A Look Into the Cosmos: THE 2024 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

Mark your calendars! Western New York is in the path of totality for a once in a generation event! Between 2:07 PM and 4:33 PM on Monday, April 8th, get ready to witness a celestial spectacle unlike any other: the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. is will be our first total eclipse here since 1925, and we won’t have another until 2144. Look at it this way: “If a kid is born on eclipse day 2024, their grandkid’s grandkid will be able to see it,” says Dan Schneiderman, Eclipse Coordinator at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC). Since 2022, Dan’s sole focus has been meticulous planning and preparation for this this once in a lifetime event—that’s how big this is!

With totality promising an unforgettable experience, visitors from far and wide will converge on Western New York. From Jamestown to Buffalo, Rochester to Waterloo, and even all the way to the Adirondacks, for local residents, your backyard itself offers a prime viewing spot, though the longest duration of the eclipse will occur at SUNY Brockport.

“Eclipses are extremely predictable,” Dan says as excitement for the event grows. “ ey follow very similar paths, and there’s one in Rochester every 100-120 years. ere was even a 1925 article in the Democrat & Chronicle mentioning the 2024 solar eclipse.”

With the moon beginning to cover the eclipse around 2:07 PM, Dan warns that eclipse viewing glasses are incredibly important if people wish to look up at the sun outside the window of totality. During totality, viewers can look directly up at the sun to find it completely obscured by the moon.

“It will last for three-and-a-half minutes total,” he says, and you can remove your glasses for this brief window, but be forewarned that when the sun comes back from behind the moon, “it is an icepick of light.”

Totality is not the only kind of eclipse out there—we had an annular eclipse as recently as October 14, 2023! Annular eclipses mean the moon is in front of the sun, but because it is farther from the Earth it appears smaller and cannot block it out entirely, so viewers see sun rings around the moon.

During this year’s total eclipse, the weather should be on the milder side. Dan highlights that totality will be a very visual and physical experience: “ e temperature will drop ten degrees, and it will be dark, like a deep dusk and not quite midnight. It will be like a 360º sunset on the horizon.”

During the eclipse, you will also be able to see Jupiter and Venus along with stars (which are always out, just not visible during the day because of the sun’s brightness), with Orion’s Belt being most notable.

With such a huge marvel on the horizon, there is no shortage of events planned in the area, from every local museum having an event/festival, a 5k, a themed euchre event, and Total Eclipse of the Park in Rochester, there are tons of ways to celebrate and something for every interest!

If you plan on staying home with family as opposed to going out, Dan suggests “really lean[ing] into the puns and have themed snacks: Sunny D., moon cookies, moon pies, Milky Way Bars… Have fun with it.” To go along with eclipse glasses, make your own pinhole viewers with cardboard boxes, or dig around in the kitchen for a strainer or slotted spoon for your own DIY version! (You can look at the ground and check the reflection in whatever tool you choose.)

“Plan ahead; be with your loved ones, because you will always remember who you were with,” Dan says. However you choose to observe the eclipse, it will be one of the biggest positive shared experiences you’ll have in this lifetime.

As the world collectively gazes upward, embracing the wonder of the cosmos, the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse promises to be an unforgettable glimpse into the depths of our universe.

Looking for something to do in our area? Check out some of these local events in the Western New York region! For more events in your area, check out rochestereclipse2024.org.

Per RMSC:

2:07 PM: Eclipse begins as Moon will begin to cover the Sun

3:20 PM: Totality Begins. Duration depends on where you’re in the path of totality

4:33 PM: Eclipse ends for Rochester viewers

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Slower Heart Rates Are More Common in Athletes

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about a resting heart rate, specifically when it is considered too slow for one’s health. I am a 67-year-old male who, from an early age to the present time, has always been physically active every day. Now retired, I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I work out. The endorphin boosts and benefits to my body are my daily rewards. Recently, I received a fitness watch that tracks my heart rate. My nightly sleep sessions show a range of 39-58 bpm over the past month. During a dental visit a while ago, I was told by the hygienist that she knew of an athlete who died in his sleep, and his heart rate was so slow that it just stopped. Is this possible? -- D.M.

