Growing up in 1940’s Honeoye Falls by Tom Sargeant – with commentary from brother, Bob Sargeant (italics)
W
e lived at 43 North Main Street in Honeoye Falls. The house is still there. Next door lived an old man who on the 4th of July would bring out a portable crate with his rocket launcher on it. He could send a portable rocket across the street and over the American Legion Hall. There were no fireworks allowed (or available) after 1941. In 1942, after World War II started, we began working for the local farmers who would send a truck by to pick us up and take us to the field where we would be working. My first job was for the Moses Nursery in Lima, NY. We picked up gladiola bulbs, and he paid us $.45 an hour. We picked up potatoes and picked up and shucked corn. We were paid 10 cents per bushel. For a full day’s work on Saturday, you could make $5.00. We picked corn for K.C. Livermore, large potatoes for Chauney VanVoorhis, and at the Harwood Martin farm, we had to detassel four rows of corn and leave the tassels on two. The farmers always paid us at day’s end in cash. The Birds-Eye Snyder Factory in Avon, NY hired a team of ten of us from the high school. They also hired the school coach, Lou Basil, to be our leader. We got this work because the parent of one of the students was the Vice-President at Birds-Eye. Our principal had a Victory (produce) Garden. My brothers and a few other kids worked there. We weeded onions and carrots. My oldest brother and I and the other big kids were paid 30 cents an hour. My brother, Bob, who was a bit smaller but worked just as hard, was paid 25 cents an hour.
There were a few stations available but not 24-hour programming like we have today. Listening to the radio was a daily ritual, especially at dinnertime – Jack Armstrong (The AllAmerican Boy), Captain Midnight (send a box top in for the secret code ring), Terry and the Pirates, the Green Hornet, and Gang Buster and Inner Sanctum (What mystery lies behind the squeaky door?). We went to an air show at the Woodward Airport, a private family-owned airport owned by the owners of the Jell-O factory Tom Sargeant & his father. in LeRoy. The Circular Hill Road jalopy races were also held near LeRoy. This was a natural amphitheater – people sat on the grassy hillside. Summer days were spent down at the creek swimming, turning rocks over for bait and sometimes fishing. In the woods behind the house, we had a rope swing in a walnut tree. On a rainy day, we would make a dam in the culvert in front of the house. Evenings, we might get enough kids together to play softball, tag or capture the flag in the park downtown. Winter days [were spent] ice skating on the creek, skiing down a hill or in the street. Maplewood Avenue was a side street and nice hill to use our sleds on. I remember once skating on the road surface as black ice made it possible. Brother Bob and I also put the chairs up for the Saturday night band concert at Harry Allen Park. Uncle Alex would give us each 50 cents. We would go to the movies for 18 cents and buy a soda after the movie for 15 cents. Then, we would go back, put the chairs away, turn out the lights and lock the door.
Tom Sargeant at 80-years-old standing beside the same cart he and his father used
In the year 1942, after the war started, I collected one ton of scrap iron from Honeoye Creek. I received a “V” for Victory with the number 42 on it from my school. My mother sewed it on a sweater for me. We also collected cardboard and newspapers and sold them to the scrap men for three cents per pound. We collected milkweed pods. The filmy matter was used in life vests and jackets to keep flight crews and Navy men afloat. When I was 9 years old, my father taught me to weld. In 1946, my father was contracted to modify water tanks in a number of schools in Western New York. On our first day, after we finished the work, we returned home by way of Dansville Hill. My father was worried about getting down. We had an old International pickup truck with mechanical breaks. We started down the hill. Dad shut the engine off and put the truck in low gear. By the time we got to the bottom, we were going 50 mile per hour. Wow! Whew!
In a barn on our property, my dad repaired farm equipment and made plow points for farms. We used that barn for a carnival we put on one time. There was a haunted house, costume show and games. Many kids came. Some kids later told me that they were disappointed we only did it once. The house at 43 North Main Street and the barn were great – the greatest – places to be during those years. Note by D. E. Bentley, Editor of Owl Light News: Tom Sargeant (b. May 20, 1933) and his family, including his brother Bob Sargeant (b. August 2, 1934), grew up in Honeoye Falls, NY. (Article in greater length originally published by Owl Light News on August 11, 2017).

