DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a contractor coming soon to renovate our kitchen. I plan to keep my cat, “Freya,” out of the way and in a separate room during the day. But at night, she’ll want to wander the house. How do I keep her out of the kitchen? -- Jim in Portland, Maine

DEAR JIM: Cats are pretty wily, and I’m sure Freya will try to find a way around any barriers you set up to keep her out of the kitchen.

e best way to dissuade her from exploring the construction area, therefore, is to tempt her away with better distractions. at means moving her food and water to a new location far from the construction area (but out of heavy foot traffic) and giving her treats and attention whenever she opts to stay in the living room with you or near her bedding and food.

At night, tighten the barriers around the kitchen -- if there’s a door, close it. If there is plastic sheeting up, tack it to surrounding walls and tape it to the floor. Put a sheet of plywood across the entrance if necessary.

Inside the work area, make sure that the contractors put away all sharp tools and cover any containers tightly. ey should clean up any debris at the end of each day and use a wet-dry vacuum to pick up sawdust and dirt. Any spills need to be cleaned completely. is will reduce the risk to Freya if she manages to get into the kitchen, and it’s just good practice.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners.Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further.

I want to thank the kind and honest person who found my credit card at the Webster Post Office a few weeks ago and returned it to staff. It just proves that there are good, honest people who do the right thing. I appreciate it very much and thank you.

My husband and I noticed piles of garbage at our local Town Park. We both decided to pick it up, since there is a constant flow of people. We filled 2 garbage bags with shoes, soup containers, broken glass, clothes, coffee cups and doggy poo bags! Nasty!

Delicious Pizza!

Last Friday, I thought I ordered a pizza from a local pizza shop, but the order never made it through. I contacted the restaurant and the person who picked up the phone said that he would give me a free pizza, size large, including a brownie! If more people could be this kind I think that the community would be so much better! Thank you again!

When we brought this to the attention at the Town office across the street, the lady in charge of the parks department said that “The Park is closed but when it’s open they pick up.” When asked if we could throw the trash in their dumpster, she rolled her eyes and called someone else, while laughing at my husband. Pick up after yourselves so that others do not have to- clearly the Town could care less about the safety of others!

CFarmington Friends Meeting Unveils a Feast for the Senses

ommunity and creativity converged at the Farmington Friends Meeting as they hosted an event showcasing an eclectic blend of art, delectable treats, and charitable endeavors.

e highlight of the event was an art exhibit, featuring works from Friends in the meeting. From traditional paintings to contemporary sculptures, attendees immersed themselves in an array of artistic expressions and learned more about what leads so many Friends in the meeting to create art.

Craig Dove, chaplain, philosopher, and co-pastor at Farmington Friends, said, “Tapping into the creative spirit helps me process some of the more difficult spiritual work I do. I’ve always thought of myself as an artist, but it was only about seventeen years ago that I started taking my participation in the visual arts seriously. I was finishing seminary and finding that my go-to artistic outlets, cartooning and songwriting, weren’t helping me express ideas and aspects of myself that I had been examining in my studies. As I moved into chaplaincy work, engaging in painting and mixed media became an important spiritual discipline for me, leaving me feeling refreshed and energized.”

Craig is from rural Oregon and showcased his acrylic on wooden panel paintings of scenes from the Portland area. He also displayed his kit-built ES335 style 12-string guitar, hand-painted in a 60s pop art style, on which he played a few of his own songs at the event.

Other members of the meeting displayed a range of art, including textile arts, woodworking, painting, sculpture, and more. Norm Cole, who taught high school art at Victor Central School for 34 years, brought a selection of his landscape paintings to exhibit. Christine Frayda, a fiber artist, displayed a handspun, hand-dyed, hand-knit sweater, a square she handspun, hand-dyed, and handwove on a pin loom, and a tatted doily and a crochet doily she made and her grandfather framed decades ago. Cherry Rahn shared portraits, historical figures, satirical figures, and sculptural pseudo-technology, and Louise Smith, owner of Bead and Fiber Fantasy, displayed a selection of her bead and textile work.

Two pieces of the showcased beauty were available through silent auction: hand-made comforters. Many Quakers gather each Tuesday to make comforters, donated to the Mennonite Central Committee for distribution to people around the world displaced from homes due to conflict and natural disasters.

Member Annie Bontrager shared, “My parents grew up in Ukraine in the early 1900s. ey were part of the community of Mennonites invited by Catherine the Great to settle and farm on open land. A er

World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution, when they were sixteen, a famine arose from food being taken away to meet Soviet demands. e Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) formed in 1919 to send food and assistance to Ukrainian Mennonites. Without assistance from American and Canadian Mennonites, they would have starved. I’m very grateful for MCC and have always been a supporter of their continuing work.”

