A poem about saying goodbye to your four-legged friend
GRYFFIN That border collie stare, peering into my soul, crossing the lines of communication where no words are necessary-how well you knew me, tolerated me, like a besotted lover but ever more faithful. Over the years, as the house emptied, we formed an alliance you and I syncing our gaits, comfortable in our routine. We watched each other’s hair turn gray, more amused than alarmed, each night holding the inevitable at bay with our playtime antics: hide and go seek (you never did learn to check the front coat closet) and running the inside track in the living room-catch me if you can! --an amusing sight, I’m sure, for anyone passing by the picture window. Immortal youngsters we, puppies at heart, until that Monday morning when you and my world suddenly collapsed.
At the vets, you lay quietly, obediently, still the gentleman you always were, chin resting heavily on white paws (four, like socks), a tired sphinx awaiting the quick needle prick-too quick!-me, caressing and crooning, tears flowing, your betrayer, Judas with a kiss. Four quick huffs, your familiar warm breath gracing my hand, then nothing. I wait, unsure. Those eyes--still liquid, still warm, still lingering on my face. Border collie stare, piercing my soul. Did you know? DID YOU KNOW? That I did it for love?

GENERAL CONTRACTING HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There could be some negative reaction to your tough stance when making a recent decision. But overall, your efforts result in well-earned recognition and all that can follow from that. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your financial situation seems confusing, even for the fiscally savvy Bovine. Maybe it’s the conflicting advice you’re getting. Check it out before things get too tangled to unknot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A relaxed attitude goes a long way in helping you deal with any of life’s irritants that might be popping up this week. You’re also a reassuring role model for others in the same situation. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect favors creativity, which should persuade you to work on your artistic projects. If time is a problem, prioritize your commitments so that your work isn’t compromised. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Scrutinize all the job offers that interest you. Most are honest and worth considering. But a few might not be completely forthcoming about what the job is and what the salary and benefits are. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unexpected snafu could delay the completion of a project you’re eager to finish. Find out what’s causing it, fix it, and if you need help, don’t be shy about asking for it. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An idea that could be helpful to you comes from an unlikely source. Listen to it. Discuss it. If necessary, adjust it. If it looks as if it might work out quite well, go ahead and use it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about allowing someone to share a very personal secret with you. This could cause problems down the line with others who are involved in that person’s private life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A cooling down of a relationship could be the result of neglect, unintended or not. To save it from icing over, you need to warm it up with a large dose of hot Sagittarius passion. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good time to get involved with a number of family matters that involve money and other issues that might jeopardize the closeness between and among family members. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cheer up. That difficult person who appears to be deliberately stalling your project might just need to be reassured of the value she or he brings to it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Good news! Expect to feel re-energized now that you’ve gone through that stressful energydepleting period involving a lot of changes. Now, go out there and show them what you can do. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a warm, giving nature that inspires many to follow your example. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Just like humans, pets need a combination of physical activity and caloric moderation to maintain healthy weights. Daily caloric needs for indoor cats range from 180 to 200 calories per day. The larger a dog is, the more calories it needs.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

What a great group of snowboard instructors at Bristol! They are always upbeat, energetic and make learning fun both in individual lessons and brigades. It can be intimidating but they break things down and make it seem less scary and overwhelming, building skill bit by bit. Kudos and keep up the good work!
Great job by all our local town & village crews keeping our roads clear and safe so far this Winter!
Thank you to a good neighbor, Pete, who has been keeping my driveway workable this winter! Thanks to the people who plow the roads, the people who deliver the mail, daily paper & Penny Saver!
Tree lot owners beware, there is a local firewood “entrepreneur” who will clean up your tree lot after it has been logged. Make sure you go through and mark every tree to be culled (cut) before you let him cut. If you do not, he will cut up young prime log potential trees! FYI - Do not trust this local firewood entrepreneur!
In response to what about your son: It’s easy to try and shift the blame on the son, but let me tell you from experience, a woman, especially a wife, can pull a lot of weight in the household. I raised a very hardworking, respectful son, who loves us, his parents, very much. His wife caused so many problems between us that for a while, we didn’t see our son or GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

grandchild like we used to. Remember, my son has to live with his wife, and she made his life a living you know what, making accusatory comments about us, etc., So, you must look at the bigger picture before casting stones. My son finally came to visit so our grandchild could see us. They live out of town. He came without his wife. He tried to repair the situation the best he could.
I must respond to Attention Daughters-inlaw Rant with Attention Sisters-in-law. I was thrilled when I married my husband because I was getting a sister-in-law, I always wanted a sister. Turns out, it’s not so thrilling. She will stop at nothing to cause trouble, from spreading lies about

my husband and me to never including us in any holiday... ever! My husband and I have tried to rise above her ignorance by having them for holidays and birthdays, but it’s become too uncomfortable to keep having them over. She leaves our home, and she starts trouble again. I feel horrible about this. It’s amazing to us that with such a small family, everyone can’t just stop the nasty words and move forward. Life is too short. Everyone is in their 70’s. Let’s all just get along! Enough!

the corner and pulled in, and he laughed as he put his handicap sticker on his windshield. I looked at him like, “Are you really going to do this?” If he had manners, he would have seen that I don’t have a handicap sticker to hang up. I have permanent handicap plates. I am also a senior citizen but with manners, so I didn’t say anything. If they would have watched, they would have seen that I must use a cane or walker to get around or grab a cart if one is close by. I have had two major back surgeries and 18 shots so far in my back. I was hurt by the lack of manners people have nowadays. I hope they had a good shopping day and can live with being meanmannered seniors.

