TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION
Real Estate _____________________6
With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious.
Sip & Dine _____________________8 Vibes & Rants ____________________27
PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime.
Worship ____________________12
SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. Suggestions from Melanie Marcus, MA, RD, health and nutrition communications manager for Dole Food Company - www.dole.com

MOVING SAFELY DURING THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS (NAPSI) — If you and your family plan to move soon, you’ll be pleased to know that moving is considered an essential service. How professional movers go about that, however, varies from state to state and the manner and degree to which they’re enforcing social distancing and permitting businesses to operate if they’re considered essential. So, if you or someone you know needs to move, the experts at the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) recommend you regularly check such resources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stay up-to-date on the latest news. Smart Moves To keep consumers and movers healthy and safe during the pandemic, AMSA offers these 10 moving-time facts and tips: 1.For the health of your family and moving crew, always follow CDC guidelines. 2.Work directly with your movers to determine the best time and method for your move. 3.The moving company you choose should alert you if there are any disruptions in service as a result of federal or state action. 4.Help your movers serve you in the safest way possible. Notify them ahead of time if anyone in your household may have contracted coronavirus, or may have been exposed to someone who has. 5.Check your professional mover’s website and feel free to ask questions on how the company is mitigating health risks. 6.If you’ll feel more comfortable, ask if your professional mover can provide virtual estimates, rather than one based on an in-home visit.
1. Angel asleep in the garden 2. The best view of Hemlock Lake!! 3. T-shirt of the week! 4. A boy & his best friend at the Ring of Fire!
7.Try to provide your moving crew access to a sink, soap, and paper towels throughout your move. If this isn’t practical, provide hand sanitizer or wipes.
SPORTS • EVENTS CELEBRATIONS VACATIONS
8.If you plan to prepack any items, purchase new moving boxes and tape from your mover; this isn’t the time to use recycled boxes from online sources, or from stores. 9.Your mover may also have plastic bins available for rental. Wipe down the interior and exterior with a disinfecting wipe before packing anything in them. 10. Consider deep cleaning your new home before unpacking to mitigate further the risk of contracting disease.

SEPTIC TANK PUMPING
by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
GRAVE STONES The term “gravestone” is derived from the Jewish custom of visitors placing stones at the head of the grave as a means of honoring the deceased. This tradition of placing pebbles on a grave dates back thousands of years. Yet, the exact origin of the practice remains unclear. One explanation is based on the belief that Jewish priests, at the time of the Temple in Jerusalem, became ritually impure if they came within four feet of a corpse. To guard against this possibility, graves were marked with piles of rocks to warn the passing priests to keep their distance. Today, the tradition is largely followed so that cemetery visitors can show that the grave has been visited and tribute paid. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. To meet the unique needs and budgets of every family we serve, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME offers a diverse range of funeral services and products. Please give us a call to learn about our funeral services. If you have any questions about our funeral and memorial services, please call (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Tombstones covered the dale, the smooth marble surfaces bright. She had spent days here as a teenager, though not out of any awareness of mortality. Like every adolescent, she intended to live forever.” ~ Thomm Quackenbush

Help Fight Off Fleas With Brewer’s Yeast DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Regarding cats with fleas, I have had great success eliminating fleas by adding powdered brewer’s yeast to their food. One of my cats even licked it out of her bowl dry. Brewer’s yeast is usually available at health food stores. -- Suzanne F., via email

