COUNTDOWN TO VALENTINE’S DAY
SAY “I LOVE YOU” WITH MUSIC
February 13: Kiss Day Couples can pucker up and spend a few extra moments showing their affection with some kisses. The lips are quite sensitive to touch, and kissing is one of the more renowned expressions of intimacy.
Music can express many emotions, be a source of comfort and encouragement or simply induce a peaceful state of mind. For those looking to express their love for a special someone, songs with or without lyrics can help convey such feelings. Music lovers may greatly appreciate songs chosen especially for them in honor of Valentine’s Day. Therefore, as a heart-warming gift, curate a special selection of songs that can be gifted to a loved one. Even though it’s an inexpensive way to show you care, the meaning behind the gift can be profound. While “mix tapes” of the 1990s may have fallen out of favor, individuals who subscribe to streaming music services can do something similar by establishing custom playlists. Look to options such as Pandora, Amazon Music, and Spotify for inspiration. For those who want to go a little further, upload audio versions of several songs and create a YouTube video montage featuring meaningful photos. When considering which songs to include, think about “Endless Love,” which Billboard places in the No. 1 spot on its list of the top 50 love songs. This song remained at the top of the charts for nine weeks in 1981 and features the vocal talents of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.

1-855-681-3113 MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.

585-802-1544 SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CHIMNEY MAINTENANCE A PART OF HOME SAFETY
Waterlines, Electric Services, Sewer
Even though chimneys do not require daily upkeep, regular maintenance efforts help chimneys operate safely and prevent deaths and injuries while protecting homes from fire. Various problems can arise when chimneys are not well maintained. Such problems include chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and early failure of the chimney and heating sources that the chimney vents. Carbon monoxide can be scary, as it is virtually invisible without a proper detector. The National Vital Statistics System says that, in 2015, 393 deaths resulted from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. The Canada Safety Council says that body tissue and cells can’t function without oxygen. Chimney fires are another potential byproduct of poor chimney maintenance. The Chimney Safety Institute of America notes that chimneys expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke, water vapor, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, and assorted minerals, which can condense on the inside of the chimney flue. The residue, called creosote, is highly combustible. With the right conditions, a chimney fire can occur.

Gordy & Friends Improves the Lives of Local Dogs B Y
A M A N DA
If you have ever felt concern for a dog who always seems to be chained up outside, Kathy Karle-Walsh understands how you feel. Walsh founded Gordy & Friends in 2013 not long after adopting her dog, Gordon, from Lollypop Farms. She named her organization after Gordon. “When my husband and I adopted him from Lollypop, I kind of went crazy about dogs,” said Walsh, referring to the passion she felt to help as many as she could. “I really started Gordy & Friends in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2013 that I officially put the information on Facebook.” Gordy & Friends is an outreach organization and nonprofit. “We are not a rescue,” Walsh clarified. “Our primary goal is to help dogs who are chained or penned 24/7.” Walsh and the volunteers who work with Gordy & Friends were inspired to work in Ontario, Livingston and Steuben Counties where they look for dogs to help as well as some of Monroe County in which they help some families. “There are lots of dogs in underserved areas where owners need help,” she said. “We work right on the spot to improve the life of the dog.” Although volunteers and donations came slowly at first, both have increased since Gordy & Friends became a nonprofit in 2015. “It was a lot of hard work, but it was definitely worth it,” said Walsh. “More groups are sending us food, dog supplies and dog toys. We have great volunteers and supporters who are very good to us.” Gordy & Friends appreciate the support as they are tackling a very big issue. “People do not know that in New York State, with some exceptions, it is not illegal to leave your dog chained up outside constantly,” explained Walsh. Therefore, she pointed out, calling the authorities usually does not change things for the dog, so that’s why they help instead of calling others to get involved. “Gordy & Friends is there nonjudgmentally, not to call the authorities, but to change life for the dog,” said Gordon, the namesake of Walsh. “We would like to see someone go Gordy & Friends from having a dog that was an outside dog to having a dog that is now living inside as a member of the family. We would love to put ourselves out of business!” Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that will happen anytime soon. “It doesn’t happen overnight, but we are dedicated to the dogs,” shared Walsh. “We help with spaying and neutering and vet care. We help by walking these dogs - with permission, of course. We are hoping to model and be a positive example.” Gordy & Friends also cares about pet owners. “We are not just kind to dogs but people, too, whether this means helping out once or regularly,” said Walsh. “We are working toward a social revolution, closing the gap between what is legal and what is best for the dog.” - Kathy Karle-Walsh The disconnect often comes from personal experiences. “If you were raising chickens in your backyard, and I told you that you should bring your chickens inside to live in your house with you, you might think that is ridiculous. Sometimes, owners of a dog that has always lived outside and who grew up with their dogs living outside feel the same way.”

