Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.
When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.
Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Scout local garage sales: Garage sales are one way to bargain hunt and benefit the environment at the same time. Who knows what treasures you may be able to find at nearby garage sales? When shopping, set a spending limit and look for certain items you need, such as a bicycle or furniture. You may be surprised to find a quality item that costs much less than a brand new store-bought product.
MOMENTS IN TIME
(The History Channel)
* On June 1, 1926, Norma Jeane Mortenson -- who would become known as the actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe -- is born in Los Angeles. During World War II, a photographer “discovered” the photogenic Norma Jeane working in a California munitions factory.
* On June 5, 1949, bestselling thriller writer Ken Follett is born in Wales. After college he wrote a novel just for the $400 advance, which he needed to fix his car. The book flopped, and after 10 more novels he finally broke through with “The Eye of the Needle” in 1979.
* On June 7, 1962, the banking institution Credit Suisse opens the first drivethrough bank in Switzerland in downtown Zurich. After mounting problems with Zurich’s downtown traffic led to fewer and fewer customers, the drive-thru was closed in 1983.

Drought: The National Integrated Drought Information System reports that the primary direct economic impact of drought in the agricultural sector is crop failure and pasture losses. The Government of Canada notes that areas of western Canada are already experiencing frequent and severe droughts, and scientists expect other areas of the country to be affected by drought more often in the years to come. The same goes for the United States, which the UCS notes has already dealt with severe drought in California, the Great Plains and the midwest.Depleted water supplies are a byproduct of drought, and such depletion can take a toll on crops and livestock.

Why We Love
National Camping Month crossword puzzle
It brings families together. It reminds us of our childhood! It’s fun & a way to take a break from the monotony of life.
1910: Boy Scouts of America is formed by Ernest Thompson Seton and camping is one of the primary activities.
1912: Girl Scouts of America The first Girl Scout camp is built in Georgia.
With time, camping materials and gear have seen many technical advances, too. Waterproof materials like nylon make camping possible in rain and snow. They are also easier to carry and are easily foldable. Campers no longer have to worry about lighting a bonfire or eating tinned food since lightweight aluminum cookware and portable stoves have made cooking easier at campsites.
S’mores are only about a century old The first recipe for s’mores was featured in a 1927 Girls Scout manual.

KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET
by Dick Rogers, principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program (NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States.
What do we know?
Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019.
Who (or what) is at risk?
While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies.
On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed.
You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s.
How can we help protect the bees?
It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers. As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive.
Learn more about how to plant pollinator-friendly gardens that help bees, monarchs and other important pollinators by visiting https://beehealth.bayer.us/home.
Dick Rogers has been a professional entomologist for more than four decades and has been keeping and studying bees for over 40 years. He joined the Bayer Bee Care Program in 2009.

Patient Seems Unsure of ALS Diagnosis
DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). I have been diagnosed with this horrible, debilitating disease, and I don’t know where I am headed. I went to a hospital for a second opinion and additional testing to rule out other possible causes of this numbness. Nary a test was done -- the neurologist looked at the electromyography (EMG) done by a neuromuscular doctor at another facility, and he just agreed with the diagnosis.
I wanted to get tests done to see if it was perhaps a concussion, if it was from using yard sprays or from COVID vaccines, or if it was due to my having a terrible bad back for years, but none of these were even considered. I am deteriorating rapidly. Would you please give me some suggestions? Am I wrong for seeking other causes? -- J.B.
ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with ALS. I understand why you would like to believe there are other possibilities for this because there are no treatments for ALS that can stop the progression of this fatal disease.
The diagnosis of ALS is made after a thorough examination and history review. Electrodiagnostic studies, like an EMG or a nerve conduction test, can help support the diagnosis, but they do not make the diagnosis themselves. The nerve conduction study is normal for ALS, while the EMG shows the nerves that are not connecting to the muscles. Other diseases of the muscles and muscle nerves should be considered. MRI scans are usually performed, as they can identify conditions that mimic ALS.
The terrible back you mention could include a condition called cervical myelopathy, which has some features that can be mistaken for ALS. Routine blood and urine testing should be done to exclude other conditions, such as Lyme disease, and the spinal fluid is sometimes analyzed if the neurologist suspects immune-medicated nerve disease.
However, none of the other possibilities that you mention is likely to be confused for ALS by an experienced neurologist who does a complete exam.
I have three concerns: The first is that you are suggesting you may not have had a thorough evaluation so far. Second, the only symptom you mention is numbness, and although this can occasionally happen with ALS, you are much more likely to have weakness and muscle twitching without numbness. Third, ALS tends to progress slowly, not rapidly.
For all these reasons, and because you need to be sure of your condition, I recommend getting another opinion from a neurologist who doesn’t rely on someone else’s history review and exam.

Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

HOW TO FIND A HOBBY
Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways.
A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people.
Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette.
Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch.
Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money. Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time.
Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

A Slice of Life: Alessio and Sarah Santiago Take Over Salvatore’s Fairport Location
BY SUZIE WELLS
In the heart of Fairport, where the scent of freshly baked pizza mingles with the bustling energy of the community, lies a cherished establishment - Salvatore’s. But this isn’t just any pizza joint; it’s a story woven with familial ties, childhood memories, and a passion for serving others. Meet Alessio and Sarah Santiago, who took over the Fairport location in April 2024.
eir story begins over a decade ago, as East Irondequoit high schoolers working at Salvatore’s E Ridge/Culver location. A er pursuing different career paths - Alessio at Wegmans and Sarah in the banking industry, they have now been together for ten years, married for three, and with their daughter, Alessiana, and three “crazy dogs, Atlas, Ink, and Enzo,” the Santiagos are excited to blend their professional backgrounds in operating the Fairport Salvatore’s location. Alessio runs daily operations and Sarah coordinates marketing and accounting.
Over the past few weeks, the Santiagos and their parents have cleaned and repainted the shop, and Sarah says they’re very thankful for the help of their parents, who have helped without hesitation. eir siblings even traveled across the country for the monumental first day.
Sarah particularly recognizes Ray and Maria LoRe, owners of Salvatore’s E Ridge/Culver and e Garage Door. She says they owe a lot of who they are as employees and now owners to Ray and his dedication to his business: “Ray was our first call when we considered becoming franchisees,” and since then, “Ray and Maria have been by our side from training to reorganizing the kitchen and bringing us supplies from their stores. eir children, who also work at their locations, have been a ton of help as well. To say we are lucky to have this family in our corner is an understatement - we are blessed.”
e Fairport village location was once home to Arrivederci’s Pizza, owned by Sebastian with his mom Connie by his side. Sarah says Sebastian and Mama C are still very much involved, Sebastian owning the building and offering a wealth of community information to the Santiagos, and Mama C still works at the pizzeria at 83 years young! ( ank her for the perfectly baked cookies you’ll see at this location.) Sarah says, “To us, it feels like we’ve known Sebastian and Mama C our entire lives, the way they’ve shared their memories and knowledge with us. We want to make them proud.”
Central to their vision for Salvatore’s Fairport is a commitment to putting employees first, echoing the supportive environment they experienced as young employees. By fostering a culture of camaraderie and mutual respect, Alessio and Sarah aim to create a workplace where every team member feels valued and empowered to excel. Sarah says, “We’re where we are today in large part due to those who invested their
time in us throughout our careers. We want our employees to feel like an extension of our family like we did 15 years ago and still now within the Salvatore’s family.”
As they look to the future, the Santiagos are excited to make their mark on the Fairport community, one slice at a time. From revamping the pizzeria with a vibrant, modern aesthetic (“with a lot more PINK,” Sarah says) to participating in beloved local events such as Fairport Canal Days, Scarecrow Fest, Fairport Music Festival, etc., they are eager to become an integral part of the fabric of Fairport life.
eir proudest moments are not measured in profit margins or accolades but in the smiles of satisfied customers and the sense of belonging they foster within their team and community. And as they navigate the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead, one thing remains certain - with passion, perseverance, and a sprinkle of pink, the Santiago’s Salvatore’s journey is just getting started.
So, the next time you find yourself craving a slice of comfort and community, look no further than Salvatore’s Fairport, where Alessio, Sarah, and their dedicated team await with open arms and a piping hot pizza fresh from the oven.

Keeping your pet healthy on a tight budget
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a dog and a cat, and my last vet visit cost over $300. It’s incredibly difficult to pay for vet care on top of the ridiculous cost of housing, grocery prices and my own health care costs. How can I keep pet care affordable? -- John in Newton, Massachusetts
DEAR JOHN: Pet care can be quite pricey, and I know you want the best for your dog and cat. I just laid out a few hundred dollars for my senior cat’s checkup and tests, so I feel your pain.
e Humane Society of the United States has some good information about cost-saving options, discounted veterinary services and ways to stretch out payments: www.humanesociety.org/resources/are-you-having-trouble-affording-your-pet.
One interesting avenue is veterinary colleges. Today, almost every state has at least one school of veterinary medicine, and many operate lowcost clinics.
Check the town hall or municipal website for upcoming shot clinics. ese are held in many communities at least once a year at an easy to access location (like a pet store) and offer required vaccinations at a very affordable cost. Some clinics also offer microchip services and pet wellness exams for a few dollars more.
Finally, if you have the means and just want to get your budget under control, take a look at pet insurance. ere are a number of companies providing this service, with several coverage options -- including reimbursing the cost of annual exams and vaccinations, as well as care for unplanned injuries and illnesses. Coverage varies, and it’s important to read the fine print and compare plans closely, but it can really help keep unexpected costs from derailing your checking account.

