Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES

Serves 6 to 8

2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices

1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey

1/2 cup white wine

Zest of 1 lemon

Juice of 1 lemon

Fresh sage sprigs for garnish

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

CIVIL WAR SHARPSHOOTERS

Sharpshooters played an important role in the US Civil War. Sharpshooters and Snipers were considered a psychological weapon. Officers and artillery gunners on both sides were considered prime targets, as were messengers, drummers, and buglers, as they were lines of communication. e First and Second Sharpshooter regiments formed including marksmen from many northern states, and some states formed their own sharpshooter units within these regiments.

Phelps native, Hiram Berdan, is recognized as the founder of these regiments. Hiram was born here in Phelps in September 6th 1824, third of seven born to John and Hanna Eldred Berdan, were of Huguenot descent.

Not a lot is known of Berdan’s early days in Phelps, except that he received a technical education rather than a classical one. He was a gi ed young man for understanding how mechanical contraptions worked. He studied engineering and attended classes at Geneva’s Hobart College, becoming a mechanical engineer and inventor.

Berdan’s inquiring mind along with his skills turned his theories into practical inventions. He apprenticed for John Hall’s reshing Machine Company, where he made his own innovations to the threshing machine. He established his own company in 1847 to sell his products.

Berdan had as many as 30 patents. Some were for a revolutionary repeating rifle, which he later sold the manufacturing rights to Russia (Russian Berdan Rifle). Others were a distance fuse for shrapnel, a design for a twin screw torpedo gun boat, a long range-finder, a gold separation device, a musket ball, a collapsible life boat, an automated production bread-making machine used to make Army bread (hardtack). An invention that had a lasting legacy was the Berdan primer for metallic cartridge firearms. He sold some of the patent rights to his inventions, which made him a very wealthy man.

diameter target 100 yards away from a resting position without missing a single shot.

So many volunteers came forward that the First U.S. Sharpshooter Regiment of ten companies soon filled and the Second Regiment soon had eight companies. Berdan’s adopted state Michigan sent about 552 volunteers, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Minnesota sent about 2500.

Berdan served as colonel of the First Regiment and Henry A. V. Post the Second Regiment. Berdan later gained the rank of Brigadier General, Chief of the Sharpshooters, over both regiments.

Sharpshooter volunteers, known as “Green Coats,” were issued green uniforms to blend in with the seasonal foliage of the forest and brush. Hiram insisted his men be armed with the latest breech-loading Sharps rifle rather than the cumbersome heavy telescopic target rifles. Berdan encountered great resistance from the War Department, who thought the fast-reloading Sharps would use too much ammunition and a smaller force armed with repeating rifles couldn’t best a larger force armed with muskets.

Berdan successfully shot the eye out of a drawn man target from 600 yards at a public shooting exhibition in Washington, and when President Lincoln, a backwoodsman and fair shot himself, saw this, he invited Berdan to the White House the next day and personally signed the order for the Sharps breechloaders. Soon therea er, due to Berdan’s persistence, the sharpshooters had the Sharps rifles.

Out of 2570 men in both US Sharpshooter regiments, nearly 1300 were killed or wounded in battle, but Berdan’s sharpshooter regiments are known as having killed more rebel soldiers than did any other regiment in the U.S. Army.

Berdan loved guns and was most famous for being one of the best shots in the country. He was known as the best marksmanship in the country for fi een consecutive years (1845 to 1860), and he acquired a large collection of trophies and metals from competition shooting matches to prove it. I would like to think he acquired and honed his skill as a young lad hunting squirrels, rabbits, and deer for his family here in the woods of Phelps.

In early spring 1861, a wave of patriotism swept the North in response to President Lincoln’s call for volunteers to join the Union army. Berdan felt the call, and being one of the best marksmen in the country, he believed he could raise a contingent of the best rifle shots from each northern state. He successfully convinced General Winfield Scott and was given ninety days to recruit.

