A TRADITION OF CREMATION While increasing numbers of people are choosing cremation over earth burial for reasons of cost and expediency, some religious traditions mandate cremation out of philosophical belief. For instance, all Hindus, with the notable exceptions of holy men and children, are cremated. The belief is that holy men are supposed to have attained a high degree of detachment from their bodies, which allows them to pass on without remaining with their physical selves. Children are also regarded as having much less attachment to their bodies. For all others, cremation provides a distinct and complete means of detaching from the body and allowing the deceased to pass on. Accompanied by earnest prayer, cremation purifies the dead and leads them to a better and brighter life. Many individuals are now opting for cremation. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME’s professional and caring staff is here to assure that your requests are met. We understand the difficulties faced when making final arrangements. Contact us at (585) 346-5401 whenever you need us. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “The call of death is a call of love. Death can be sweet if we answer it in the affirmative, if we accept it as one of the great eternal forms of life and transformation.” – Herman Hesse

Our future programs and others to come depend on you, our public. This is why we are asking our Finger Lakes community to adopt Friendship House. Your support with donations will be greatly appreciated. Our sponsors are: Foodlink, Walmart, Wegman’s, and the Harvest Program. (FoodToDonate.com) We accept donations of gently used clothing, quality foods and checks and money orders to continue our support of the needy in our community. Spring comes early to George Eastman Museum with annual floral display The George Eastman Museum presents virtual springtime, with the annual Dutch Connection floral display, on view Friday, February 12, through Sunday, February 28. This colorful two-week display will feature thousands of flowering bulbs, displayed throughout the historic mansion. The two-week display is a welcome treat for the eyes and nose in the midst of winter. The museum’s historic Conservatory will be filled with thousands of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, amaryllis, and freesias, in various vibrant shades - the same colors Eastman featured 100 years ago. In addition, tropical orchids will be displayed throughout the Palm House and Colonnade, courtesy of the Genesee Region Orchid Society. Also on view on the second floor of the mansion are artifacts from George Eastman’s life in 1916. During his residency between 1905 and 1932, Eastman ordered tens of thousands of bulbs from Holland every year to decorate his Conservatory. The orders were mostly for tulips, narcissus, and hyacinths for indoor forcing, and tulips for the outside beds. Eastman’s annual bulb orders were inspired by a trip he made to Holland in 1890, when he was impressed by the tulip fields he saw while bicycling through the countryside. The present-day display is based on Eastman’s original orders placed with Dutch bulb companies. The cultivation process began last July, with six thousand bulbs growing since October. Bulb Sale Potted tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils will be sold during Dutch Connection, with all proceeds benefiting the George Eastman Museum. Group Tours The Eastman Museum offers private group tours of Dutch Connection during regular museum hours. To set up a tour or for more information,
Some of the many Dutch bulbs on display
please contact Stacey VanDenburgh, guest services manager, at (585) 271-3361 ext. 238 or tours@eastman.org. Dutch Connection is open during regular museum hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Included with regular museum admission. For more information, visit eastman.org or call (585) 271-3361. For the last 22 years, Dutch Connection has been made possible by the generous support of Gerald P. and Karen S. Kral. Greenhouse services have been provided by Lucas Greenhouses.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Healthy Bodies Don’t Need Supplements DEAR DR. ROACH: After viewing an infomercial that praised the benefits of probiotics, I would like to know what you think. Probiotics have been prescribed when one is taking antibiotics to replenish the good bacteria that is lost. When taking no medication, I found that when I took one capsule (30 billion live cultures per capsule/10 probiotic strains) on a daily basis, I would get gas and diarrhea; therefore, I stopped taking them. I thought that this was the exact opposite reaction that should have occurred. Please write about the pros and cons and the reasons/necessity for taking probiotics on a daily basis. -- D.A.M. ANSWER: Probiotics are microorganisms, usually bacteria or yeast, that have beneficial properties. There is at least some evidence to support the use of probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), colon inflammation from radiation, irritable bowel syndrome and other diseases of the GI tract. However, with a few exceptions, there is very little evidence that taking anything (prescription or supplement) is of benefit to people who are healthy with no symptoms. Probiotics haven’t been shown to benefit healthy people. Any treatment can have side effects. While there may be some benefits, such as preventing antibioticsassociated diarrhea, I hesitate before recommending any treatment to a healthy, asymptomatic person. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Does high blood pressure cause irregular or abnormal heart rhythms? -- P.K.S. ANSWER: Not usually. In some people with very longstanding high blood pressure, the heart can become dilated -- blown up like a balloon to much more than its normal size. When the heart, particularly the atria (the top chambers), becomes dilated like that, it makes atrial fibrillation more likely. High blood pressure is very common. Irregular heartbeats are universal -- we all have some every day. It is human nature to associate one problem with another, since they are both related to the heart. However, it’s more likely that the everyday irregularities you may have had without noticing take on new significance with a diagnosis of high blood pressure. That being said, since it is possible they are related, it’s certainly worth an EKG next time you see your internist or cardiologist to make sure you don’t have a dangerous heart rhythm. Sometimes doctors order 24-hour (or longer) EKGs for use at home, which can be correlated with any symptoms of heart irregularities. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart-rhythm disturbances in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6. Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have lower-back ache and have been seeing a chiropractor, which helps a little. Would yoga help? -- A. ANSWER: Yoga does help many people with back pain, but it’s important to find an instructor with experience with beginners and in using yoga specifically for back pain. Similarly, tai chi and Pilates exercises have been shown to be useful treatments for back pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Thanks to two Geneseo Walmart Shoppers for helping me when I dislocated my shoulder while checking out at Walmart. You both kept me calm even when I was in so much pain until my husband and the ambulance got to me. Thank you again for helping me.
happened to me before. I was totally shocked. Thank you so much for making our day. I was so flabbergasted that I did not think to pay for the person behind me. However, I will be paying this forward at my next Dunkin Donut stop. You are such a nice person!
Pay It Forward! Thanks to the man at Brockport Aldi’s who offered me his cart in the parking lot and wouldn’t accept the quarter. It made my day! Even small acts of kindness or a smile can make a big difference and brighten someone’s day. p.s. I left the cart unlocked for someone else to use after I was done shopping.
Just wanted to say thank you so much for the care and compassion Dr. Gshrey and his staff gave my dog Nikki and me. Even though it was such a difficult time and a terrible thing to go through, it was made a little easier by such caring people. Thank you for being there for us.
Thank you so very much to the person at the Lakeville Dunkin Donuts on Weds., 1/20, at approx. 7:10 am. I pulled up to the window to pay for my hot chocolate and my wife’s coffee. I was told it was paid for. This has never