Cancer Treatments Kill Not Cure, Friends Say ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a relative with cancer who is about to begin multiple therapeutic interventions. My friends tell me that all cancer treatments are toxic and kill people instead of curing them, and that I should tell my relative to look into other forms of treatment. What do you suggest I do? -- K.C. ANSWER: There are hundreds of different types of cancer, and they vary widely in their capacity to grow and damage the individual, and in their response to treatment. For decades, this has meant mostly surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, but now includes newer treatments, including immune therapy. While not all cancers are curable in everybody, every year brings sometimes incremental, sometimes dramatic improvements in life expectancy for individual cancers. Some cancers that were rapidly fatal even a few years ago are now curable in most cases. Getting the right diagnosis quickly and getting to an expert in treating that cancer are critical to having the best chance of a good outcome. Treating some cancers remains difficult, and in many cases the treatments have significant side effects. Surgery scars may impair function, and chemotherapy can cause severe symptoms and may permanently affect body systems, as can radiation. It can be very hard on a family member observing these treatments, and if his or her loved one nevertheless succumbs eventually to the cancer, it is understandable to think the suffering the person went through was in vain. So, while I understand where your friends may be coming from, their well-meaning advice, based on bad experiences possibly a long time ago, might cause your relative with cancer to delay the potentially lifesaving treatments that are available now. A study published in July 2018 showed that people who use alternative medical treatments for cancer are less likely to be cured and have a shorter life expectancy. My advice is that you encourage your relative to find the most expert cancer treatment available. It’s up to your relative to accept the recommendations of the expert, but delaying the best available treatment in order to consider unproven therapies is likely to result in harm. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had the same problem forever: I don’t understand why buttermilk coffee creamer seems to get outdated faster than regular creamer. Does the butter in it have anything to do with this? -- C.H. ANSWER: Buttermilk doesn’t have butter in it. It was so named because it was originally made with what was left after separating butter from the unhomogenized cream that had been allowed to ferment with airborne bacteria, making it slightly acidic. Modern cultured buttermilk is made from pasteurized, homogenized milk, usually 1% to 2% fat, and inoculated with healthy bacteria, which makes lactic acid from the sugars in the milk. This acid makes buttermilk resistant to the unhealthy bacteria that causes spoilage. It also causes a slight sour taste, which some people like and others don’t. Commercial heavy cream, and coffee creamers made from heavy cream, have a very long shelf life largely because they are pasteurized at ultra-high temperatures, so they last even longer than buttermilk. The high fat content also retards bacteria growth. Both buttermilk-based and cream-based creamers will stay good longer than their expiration date. Your nose is very good for telling when it has gone bad. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

