RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Women with a family history of breast cancer in a first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) have an increased risk of breast cancer. Women who have inherited changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes or in certain other genes have a higher risk of breast cancer. The risk of breast cancer caused by inherited gene changes depends on the type of gene mutation, family history of cancer, and other factors.

Burdell Durant Geartz “Buzz” September 26, 2019 Canadice: On September 26, 2019, at age 91, Buzz passed peacefully at his home on Honeoye Lake. Predeceased by his parents William & Ida (Donner) Geartz and seven siblings. Survived by his wife of 69 years Mary Ann (Estony) Geartz; children, Gerrett (Melinda) Geartz and Nancy (Barry) Nagel all of Canadice; grandchildren, Jennie (Michael) Ott, Tyler (Kala Stein) Nagel, Taber Geartz, Elisabeth (Robb) Delisanti, Caitlin (Michael) Conklin, Jared Nagel, Todd ( Jennifer) Geartz, Catherine ( Joel) West, and Jordan Nagel; 10 greatgrandchildren; many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Born in 1928 at the family farm in Ransomville, NY, Buzz was the youngest of eight children. From a young age Buzz was taught the core values of Faith, Family, and Hard Work; principles he lived by throughout his life and would impart on generations to follow. In 1946 at the age of 17 Buzz enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served until 1948 and later in the Korean War for two years. During this time he married Mary Ann, his high school sweetheart and love of his life. Buzz was a dedicated husband and father. He prided himself on being a provider for his family. Always an extremely hard working individual Buzz had many jobs, sometimes three at a time to support his wife and family. He worked at the farm, local factories, dry cleaning deliveries, as a Bardahl Oil salesman and finally as an ironworker where his skills matched the requirements of the trade. His passion and strength in leading others enabled him to quickly move through the ranks. In 1963 Buzz started Tri-Steel Construction and grew it into the largest reinforcing steel contractor in Western New York. Many people do not know that Buzz was also a gifted auctioneer, a skill learned from his father who did household auctions in the Wilson, NY area. At one time the auctioneering business was growing so fast that he had to make a decision on which business to continue. Buzz loved sports, boating, gardening and most of all his grandchildren. In his retirement years many Honeoye residents would see Buzz teaching his grandkids the value of hard work at Honeoye Commons, where he maintained the landscaping and utilized them as his crew. Buzz called many places home over his lifetime - Ransomville, Newfane, Pittsford, Honeoye and Marco Island. He loved Honeoye and the many friendships he cultivated. He was active with the Honeoye Lake Rotary and hosted Camp Honeoye for many years. He was an engaged member of the Marco Island Lutheran church and never missed an opportunity to volunteer and share his faith with others. He was blessed to be surrounded in his final year by wonderful caregivers who offered unparalleled love and support for both Buzz and his entire family. Family and friends called on Tuesday, October 1st, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 8624 Main Street, Rte 20A, Honeoye, NY. Buzz’s Funeral Mass was held at 10:30am on Wednesday, October 2nd, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 8961 Main Street, Rte 20A, Honeoye, NY. Burial, with US Marine Corps Honors, followed at Richmond Center Cemetery, Honeoye. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Honeoye Lake Rotary Club, PO Box 674, Honeoye, NY 14471 or the Richmond Fire Dept. & Ambulance, PO Box 469, Honeoye, NY 14471. Breast cancer signs and symptoms Breast cancer is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 627,000 women lost their lives to breast cancer in 2018. But women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer, as the WHO notes early detection is critical and could potentially save thousands of lives each year. A proactive approach is a key component of protecting oneself against breast cancer. Many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional cancer screenings, but women can keep an eye out for certain signs of breast cancer they might be able to detect on their own. Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs and symptoms and are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately.