ANSWER: This really wasn’t a great thing for the hygienist to say, as there is very little truth to it. Most people who exercise do have a slower heart rate, and it’s a good sign of a healthy heart. However, some older people can develop heart block when the electrical impulse from the natural pacemaker of the heart fails to pass to the ventricles. This is an occasional cause of sudden cardiac death.

Your heart rate suggests, to me, that it’s more likely the healthy heart rate of an athlete than it is a disease of the electrical conduction system, but a visit with your regular doctor or cardiologist can separate this through a simple electrocardiogram in most cases. Some people just have slow heart rates, but they can be treated with a pacemaker if they’re symptomatic. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

DID YOU KNOW?

The exact causes of many headaches continues to confound medical researchers. Though the Cleveland Clinic notes that certain environmental factors, such as exposure to allergens or strong odors from household chemicals, can trigger headaches, the mechanism that causes muscles or blood vessels to swell or tighten remains something of a mystery. During a headache, the mysterious mechanism activates specific nerves that affect muscles and blood vessels, and these nerves then send pain signals to the brain. Harvard Medical School notes that tissues that surround the brain and some major nerves in the brain also can signal pain. HMS also reports that while there are more than 300 types of headaches, only about 10 percent of them have an identifiable cause. And what triggers a headache in one person will not necessarily do so in another. However, HMS notes that people who suffer from migraines, an especially severe type of headache that can increase a person’s risk of heart attack, tend to remain sensitive to the same triggers. That’s good news, as it means that people who can identify their headache triggers can then take steps to avoid those triggers in the future in the hopes of reducing the frequency of their headaches.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE

Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

SIGNS OF WINTER LAWN DAMAGE

Brown patches: The National Association of Landscape Professionals notes that brown patches in a lawn often develop after heavy snowfall. Such patches tend to develop where large piles of shoveled snow were deposited, so homeowners can inspect alongside driveways and walkways. The NALP advises homeowners to rake away part of the brown patches first. If green tissue is emerging beneath, then the lawn will likely be fine in due time. However, if the area beneath is not green and surrounding areas are already turning green, homeowners may need to rake up dead tissue before applying topsoil to the affected spots. Once topsoil is spread, some grass seed can be spread and the grass should regain its green glory.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES

How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.

Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

PAW’S CORNER

Bringing an old dog to heel

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A er my aunt passed away, I gladly agreed to take in her dog, “Hunter,” a rather squat, obese Beagle. He’s a happy old dog of about 9 years, but my aunt gave him little to no training other than housetraining. at makes walking him -- something the vet recommended I do twice a day, in addition to a diet -- a chore. Hunter will walk a few steps, then sit down and refuse to budge. When he does feel like walking, he either tugs the leash forward or lags behind. How can I correct this? -- James T., Plano, Texas

DEAR JAMES: Hunter is not used to the new lifestyle yet, and he’s reacting in a predictable way. He’s also out of shape and probably more stressed than you think. e first thing I prescribe is patience. e second thing I’d prescribe is persistence.

You’ll want to gradually lengthen his walks. Each day, always at the same time, put Hunter on his leash and start the walk. As soon as Hunter begins to lag or tug forward, stop walking, adjust the distance so that he’s standing or sitting next to you, and start again, saying, “Heel” as you step forward.

When he sits and won’t budge, encourage him to go a few more steps by giving him a very small treat. en turn around and go home. On your next walk, repeat this encouragement, going just a little farther. See what I’m getting at? Make each walk just a tiny bit farther.

As Hunter loses weight, learns to trust you and gains confidence on the leash, he will eventually pull you along. Time, patience and consistency will do the trick.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

[Local Town] PD Coverage

Thank you so much to the woman who stopped me and blessed me with gift cards at Wegmans. I have been through a rough time lately and this helped me get my medicine and a salad for lunch. You said it was “Just dollar amount” but to me that was more than I needed and then some. Please know I will pay it forward when I’m back on my feet!