Still, Gordy & Friends plans to continue helping wherever they can. “We see dogs in all states of need, but one of the saddest things is a lonely dog; it’s heartbreaking,” stated Walsh. “We are out there just trying to help. Many times, people are Kathy Karle-Walsh with a dog she is walking. Volunteering to very open and walk dogs is one of the ways Gordy & Friends helps. happy to accept our help, and we are very thankful. We want to uplift, help and be positive.” Dogs are a lifetime commitment of time, energy, attention, and love. Please consider all of these before adopting one. • Dogs require time, energy and love, including attention and care. • Dogs need daily exercise and interaction. Consider 20-30-minute walks as well as playtime and interaction for physical and emotional well-being. • Do not leave your dog outside chained or penned nor indoors crated or isolated 24/7. Dogs need interaction, mobility and socialization. • Consider the cost of healthy food and vet care - your dog deserves both, and fresh, clean water. • Training your dog takes time, patience, and kindness. Never use force or anger; it will not work. • Spay or Neuter: it is for your dog’s health, and it is also humane. Gordy & Friends gives pet owners options • Consider the grooming needs your beyond leaving pets chained outside. dog will have such as fur, nails, flea prevention, etc. • Please adopt; shelters and rescues are full of dogs and puppies who all need love and a second chance. • Research the breed that will fit your lifestyle best and accommodate the needs of that breed.

VALENTINE’S GIFTS FOR GUYS Leather gloves: Leaving home when the weather is frightful can be a challenge. But warm, stylish gloves may help the process along. Look for gloves that also have touchscreen compatible tips, so that he doesn’t have to remove the gloves to send that “I (heart) you” text.
DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel Cracking The Code To Society’s Most Feared Disease (NAPS)-Even more than cancer, there’s one disease most people fear. The thought of falling prey to Alzheimer’s disease and to the inevitable desecration of the mind is something that can make even the bravest shudder. After all, if you’re robbed of your sense of who you really are, you’re doomed to live your last days without the dignity that defines you and that you hold dear. Perhaps the ultimate horror of Alzheimer’s disease is that it is as indiscriminate, merciless, and devastating as a wind-swept wildfire. As a result, a disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer’s disease has become a Holy Grail of sorts in the biotech industry. The disease is so ubiquitous, it casts a shadow over just about everyone’s family. At the same time, it exacts a devastating financial toll on society “perhaps even greater than cancer” with Alzheimer’s disease patients needing 24-hour care for an average of eight years and sometimes as many as 20 years. The estimated cost for caring for Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is well in excess of a quarter of a trillion dollars per annum. This doesn’t even include unpaid caregiving. Also, Alzheimer’s disease is ranked as the third leading cause of death of seniors in the United States, surpassed only by heart disease and cancer. Approximately 6 million Americans have become its victims, and this number rises each year as lifespans increase due to advancements in medical science. Progress From Pharmaceuticals - Fortunately, a few pharmaceutical companies, including Biogen, AC Immune SA and NervGen Pharma, have come up with ways to potentially treat the condition and perhaps slow it down. NervGen’s medical researchers are working on what may become an important breakthrough for Alzheimer’s and other afflictions that are defined by nerve damage. Could This Be Modern Medicine’s Holy Grail? Until recently, NervGen’s focus has mostly been on developing nerve regeneration for the treatment of spinal cord injuries. In fact, some remarkable results have been achieved in preclinical trials, including one where the treated rodents regained substantial functionality in their legs after sustaining severe spinal cord damage. Assuming it also works in humans, the medical science world will be paying very close attention because there are no known therapies that can stimulate human nerve regeneration now. In addition, NervGen intends to commence a Phase 2 clinical trial for treating multiple sclerosis. The company’s drug candidate is expected to treat many of such debilitating symptoms as numbness, loss of sensation, chronic and debilitating pain, partial loss of movement, paralysis, and even incontinence due to additional mechanisms of action called “remyelination” and “plasticity.” The research team also believes that the same nerve-rejuvenating biotechnology can be adapted to treat Alzheimer’s disease, not just mitigate its symptoms due to its truly novel and innovate approach. The essence of this technology is that it unlocks a damaged nervous system’s natural ability to repair itself. Proprietary