585-394-4670 ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That lower-thanacceptable performance you’re getting from others in your group might be the result of miscommunication. If so, correct it before serious problems arise later on. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected situation could call for a change of plans. If so, you might feel that this is unfair. But it’s best to make the needed adjustments now. There’ll be time later for rescheduling. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The new year brings opportunities you might want to look into. Some might be more interesting than others. But take time to look at all of them before you make any decisions. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good idea to be careful about expenses until you’ve worked out that pesky financial problem. You might find it advisable to get some solid advice on how to proceed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance looms large over the Leonine aspect. Single Lions looking for love should find Cupid very cooperative. Paired Cats can expect a renewed closeness in their relationships. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Making contact with a former colleague might not be high on your list of priorities. But it could pay off personally as well as professionally. Avoid bringing up any negatives about the past. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A personal relationship could face added stress because of a situation involving someone close to both of you. Be supportive and, above all, try to avoid playing the blame game. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might well find some lingering uncertainties about a decision. If so, take that as a warning that you might not be ready to make that move yet. More study would be in order. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Music is a dominant theme for Sagittarians right now, and it should remind you to make a greater effort to restore some much-needed harmony in that very special relationship. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although family matters might demand much of the Sea Goat’s attention this week, you’ll want to try to make time to handle those all-important workplace situations as well. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recurring unresolved issue might need to be revisited before you can move forward. Consider asking someone familiar with the situation to act as an impartial counselor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Ignore pressure to make a decision. Keeping your options open is still the wisest course, at least until you’re sure you’ve learned all you need to know about the matter at hand. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re capable of great loyalty to those around you, which is one reason you can count on devotion from friends and family.
Smokey.
Hello, I'm I was adopted almost 8 years ago, when I was 8 weeks old. I am a mixed breed cat. I am a real sassy-pants in all ways. I don't really enjoy being picked up or cuddled. If someone picks me up or I feel like getting into trouble, my pupils increase in size so much there is only a very thin ring of my actual eye color (yellow). Although I do enjoy gentle headbutts. My favorite pastime is napping, and I LOVE cat treats! :) Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Resolve to be a better parent Parenting is a challenging, yet rewarding role that many adults take on lovingly. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that there were 73.7 million children under age 18 living in families in 2016. Canadian Census results found roughly 5.8 million children living in private households with parents in 2016, the most recent year for data. Parenting is a hard job that evolves as children age, and moms and dads may wonder if there is anything they can do to be better parents. Raising successful, happy and well-rounded children takes effort, and the following tips may help parents along the way.
Take care of yourself
It’s hard for parents to serve as good role models for their children if they aren’t taking care of themselves. A little self-reflection and some positive changes can help parents set strong examples for their youngsters.
Beware of comparisons
Parents often wonder what they may be doing wrong, especially when they see other children meeting milestones that their children may not be achieving. According to Harvey Karp, MD, author of “The Happiest Toddler,” babies develop rapidly and each child is unique. One set of abilities is bound to develop faster than another, Karp says. Making comparisons between children, whether it’s with youngsters’ siblings or friends, can be a recipe for conflict and self-doubt. Speak with a pediatrician if you have concerns about development.
Be an active listener
Being an attentive parent includes listening to youngsters. Encourage kids to share their points of view on activities or topics they feel are important. That can reassure children they know they can come to you without fear of reprisal, even when they may have been out of line. This strengthens the bond between parents and their children.
Explain you are human, too
Sometimes children need to see that their parents are not perfect to realize they needn’t be perfect either. The website Aha Parenting! recommends parents apologize when they are wrong and use such instances to teach kids that adults are human, too. These are just a few of the many steps parents can take to form strong bonds with their children and be the best parents possible.