• Changes in how the breast or nipple feels: Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous.
CAKES
• Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one side only; and a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs and symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician. • Discharge from the nipple: Any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. A milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician. Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 4, 1918, German Chancellor Max von Baden sends a telegraph message to President Woodrow Wilson requesting an armistice between Germany and the Allied powers in World War I. After a difficult month of negotiations, World War I came to an end on Nov. 11, 1918. * On Oct. 6, 1961, President John F. Kennedy advises American families to build bomb shelters to protect themselves from atomic fallout in the event of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. One year later, the world hovered on the brink of nuclear war after the USSR placed nuclear missiles in Cuba. * On Oct. 5, 1978, Isaac Bashevis Singer wins the Nobel Prize for literature. Singer wrote about Jewish life in Poland and the United States. One of his stories, “Yentl,” was made into a movie directed by and starring Barbra Streisand in 1983.
Pros and cons of joint replacement surgery To people outside the medical field, joint replacement surgery might sound like a solution that’s considered only after all other options have been exhausted. But joint replacement surgery has become very common, even though some studies have suggested certain procedures are being performed unnecessarily. A 2014 study published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology found that one-third of patients who undergo knee replacement surgery may not be appropriate candidates for the procedure because their symptoms are not severe enough to merit aggressive intervention like surgery. The decision to undergo surgery is always a patient’s to make. Weighing some pros and cons of joint replacement surgery can help patients make the most informed decisions possible. Pros - The Cleveland Clinic notes that many patients who have undergone joint replacement surgeries have experienced dramatic improvement within a relatively short time after undergoing the surgery. Much of that improvement is related to pain, which for many people becomes overwhelming prior to surgery. Another benefit to joint replacement surgery is the recovery time. For example, the Cleveland Clinic notes that patients who have knee replacement surgery are usually standing and even moving the joint the day after their surgeries. Within six weeks, those same patients are typically walking comfortably with very little support. While each patient is different, any fears that joint replacement surgery will require patients to be immobile for months after surgery are unwarranted. Joint replacement surgery also can be a long-term solution, whereas the alternatives might not be. The Cleveland Clinic says that roughly 85 percent of knee implants will last 20 years, and that life expectancy figures will grow as technology advances. Cons - As beneficial as joint replacement surgery can be, it’s not without downsides. Cost is one such disadvantage. How much a patient pays for the surgery depends on his or her coverage, but AARP notes that the average knee replacement surgery costs $31,000. Such costs can be prohibitive for aging men and women who are no longer working. Another potential disadvantage to going under the knife, especially for those who are borderline candidates for replacement surgeries, is the likelihood that surgery won’t have a significant impact on quality of life. A 2017 study published in the journal BMJ found that knee replacement had minimal effects on quality of life, especially for patients whose arthritis was not severe. Joint replacement surgeries are common. When deciding if surgery is their best option, patients should consider the pros and cons of going under the knife before making their final choice.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A changing situation calls for a change in plans. Although you might prefer the schedule you had already worked up, you could do better by agreeing to make the needed adjustments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That once seemingly rock-solid proposition you favored might be hiding some serious flaws. Take time to check it more carefully and question anything that seems out of kilter. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Finish up those lingering tasks so that you can then arrange to spend some time in quiet reflection. This will go a long way in restoring both your physical and spiritual energies. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A family situation could heat up and boil over unless you deal with it as soon as possible. Try to persuade other family members to work with you to help cool things down. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Cheer up, Kitty Cat! That low feeling will begin to ebb by midweek, and you should be back in the social swirl in time for the weekend. A longpostponed deal could be starting up again. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Going too fast and too far on too little knowledge could be risky. Best to slow down and check for any gaps in your information. It’s what you don’t know that could hurt you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to make peace among quarreling family members, friends or colleagues can be tough. Expect some resistance, maybe even some expressions of resentment. But stay with it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Changing your mind doesn’t have to be a problem once you realize that you might have good and sufficient cause to do so. Make your explanations clear and complete. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unkept promise can be irksome and easily raise the Archer’s ire. But instead of getting into a confrontation, take time to check why someone you relied on came up short. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A new workplace distraction creates an unnecessary delay. The sooner you deal with it, the better for all concerned. A personal matter also should be attended to as soon as possible. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Once again, the Aquarian’s gift for applying both practical and creative methods to resolve a situation makes all the difference. Personal relationships thrive during the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A relationship appears to be losing its oncestrong appeal for reasons that might be different from what you think. An open and honest talk could lead to some surprising revelations. BORN THIS WEEK: Your life is bound by your belief that character counts more than anything else.

