DID YOU KNOW? According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS
WHEN IT’S TIME TO CALL IN A TUTOR
Poor time management or focus: Students who are struggling may have their attention drift or they put off doing tasks because they don’t grasp the assignments.
There’s always something new at a farmers’ market, and this can entice shoppers to expand their flavor palates. Explore interesting, locally grown items. Even children may fall in love with colorful fruits or vegetables and their refreshing tastes.
Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4
• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf
• 2 cups half-and-half
• 4 egg yolks
• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)
1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.
3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.
4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.
Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.
Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.
LAWN & LANDSCAPING HOME IMPROVEMENT
BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE
Add a pop of color with planters. Awe-inspiring colors can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when trying to add color to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some color. Bold planters won’t lose their color in a matter of weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters so the colors align with the season. For example, some pastel planters can evoke the spirit of spring, while orange planters can be filled with mums to give a landscape an autumnal feel.

TYPES OF FIREPITS FOR YOUR BACKYARD
OASIS
Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR
Stock up on equipment
A new home bar requires barware and glassware. Various drinks are best served in requisite glassware and prepared with the right equipment. A home bar will benefit from a muddler, jigger, cocktail shaker, strainer, ice cube trays, and bar spoon. Glassware can include short glasses, tall glasses and wine glasses with stems. Martini glasses provide a chic look and are practical for those who prefer cosmopolitans and martinis.

HOW TO CUT COSTS ON HOME RENOVATIONS
Refurbish existing features: Rather than a complete gut and rebuild, figure out where you can revitalize existing fixtures and more. For example, refinishing existing cabinets can save you up to 50 percent compared with the cost of new cabinetry, according to Angi (formerly Angie’s List), a cost comparison and business review resource.
Q&A Master Gardeners with the
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
What are the best kind of mulch to use?
When it comes to choosing the best kind of mulch for your garden, there are several factors to consider. Mulch plays a crucial role in conserving moisture, suppressing weeds, and improving soil health. Here are some popular types of mulch and their benefits:
1. Organic Mulch: Organic mulches, such as wood chips, straw, leaves, and bark, are widely used for their numerous benefits. They break down over time, adding organic matter to the soil and improving its fertility. Organic mulches also help regulate soil temperature, prevent erosion, and promote beneficial microbial activity. Wood chips are particularly effective in suppressing weeds, retaining moisture, and creating a natural aesthetic.
2. Compost: Compost can be used as a mulch or incorporated into the soil. It enriches the soil with nutrients, improves its structure, and enhances moisture retention. Compost mulch also acts as a natural weed suppressant and provides a slow-release source of nutrients to plants. It is advisable to apply compost mulch in a layer of about 1-2 inches to avoid smothering plant roots.
3. Straw: Straw mulch is an affordable option that is commonly used in vegetable gardens. It helps retain moisture in the soil, reduces weed growth, and protects plants from soil-borne diseases. Straw also breaks down slowly, contributing to soil fertility over time. However, it is essential to source straw from pesticide-free sources to avoid introducing harmful chemicals to your garden.
4. Gravel or Stone: Gravel or stone mulch is a low-maintenance option that works well in arid climates or areas prone to erosion. It allows water to penetrate the soil while preventing weed growth. Gravel mulch also reflects sunlight, keeping the soil cooler during hot summer months. However, it may not be suitable for all types of plants, particularly those that prefer more organic and moisture-retentive conditions.
5. Rubber Mulch: Rubber mulch is a recycled product made from shredded rubber tires. It is long-lasting, doesn’t break down, and provides excellent weed suppression. Rubber mulch also helps retain moisture and insulate the soil. However, it is important to note that rubber mulch may not be suitable for edible gardens due to potential leaching of chemicals.
Ultimately, the best kind of mulch for your garden depends on your specific needs, preferences, and the plants you are growing. It’s recommended to choose mulches that are readily available, sustainable, and compatible with your gardening practices. Experimenting with different types of mulch can help you determine what works best for your garden’s health and aesthetics. Personally, when in doubt go with a double ground hardwood mulch that is not dyed with a color. This will always be a great sustainable choice.

• Berries: Strawberries and blueberries are rich in antioxidant compounds called anthocyanins. Research has linked anthocyanins to a reduction in blood pressure in people with hypertension. In more good news,
• Place your unwashed strawberries on top in a single layer, then cover with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use, ideally within seven days. If you notice one of the strawberries going bad or turning moldy, immediately remove it and discard.