molecules “unstick” nerves and prevent new ones from getting stuck by interfering with synaptic-like connections so the nerves can regrow in places that are normally highly inhibited by scar tissue. Heretofore, no drugs have been approved anywhere in the world for nerve regeneration and remyelination, as well as improved plasticity in damaged nerves. Additionally, existing treatments are not considered very effective. So, the stakes are especially high for NervGen to create a blockbuster drug candidate that promises to even outshine any other Alzheimer’s disease drug. This is a wonderful opportunity to pioneer nerve repairing drug therapies that target some of the most devastating and pervasive diseases known to humankind. NEW TRANSPLANTS ARE CHANGING LIVES (NAPSI)—Organ transplants have been saving lives for many years. You may even know someone who has received a kidney or a heart transplant, and what a difference that gift of life has made. Another type of transplant has been changing lives in incredible new ways—the transplantation of hands and faces. More than 100 people worldwide have received these types of transplants: a veteran who lost his limbs in war, a woman whose face was devastated in an attack, a child who lost his hands to severe infection. All have had their lives transformed. These procedures are called “Vascularized Composite Allograft” organ transplants, or VCA transplants. They are composed of multiple types of tissue. With a hand transplant, for example, bones, blood vessels, nerves and skin must all be attached to the remaining arm. So many tissues, however, make VCA transplants extremely complex. The surgery requires the involvement of dozens of surgeons and other medical professionals and can take 16 hours or more. Recovery is also demanding for patients; rehabilitation can be a full-time job for one to two years. Yet, the results are life changing. VCA transplants can restore abilities and independence in ways that artificial limbs and reconstructive surgery cannot. Just consider the difference a working hand with moving fingers and a sense of touch could make. It can mean the ability to take care of oneself, work, drive and play. Face transplants enable recipients to rejoin society, often ending isolation and depression. VCA and traditional organ transplants are the same in some respects. Criteria for matching donors and recipients include the need for compatible blood and tissue types. However, VCA requires matching for additional features such as skin tone, body size and hair color. Gender may also be taken into consideration. A commonly asked question about face transplants is whether the recipient will look like the donor. The answer is yes and no. Yes, skin characteristics such as moles, freckles and scars will transfer to the recipient. However, because the recipient’s underlying bone structure is apt to be different from the donor’s, resemblance will likely be minimal. Like with kidneys, livers and other organs, there is a national waiting list for VCA transplants that matches donors with potential recipients. However, enrolling as an organ donor on a state or national registry does not mean you’re authorizing VCA donation. Your family would make the decision about VCA donation after your death. You can learn more at www.organdonor.gov, a website of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Sneezing Can Provoke This Unusual Vertigo ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: After many years of various treatments, including allergy shots, food studies and an ear tube, I was recently diagnosed with “semicircular canal dehiscence.” Can you explain what this is and the treatment (besides surgery) to relieve the symptoms of inner ear pressure, dizziness and pressure and pulsation in the head? Are there any medications? -- J.D.W. ANSWER: Semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is an unusual cause of vertigo. Vertigo is sometimes referred to as dizziness, but “dizziness” may refer to both unsteadiness (a feeling that you are going to pass out, which medically is referred to as “presyncope”) or true vertigo (a sensation of movement when the person is actually still). The vertigo in semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is different from most other causes of vertigo because it can be provoked by loud noises, coughing or sneezing. It is caused by abnormally thin bone in the semicircular canals, part of the organ of balance in the inner ear. The diagnosis is confirmed by a CT scan of the temporal bone. The only treatment I have read that consistently is effective is surgery. An ear tube is sometimes tried in people who have symptoms with pressure changes. Medications used in some cases of vertigo, such as meclizine (Antivert), usually will make SCDS symptoms worse in the long term. Anti-nausea medications like ondansetron (Zofran) may help if nausea is severe, but have their own side effects. Vestibular rehabilitation by a specially trained physical or occupational therapist may have some benefit if surgery isn’t contemplated.