Adam Eaton Empowers Artists, Celebrates the Rochester Community through the Rochester Artist Collaborative
BY SUZIE WELLS
Adam Eaton is Founder and Creative Director of Rochester Artist Collaborative. Born and raised in Rochester and Penfield, he uses photography “as a medium to explore the beauty of Black people in Rochester and examines how art and culture shape our definitions and perceptions of beauty, celebrating diversity and the human spirit. I love my hometown and the beautiful people that live in Rochester.”
Eaton says he always felt he was a creative person, but never fully considered himself an Artist until he discovered photography in 2019. Having spent many years dealing with depression and anxiety, he remembers when he would do something creative, whether it be singing, painting, or whatever, the creative efforts made him feel better.
In 2019, when a ceramics class he wanted to take through Flower City Arts Center was sold out, Eaton took a chance with a photography course, learning about aperture, ISOs, and techniques to successfully use even an iPhone to capture life. While he started out a little bored photographing sunsets and architecture, when he started taking photos of family and friends, his passion ignited and he started his photography practice.
Around the same time, he says he began connecting with different Rochester Artists, participating for instance in the First Friday events at the Hungerford building, where Artists collaborate, find inspiration, and network. As Eaton developed his own practice, he discovered a common refrain: Rochester Artists did not feel supported, o en did not know where to start or what to do to develop their skills, or how to gain traction with the public.
When he heard a good friend intended to move out of the area because of this lack of support, Eaton coordinated an event at the Rochester Contemporary Arts Center, at which the public could meet the Artist and view her significant collection. e event was a success, with all the Artists’ prints selling out, and more importantly, spreading the word about her and other Artists. Eaton loved coordinating that event and as he le , he says he felt inspired to help other Artists.
Eaton founded Rochester Artist Collaborative to “[support] the Artists and creatives who significantly contribute to our city’s cultural enrichment and economic development.” By providing local Artists with resources and opportunities needed to succeed, the RAC “[empowers] them and [creates] a lasting impact.” With this access, the Rochester Artist Collaborative “celebrates creativity and every Artist is provided the opportunity to flourish.”
Eaton says Rochester is home to thousands of Artists practicing part-time or full-time, with music, painting, photography, different art mediums, and a lot of those people have operated in what he calls “silos,” or small groups, but not really connecting in general. So, with Rochester Artist Collaborative, Eaton aims to connect those silos, so they’re not secret or hidden, so they’re organized, so Artists needing support can find what they need.
Eaton says in his journey developingtheCollaborative, he found Rochester art community staples, such as the Memorial Art Gallery, Flower City Arts Center, and the Contemporary Arts Center. He also raves about the Anderson Arts Building, creative home to 40-50 Artists, many of whom have been there for 20-30 years, and the Artists there offer lots of knowledge and wisdom, he says.
Rochester Artist Collaborative aims to grow its network by connecting more Artists through various events and activities, especiallyduringMay,whichisMemberMonth. isperiodwillfeature numerous events designed to promote Artist members and attract new members and sponsors. Additionally, they seek to engage more deeply with the broader community. According to Eaton, community support is crucial for Artists to thrive and continue their creative work.
Eaton thanks the RAC team for their assistance: Studio Assistant ai Huoang, Office Assistant Amanda Smith, Videographer Rajae Barnes-Wright, and Graphic Designer Austin Palozzi; they are integral in making Rochester Artist Collaborative a success.
In addition to his administrative role at Rochester Artist Collaborative, Eaton is a professional fine art photographer focusing on portrait photography and visual storytelling, for example leading “high-profile campaigns for [Rochester area businesses to cra ] brand narratives that resonate authentically and powerfully.” rough his work, Eaton seeks to foster an inclusive and supportive arts community in Rochester, continually exploring innovative ways to visually express ideas and narratives.
Eaton says, “Rochester is filled with beauty,” and as many Black community members suffer daily racism and discrimination, Eaton uses his “power as an Artist to speak about these issues. rough photography, I can capture how I see the world and allow others to see the beauty I experience daily in my community.” His artistic vision focuses on timeless themes focusing on community, honesty, love, and beauty. He is particularly proud of his solo exhibit, “Black is Beautiful,” at Geva eatre, which he intends to reprise each year to celebrate the beauty of Black people around Rochester.

