STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4
• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf
• 2 cups half-and-half
• 4 egg yolks
• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)
1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.
3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.
4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.
Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.
Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Wow, have we been taken advantage of For nearly an entire school year my family has transported one or two non-family member children to and from activities on the pretense that our adult group is friends (our children get along okay). Now after having asked on several separate occasions for help with transports for our child, we have been given one lame excuse after another to not reciprocate. Additionally, the 'friends' group recently, oops, forgot to extend a picnic invitation to their service staff - us! But we've actually been asked if we are 'helping out' next year!
We have never been offered compensation (which would have been greatly appreciated) in any form even though these pickups and dropoffs were not convenient, actually adding 15-20 minutes to our trips.
So next year, thoughtless people, best of luck finding consistent free help. Not gonna be these chumps.
My husband and I were at the New Countryside Family Restaurant in Clifton Springs on Saturday 6/22 when we were pleasantly surprised. A couple of motorcyclers went out of their way to make a man, who was sitting alone, comfortable and happy by simply insisting on sitting with him to have conversation and a meal together. Yes, it's totally legal to mow your lawn outside of quiet hours, but there are other social contracts. My neighbor mows multiple times a week at 8am. I work night shifts, as do many others. Even if I didn't, it's so noisy and takes forever. If my neighbor needed a favor from me, well, you messed with my sleep. So many times. Why should I uphold my side of that social contract? Medicines Usually Maintain Efficacy Past Their Expiration Dates
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently tested positive for COVID using an expired home test, and I selfisolated for five days. I also realized every Tylenol, antihistamine, DayQuil, NyQuil and allergy pill that I had was past its expiration date. Some were only expired by a few months, but most were expired by two to four years. I guess I don’t get sick often. My question is: Before I dispose of these, how effective are they, and are any of them dangerous to use? -- K.L.
ANSWER: Drug manufacturers are required to make expiration dates, and they guarantee that the drugs are what they say they are and are effective until a certain date (at least if they are properly stored in a cool and dark area). This does not necessarily mean that they become ineffective or dangerous after expiring, and many drugs have been proven to maintain efficacy for years or decades after the printed expiration date.
A military study found that 90% of drugs are still effective 15 years after expiration. It is rare for a drug to become dangerous; however, the tetracycline class of antibiotics is one where toxicity has been found. In general, if a drug is a few months to a year past its expiration date, it is probably OK. (Liquid drugs, nitroglycerin and insulin are notable exceptions.) But at some point, you have to ask yourself whether it is worth the small risk of the medicine being less effective, especially for inexpensive over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.

Cancer survival rates are on the rise, and that rise can be credited toahostoffactors.Advancements in cancer research and treatment have played a big role in rising survival rates, as have the efforts ofvariousorganizationstopromote cancer prevention and raise awarenessaboutthedisease.
The World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of cancers can currently be prevented by avoiding certain risk factors and implementing evidence-based prevention strategies. However, people can be vulnerable to cancer if they do not pay attention to their bodies or make an effort to protect themselves against certain risk factors for cancer. In such instances, cancer may already have spread to other parts of their bodies, or metastasized, before they are even diagnosed, greatlyreducingtheirlikelihoodof survivingthedisease.
Cancerthatspreadstodistantparts of the body is known as metastatic cancer and is often referred to as “stage IV cancer.” According to theNationalCancerInstitute,when observed under a microscope, metastatic cancer cells feature traitslikethatoftheprimarycancer and do not mimic the cells in the part of the body where the cancer is found. That is how doctors can tell that the cancer is metastatic cancer and has spread from anotherpartofthebody.
When doctors diagnose metastatic cancer, they will refer to it with the same name as the primary cancer regardless of where the metastatic cancer was discovered. For example, the NCI notes that breast cancer that has spread to the lungs will not be referred to as lung cancer, but metastatic breast cancer. In addition, when treating the disease in this example, doctors will treat the cancer as stage IV breastcancer,notaslungcancer.
Understanding metastatic cancer can help recently diagnosed men and women better comprehend theirdiseaseandtheirprognosis.

Hot weather tips to keep your pets safe
• Don’t leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes. e inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees even with the windows cracked open.
• Keep all unscreened windows or doors closed so pets don’t fall out of them.
• Trim longer hair, but never shave your dog.
• Brush cats more o en than usual to help prevent problems caused by excessive heat.
• Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool. Don’t let your pets drink from the pool, ocean or lake.
• Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats.
• Rinse your dog off a er swimming to remove chlorine or salt from their fur.
• Avoid hot surfaces, such as asphalt, that can burn your pet’s paws.
• Don’t walk, run or hike with a dog during the hottest parts of the day or on particularly warm days.
• Make sure your garden plants are safe for pets.

n a world o en dominated by metrics and profits, Joy Bergfalk stands as a beacon of compassion and resilience, channeling her life’s mission into Coffee Connection, a non-profit organization on South Ave in Rochester, and Marketplace Mall in Henrietta, dedicated to helping women reclaim their lives from the grips of addiction, trauma, and incarceration. I felt so blessed to chat with Joy at the Marketplace Mall location during a recent rainstorm.
As nature threatened to demolish all that humans created, I felt at home and at peace as we chatted about life, challenges no one should have to suffer, and the amazing women at Coffee Connection. Joy’s journey from a compassionate child rescuing traumatized animals to a pastor guiding women through their darkest times is nothing short of inspiring. All of our firstworld problems shrink when we consider the challenges others go through.
Joy’s affinity for aiding the vulnerable began in childhood, nurturing traumatized animals from the age of five. is early exposure to the healing process laid the foundation for her calling as clergy. Now a pastor in Rochester, Joy has dedicated her career to working with people who have endured trauma.
Her personal life mirrors her professional dedication. Joy and her first husband adopted five siblings from Guatemala, immersing themselves in the complexities of trauma and recovery within their own family. is experience deepened Joy’s empathy and commitment to her work, as she intimately understands the long and arduous journey of healing from profound personal challenges.
Coffee Connection, based out of South Avenue and in Marketplace Mall’s food court, transcends the typical coffee shop experience. It serves as a sanctuary where women, many with arrest records and histories of addiction, find employment as well as a supportive community as they heal. e organization’s mission is threefold: providing sober support, workplace support, and employment creation. is comprehensive approach ensures that women not only maintain sobriety but also acquire the skills and confidence needed to thrive independently.
Founded in 2001 by Nancy Sawyer-Molina, Coffee Connection was born out of a desire to support women in addiction recovery. When Joy joined in 2011, her merger with her own initiative, Project Empower, brought a renewed focus and energy to the organization. Today, Coffee Connection thrives as a non-profit roaster, offering stable employment and skill-building opportunities for women overcoming significant life challenges.

Ember, once unable to cook, is now celebrated for her culinary skills, particularly her quiche, and helps her peers stay accountable in their recovery journeys.