When Annie made and brought her first comforter to the Friends Meeting in 2013, other Friends wanted to participate, and now members work together to make more comforters throughout the year. e Farmington Friends’ comforter project has grown from about twenty comforters per year to over a hundred. Many Friends participate in the project, sewing pieces together, cutting batting, tying the quilts together, donating money or materials, or offering encouragement and prayer. Before sending comforters to MCC, Friends spread them out in the meetinghouse and pray for the people who will receive them.

Funds raised through the comforter silent auction and the accompanying bake sale will purchase more comforter-making supplies.

We were thrilled to invite the community to join us for this special event. It was a wonderful opportunity for people to come together, celebrate the beauty of art, enjoy delicious food, and make a positive impact through their generosity. Ronald “Ron” J. O’Brien April 23, 2024

Lima: Ronald “Ron” J. O’Brien, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully with his family and his loyal dog, Walter, by his side on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. Born on May 4, 1951, to the late Donald and Wilma O’Brien, Ron’s warm heart and kind spirit touched the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

Ron is predeceased by his son, Kevin O’Brien; and his brother, Glen O’Brien. Ron is survived by his devoted wife of 27 years, Patricia “Pat” O’Brien, his children, John (Andrea) O’Brien, Lisa O’Brien, Jenn (Mike) Torres, and Tim Reynolds (Katie Schneider); his siblings, Gary (Debbie) O’Brien, Randy (Cheryl) O’Brien, and Tom O’Brien; his grandchildren, Jonathan (Katherine), Christopher, Ashleigh, Sophia, Isabel, Matthew, and Elijah, along with several nieces, nephews, and a multitude of cherished friends. Ron’s love and laughter brought joy to countless lives, and his memory will forever be treasured.

Ron dedicated 35 years of his life to Eastman Kodak Company, where he forged lasting friendships and contributed his talents to the field of photography. His commitment to service extended beyond his professional life; for 40 years, Ron volunteered with the Lima Fire Department, embodying a steadfast dedication to his community’s safety and well-being. Additionally, Ron devoted 14 years to the Honeoye FallsLima school district transportation dept., leaving a positive impact on numerous students and staff members. His selfless spirit and tireless work ethic were an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Outside of his professional and volunteer endeavors, Ron found immense joy in coaching Little League baseball and All-Stars in Lima, where he shared his passion for the game and served as a mentor to many young athletes. His unwavering commitment to nurturing and empowering others will leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of those he touched.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the Lima Firehouse, located at 7288 West Main Street in Lima, NY. POINTERS ON MOVING TO A NEW HOME BY RENTAL TRUCK

(NAPSI)—Moving yourself to a new home by renting a truck can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these five facts and tips.

• Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of dayyouintendtotravelandlikelytraffic patterns.Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

• Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant.

• Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.

• Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.

• Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.

Apple Cider Vinegar Is a Surprising Help for Blood in Urine

DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, I had anal cancer and was treated with chemo and radiation. The radiation burned my insides and severely damaged most of my internal organs. One of the aftereffects was occasional blood and small clots in my urine. A few months ago, both the frequency and amount of blood, especially the clots, increased dramatically. The size and number of the clots got so large that they blocked my urethra. During a visit to my urologist, he looked into my bladder and declared it “angry.” Then he told me the same thing every doctor has told me about every problem caused by my treatment: “It was caused by the radiation, and there is nothing that can be done.”

Shortly after this, I began to take unfiltered apple cider vinegar in hopes that it would improve my digestive problems. It helped a little, but the big difference was that I have not had a single recurrence of either blood or clots in my urine. Can you tell me if this is due to the vinegar or if it is just a coincidence? -- A.G.

ANSWER: No, I can’t definitively tell you whether the vinegar helped. It was probably by chance, but let me explain a little about it.

Rectal cancer is often treated with radiation, or combined chemotherapy and radiation, either prior to or after surgery. The dose of radiation is quite high compared to some other cancers, and the complications can be significant.

In addition to damage to the bowel and bladder, radiation treatment can damage the bones and bone marrow, leading to poor blood-cell production, infertility, premature menopause, and more cancer years later. On the other hand, radiation is used when it is expected to improve the cure rate of cancer. Still, the side effects can be challenging.

Hemorrhagic cystitis (bleeding from the bladder) can be caused by chemotherapy or radiation. It may start within a few months or as long as 20 years after radiation.

I am surprised your urologist did not offer any treatments, as there are certainly ones available. Although none of the currently available systemic drugs are proven to be very effective, hyperbaric oxygen is one treatment that is, at least, moderately effective. Medicines placed into the bladder and laser bladder treatments are sometimes tried as well.

I was unable to find any study that evaluated the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar. I am skeptical, but reports like yours of apparent improvement associated with its use might convince a researcher to conduct a study to determine whether it really is effective.

INFLAMMATION

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. Whileinflammationisprotectiveby nature,sometimesaninflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families.

A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner.