Small towns have amazing heart
VENT
Wow, have we been taken advantage of For nearly an entire school year my family has transported one or two non-family member children to and from activities on the pretense that our adult group is friends (our children get along okay). Now after having asked on several separate occasions for help with transports for our child, we have been given one lame excuse after another to not reciprocate. Additionally, the 'friends' group recently, oops, forgot to extend a picnic invitation to their service staff - us! But we've actually been asked if we are 'helping out' next year!
We have never been offered compensation (which would have been greatly appreciated) in any form even though these pickups and dropoffs were not convenient, actually adding 15-20 minutes to our trips.
So next year, thoughtless people, best of luck finding consistent free help. Not gonna be these chumps.
My husband and I were at the New Countryside Family Restaurant in Clifton Springs on Saturday 6/22 when we were pleasantly surprised. A couple of motorcyclers went out of their way to make a man, who was sitting alone, comfortable and happy by simply insisting on sitting with him to have conversation and a meal together. Small towns have amazing heart! I thank you gentleman for being so kind!
Noise ordinances
Yes, it's totally legal to mow your lawn outside of quiet hours, but there are other social contracts. My neighbor mows multiple times a week at 8am. I work night shifts, as do many others. Even if I didn't, it's so noisy and takes forever. If my neighbor needed a favor from me, well, you messed with my sleep. So many times. Why should I uphold my side of that social contract? Consider others around you always. If not because you're a decent person, but if only to have a peaceful symbiotic relationship with someone you should theoretically trust.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Medicines Usually Maintain Efficacy Past Their Expiration Dates
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently tested positive for COVID using an expired home test, and I selfisolated for five days. I also realized every Tylenol, antihistamine, DayQuil, NyQuil and allergy pill that I had was past its expiration date. Some were only expired by a few months, but most were expired by two to four years. I guess I don’t get sick often. My question is: Before I dispose of these, how effective are they, and are any of them dangerous to use? -- K.L.
ANSWER: Drug manufacturers are required to make expiration dates, and they guarantee that the drugs are what they say they are and are effective until a certain date (at least if they are properly stored in a cool and dark area). This does not necessarily mean that they become ineffective or dangerous after expiring, and many drugs have been proven to maintain efficacy for years or decades after the printed expiration date.
A military study found that 90% of drugs are still effective 15 years after expiration. It is rare for a drug to become dangerous; however, the tetracycline class of antibiotics is one where toxicity has been found. In general, if a drug is a few months to a year past its expiration date, it is probably OK. (Liquid drugs, nitroglycerin and insulin are notable exceptions.) But at some point, you have to ask yourself whether it is worth the small risk of the medicine being less effective, especially for inexpensive over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
Also, COVID test kits may have an extended expiration date. The Food and Drug Administration maintains a list at tinyurl.com/COVIDTestKitExpire.
Cancer survival rates are on the rise, and that rise can be credited toahostoffactors.Advancements in cancer research and treatment have played a big role in rising survival rates, as have the efforts ofvariousorganizationstopromote cancer prevention and raise awarenessaboutthedisease.
The World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of cancers can currently be prevented by avoiding certain risk factors and implementing evidence-based prevention strategies. However, people can be vulnerable to cancer if they do not pay attention to their bodies or make an effort to protect themselves against certain risk factors for cancer. In such instances, cancer may already have spread to other parts of their bodies, or metastasized, before they are even diagnosed, greatlyreducingtheirlikelihoodof survivingthedisease.
Cancerthatspreadstodistantparts of the body is known as metastatic cancer and is often referred to as “stage IV cancer.” According to theNationalCancerInstitute, when observed under a microscope, metastatic cancer cells feature traitslikethatoftheprimarycancer and do not mimic the cells in the part of the body where the cancer is found. That is how doctors can tell that the cancer is metastatic cancer and has spread from anotherpartofthebody.
When doctors diagnose metastatic cancer, they will refer to it with the same name as the primary cancer regardless of where the metastatic cancer was discovered. For example, the NCI notes that breast cancer that has spread to the lungs will not be referred to as lung cancer, but metastatic breast cancer. In addition, when treating the disease in this example, doctors will treat the cancer as stage IV breastcancer, notaslungcancer.
Understanding metastatic cancer can help recently diagnosed men and women better comprehend theirdiseaseandtheirprognosis.