If You’re Feeling Down, You’re Not Alone. It’s That Time of Year
A Look Back…
(NAPS)—You may have heard the terms—winter blues, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern. No matter what you call it, with approximately 17.3 million adults in the U.S. experiencing seasonal depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, feeling gloomy this time of year isn’t uncommon—but it can be overcome.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
The Problem - Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern (formerly called SAD) can affect anyone of any age. While January and February are the typical peak months for the disorder, symptoms can persist through April, according to Mental Health America.
* On Feb. 21, 1970, national security adviser Henry Kissinger begins secret peace talks with North Vietnamese representative Le Duc Tho at a villa outside Paris. The North Vietnamese were demanding an unconditional U.S. withdrawal on a fixed date.
Doctor’s Advice - When that feeling of sadness persists for several weeks, it’s time to take action, according to Dr. Desreen Dudley, a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Behavioral Health Provider of Therapeutic Services for Teladoc Health. “If someone has a few days of feeling low, that’s normal and typically nothing to worry about. It’s when the feeling lingers for weeks and people lose interest in daily activities and suffer persistent negative thoughts, that lend a stronger basis for Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Affective Pattern diagnosis,” she says. What To Watch For - Other symptoms she warns about are: • Change in appetite • Change in sleep pattern • Decreased energy • Decreased concentration • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt • An inability to think, concentrate, or finish tasks at work or school • Thinking about suicide, self-harm, or death
* On Feb. 20, 1998, American Tara Lipinski wins the gold medal in women’s figure skating at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, becoming the sport’s youngest gold medalist at age 15. * On Feb. 23, 1958, Formula One champion Juan Manuel Fangio of Argentina is kidnapped in Cuba by a group of Fidel Castro’s rebels. Fangio was taken from his Havana hotel the day before the Cuba Grand Prix and was released unharmed after the race ended.
Dr. Dudley contends individuals already struggling with depressive disorders are susceptible to SAD patterns. For older Americans, a Vitamin D deficiency can exacerbate low moods. On the other end of the spectrum, she has worked with newly independent college students who find SAD a heavy burden and say their new responsibilities of classes, exams and jobs can compound their depression. For some, they may be sleeping in more and further limiting their exposure to sunlight. What To Do - In addition to considering therapy, such as virtual care, which is available on your terms and from any location you choose, Dr. Dudley recommends: • Avoiding or cutting back on alcohol and other addictive substances • Eating healthfully—more lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and eliminating sugar • Daily exercise at least 30 minute a day (walking counts) • Yoga or meditation • Learning about and trying light therapy • Regularly surrounding yourself with those you enjoy being around. When To Seek Help - According to a recent global study conducted by Ipsos MORI for Teladoc Health, individuals often recognize when they’re struggling, but even so, over a third of the respondents who have had one mental health episode admitted to not seeking professional help. The reason? For many, it’s often the difficulty in finding mental health care. “Thankfully, virtual care is becoming increasingly available as a source of convenient mental health care,” Dr. Dudley says. “It eliminates the traditional obstacles of in-person visits and has opened up access for anyone with a busy schedule, individuals who may have difficulty getting out of the house and students who may fear the stigma of walking into the campus mental health clinic.” GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Climate Smart Canandaigua: The First Year By Suzette van der Sterre, Climate Smart Canandaigua Chair
A
lthough well into the new year, looking back at 2019, Climate Smart Canandaigua has accomplished much in its first year.
Climate Smart Communities is a New York State program that helps local governments take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to a changing climate. Just over a year ago, City Council approved the formation of the Climate Smart Canandaigua Task Force to provide ongoing implementation of actions related to climate change and increase efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and achieve cost savings in the process; assess baseline conditions, establish goals, and develop plans and suggest policies to achieve goals; and educate the community and stakeholders on the value of the goals and plans. On April 23, 2019, the City of Canandaigua became the 23rd Climate Smart Certified Community, achieving a Bronze designation from a host of initiatives the City accomplished over the last ten years. These projects include the solar-power array, an electric vehicle charging station, and the backyard composting program. One substantial component of Climate Smart Canandaigua’s mission is to develop strong public outreach. To communicate directly with the community, Climate Smart Canandaigua maintains a webpage on the City’s website and has an active Facebook page. In April, Climate Smart Canandaigua and Wood Library co-hosted Earthapolooza, an all day, all-ages event promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship. In addition, the Task Force has hosted a table at the Canandaigua Farmers Market, marched in the 4th of July Parade, and participated in the Downtown Arts and Music Festival.

needed for us to set realistic goals and track our progress,” said Suzette van der Sterre, Climate Smart Canandaigua Chair. “Over the next several years, our job is to build on our successes and expand the initiatives necessary to ensure the City of Canandaigua is a leader in sustainability. We appreciate all of the support we have received from the community and look forward to many future successes.” On March 28th from 10:00am-1:00pm, Climate Smart Canandaigua will be hosting a Green Vendor Fair at the Primary/ Elementary School LINK Gym, where residents can learn more about the green products and services that are available locally.
The City of Canandaigu receives bronze-level Climate Smart Certified Community certification for past projects such as the solar-power array, an electric vehicle charging station, and the backyard composting program.
In October, Climate Smart Canandaigua partnered with Impact Earth to conduct a Municipal Solid Waste Audit on all seven municipal facilities. “With this data, we will work with City staff to identify educational opportunities and policy changes that will help increase the City’s landfill diversion rate,” said Rob Richardson, Assistant City Manager and Climate Smart Canandaigua Coordinator. “Overall, 2019 was an incredibly successful year for our Task Force and the City, and Climate Smart Canandaigua is eager to continue our work to ensure Canandaigua remains ‘The Chosen Spot.’” At the end of 2019, Climate Smart Canandaigua received a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to complete a Municipal Operations Greenhouse Gas Inventory, a Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory, a Climate Vulnerability Assessment, and a Natural Resources Inventory. “With help from the NYSDEC grant, the Task Force will partner with Impact Earth to complete these foundational steps toward effective climate action. These assessments will provide the data

gvpennysaver.com BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.
Dental Quiz Answer 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
b. dentist a. enamel c. molars a. dental floss b. 2 c. cavity
While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. Pilot: Navigating, calculating wind speeds and fuel ration and much more are involved in piloting an aircraft. Math skills can be lifesaving when pilots have to make adjustments and calculations thousands of feet in the air.
Request changes to work schedules. While technology may have largely eliminated the separation between the office and home, working parents can use that to their advantage by asking their employees to alter their work schedules. Telecommuting one or two days a week can help parents feel more connected to their families, while flex schedules can ensure working parents don’t miss any of their children’s dance recitals or weekday afternoon ballgames.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.
Do You Love To Clean? Come join our team! • DAYS, M-F 7:30am - 4pm • With performance & attendance rewards can earn over $500/wk. • Paid vacation/holidays provided w/required time in service. • Must be at least 21, have own car & be able to pass drug, background and driving record screening.
