Thank you to the two young men from TrashAway. My garage door weighs over 100 pounds and was off its track. These two young men offered to fix it and spent at least thirty minutes doing it. I was able to get my rider out of the garage; no more raking! Your kindness is totally appreciated! I will always Regarding the Big Blue Boxes - I wanted to pick up an item and asked if I could 4 hours early. I was told they would try. I called an hour before I was coming, and I was told they would help me and get it for me. I got there and punched in the number. The lady had a complaining attitude about their business and a scowl on her face. She questioned whether I tracked it right, questioned if it was my right name. I answered of course to both questions. It took her less than five minutes to get it for me, yet she continued to kind of scold me. When I was in retail, I did things with a smile and went an extra mile. Yes, I will wait for email next time instead of being treated like this. I only did this this time because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to pick up during the rest of week. I will still shop there, but I hope there won’t be a repeat of this.

I want to thank all the wonderful people who helped me when I had a seizure in the fitting room at Kohl’s in Victor on November 1st. Coming out of a seizure with so many kind, caring people around me was so comforting and heartwarming. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get anyone’s name, so I am writing this here to say thank you all so very much! The only thing good about having a seizure in public is finding out how many kind, caring people there are in this world. In response to a brief rant about respect: a person can’t demand respect from others. Respect must be earned. Some ways respect can be earned is by how the person treats others. Treat people the way you would want to be treated. A simple smile and a hello are a good starting place. Usually, I find that those who have a lot to say about respect oddly enough don’t show respect to others. Look for ways to be kind and considerate to others, and respect will usually follow. No one respects someone who is always going out of their way to act ugly. Even if the other party is not respectful towards you, I always find that being gracious and conducting oneself with dignity at least makes one able to get a good night’s sleep and makes for a happier person overall.

Thank you to the manager and staff who helped locate the friends I was shopping with. Also, a big thank you the NYS Trooper and the Fishers Fire Department for their quick response and great care. Catherine C. A big thank you goes out to the Avon Dental in Tops Plaza, Avon. Dr. ZembiecWheeler and the staff at Avon Dental responded to an emergency request to replace a destroyed crown that I incurred. With a trip to Florida pending in two weeks, a mishap shattered a crown. My regular dentist was going on vacation and unable to respond in the time frame. It’s not easy getting our dog to their location, and on the proposed second appointment, my wife called to confirm. We were told, “Sorry, we don’t have you for tomorrow.” Sorry, chain store and your inept employees, but you lost my business. Shop local, folks, and forget the chains. The Chain Gang - lousy service, uncaring employees and a cancer to small independent businesses. The professionalism demonstrated by this organization is second to none. From the time I walked in until the time I walked out, I could see these people care! same frustration when he sees a car speeding or parking in a “no parking” zone. I’ve witnessed numerous drivers rolling through intersections without coming to a complete stop. I’ve seen drivers opening car doors without looking, causing law-abiding cyclists to crash into their open doors. Is the previous writer equally disturbed by these things? It seems to me that many motorists are annoyed at lawbreaking only when it involves cyclists. My point is that traffic participants, regardless of which mode of transportation is being used, should be following the law and be observant of others. Being careful and respecting everyone’s rights on the road prevents crashes and saves lives.

There are plenty of apps that can help with foliage-finding adventures, so a phone is a handy tool. When packing, also bring along hiking boots, comfortable layered clothing and any equipment you’d normally take for an afternoon in the great outdoors. Another idea is to hit the ATM machine prior to the visit. Many smaller towns and their local shops may not take credit cards, so it’s best to have cash on hand for food and souvenirs.

“Great gravy is only a plastic bag away! This is my great tip for separating the fat from pan drippings to make gravy. I take a quart-size plastic bag and set it in a glass measuring cup. Pour the pan drippings through a strainer, right into the bag. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and the fat will separate to the top. Seal the bag, and snip a small hole in a bottom corner, drain the liquid into a saucepan to make gravy. It’s that easy.” --

