adequate substitute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around. ***

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Fourth of July Fireworks Can Traumatize Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Please remind your readers that the noise and flash of fireworks can traumatize pets! Last year, my son and his partner took their dog “Bliss” to a Fourth of July festival. Someone set off a string of firecrackers a few feet from the booth they were visiting. Bliss bolted and pulled her leash out of my son’s hand. She ran straight out into the road. Luckily, the cars all stopped, and one of the drivers caught her. Afterward she remained very anxious. Bliss now takes medication to stay calm, and it’s difficult to take her to unfamiliar places. Please urge people not to set off fireworks; go to a professional display and leave the pets at home. -- Judith in Lake City, Florida
MOMENTS IN TIME * On June 29, 1995, the American space shuttle Atlantis docks with the Russian space station Mir to form the largest manmade satellite ever to orbit the Earth. It marked the 100th human space mission in American history. (The History Channel)
DEAR JUDITH: You told them, and I thank you! I’m very sorry to hear that Bliss was traumatized, and I hope your son is able, through medication and training, to improve her confidence. Bliss’ parents didn’t do anything wrong in taking her to the festival, but their experience shows how others’ irresponsibility can have consequences for pets, and that owners have to be alert and ready to handle potential problems. The Fourth of July can be a trying day for pets. Crowded parties and loud fireworks can really stress them out. Large fireworks displays are no different than big thunderstorms to most pets, and should be treated as such. If fireworks will be within earshot of your home this holiday, prepare a safe area for your pet to shelter where the noise will not bother it as badly. If a ThunderShirt works for your dog (or cat), use it. Don’t bring pets to fireworks displays, and if you’re setting off backyard fireworks, put your pets inside. Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 26, 1892, Nobel Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck is born. Her novel “The Good Earth” (1930), describing peasant life in China, became an international bestseller and was translated into 30 languages. Buck wrote 80 novels and books.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Keep your crisper drawer clean by lining with fresh newspaper. It will absorb smells and liquid, and can be easily replaced. * If it’s garage sale time, try this trick: Wrap a picture frame tightly with tulle. Then you can hang earrings from the tulle. Maybe someone will think it’s so cute that you’ll sell the frame, too! * When your cut-up fruit is about to expire and you don’t think you’ll be able to eat it in time, just freeze it for smoothies. Lay it out in a single layer and pop it in the freezer. When it’s frozen, you can put it in a zipper-top baggie for easy storage. * “Do you have a lot of coffee mugs? Maybe it’s time to show them off! My granny has so many coffee mugs from trips and that she got as gifts. My daddy put up five long shelves on one wall of her kitchen. They are the perfect place to line up and display all the mugs, and each one has a story, which is fun to hear.” -- F.E. in North Carolina * “I have three girls and one bathroom, so there’s no way anyone gets ‘ready’ in front of the bathroom mirror. Instead, all the girls have a hanging shoe rack on the back of their door for makeup and hair supplies, and a mirror on the wall.” -- P.W. in Oregon * Stubborn stains in the toilet? Try dropping in a few denture tablets before going to bed, then scrub and flush in the morning GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Here’s How I Saved on Prescription Drugs
The price of prescription drugs has, like everything else, inched up. In some cases, the cost has made a massive, sudden jump, and it comes as a shock when you check out at the pharmacy. But there are ways around this horrible surprise. I recently discovered a way to save a lot of money ($80 on a 90-day prescription) by doing two things: I changed pharmacies, and I started using GoodRx. Here’s how: Go to the GoodRx website (goodrx.com) and put in your ZIP code so that all the local pharmacies show up. Enter the name of the drug you take, as well as the dose and number of pills. See what each pharmacy charges using GoodRx. They will vary widely. Boy, did I get a shock. It took me all of two minutes to call a new pharmacy and ask them to have the prescription transferred. Then I printed out the GoodRx coupon showing the pharmacy name, the drug and dose, the price and so on. I took that to the pharmacy and voila! Eighty dollars saved. Here are a few other ideas if GoodRx isn’t going to work for you: -- Ask your doctor if a generic would be just as good, or if another drug would work just as well. -- Find out if you qualify for the Extra Help program to pay for your drugs by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or read the information at www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10508.pdf. -- See if you qualify for the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program. (www. medicare.gov/plan-compare/#/pharmaceutical-assistance-program) -- Get a different Medicare drug plan more in line with the drugs you take (www.medicare.gov/plan-compare). One note: You can’t use GoodRx along with a deductible from Medicare or Medicaid, but you can use it instead of those. Beware whether you’ll reach your annual deductible if you don’t use a Medicare drug plan or if you’re in the doughnut hole (cover gap) already. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

CACFL Earns Reaccreditation from National Children’s Alliance BY MARISA ENZINA
T
he Child Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes (CACFL) has been awarded reaccreditation by National Children’s Alliance following an extensive application and site review process. As the accrediting agency for Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) across the country, National Children’s Alliance awards various levels of accreditation and membership to centers responding to allegations of child abuse in ways that are effective and efficient and put the needs of child victims of abuse first. Accreditation is the highest level of membership with National Children’s Alliance and denotes excellence in service provision. Accredited CACs must undergo a reaccreditation process every five years to ensure that best practices are continually being applied. With accreditation standards being updated in 2017, reaccreditation this year reflects the CACFL’s commitment to providing evidence-based methods practice. The CACFL first opened its doors in 2008 as a program of the Partnership of Ontario County. The CACFL first received accreditation from the National Children’s Alliance in 2012 and became an independent non-profit organization in 2019. The CACFL serves approximately 300 children each year in Ontario, Seneca and Yates counties. As an Accredited Member of National Children’s Alliance, the CACFL is dedicated to providing comprehensive, coordinated and compassionate services to victims of child abuse.
National Children’s Alliance also considers standards regarding a center’s cultural competency and diversity, forensic interviews, victim support and advocacy, medical evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and child-focused setting. “The Child Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes is to be commended for its continued commitment to effectively serving victims of child abuse. As the national association and accrediting body for Children’s Advocacy Centers across the country, our goal is to ensure that every victim “The Child of child abuse has access to Advocacy Center of high quality services that the Finger Lakes is result from professional to be commended for its continued collaboration. HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.

How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