“Happy Holiday” (sometimes performed as “Happy Holidays”) is a popular song composed by Irving Berlin during 1941 and published the following year ... LONG before all this political correctness started! It was introduced by Bing Crosby in the 1942 film “Holiday Inn.” Commonly regarded as a Christmas song, it was performed on New Year’s Eve in the film and expressed a wish for the listener to enjoy “happy holidays” throughout the entire year. The song helped to popularize the phrase “Happy holidays” as a common greeting during the Christmas and holiday season in the United States. I used to look forward to my husband belting out “Happy Holidays” (the only 2 words he would sing) in his deep voice every year until he passed in 2012. BTW, I also say Merry Christmas!

I live in a very nice neighborhood, many professionals, families, and retirees. Unfortunately, on trash day when there are high winds forecast (there are four different trash companies servicing the neighborhood, each with a different pick-up day) many residents just place the recyclables on the curb the night before. Due to the prevailing winds, the blowing trash that does not get caught on neighbors’ fences ends up at the entrance of the neighborhood, creating a ‘royal’ mess. Please, if you must put the trash out early, secure it; put the heavy glass on top or find another solution. Please be environmentally responsible and stop making the neighborhood the town dump.
To the coyote hunters who use dogs and drive white trucks: I know your dogs can’t read a posted sign. But that does not give you the right to disobey the signs unless you don’t care. I know it is cheaper to pay fines then it is to own your own land. If I catch you on my land I will have you arrested.