DEAR SUZANNE: Thank you for the tip! Brewer’s yeast is a great nutritional supplement for cats and dogs, and many owners have observed that their pets have fewer fleas when it’s added to their food. It can certainly be a strong asset to a well-rounded flea fighting strategy. For cats and small dogs, sprinkle about half a teaspoon on their food at mealtimes. For medium dogs up to 30 pounds, increase that to a teaspoon. For every 30 pounds over that, add a teaspoon of brewer’s yeast. Consistency is important. Brewer’s yeast, unfortunately, does not repel ticks, so pets -- even those who stay indoors -- should be checked regularly throughout the spring, summer and fall for these little hangers-on. Brush your pet’s coat daily to remove flea eggs and any remaining fleas. Owners may need to use stronger flea and tick treatments in addition to brewer’s yeast, but it’s still a great ally in the fight against fleas. Other flea prevention strategies include vacuuming your home twice a week during peak season to reduce tracked-in fleas and their eggs, and quickly ruffling your pet’s coat with a towel and cleaning their paws when they come indoors. Bathing your dog or cat can help reduce irritation from flea bites, but only use shampoos designed for pets to keep their skin from drying out and becoming more irritated. Send your flea-fighting tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Monroe County 4-H Teen Leaders Share How to Curb our Carbon Appetite “W BY LORI KOENICK
hat is the atmosphere and what are some reasons why Earth’s atmosphere is important to life?” 4-H Teen Leader, Dayana, poses to a class of eighth graders. This question kicks off the Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge. The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (CCE-Monroe) 4-H program took part in the 2021 National 4-H Ag Innovators Experience (AIE) this spring. This experience, sponsored by National 4-H Council and Bayer, empowers local teen leaders to teach a lesson to younger youth on how we can apply STEM skills to address real life agriculture challenges. This year’s lesson is “Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge.” Through hands-on activities and demonstrations, teen leaders help youth understand the effects of higher levels of atmospheric carbon on Earth’s temperature and share ways we all can reduce our carbon footprint. CCE-Monroe 4-H partnered with the Upward Bound Program at Monroe Community College to select and support four youth leaders. Upward Bound Program Coordinator, Alice Gray, supported the teen leaders throughout the experience. To prepare for teaching, teen leaders participated in 30 hours of training for this experience. Gray shares the teen leaders’ confidence and comfort with the materials grew throughout the training and with each teaching experience. “Our teen leaders put in a lot of hard work to learn the material and prepare for teaching,” Gray said. “At the beginning, our teen leaderswere apprehensive. Then, as they started teaching, they made the lesson their own and their leadership skills grew. It was impressive to see them adapt activities for a virtual learning environment and with the different age groups.” As part of preparing to teach, teen leaders reflected on their own experience in the classroom as a student and what they appreciated about different teachers’ teaching styles. After teaching the Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge, teen leaders took away a better understanding of what happens on the other side of the classroom. Teen Leader, Dayana, shared that students will pick up on and respond to the effort and energy teachers show. Remembering the importance of having a good attitude and showing confidence helped her overcome fears of being in front of a group. In addition, Dayana shared she learned the importance of balance when teaching. “It is important to be attentive, but not overbearing to give students the space to process and ask questions,” Dayana said. Teen leaders taught over 130 Monroe County youth ways that we all can reduce our carbon footprint and fight climate change. Lessons were taught in school and community settings. Sheila Eagan teaches English as a New Language (ENL) to grades 3-5 at Helen Barrett Montgomery School No. 50. Teen Leaders taught the Curbing Our Carbon Appetite Challenge to two of Eagan’s classes this spring. Lessons included building atmospheric carbon models to represent climate change effects on Earth and creating a carbon-friendly lunch. In addition, teen leaders discussed carbon-friendly actions that agriculture, businesses and industry, and individuals and families can take to benefit their community. Eagan shared she enjoyed when teen leader, Morgan, built the atmospheric carbon models. “It was great to have a visual of how the greenhouse effect actually works, especially for my English Language Learners,” Eagan said. “Being able to ‘see’ what the greenhouse effect does after making some hypotheses was a nice connection to science.” From training to teaching, teen leaders’ confidence and knowledge grew throughout the program. Teen leader, Kadejah, shared she will use the leadership and teaching skills from AIE in her future endeavors. “At first, I was kind of scared to teach,” Kadejah said. “As I did it more and more, I felt more comfortable in leading the kids and directing them through activities. I enjoyed learning about and teaching ways we can help the environment.”

Monroe County 4-H Teen Leaders taught Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge to 130 youth in 3rd-8th grades this spring! Having teen leaders teach helps younger students feel more engaged and relate to the subject matter. “Having [teen leaders] teach our younger students shows them what is possible,” Eagan said. “Watching them light up with questions and connections on climate change was wonderful. Climate change is such an enormous problem, and our young people are going to bear the brunt of it, so getting them engaged with the problems — and, more importantly, the solutions — is incredibly incredibly important.” Teen leaders appreciated watching youth participants learn throughout the Curbing Our Carbon Appetite Challenge. “My favorite part of this experience has been being able to witness the learning experience and growth of the participants,” Teen Leader, Noem, said. “To see [participant’s] faces glow when they see that they can make a difference is so rewarding, and it makes me feel like I’m making a difference.” - Kadejah, Teen Leader The Monroe County 4-H Program is offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension to the youth of Monroe County. 4-H is a worldwide youth development program open to all youth ages 5 to 19, who want to have fun, learn new skills, and explore the world. In return, youth who participate in 4-H find a supportive environment and opportunities for hands-on or “experiential” learning about things that interest them. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Keeping Track At some point we need to start making notes. Maybe you’re not there yet. But that day might sneak up on you when you discover that you’ve forgotten to mail the check for your property taxes. Or worse, when a police officer stops you and says your license tags expired -- three months ago. Forgetting the car tag might be excusable if your town no longer sends out notices. Or if you had the same vehicle for eight years and tags were always due the same month each year, and now you have a new vehicle with a different due date. But when you’ve lived in the same home for 30 years and you forget to pay the property taxes ... that’s when you know you need to start making notes. A good way to do this is with an annual calendar. When you flip the page, there in bright letters are your tasks for the month. If one of the tasks happens to fall in the first week of the next month, make a note in the last week of the previous month. Use the previous year’s calendar, flip through all the pages, make your notes and you’ll be all set. ... Unless those tiny squares just won’t do the trick, which is possible if you’re still working or have a long list of tasks to accomplish on a weekly basis. For many years I’ve used an 8-by-11 notebook. Each page is a week, divided with lines into six boxes, dated. The weekend, when theoretically there are no urgent tasks, gets Saturday and Sunday in one box. It might seem silly to start keeping such a detailed calendar of things you need to do. After all, haven’t you always remembered when the car tags are due? Until you don’t, and are reminded by a police officer. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