Volunteer sharpshooters must successfully fire ten consecutive rounds freestanding and hit within five inches of the bullseye of a ten-inch

Hiram Berdan resigned January 2, 1864 to pursue his other interest, inventing! He was active in USSS reunions and encouraged his old soldiers to submit their memoirs, which became the book Berdan’s United States Sharp Shooters in the Army of the Potomac by C.A. Stevens. Berdan died March 31, 1893 and is buried in Arlington cemetery.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS

Greyhounds are very fast. Some retired racing greyhounds can hit speeds as high as 45 miles per hour. While they only achieve such speeds for very short periods of time, that’s still pretty fast.

PAW’S CORNER

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I recently visited an older relative who owns two dogs. Here in the Northeast, air conditioning isn’t common in older houses, and it’s been fairly hot for the past several weeks. When I went in, I saw both her dogs were lying down and panting because it was so warm inside. ere was no water for them, so I filled up their bowls and added a couple of ice cubes to each one. ey both drank nearly all the water. Please remind your readers that heat is dangerous for pets of all kinds, and even if they’re at home and indoors, they’re at risk. Sign me -- Concerned Cousin in Manchester, New Hampshire

DEAR CONCERNED: ank you. You just reminded them, and you’re absolutely right. Water needs to be available to pets at all times, indoors or out.

Heat injuries are no joke. ey can permanently injure or kill pets (and people). While much attention has been given to not keeping pets inside cars during the warm months, there are more danger areas to be aware of.

- If your dog is out in the yard, make sure they have a shady area to rest with plenty of fresh, cold water. Monitor them frequently: every 10 to 15 minutes.

- Homes without air conditioning can get very hot and stuffy, endangering pets of all types. Maintain airflow at all times with a fan and open windows, and always have water available.

When a pet shows signs of heat stress -- panting, lying down, whining or mewing -- get them to a cooler room immediately. If they don’t improve, contact the veterinarian.

Ordinary riches can be stolen; real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you. ~Oscar Wilde, The Soul of Man under Socialism, 1891

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* The oleander is the official flower of the city of Hiroshima. It was the first to bloom again after the explosion of the atomic bomb in 1945.

Charlton Heston was cast as Moses in the 1956 blockbuster movie “The Ten Commandments” partly because he resembled Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses.

* The term “coccyx” (more familiarly known as your tailbone) is derived from the Greek word kokkux, or “cuckoo,” because its curved shape resembles the bird’s beak. * Benjamin Franklin introduced tofu to America in 1770.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.

When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS

Airline miles: Though it might be unconventional, gifting airline miles to the happy couple may save them hundreds of dollars. Men and women with ample airline miles should determine if their agreement allows them to transfer those miles to a loved one. If so, transferring the miles won’t cost the person doing the gifting any money out of pocket, but it can save couples substantial amounts of money on their next trip, including their honeymoon if they have yet to book one.

GREAT WEEKEND GETAWAY IDEAS

Soak up the city lights. Big cities tend to clear out on summer weekends, which can make this an ideal time to visit. City visitors won’t have to contend with the sizable crowds that descend on metropolises in winter, when indoor entertainment is in high demand. That means savvy travelers also may find discounts on live theater and local concerts. It also won’t be as difficult to book reservations at the latest culinary hotspots, particularly for travelers who book early.

Don’t Miss A beat…

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK

Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading.

HOW BUSINESSES CAN SUPPORT THEIR LOCAL LGBTQ+ COMMUNITIES

Don’t hesitate to confront customers. Local businesses often embrace the mantra of “the customer is always right.” But customers who are abusive and/or threatening toward members of the LGBTQ+ community are not right, and business owners should not hesitate to enforce policies designed to respect all customers and make their spaces inclusive for everyone.Business owners can speak with local law enforcement for guidance on how to address threatening patrons.

Botox Injections Used to Treat Overactive Bladder

DEAR DR. ROACH: In two weeks, I am supposed to get Botox injections for my overactive bladder (OAB) and my frequent need to urinate at nighttime. Are these injections safe? Are there any bad side effects? How long do they work? -- D.J.

ANSWER: The initial treatment for OAB symptoms usually consists of lifestyle changes (i.e., quitting smoking and avoiding medications that worsen symptoms at night), pelvic floor muscle exercises, and bladder training. If these are ineffective, medication is often used. If medications don’t work or cannot be tolerated, additional treatments are considered, such as Botox.