I understand there is a shortage in workforce. However, [local PD] is a 24/7 agency. At a time when public safety matters the most, [local PD] needs to uphold their 24/7 coverage. If necessary, this means [Chief] and [Sergeant] should be forced to cover any shifts that are lacking coverage regardless of the day, night or holiday since [local PD] is a 24/7 agency.

(Literally and figuratively.)

A man with a mission

“BEE” Thoughtful

Every day along Rt 21 or 5&20 near Canandaigua you will likely see a gray pickup truck stopped with orange cones for safety near it. You will see an individual picking up debris and garbage along the roadside. He is not on the payroll. He is a dedicated volunteer who begins his day early and ends his day late. I live on the same street as Malcolm and see him leave in the morning, come home for lunch and return to his mission until late afternoon. So when you see him along the roadside, give a quick two honks on the horn to let him know how much you appreciate his dedication to keeping things clean on our roadways.

As most of us have heard, pollinators are in a steep decline. As one thing you can do to combat this, many reputable garden centers are selling a variety of Mason Bee houses for your yard. Have you read what bee experts say about these houses? Do your research before installing one. Mason Bees are solitary. These bee houses offer a location where eggs are laid and hatch in the equivalent of a cramped tenement. Experts describe them as an environment where diseases run rampant, and they provide an easy target for predators of bees. It’s shocking that garden centers are promoting this trend. Please, before you add one to your garden, research what entomologists say about these houses.

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

Zoological gardens are needed to preserve biodiversity. Zoos provide a home to exotic endangered animals and have a history of saving many animals from being extinct.

By the mid 19th century, zoos were established worldwide. Among the existing zoos of today, more than 40 zoos are 100 years old. 1874 America’s first zoo opens in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A celebration of life gathering will be held Friday, April 19, from 4-7pm, at the enclosed pavilion at Richard P. Outhouse Memorial Park, 2550 Outhouse Rd. (off Buffalo St.), Canandaigua. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ontario ARC, 3071 County Complex Drive, Canandaigua, NY 14424. Arrangements are by Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., Canandaigua. Condolences may be offered at www.johnsonkennedy.com.

Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Dealing with a sudden, unexpected death of a beloved friend or family member can be even more difficult, especially for those people who have to make important financial decisions while grieving.

To remove the burden and stress associated with funeral planning, many adults preplan their funerals. Adults can be as specific as they prefer to be when preplanning their funerals, and doing so gives relatives peace of mind knowing that their loved ones’ funeral services were conducted in accordance to their own wishes.

Benjamin D. McCheyne

March 23, 2024

Benjamin D. McCheyne, age 72, longtime resident of Canandaigua, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2024, at Light Hill in Canandaigua. Benny is survived by his wife, Nancy (Brown) McCheyne who he was devoted to; his four McCheyne siblings, Ann Marie, Mark, Mary, and Roberta; brother-in-law, omas Brown; nephew, Joe Caito; and four nieces, Alexis Caito, Olivia McCheyne, Arika Lynn, and Andrea Overslaugh. He was predeceased by his parents, Esther (Lahr) and Robert McCheyne.

Benny was a trained farrier, calling himself a horseshoer. In 1975, he started his business after graduating from the Midwest Farrier School in Zenia, Ohio. Driving and racing harness horses were also his passions in this era. Ben’s many clients of decades were also his friends. He was shoeing horses up to 5 weeks before his cancer diagnosis in early January.

When told he was called a Horse Whisperer,Benny’s response was that he’d been called many things, some not that good. He will be missed for his way with horses, his sense of humor, and just being the good person he was.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Light Hill, 5160 Parrish Street Ext., Canandaigua, NY 14424. Interment will be in White Haven Memorial Park. A memorial gathering for friends and family will be set in the future. Condolences may be offered at www.johnsonkennedy.com.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS

Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school.

Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift.

A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

HOW BUSINESSES CAN EXPRESS APPRECIATION FOR EMPLOYEES

Cater meals when possible. Employers recognize the key seasons of the year that are crunch times for their particular businesses. Employees may have to work harder or put in longer hours during this time. Set aside one day a week to have lunch or dinner catered for the team.