Author Honors Dansville’s Rich WWII History in Locally Printed Book By Amanda Dudek
W
WII: it touched the lives of families all across the United States, including those in Dansville, New York. Dansville Area Historical Society Museum Curator David Gilbert hopes to connect readers to WWII history and its impact on everyday life in his latest book, Dansville War Diary: A Chronicle of Dansville, New York During World War II. Dansville War Diary follows each month of WWII through the eyes of a hypothetical Dansville diarist and includes a paragraph of global WWII events before focusing on coinciding events in Dansville specifically. “These people lived lives that none of us today can relate to very much,” explained Gilbert. “Imagine if you were told you cannot go out and buy particular things today,” he added, referring to shortages and rationings. “In December of 1942, a year into the war, there was a whole list of things people could no longer get,” said Gilbert. “Things made from metal were being diverted for items like tanks and planes. Tires were even harder to come by because all of the islands where rubber came from were held David Gilbert with his latest book, Dansville War by the Japanese. Diary: A Chronicle of Dansville, New York During Extra tires had to World War II be turned in to be diverted for things like planes and jeeps. Automobile production stopped cold. You could not go and buy a new car for four years.” Food items were restricted. “You might get half a pound of coffee a month and a bag of sugar,” said Gilbert. “That doesn’t go far if you are baking or want sugar in your coffee. Canned fruits, vegetables and juices were sent to the troops. Meat and butter were restricted. Substitutes like margarine, cottage cheese and macaroni and cheese gained popularity.” The economy was impacted, too. “Foster Wheeler had something going on every hour of every day,” explained Gilbert. “About 1,500 people worked there making boilers for naval vessels. Dansville’s airfield also became very important for training pilots during the war, expanding its runways to accommodate the planes.” Volunteerism was at an all-time high. “People worked at the Red Cross putting together bandages and knitted material for soldiers and war refugees. It had around 1,000 members, more than ever before or since. People devoted their entire lives to getting the war over as soon as possible and getting their loved ones back.” Dansville’s most valuable contribution to the war effort was its soldiers. “Hundreds of people enlisted,” Gilbert stated. “There was an honor roll in the middle of Main Street, and they would put the names of every person who was in the service on that roll. By the end of the war, there were over 800 names. Dansville’s population was only about 5,000; that is a huge portion. Virtually every family in Dansville had a loved one in the war.” Local soldiers who lost their lives in WWII are respectfully listed. “I was inspired by a documentary on WWII by Ken Burns,” said Gilbert. “In it, Burns focused on three or four places in the United States and told the story of the war through those places and how the war affected them specifically. I wanted to do the same for Dansville. I

wanted people to know what Dansville was like then and what it was like to lose someone in the war.” Gilbert was also inspired by personal connections to WWII. “A woman who sings in the choir at my church was among the first females enlisted in the Marines,” he declared. “My mother, who was 5-years-old when the war started, remembers picking milkweed pods in her backyard. The pods were used to stuff life preservers.” So, Gilbert began scouring the two weekly newspapers which had been active in Dansville throughout WWII. “That’s over 400 newspaper issues!” he exclaimed. “I included things like newspaper articles, notices, letters from soldiers, the Foster Wheeler newsletter and photos.” “Collecting photographs wasn’t as easy as I had hoped,” recalled Gilbert. “Film was among the many shortages of the war. The Dansville Area Historical Society (DAHS) and I had to scrounge for photos, including those of women working at Foster Wheeler - our local ‘Rosy the Riveters’ - and our cover photo of a scrap drive.” The DAHS then brought Gilbert’s manuscript to Penny Lane Printing in Avon. “Penny Lane had done a successful reprint on another book for us, so we approached them with this new book,” said Gerri Waight, DAHS President. “They did a wonderful job putting it together and designing the cover for us.” Gilbert agreed, adding: “When I saw a proof copy of the cover, I was just blown away. That’s outstanding.” Gilbert hinted that he may have several other historical projects in the works, many involving Dansville. For more info, visit www.dansvilleareahistoricalsociety.wordpress.com. LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE Peak viewing times Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather.com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.