DID YOU KNOW? Statistics from the United States Coast Guard indicate that, in 2019, 86 percent of drowning victims in recreational boating accidents where cause of death was known were not wearing life jackets. The National Park Service reports that drowning is the top cause of visitor deaths in national parks and that nearly all of those deaths are preventable. One of the simplest ways to prevent drowning is to follow the advice of the NPS and wear a life jacket at all times when near or in the water. This includes when wading, swimming, fishing, boating, and engaging in watersports or other water-related activities. The NPS notes that there are three types of life jackets, but only two come in child and infant sizes. Inherently buoyant (primarily foam) life jackets and hybrid (foam and inflation) life jackets are available in child and infant sizes. The NPS recommends both types of life jackets for swimmers and non-swimmers. People who intend to engage in water sports should know that some hybrid life jackets are designed specifically for such activities. The third type of life jacket is inflatable life jackets, which are only available in adult sizes and should never be worn by poor or non-swimmers.

Memorial Day
Local DMV
Memorial Day in our community is a heartfelt celebration combining remembrance with the joyful start of summer. From what I saw, so many towns waved their flags and patriotic decorations, honoring the brave souls who served our nation even through the rain. The annual parade is a highlight, featuring local marching bands, veterans, and community groups proudly making their way down Main Street. Thank you to those involved.
CSA Boxes
Went to local DMV with son to get his permit. He lost his glasses at work so went to have eye appointment to get new ones. With all paperwork in hand from eye exam DMV said there’s no proof of passing eye exam even though he has new prescription for glasses. Had to go back to eye glass place 45 min drive to have eye Dr. Sign paper saying he passed eye test. Then still given hassle because he didn’t have his glasses. What is an eye test paperwork for then. Tired of people wasting time even eye place said same paper they gave him. Just a waste of time on both ends.
A big shoutout to our local farms for the CSA boxes that are starting out for the season. Your hard work and dedication is appreciated!

We would like to thank everyone who was present at Seneca Farms last weekend for tolerating our flamboyant rambunctious cast party. We do realize that we were a little on the loud side, but hey, YOLO! we are honestly so surprised you didn’t critique our exuberant celebrations. we may have had a little too much ice cream, but hey, YOLO! We also would like too thank all of the workers who stayed late to deliver that heavenly treat known as ice cream to each and every one and all of us. Seneca Farms, you are the light that guides us in this confusing world.
We keep talking about high prices for food. There’s all kinds of reasons or excuses for this. COVID? That’s over. Shipping from California Ports. That’s over. Fuel cost vary. So why aren’t costs returning to the original prices? I went into one store for hotdogs. It seemed way too expensive so I went to a different store. I bought 3x the amount for $2.50 more. There’s no excuse other than corporate GREED taking advantage of consumers. I’m sick of these companies or corporations bleeding us dry. The old saying, “the rich get richer, the poor get poorer”is a fact”! Please do your homework even if the store is local or convenient. That’s the only way we can fight back.

Q&A Master Gardeners
My hostas have a milky substance coming out of the new shoots. This is the first time I have ever seen this. I’ve cut off the affected shoots. Any ideas as to the cause of this?
Without seeing the plant to identify exactly what it could be,a white “milky substance” around your hostas could be a number of things, including two of themostcommon:anthracnoseand slime mold.
If it is slime mold, then your approach of “cutting off the affected shoots,” is
spot on. Removing the affected area is the best treatment, being careful not to allow spores to spread. Very often mulch fosters such growth and spores spread even with the best of intentions. I have found the removal of all debris around hostas to be the best practice in preventing slime mold. Larger growth concentrations, though, may call for the use of a fungicide, which I recommend not using without consulting your local Cornell Cooperative Extension Office.
Anthracnoseisalsoafungusandisthe
most common and most widespread in cultivating good hosta growth. The good news with anthracnose is that it won’t kill the plant, but treating it can be tricky. To rid your garden of this fungus could involve a multi-step approach, particularly if the fungus goes unnoticed for some time. I would begin by removing the affected plant and any fungal growth noticeable on the mulch or ground surrounding it. Then, contact your local Cornell Cooperative Extension office. The extension office has at
its disposal a number of resources, including a team of Master Gardeners who can assist with identifying the problem and recommending specific resources for further assistance.
Happy Gardening!

Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marksanearly20percentincrease in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.
