TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Vitamin E Unlikely to Cause Ill Effects --DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 47-year-old female in good overall health. About six months ago, I began to take several supplements, one of which was vitamin E (200 IU). I had no noticeable adverse reactions to any of the supplements. About 10 days ago, I started taking 400 IU of vitamin E. Right about the same time as this increase, I began having painful stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and tiredness. After a week of this, someone suggested that the vitamin E might be the cause. I have stopped taking it and have even avoided foods high in vitamin E. Three days later, I’m still having the diarrhea and other symptoms. If the vitamin E was the cause of the symptoms, shouldn’t they have gone away by now? -- K.B. ANSWER: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, so it is possible for levels to build up in the body if it’s taken in high doses for long periods of time. However, toxic effects are unlikely at less than 1,500 IU daily, which is far higher than what you have been taking. Bleeding is one risk at high doses, as is a theoretical deficiency of vitamin A and D. I think it is far more likely that you happened to get a case of gastroenteritis -- inflammation of the stomach/intestines, often caused by a virus. It’s unlikely to be due to the vitamin E. However, since vitamin E supplementation hasn’t been shown to improve any of the many conditions it has been studied for, I don’t recommend that you continue to take it. Go easy on eating for a few days after gastroenteritis: The timetested BRAT diet (bananas, white rice, peeled apples and dry toast) is effective. You can get enough fluid through water or apple juice, along with some salt, like chicken or vegetable broth. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was told that due to the way our food is processed and grown, most people lack magnesium and should take a magnesium supplement. Should I? I read that one symptom of low magnesium can be constipation or irregularity. -- C.B. ANSWER: The prevalence of low magnesium depends on the population. About 2 percent of the general population has low magnesium levels, but among people with diabetes, the rate is about 25 percent. In people who abuse alcohol, the prevalence may be as high as 30 to 80 percent. Some diuretics used for high blood pressure predispose a person to magnesium deficiency. High magnesium foods include leafy green vegetables, nuts, cereals and avocados. The most common symptoms of severe low magnesium are loss of appetite and muscle tremors and weakness. Magnesium is necessary for potassium and calcium balance, so these can be deficient in cases of low magnesium. Since only a small amount of body magnesium is in the blood, magnesium deficiency should be considered in people with unexplained low calcium and potassium. Low magnesium is rare in nondiabetic people who eat a good diet. I don’t recommend magnesium supplementation for low-risk people with no symptoms. Symptoms of low magnesium should be evaluated by a physician and not self-treated. Only those with diagnosed low magnesium should take a magnesium supplement. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PHOTOS News For Older Americans Four Ideas For Health Care Planning In Retirement (NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential longterm care options, such as unpaid care from family and less expensive available facilities.

Happy birthday, Charles Terhaar! Thank you for your service! I suppose I should say thank you, but...

3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses. 4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age. For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy.

Congrats to 9 year old Lorelei Goller of Fairport, 1st place, Faust’s USA Karate tournament supporting Golisano Children’s Hospital

You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash.

You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you’re getting kudos and other positive reactions to your suggestions, don’t let the cheers drown out some valid criticisms. Better to deal with them now than later. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Following your keen Bovine intuition pays off, as you not only reassess the suggestions some people are putting in front of you, but also their agendas for doing so. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You continue on a high-enthusiasm cycle as that new project you’ve assumed takes shape. You’re also buoyed by the anticipation of receiving some good news about a personal matter. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your eagerness to immerse yourself in your new assignment is understandable. But be careful that you don’t forget to take care of that pressing personal situation as well. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) This is a good time to learn a new skill that could give a clever Cat an edge in the upcoming competition for workplace opportunities. Enjoy the arts this weekend with someone special. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You could risk creating an impasse if you insist on expecting more from others than they’re prepared to give. Showing flexibility in what you’ll accept could prevent a stalemate. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you can weigh all factors of a dispute to find an agreeable solution for others, you might need the skilled input of someone you trust to help you deal with an ongoing situation of your own. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The good news is that your brief period of self-doubt turns into a positive “I can do anything” attitude. The better news is that you’ll soon be able to prove it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good time for Sagittarians to start making travel plans while you still can select from a wide menu of choices and deals, and not be forced to settle for leftovers. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Like your zodiacal sign, the sure-footed Goat, you won’t allow obstacles in your path to keep you from reaching your goal. Don’t be surprised by who asks to go along with you. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Let your head dominate your heart as you consider the risks that might be involved in agreeing to be a friend’s co-signer or otherwise act as his or her backup in a financial matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Prioritize: Resolve to close the door and let your voicemail take your phone calls while you finish up a task before the end-of-week deadline. Then go out and enjoy a fun-filled weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: Your capacity for care and compassion helps to bring comfort to others. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Pursapalooza Raises $14,000 for Wood Library