The underlying problem with an OAB are uncontrolled bladder spasms. Botox is a powerful suppressor of muscle activity. If just the right amount is used, the excess muscle spasms are reduced, and the person gets good results. However, if too much is used, the person may not be able to urinate spontaneously at all, so your urologist will be giving you instructions on how to self-catheterize, in case you are unable to void your bladder after the injection.

If you note that the leakage has worsened a week or so after the procedure, this is a big clue that the bladder is not functioning after the injection. This can last for months, but typically no more than three months. Fortunately, this complication happens uncommonly, in about 2%-7% of people. Other complications include infections and bleeding, but these are not common. Antibiotics are given to reduce the risk of infection. Very rarely, muscles outside of the bladder are affected, including generalized weakness and eye muscle weakness.

When it works well, most people start noticing benefit in a week or so, and relief typically lasts 9-12 months before another injection is given.

School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

Here’s A Tip

* Repair enlarged screw holes with a wooden golf tee. Use a hack saw to saw it flush, sand and finish!

* Punch holes in paint can rims with a nail so the paint that gets sloshed on the rim will drain back into the can. To seal the can, wipe the rim with a damp cloth, and rub it with a little petroleum jelly and cover with a piece of plastic wrap and tap the lid back into place.

* While boating or fishing, tape small blocks of Styrofoam to your eyeglass arms so they will float if they go overboard. -- R.D. in Florida

DID YOU KNOW?

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

A Winning Summer Reading Program

Thanks to the Rush Public Library staff for a wonderful summer reading program. Readers had lots of books to choose from even with the kids’ book section being closed for repairs. The staff is so enthusiastic and friendly—they are special people! Thanks!

A Huge THANK YOU

In these times of rising food prices, it is so wonderful to see all the items that the Avon community donates to the Avon Food Pantry. They give not only non-perishable foods but toiletries, laundry soaps and overages from their garden. It is heart warming to see all the items coming in to help people in need. A big THANK YOU to all.

VENT

Rude and Dishonest People

Went to CHURCH rummage sale just a few minutes ago. It started at 8. I was the last person in line. Myself and the lady in front of me had to take our time going down two flights of stairs. Over 10 people found out the books were upstairs and made their way past us, almost knocking into us. Then a lady blocked the jewelry spot and no one was able to look. I was pushed again, so I paid for my 2 items and said “Sorry, I’m getting pushed around too much to look further.” The next person in line was a collector. The lady who was taking the money said “I marked these and they weren’t $2.00 each.” He said “it’s what’s marked,” and she said “Ok. Why?” It was a CHURCH trying to raise some money. How do you live with yourself? The cashier even said that wasn’t the price, he didn’t care. I left but paid what the price was. How do you cheat a church?

Balloon Releases Should Be Illegal

I think balloon releases should be illegal. Look it up: the harmful effects of balloon releases. Also you can look up ecofriendly alternatives to balloon releases. Remember, birds, fish, turtles, pets or any animal in the world can suffer due to balloon releases.

COMMON INVESTMENT TERM TO KNOW

Bear market: A bear market is a market in which stock prices sharply decline over a prolonged period of time. Bear markets may be inspired by an array of factors, including rising unemployment.

* On Aug. 17, 1969, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair ends after three days of peace, love and rock ‘n’ roll in rural New York. Promoters expected no more than 200,000 people, but almost half a million showed up, with most getting in free when the gates had to be opened.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE

Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn’t around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves.

PITFALLS TO AVOID FALLING INTO DEBT

Bonus hunting: Another pitfall to avoid is the temptation to use credit cards instead of cash in an effort to accumulate more travel miles or cash back bonuses. Consumers should aspire to use cash over credit whenever possible. Doing so ensures consumers are not spending money they don’t have, which is one of the most common ways that individuals build significant consumer debt.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

A new year often sparks change. Many people aspire to change jobs at the dawn of a new year, and such changes are more frequent than one might think.

Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