HOW TO PREP YOUR YARD FOR SUMMER PARTIES Protect your guests from insects. Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. In addition, if there are any areas around your property where water has gathered, such as bird fountains or puddles from recent rains, do your best to get rid of that water. Water attracts many insects, which lay their eggs in the standing water. The less standing water around your property, the less likely any uninvited insect guests are to appear.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Choose the right date and time Plan when to hold the sale by looking at the calendar and choosing an open weekend. Many people host their yard sales on Friday, Saturday or Sunday mornings, theorizing that this is when the most people will be free to browse their wares. Begin early in the morning so that shoppers will not need to disrupt their schedules much to visit neighborhood sales. A 7 a.m. start time will attract the early birds and free up most of the day.

‘BREATHE EASIER’ HEALTHCARE DONATION PROGRAM
TOP DOLLAR PAID $$ $$ FOR CARS & TRUCKS
(NAPSI)—Healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic are in desperate need of creative solutions to the lack of personal protective gear and supplies that help block harmful airborne pathogens. But civic-minded companies can help.
Good Runners or Junkers
For example, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker, an electrostatic topical nasal gel that prevents airborne particles from entering the nose, created the “Breathe Easier Healthcare Workers Donation Program.” The firm offers free nasal gel to any healthcare professional who’d like to try it. Requests can be sent via www.NasalGuard.com. “NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.” The company has long believed in giving back and has donated thousands of units of NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker nationally and internationally through a number of well-known charitable organizations.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Get cobwebs off a window screen with a lint roller. * Want to make that summer at-home pedicure last? Don’t skip the base coat or a UV topcoat. The base coat will allow the color to adhere evenly and better. Then the topcoat will protect the color from the sun while giving it a little extra shine. * “Use an over-the-door shoe holder to house your makeup and hair accessories, plus jewelry and other personal items. You can trim a curtain or piece of fabric to fit over the length of it, and tie it to the top if it looks too messy in your room.” -- M.K. in North Carolina * Use this trick to freshen your stuffed animals. Dust with baking soda and put several together in a large paper grocery bag until it’s half full. Fold the top of the bag down and shake vigorously. Remove the stuffed friends and shake off any excess baking soda. For good measure, put the dustedoff toys in a low- or no-heat dryer cycle for 10-15 minutes. * Hashbrowns can be made on a waffle iron. Coat liberally with canola oil or butter-flavored nonstick spray, and add shredded potatoes and finely diced onion. Allow the iron to cook the potatoes to your desired level of crispness, and flip out both sides onto a plate. They will be both crisp and soft! * Honey has amazing properties, and one of them is its antiseptic powers. You can even use it on pimples. Just a tiny dab will help keep bacteria responsible for breakouts from taking over. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.
1. In a large paella pan, sauté the onion and garlic in the olive oil over medium heat. Add the tomatoes and bay leaves, and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the squid, cuttlefish, lobster, and a pinch of salt, and cook, stirring, for a minute or so more.

2. In a saucepan, bring the chicken stock and wine to a boil. As it boils, add the rice to the fish mixture in the paella pan and blend thoroughly. Ladle three-fourths of the boiling stock over the rice and bring to a boil. Season the rice with more salt to taste. Reduce the heat to low and mix well, distributing rice evenly in the paella pan. Continue to cook the rice for 18 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. While the rice is cooking, heat about 1 inch of water and a drizzle of olive oil in a separate sauté pan, then add the mussels. Steam until the mussels open, then transfer to the paella pan with a slotted spoon. Steam and transfer the clams in the same way. Take 1 cup of the clam water and whisk together with the saffron in a small bowl. Add to the paella pan, and simmer the mixture for 5 minutes more. Serve the paella directly from the paella pan.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE.
We specialize in collision repair, so you can count on us for quality work.
In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers.
Frame straightening, custom color matching, dent and ding removal, insurance specialists
The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today.