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A rejection of your attempt to be friendly leaves you with two choices: Try again, or give up. If you want to make another effort, go slowly. Let things develop without pressure. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It could be a problem dealing with unfamiliar people who do things differently from what you’re used to. But rely on that strong sense of purpose to get you through this difficult period. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) To avoid neglecting a personal matter because of a demanding new workplace schedule, start prioritizing immediately. Knowing how to apportion your time takes a little while to set up. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It won’t be easy to avoid some of the pressures that come with change. Best advice: Take things a step at a time, and you’ll be less likely to trip up while things are in a chaotic state. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A much-talkedabout workplace change could be coming soon. Be sure to get all the details involved in the process, and once you have them, you can decide how you want to deal with it. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might still believe that your trust was betrayed, although the facts would appear to prove the opposite. But by the week’s end you should learn something that will help set the record straight. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans could be a challenge because of shifting circumstances. But a more settled period starts by midweek, allowing you to firm up your plan-making once and for all. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The facts continue to be on your side. So make use of them in dealing with any challenge to your stated position. Also, open your mind to the offer of help from an unlikely source. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) There could still be a communication problem holding up the resolution of a troublesome situation. Stay with it, and eventually your message will get through and be understood. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A possible change in your workplace schedule might create a chaotic situation for a while. But once things begin to settle down, you might find that this could work to your advantage. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recent job-linked decision might need to be reassessed because of the possibility of finding benefits you might have overlooked. Check out all related data to help in the search. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal situation you agreed to might not be as acceptable to the other person involved in the matter. Avoid pressuring and bullying. Instead, seek common ground by talking things through. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for touching people’s minds as well as their hearts. You would make an outstanding educator. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Look Back…
These Behaviors Make You A Scam Target
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Nov. 10, 1775, a resolution, drafted by future U.S. president John Adams, creates the Continental Marines and is now observed as the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. The motto of the service is Semper Fidelis, meaning "Always Faithful" in Latin. • On Nov. 8, 1951, Yankees catcher Yogi Berra is voted the American League's most valuable player. He went on to be the league MVP twice more, in 1954 and 1955. • On Nov. 9, 1989, East German officials open the Berlin Wall, allowing free travel from East to West Berlin for the first time since 1961. The next day, celebrating Germans began to tear down one of the ugliest and most infamous symbols of the Cold War. The wall was built to keep a flood of refugees from fleeing Communist East Germany to the West.
(NAPS)—If you spend a lot of time on social media sites or looking for great online deals, you may wear a bullseye when it comes to scammers hunting for prey, according to groundbreaking fraud research from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation, BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust and the Stanford Center on Longevity. Researchers surveyed more than 1,400 Americans and Canadians who were targeted by scammers and reported the fraud to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which tracks scams. Nearly half of those surveyed did not engage with the fraudster. However, 30 percent engaged to some degree but ultimately did not lose money, while 23 percent engaged with the fraudster or offer and lost money. What separates victims from non-victims? “The path to victimization begins with engagement,” said FINRA Foundation President Gerri Walsh. “Social media and website scams are flourishing. Every time you respond to a friend request from someone you don’t know or click through to an unfamiliar website, you run the risk of being exposed to a scam.” Your chance of falling victim to a scam varies by type—for instance, online purchase scams, tech support ploys, fake check or sweepstakes frauds—and by the method in which you are exposed to the offer. For those exposed to a scam through social media or a website, the numbers are chilling. When exposed to a scam on social media, 91 percent engaged and 53 percent lost money. The odds of losing money to website scams were only slightly lower: 81 percent of consumers in the study who were exposed to a fraud via a website said they engaged— and 50 percent lost money. Other factors heighten the likelihood of falling for a fraud. Consumers were more likely to be victimized if they were isolated and didn’t have anyone to discuss the offer with, according to the study. Consequently, those who engaged scammers and lost money were less likely to be married and more likely to be widowed or divorced. “Sadly, loneliness and fraud victimization seem to go hand in hand,” noted Walsh. You’re also more likely to engage and lose money if you’re feeling financial strain, or have low levels of fi nancial literacy, the study found. Protect Yourself Take these steps to protect yourself from fraud: • Ask for input from others. Scammers try to isolate their victims. Don’t be afraid to contact a friend, or a company or organization you trust for advice. It also helps to do additional research before sending any money. One easy action: Do an Internet search to see if the website or pitch has been flagged as fraudulent or potentially fraudulent by news organizations or members of the public. • Focus on your fi nancial health and literacy. Individuals under fi nancial strain and those with lower levels of fi nancial literacy may be more susceptible to scammers. • Knowledge is power. Knowing about scams and scammer tactics can be your best defense in successfully reducing the effect of scams. Keep up with the latest frauds by subscribing to consumer newsletters and seeking out information on current scams. One-third of consumers who were targeted by a scammer, but did not engage with the offer, already knew about the specific type of scam. In addition, consumers who understood the tactics and behaviors of scammers tended not to engage with fraudsters. To learn more about how to protect your money, visit www.FINRA.org/LearnMore.