Doctors Disagree on Blood Pressure Target
New Patient Special

FREE Comprehensive Dental Examination & Diagnostic X-Rays with every new patient hygiene cleaning.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 91-year-old male. When I switched primary care physicians, my new doctor shook his head because my previous doctor had never told me about my low GFR readings and being borderline diabetic. In the past I had assumed that if the doctor didn’t mention any low or high blood test results, everything must be OK. I no longer assume: I ask for a copy of the results and question them. The new doctor referred me to a nephrologist. My blood pressure at the time was usually in the 130-140/60-70 range. He told me that for a person of my age, that was too low. He gave me a target of 159/89. Then on my next visit to primary care, I was told that my blood pressure was too high; I was prescribed losartan. I am testing my blood pressure daily, and the past few days it has been in the 170s. So, what is a good target for my blood pressure? Which doctor is correct? -- A.L. ANSWER: There is no absolute right answer to your question. On the one hand, overaggressive treatment of blood pressure in a 91-year-old is unnecessary and may lead to symptoms of lightheadedness, especially upon standing. Other blood pressure drugs may have additional side effects. On the other hand, a 91-year-old has a higher risk for heart disease and stroke, and in someone with a low GFR reading (a measurement of kidney function) and borderline diabetes (which further increases the risk of heart attack and stroke), most experts would aim for a blood pressure goal that is closer to 120-130/80-85, as long as it isn’t causing annoying symptoms. I’m not clear why the doctor wasn’t happy with your usual blood pressure, since a level of 130-140/60s seems very reasonable for a man your age if you aren’t having side effects. If 170 is the usual systolic pressure on your new regimen, I would ask about going back to the old one.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have had small breasts. Suddenly, in my mid-70s, my breasts grew, and now at 80 I have outgrown most of my clothes. My doctor said that it is fat, but I have gained only a few pounds. Could this be hormonal? Have you addressed this issue before? -- S.F. ANSWER: I haven’t addressed this before. Breasts change size during a woman’s life for many reasons. Breast tissue is a mixture of fat and glandular tissue. For young women, there’s proportionally more glandular tissue, the amount of which tends to decrease over time. After menopause, the breasts become less glandular; what is lost is replaced by fat, as there is less estrogen. About 20% of women will notice significantly larger breasts after menopause; however, this usually occurs along with overall weight gain. Significant breast enlargement without much weight gain is not common in my experience. Hopefully, your doctor did a thorough examination. However, I think it is very unlikely that your breast size changes represent a tumor. Very rarely, there are estrogen-producing tumors, so if there were other reasons to be concerned, your doctor might check blood levels of hormones, including estrogen. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 12, 1932, Ophelia Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas becomes the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Caraway had been appointed earlier to fill the vacancy left by her late husband, Thaddeus Horatio Caraway. * On Jan. 11, 1949, on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C., the cornerstone is laid at the first mosque of note in the United States. The Islamic Center was complete with a 160-foot minaret from which prayers were to be announced.
Both Men And Women Resolve To Tackle Disorganization In 2020; Women Report Feeling More Stressed By Its Effects (NAPS)—If you’re ever determined to finally streamline your office “to do’s” and make a dent in your inbox, or committed to finding a way to keep the kids’ toys out of the way of unwary feet, you’re not alone. A recent national survey of more than 1,200 individuals conducted by the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) for its annual Get Organized & Be Productive campaign revealed that a full 31 percent of respondents are putting “getting organized” on their list of New Year’s resolutions. While the data shows both genders on board with this idea, it also showed that for women, the ramifications may be more significant.
* On Jan. 10, 2008, Tata Motors in India debuts the Nano, billing it as the world's cheapest car. The bubble-shaped mini-vehicle had a base price of $2,000. It had a body made of plastic and sheet metal -- and one windshield wiper.
GO Month evolved as recognition that many view the fresh start implied by a new year as the time to finally tackle the disorganization in their lives—at home and on the job. The survey was designed to probe how feelings of disorganization impact men and women. “People have different levels of tolerance for disorganization in their lives, and what is acceptable for one person may be intolerable for another,” NAPO Executive Director Jennifer Pastore Monroy, CAE observed. “This was particularly true for women.” What The Survey Showed While half of all respondents said that when they feel disorganized, they find it hard to concentrate on current projects, more female respondents reported feeling stressed from feeling out of control of their environment than did men. Specifically: • Thirty-six percent of women said that looking at how organized or disorganized their home is, they feel stressed or completely stressed compared to only 22 percent of men. • More than half of women respondents (53.7 percent) report disorganization leaves them unable to concentrate on the work at hand, vs only 45 percent of men. • 35.5 percent of women vs 22 percent of men wished at some time for someone to come in and organize their home. Monroy’s advice to help streamline one’s environment? “Don’t wait until you feel out of control to tackle the stressors in your life. Having a professional organizer or productivity expert to help look at things with fresh eyes can encourage new day-to-day behaviors to create the needed change, whether you are a man or a woman.” Learn More For further facts and tips, visit www.napo.net. family came to our aid and a woman from a nearby house. We are so grateful for their assistance. We cannot thank you both enough. It’s wonderful to know there are good, kind people to help where and when you need them! On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I were at the Seneca Park Zoo and were caught in a snow squall while walking to our car. My husband took a tumble, and being seniors, this is always worrisome. He was unable to get up and had a cut on his head. A young man with his “You have voided the title,” she said with a gleam in her eye. By checking the wrong box on the backside of my son’s title, I inadvertently voided the entire document. My fault, but the consequence is a ten day wait on new documentation and $20. Thank you very much, DMV. My husband and I plant pots of annuals to beautify a little piece of highway along the lake along with his extensive gardens that he keeps expanding every year. We planted the pots around Memorial Day and just as they started flourishing around the end of June or early July all four of them disappeared! This is not the first time some pots have been missing, but all four? What a sad state of affairs! I cannot believe that you could bring these to your home, and no GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

out their faces. I have also had people tell me they shot a deer with a deer slug. Then, when they skinned it, it had buckshot or bird shot in the hide. Another friend got a buck. He had to throw the meat out when he skinned it because there was a rotten spot from the neck to the front leg. It was 7pm, and I was washing dishes. I looked across the road and saw a spotlight going into my horse pasture. The light was coming from a car. He backed up to look more. When he saw me come out, he sped off. not to jump up and to stop chasing the cats someday. You also shot Henry, a Husky mix who probably initiated the escape from our fenced-in back yard. After dark, Henry limped home, collapsing in the road. Our kids came screaming. We scooped him up, and the battle to save Henry’s life began. His wounds looked like a gunshot, (through and through) later confirmed by the vet. Yes, 6 children got to see what a deer slug does to a dog and will forever imagine a beloved family pet dying out there, never to be found. Henry died despite our valiant effort. FYI, it’s illegal to shoot a dog, except in self-defense. Somebody knows something. Please call the Sheriff with information on our two dogs shot and killed in [local town].

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson If you can’t paint your dorm or rental apartment walls, here’s some ways to dress up your decor: Try removable stickers from home decor stores or online. Also you can hang a tapestry. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, and if the material is light enough, you can use removable hooks, like Command strips. Or, try creating a pattern with washi tape, which also is removable.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.