Petty behavior To the officer who was giving out numerous parking tickets on Friday evening, July 2nd to the people who parked at the abandoned [local building] in [local town] in order to simply walk across the street and attend [local event]. Seriously? For many of these people, it was the first time in over a year that they were finally able to get out and do something fun, and your response is for them to return to their car and see that they have been slapped with a parking fine for parking at a vacant premises? Wake up! Community relations do matter!
S E V RA Thank you so much! Tom Martin: what a true gentleman! My father always told my brothers before they left the house each time to behave like a gentleman and a scholar at all times. Tom, you certainly are one, a country one at that from beautiful Caledonia. Thank you for calling me about finding my wallet. Left it on the top of my car! Thanks, landscapers! It’s so sad to see how the public and employers treat these hard-working underpaid landscapers. Mind you, most of these landscapers worked through the whole pandemic in all kinds of weather, and physical jobs for peanuts! Show some love for these true hard-working men and women!
Borrowing from Social Security I’m 85 yrs old. I started working when I was 14 yrs old. I paid into Social Security until I stopped working when I was almost 76 years old. I can remember several occasions when our Social Security fund was robbed. Earlier this year, $435 billion was stolen (if my memory is correct), from Social Security. In the last month while there were cries of the imminent bankruptcy of Medicare, billions were stolen again. Medicare is not a gift; we paid into that fund for many years. Each month, I pay over $148. Higher wage earners pay hundreds more a month. So the story goes again. Also, Medicaid and Medicare are always referred to in the same breath. People do not pay for Medicaid.
Independence Day article Thanks to Ken Paulson for his story on the Declaration of Independence! We appreciated reading that! Huge thanks! I would like to say a huge thank you to the Ontario County Sheriff, the West Bloomfield Ambulance, Canandaigua Ambulance, the ALS Crew, and all volunteers or not who acted so fast on June 22nd, 2021, around 3:15pm. The first responder on scene was an Ontario County Sheriff who replaced my husband’s tourniquet with a much better one, and everyone’s wisdom on artery lacerations saved my husband’s life! He had cut his thigh and was bleeding out fast. I called 911 and told the dispatcher what I needed, and they, in turn, had a Sheriff in the area. God Bless You All! Thanks as well to the nurses and technicians on 3 East and ER and surgical doctors and nurses. Surgery took about four hours! Started at 10pm and ended about 2am. I ask people to try to be kind, remember police, fire, ambulance, etc. are all here to help. Shake someone’s hand and tell them how appreciated they are, please. More praise, less grumble. Prayers and appreciation to all of you who had part in saving another life! You all are the best! You give us hope! Stay safe; stay well. Blessings from the man with a box cutter & wife.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old woman. I am 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weigh 107 pounds. I take no medication. When I went to the doctor last week, he found that my alkaline phosphatase was 176, my ALT 10, and my AST 11. He told me I had fatty liver and to get a scan, but I had no way to get to the place to have it done. He did not say anything else about it. I have no symptoms. Does this sound like fatty liver to you? I did not really like my doctor, but with my insurance it is hard to change doctors. If I do have fatty liver, is there anything I can do for it? -- J.F. ANSWER: Fatty liver is an increasingly common problem. Risk factors include being overweight and having diabetes, high blood pressure and abnormal blood cholesterol levels. Alcohol use is also a cause of fatty liver, and all people with fatty liver are strongly recommended to abstain from alcohol entirely. The primary treatment is diet and weight loss. It sounds like there was some missed communication between you and your doctor. Fatty liver is a possibility; however, it does not seem likely to me, as you have not identified any of the risk factors, and you are certainly not overweight (if anything, you are a bit underweight). Further, although the alkaline phosphatase can be elevated in fatty liver (yours is just a bit high), it is more common for AST and ALT to be elevated, which yours are not. An ultrasound scan is a good, but not definitive, way of looking for fatty liver. A liver biopsy is still the definitive test, but it’s often not done in people whose history, physical exam and ultrasound are all suggestive. A slightly abnormal alkaline phosphatase does not necessarily mean you have a liver problem. Bone issues (fractures, Paget’s disease of bone, high thyroid and parathyroid hormone levels) can cause a high alkaline phosphatase, too. Additional liver tests -- checking the GGT level or specifically what kind of alkaline phosphatase you have (by isoenzyme analysis) -- can make the source of the elevated alkaline phosphatase clearer. Getting an ultrasound scan and additional blood tests is a reasonable place to start. Unfortunately, lack of confidence in your physician is a different problem. If you really can’t get a new doctor, then you need to have a conversation about proceeding with evaluation in such a way that you can do so while being confident that you are getting good advice. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can help people combat stress for several hours afterward.