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING
Enjoy Your Hunting Season W/O Damaging Your Hearing
(NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind.
Order Your Custom Hearing Protection Now!
Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more.

CROSSWORD
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Here’s No. 1 Reason to Remove Gallbladder ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband’s doctor is telling him to have his gallbladder removed because sometimes he has pain in his right side. They did all kind of tests, but he has pain when he drives long hours or when he eats salads, not fried or fatty foods. Can you tell me more about the surgery, and what it might be like for him after the surgery? -- A.M. ANSWER: Almost every time a gallbladder needs to be removed, it is because of gallstones. Gallstones are common. Six percent of men and 9% of women have them, but most of the time, people have no symptoms. It isn’t always clear whether the symptoms people have are due to the gallstones that are found on imaging studies, such as CT or ultrasound, but there are some clues to help decide whether a gallbladder that contains stones needs to be removed. The classic symptoms are pain in the right upper abdomen, especially after eating a fatty meal, such as fried food (some people eat salads with lots of fatty dressing). Sometimes gallbladder pain is not food-associated. Symptoms at nighttime are not uncommon. Nausea, bloating, lower chest pain, belching and burning pain all are well-described with gallbladder disease, and the proof comes when surgery relieves the symptoms. Sometimes, the imaging test can give clues. Thickening of the gallbladder wall or pain with pressure on the gallbladder (Murphy’s sign) are suggestive of acute gallbladder inflammation. Unfortunately, doctors aren’t always right. Occasionally a person’s gallbladder is removed, and it doesn’t help the symptoms at all. Then, a new search needs to be done to discover the true cause of the symptoms. Most people do very well after gallbladder surgery. The liver itself takes over the job of storing bile in the ducts of the liver, and bile is released into the intestines appropriately after eating. However, it takes time for the system to get adjusted to not having a gallbladder, and only 60% of people are completely back to normal after three months. A few people have persistent symptoms for years. Thus, it’s wise to be as sure as possible that symptoms are due to gallbladder disease before undergoing surgery. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been unable to complete a yawn for a couple of years. You know, that final “aaah” feeling. My doctor just smiled and offered no explanation; I’m sure she had never heard of this before. I am a 70-year-old woman who is retired. Any ideas, suggestions or recommendations to end this unsatisfied feeling? -- M.G. ANSWER: Nobody knows for sure why we yawn. It can be related to low oxygen, fatigue or boredom, but there is a “yawn center” of the brain (in the hypothalamus) and even fetuses have been shown to yawn. I have read two possible explanations why some people have incomplete or unsatisfying yawns: The first is that in some people, anxiety is the impetus to yawn, and that type of yawn just isn’t satisfying. The second is that stretching of the muscles of the face and jaw are necessary for the yawn to be complete. For some people, repeated stretching (from a “forced” yawn) and breathing in very deeply can lead to a satisfying yawn. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Dansville’s Bonnie Sisak Retires from Noyes Auxiliary By Amanda Dudek
B
onnie Sisak has been involved in the Noyes Auxiliary for many years, including several years as its president, chairing its second largest fund-raiser, the Chip in Fore Noyes Golf Classic Tournament for 12 years. Sisak played a key role in the event’s record of success. A beloved business teacher before working for Noyes Memorial Hospital, Sisak was also the secretary to the Vice President of Patient Care Services. Those who have worked with her such as Amy Pollard, the President and CEO of UR Medicine Noyes Health and Mary Ann Scharmberg, current Noyes Auxiliary President, have described Sisak as a wonderful leader, a person of integrity, honest, disciplined, organized, detail oriented with a commitment to working and a very friendly person with a good sense of humor. “Bonnie loved her community and has a very giving spirit,” said Pollard. “She was very good at cajoling volunteers into participating.” Her tireless efforts showed particularly well in the annual golf tournament which never made less than $10,000 in the 12 years that Sisak organized it, totaling just over $15,000 this year and nearly $150,000 overall. “It has become very successful with the help of a lot of people,” said Sisak sincerely. “There are many employees in the hospital who help. I tried to make the whole tournament a project in which a lot of people could participate so that they would share the success of the project.” “Noyes has a large and committed group of volunteers who make up Noyes Health Auxiliary,” said Pollard. “Noyes is incredibly blessed to have such a supportive community.” Scharmberg concurred. “It is all volunteers from our organization who do these fund-raisers,” she said. “People from the Dansville area and surrounding communities are stupendous in giving, and every bit goes to the hospital.” Perhaps the largest contribution in which Sisak was involved was the Auxiliary’s recent contribution of $305,500 to Noyes Memorial Hospital which funded the new Mary Saunders Bierman Emergency Department including the reception area, furniture and patient rooms. “We make pledges to the hospital, and the biggest pledge was for $305,500,” said Scharmberg. “We pledged that 5 years ago when Bonnie Sisak was president, and we have accomplished it.” “The members of the Auxiliary believe in the importance of Noyes to Dansville, the county and the surrounding area,” said Sisak. “That is why they are willing to donate their time. We try to do things that are patient or visitor centered.” This month, Bonnie Sisak retired from the Auxiliary when she and her husband, George, moved out-of-state. Sisak said she will miss Noyes wonderful volunteers and employees the most. “Our community is going to miss her,” said Pollard of the Lioness and Women’s Civic