SEPTIC TANK PUMPING
DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson “My daughter is a softball player, and here’s what her coach suggested as an ice pack for when she gets home: unpopped popcorn kernels. They get cold but not uncomfortably so, they can easily mold to any body part and they don’t melt into a mess. If you needed to, you can empty them out into a pan and stick your hand or foot into it. Be sure to label them so you don’t try to pop them later!” -- L.D. in Georgia

585-802-1544 STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver It may be hard to believe, but there is an official competition to see who can sit in a sauna for the longest period of time. The World Sauna Championships have taken place in Heinola, Finland, annually since 1999. The starting temperature is 110 F, and a liter of water is poured on the stove every 30 seconds. The winner is the last person who is able to leave the sauna without assistance. Competitors participate at their own risk, and they are required to sign a waiver agreeing not to take legal action against the event organizers.

neighbor. While I am not able to pay you for your generosity, I do believe the Lord will bless you for your kindness.
All season, my neighbor has selflessly mowed the lawn at the home I rent. I am a single mom with two small children, and I also work full-time, so it is hard for me to find the time to mow the lawn while keeping an eye on my little ones. I couldn’t ask for a more thoughtful, caring We have a neighbor that goes out almost every Friday and/or Saturday night leaving their dogs to bark nonstop for hours. The dogs are obviously barking out of separation anxiety, and we have previously contacted the neighbors to no avail. You would think they would care that their dogs are in distress when they are not home, not to mention we can’t even open our windows on a beautiful summer night. Please be responsible dog owners and care for not only your neighbors but for how this effects your dogs on a regular basis. Thank you. Staff for excellent care while I was at Strong Memorial. Next stop, Conesus Lake Nursing Home where wonderful Nurses, CNAs, PT & OT Staff took good care of me. The food was good too! My loving I’d like to thank Bob from husband never missed a day Star Pest Control for of visiting me and took on lots coming to my house on of added responsibilities at such short notice to get rid our home. Last, but not least, our I had a bad fall on August family, church family, friends, 6th. A kind UPS man neighbors, and even people named Bob came to my in our Livonia community rescue. Many thanks to the sent many cards, visited and Doctors, ICU, and 7-3600 brought in flowers, food, and I just came back from walking my dogs and found that five plus feet on each side of [local road] in [local town] had been mowed. I don’t know which governmental agency is responsible, the County or the Town, but I am beyond furious. The growth along the roadway was not an impediment to traffic or to visibility. It was however habitat to pollinators, filled with butterflies and bees to name but two, who foraged there. What was destroyed was nearly two miles of habitat. Now, it and they are gone. For what reason? When will we stop being so focused on what gives us a sense of satisfaction, our need for making things “neat and tidy” in the landscape, that we destroy others in the process? When will we stop going our merry way without any thought to our impact on other lives?

I enjoy reading the Rants, especially those about poor restaurant service. However, while venting may make you feel better, a post about an unnamed restaurant in an unnamed city has no effect. Did you complain to the manager? Did you contact corporate? That gets results. Some of my friends cry, “But I don’t want anyone to lose their job!” Baloney! If the servers have such disdain for their customers, they don’t belong in the service industry. The position will then go to someone who truly needs it and will do a wonderful job. My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! I’m not “jumping” out of your way, if that’s your intention. I won’t

gifts. I thank you all so very much and tell you I could not have made it through the worst days of my life without your caring. Nancy Dechau Recently, there was a house fire in Mount Morris. I was so blessed to see how many people were online, looking to help and volunteering to collect and drop off items for the family who lost their home. Some were from the community, but many were from other towns, complete strangers moved with compassion. Thank you to all those who take the time and make the effort to help those in need!
speed up to accommodate you, and you won’t bully me into pulling over. I usually drive the speed limit, or maybe 5 mph over the limit, so it’s not like I’m crawling. On a 55-mph road with a sharp curve and the yellow recommended speed is 40, l won’t still do 55 because you are in a hurry. Is your impatience important enough to cause an accident? There are many reasons someone could hit their brakes. Please look further than the tip of your nose or the car’s bumper in front of it.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