Submitted by Maria Bucci Edited by Amanda Dudek The third annual Pursapalooza fundraiser was held at Wood Library in Canandaigua on Friday, November 30, 2018. A Pursapalooza is exactly what it sounds like: an extravaganza of purses and, in this case, much more! This event featured a wide variety of donated, often designer, purses and costume jewelry to the delight of its guests. In fact, more shoppers than ever before enthusiastically lined up outside the library before the doors opened at 5PM, eager to snag a great deal on a designer purse or costume jewelry. In just a few short hours, this popular fundraiser netted over $14,000 for Wood Library’s life-enriching services for adults. What a tremendous success and a win for those we serve. The idea was the inspiration of Tina Manzer, a library trustee on the library committee. She was searching the internet for other organization’s fundraisers. The Genesee Women’s Foundation (women’s group in Rochester) does an event that is similar, but different in that it is a gala dinner and more like an auction. At Wood Library, everything is donated by the local community. It is curated by the library. These ladies really know their purses and jewelry, and they clean it all up for beautiful display. Tina Manzer, who chaired the event its first two years, has put a lot of energy into it. This year, she was in charge of the jewelry. She also was the one who thought to ask local artists to become involved in the auction piece that they do. This was new last year when artists were asked to paint on purses. They chose purses and designed them to be art pieces, statement pieces. This year, artists were asked to come up with custom jewelry boxes. Each piece was completely different and painted and beautiful. This year, the event was jointly chaired by a smaller group of about five people who have been involved since the beginning, breaking tasks and committees. “This was the most well-attended event that we have done,” Maria Bucci says. Since it is held at the library and everything is donated, there are fewer expenses associated with it. Also, many help make it happen. Library Director Jenny Goodemote expressed gratitude to everyone in the community “who donated literally hundreds of purses and bags full of jewelry. The support for this event is just tremendous. We could not pull off this event without the commitment of so many volunteers who gave up weekends and evenings to sort, price, and clean the purses and jewelry.” She also noted the special donations of gift certificates by area businesses which were paired with purses for a raffle. Many area businesses sponsored this exceptional fundraiser, as well. Such event sponsors included

Many others contributed to the success of the evening. Food and drinks were donated by Heron Hill Wine, Century Liquor & Wines, Thai by Night, Café Sol, Sweet Expressions, and Sinful Confections by Kathryn Casella. Local artists created one-of-a-kind jewelry boxes that were featured in a silent auction. The contributing local artists were Judi Cermak, Kate Money, Betsy Russell, Mark Stash, and Maya Van Orman. Together, the community and local businesses can be very proud of this annual event and its success. The proceeds of the event support programs at Wood Library, which is a full-service community library serving everyone who resides in the Canandaigua City School District. It is a registered 501(c) 3 charitable organization. Its mission is to provide exceptional public library service in a comfortable and safe environment where people can satisfy their curiosity, stimulate their imaginations, and connect to the local community and to the world. It is no more sensible to delay making funeral pre-arrangements than it is to deny the inevitability of death. By addressing in advance the practical matters surrounding death, you can spare your family unnecessary hardship. For this reason alone, everyone should discuss such matters ahead of time. Having an honest conversation with immediate family about death and funeral preparations need not be difficult. In fact, many experience a feeling of relief after this important topic is discussed. Death is a part of life, and funeral arrangements are as important and necessary as planning for other life-altering events. Pre-arranging your funeral makes it possible to take the necessary steps to ensure that your loved ones are spared needless concern. Can you imagine planning a wedding in just a few days? Why leave the ultimate celebration of your life to the last minute? Preneed funeral plans can be made at any time and offer many advantages. Funeral homes, cemeteries and other funeral service companies can help you preplan a funeral for yourself, your spouse, or a parent. If you would like to learn more about preplanning a funeral, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Death never takes the wise man by surprise, he is always ready to go.” Jean de La Fontaine

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