Bonnie and Auxiliary chair Mary Ann Schramburg (right) presenting the check from the tournament to Noyes’ CEO Amy Pollard (left) at the Auxiliary Fall Dinner on Tuesday night! Club member. “I am sure she will continue to volunteer because it is in her nature. For us, it is definitely the end of an era.” “It has been marvelous,” agreed Scharmberg. In fact, at Scharmberg’s request, Sisak created an instruction manual (14 pages) on the golf tournament alone. “You look at it and you go, I can’t believe she did all this by herself. It is something else!” Although they will miss her, the Noyes Auxiliary members will continue on with their various fund-raisers, including their largest: The Spice Box. The Spice Box gift shop complete with coffee bar is inside of Noyes Memorial Hospital. “People come to The Spice Box to browse and shop, not just for our patients,” said Scharmberg. “We have items for nurses, firemen, children and babies and popular items like our jewelry and Willow Tree figurines.” The Auxiliary also holds other events throughout the year. “Our next events will be our Craft Boutique at which many beautiful items will be available for purchase and our Tree of Lights event,” shared Scharmberg. “Anyone can purchase a beautiful angel ornament to honor a loved one or in memory of a loved one; that loved one’s name is put on it, and it is placed on one of our three trees here or on our tree in Geneseo.” The Auxiliary also holds a flower sale just before Mother’s Day in the Spring. The Auxiliary grants multiple scholarships each year. “We set aside $5,000 each year for young people interested in the medical field, and the students this year were absolutely magnificent,” recalled Scharmberg. “Each one of them said they wanted to return to their hometown area to practice, and I thought that was extremely generous.” The Auxiliary also awards three $100 scholarships annually to three students from the Genesee Valley Health Academy, as well. Currently, the Auxiliary is working to raise money for a portable X-ray unit and charging stations for visitors who come to the hospitals so that they can charge their cellphones and devices. Pollard, Scharmberg and Sisak encourage community members to consider joining them. “We could always use volunteers in The Spice Box and our other events and activities,” said Scharmberg. Sisak agreed, “Noyes is a gem in the Valley, and it needs our support.” Enjoy this article? STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver * In 2006, an Illinois police officer was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. This probably would not be noteworthy, except that it was the same police officer who received an award for making the most DUI arrests in his county.
STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver * Did you know that in a random group of 23 people, there's a 50% likelihood that two will share a birthday? It seems counterintuitive -- there are, after all, 365 days in a year -- but the number-crunchers assert that it's true. In a group of 57 people, it's almost certain that two of them will have the same birthday -- the chances are more than 99%. Once you get up to 124 people, the chances are only 1 in 100 trillion that there [SET ITAL]won't[END ITAL] be a duplicated birthday.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
BLACK RIBBONS During the Victorian age, there were many rules and regulations surrounding death that dictated the wearing of heavy black clothing, black jewelry, and the observance of mourning behavior. While these customs have been generally relegated to the past, the practice of wearing black ribbons and armbands survives as a public display of the wearer’s mourning status. After observing the proper period of private mourning, those who have lost a family member or friend may wish to continue to remember the deceased in public in a way that conveys their sadness in an observable yet discreet manner. Not only does a black ribbon help mourners continue their observance of mourning, but it alerts onlookers of their special status. When deciding what to wear to a funeral it is always best to go conservative. While it’s true that you don’t have to wear black, you should dress in a way that shows respect. That means avoiding bright colors, flashy prints, and glittery fabrics. If you are interested in learning more about the services we offer, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We serve families at their time of need by providing personalized, compassionate, and professional funeral services. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Mourning is not forgetting... It is an undoing. WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.
THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more. A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.