IJoy Bergfalk:
BY SUZIE WELLS
n a world o en dominated by metrics and profits, Joy Bergfalk stands as a beacon of compassion and resilience, channeling her life’s mission into Coffee Connection, a non-profit organization on South Ave in Rochester, and Marketplace Mall in Henrietta, dedicated to helping women reclaim their lives from the grips of addiction, trauma, and incarceration. I felt so blessed to chat with Joy at the Marketplace Mall location during a recent rainstorm.
As nature threatened to demolish all that humans created, I felt at home and at peace as we chatted about life, challenges no one should have to suffer, and the amazing women at Coffee Connection. Joy’s journey from a compassionate child rescuing traumatized animals to a pastor guiding women through their darkest times is nothing short of inspiring. All of our firstworld problems shrink when we consider the challenges others go through.
Joy’s affinity for aiding the vulnerable began in childhood, nurturing traumatized animals from the age of five. is early exposure to the healing process laid the foundation for her calling as clergy. Now a pastor in Rochester, Joy has dedicated her career to working with people who have endured trauma.
Her personal life mirrors her professional dedication. Joy and her first husband adopted five siblings from Guatemala, immersing themselves in the complexities of trauma and recovery within their own family. is experience deepened Joy’s empathy and commitment to her work, as she intimately understands the long and arduous journey of healing from profound personal challenges.
Coffee Connection, based out of South Avenue and in Marketplace Mall’s food court, transcends the typical coffee shop experience. It serves as a sanctuary where women, many with arrest records and histories of addiction, find employment as well as a supportive community as they heal. e organization’s mission is threefold: providing sober support, workplace support, and employment creation. is comprehensive approach ensures that women not only maintain sobriety but also acquire the skills and confidence needed to thrive independently.
Founded in 2001 by Nancy Sawyer-Molina, Coffee Connection was born out of a desire to support women in addiction recovery. When Joy joined in 2011, her merger with her own initiative, Project Empower, brought a renewed focus and energy to the organization. Today, Coffee Connection thrives as a non-profit roaster, offering stable employment and skill-building opportunities for women overcoming significant life challenges.
Remarkably, Joy has served as the Executive Director of Coffee Connection without pay for a decade. Her pastoral role funds her life, allowing her to devote her heart and soul to the organization. is selflessness underscores her unwavering commitment to the

cause, demonstrating that true wealth lies in lives transformed and hope restored.
Joy’s leadership has facilitated numerous collaborations with local businesses and organizations, including Kitty VanBortel and Parkleigh, amplifying Coffee Connection’s impact across Rochester. ese partnerships provide employment opportunities and foster a sense of community and shared purpose, reinforcing the organization’s mission.
Under Joy’s guidance, Coffee Connection has become a hub of transformative stories. Women like Stacey, Joyce, and Ember exemplify the profound changes that can occur within a supportive environment. Stacey, with 18 years of sobriety, manages bookkeeping and human resources, a far cry from her past struggles with homelessness and crime. Joyce, who battled alcoholism and depression for fi een years, now manages catering and the Marketplace Mall location, attributing her three years of sobriety to the camaraderie and support she found at Coffee Connection. Ember, once unable to cook, is now celebrated for her culinary skills, particularly her quiche, and helps her peers stay accountable in their recovery journeys.
e coffee at Coffee Connection represents more than just a beverage; it symbolizes ethical and sustainable practices. Sourced organically and fairly traded from countries like Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Sumatra, and Ethiopia, each cup supports fair compensation and eco-friendly practices.
Bergfalk’s unwavering dedication has transformed Coffee ConnectionintoabeaconofhopeinRochester. roughherleadership, the organization provides a lifeline to women overcoming addiction, trauma, and incarceration. By offering employment, support, and a sense of community, Coffee Connection empowers women to reclaim their lives and look towards a brighter future.
Joy’s journey is a testament to the power of compassion and the profound impact one individual can have on countless lives. As patrons sip their coffee and savor the baked goods, they are not just enjoying a treat... they are supporting a transformative mission that reaffirms the potential for redemption and the enduring power of community.

DISTRACTIONS THAT CAN AFFECT EFFICIENCY AT WORK
The internet: The CareerBuilder survey found that employers believed the internet is the second biggest productivity killer. Professionals with a lot on their plates should do everything they can to avoid surfing the internet during the workday. The internet can be a rabbit hole, and even individuals who only intend to take a brief break from work to check the news or clear their head may soon find themselves moving from website to website while their work piles up. If it’s a mental break you need, get up and take a brief walk around the office instead of surfing the internet.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
Log flume rides allow thrillseekers to extend their fun into the water. The modern log flume may be traced back to old mill rides that used tracks to guide boats through tunnels and hills. Modern log flumes are much more splash-intensive.

* In early 2015, Mattel released Hello Barbie, an interactive talking doll that didn’t just repeat preprogrammed phrases, but could actually hold a twoway conversation. The doll raised major concerns over privacy, however, since the discussions between it and child owners were recorded and sent to thirdparty vendors. Goodbye, Barbie!