Scrapbooks can help document your year Many interesting and special events take place during the course of a typical year. While the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Rather than relegate birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and other such yearly events to the black hole of cyberspace, crafty men, women and children may want to display them in more prominent ways. Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can help people document various events over the course of the year. But scrapbooking can be much more than that as well. Scrapbooks can serve as valuable resources that speak to the way life once was. Such traditions are not new. Books highlighting family memorabilia, such as recipes, poems, letters, and illustrations, were popular in England as early as the 15th century. Even school yearbooks are a type of scrapbook, highlighting students and events in a single convenient book. The reasons for scrapbooking are the same today as they once were. Scrapbooks preserve memories, record family stories and pass down information through generations. Scrapbooks can even be customized in any manner their creators desire. For those who have resolved to devote more time to documenting happy times and special events in the year ahead, scrapbooking is a great way to do just that. Here’s how to make the process creative and successful. • Devote a box to “scraps.” At the beginning of the year, set aside a medium-sized box, such as a shoebox, that can store various items you want to include in your scrapbook. These may include ticket stubs, receipts, brochures from trips, or any other items you deem worth saving.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Feb. 18, 1885, Mark Twain publishes his famous -- and controversial -- novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” Its satirical look at racism, religion and other social attitudes of the time led libraries to ban the book. Seniors need not abandon their love of sport just because Father Time is catching up w ith them. M any sports can be enjoyed by athletes of all ages.

Showcase the special memories of the year ahead by starting a scrapbook.
• Make time to scrapbook. Set aside a few days each month to go through collected items and organize them so you have an idea of what will be included on your pages. Every event may not make the final cut, but that’s up to you. • Indulge in some craft-store shopping. Not everyone has the time to design each scrapbook page from scratch. Fortunately, there are numerous pre-designed templates or slip-in pages that require little work on the part of scrapbookers. • Use your own handwriting. Handwritten sentiments can make the scrapbook even more meaningful. • Don’t overload with photos. Let one or two photos on a page best convey the emotions and stories. Create balance with white space, text and other accents. • Categorize your photos. Disorganized photos can make scrapbook creation more challenging and ultimately frustrating. Organize your photos by month and rely on cloud-based photo storage systems to keep them safe. Then, when you need them, you can print only those images you want to include in your book. • Have fun with the process. You have the entire year to create a beautiful scrapbook. Take your time and experiment with different ideas.

GREEN WAYS TO CLEAN UP SNOW Although residents of chilly climates come to expect the flakes and gathering snow mounds, some people never quite get used to the cleanup involved in keeping neighborhoods safe and accessible. In M arch 2014, North America w as covered by the third-highest amount of snow that late in the season since record keeping began in 1966, according to NOAA’s U.S. National Ice Center. Snow can begin in September and October in some northern areas and stretch on until early spring. It pays to learn the best w ays to deal w ith snow and to incorporate some environmentally friendly strategies as w ell. The most eco-friendly w ay to remove snow is to w ait until the spring thaw w hen it’ll melt. Unfortunately that is not practical for most people. Therefore homeow ners and business ow ners need to look to other methods to clear drivew ays, parking lots and sidew alks of the w hite stuff. HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Check for leaks and plug any you find. Homes may develop air leaks over time, and such leaks allow air to infiltrate the home. W hen that occurs, homeow ners instinctively turn up the thermostat in w inter to combat the cold air getting in. Come summertime, those same homeow ners w ill run their air conditioners on a higher setting in an effort to stay comfortable w hen hot air is creeping through the cracks. Rather than adjusting the temperature inside, fix any sources of air infiltration you find. Run your hand along doorw ays and w indow s to determine if any drafts are coming through. Older homes may also develop cracks in bricks, around the foundation and in siding or stucco. Seal any areas w here you feel air infiltrating your home, w hich w ill save money, reduce your energy consumption and make your older home more efficient.

W HEN IT COM ES TO W INTER ROOF CHECKUPS, THE ATTIC IS YOUR FRIEND You know you’re supposed to do it tw ice a year. But w hat homeow ner relishes the thought of climbing a ladder to check the health of his roof -- as key to a home’s energy efficiency as that roof might be -w hen the w eather is turning sharply colder outside? Well, as it turns out, w hile even a quic k, eyeball roof-c hec k is recommended this time of year, there’s a fallback option. You could just check your attic instead. “ Roofs ac tually c reate an insulated barrier that helps trap heat inside, and most attic spaces are located right below them,” explains Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advanc ement of Roofing Excellence. “ That makes them perfect for spotting potential problem areas and damage w ithout w orrying about falling.”

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger. Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.