HOW TO ENJOY A M ORE ECO-FRIENDLY W INTER Install a programmable thermostat. The United States Department of Energy estimates that consumers can save 10 percent on their heating bills by rolling back their thermostat 10 to 15 percent over an eight-hour period. Program your thermostat to keep the heat low w hile you’re at w ork or aw ay from home. The latest digital thermostats are both userfriendly and visually appealing w hen hung on the w all.
The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 72 years old. This year he was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate. For now, the doctor has inserted a catheter. My question is: What process or what treatment is best at his age? We are in the Philippines. -- M.M.C. ANSWER: Enlargement of the prostate gland is a common problem for men in their 70s and older. Sometimes it gets so bad that a man cannot urinate at all or the pressure in the bladder is at risk of damaging the kidney. In those cases, a catheter often is used as a temporizing measure. Unfortunately, a catheter causes inflammation, so it may actually worsen the prostate problem temporarily while still protecting the kidneys. Because of this, the catheter usually needs to be kept in only for about one to two weeks. During this time, medication usually is started to try to reduce prostate size. For most men, a benign (not cancerous) enlarged prostate can be treated with medication -- an alpha blocker, like tamsulosin, sometimes with a second medicine, like finasteride. If that doesn’t work, there are several surgical options. His doctor needs to be sure that the enlarged prostate isn’t cancer. A physical exam and blood tests may answer that question; other times, a biopsy is needed. There is no best treatment for everyone. It depends on how large his prostate is, any other medical problems he may have and the expertise of the doctor treating him. In the United States, the options include a traditional surgery, called a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP); laser-based treatments; other heat-based treatments (microwave, water vapor ablation and radiowave); and even more newer treatments that are less well-studied. In general, medical therapy is worth a try for most men before considering surgery.
An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

“Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. (NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.
Those chosen for the honored position of pallbearer usually include close family or friends, although colleagues of the deceased or anyone else may serve. Corresponding to the six handles on a casket (three on each side), there are six pallbearers, although handles on the front and back sides of the casket allow for two additional people to carry the casket. In addition to considering the person’s relationship to the deceased, physical ability must also be taken into account. If a person is deemed unable to physically participate in the pallbearer’s role, he or she can be designated an “honorary pallbearer.” There is no limit to honorary pallbearers, who can walk in front of, beside, or behind the casket. It’s never easy being the person having to make decisions for a funeral after someone you love passes away. Surround yourself with people who care about you and can help you with whatever need arises. This includes selecting the best pallbearers. If you are interested in learning more about the funeral services KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME offers, please call us today at (585) 346-5401. We serve families at their time of need by providing personalized, compassionate, and professional funeral services. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. I returned to the co-op and happily found that a good Samaritan had returned it to the office, restoring my faith in mankind. Thank you!
Thank you to the Lady Braves volleyball coaches for a great, positive season! And to the parents for organizing a fabulous banquet at the end to celebrate. Everything was great from the photos to the food. Kudos! I lost my credit card while pumping gas at a Canandaigua dairy co-op. Later when I realized my loss,
Once again during a major windstorm, with winds gusting to near 50mph or above, about half the streetlights in town went out. It’s also clear that people need to learn the rules of driving! If you approach an intersection with a traffic signal that’s out, then it’s considered a FOUR WAY STOP. Please don’t just slow down or assume because you’re not on the side street that you have the right of way. Just stop, look, respect other drivers and go on your way again. As a grocery store cashier, I’m frustrated with the majority of customers at check out who stand and watch me lift their filled bags or heavy items into their carts. Not one grocery store chain in Rochester pays its cashiers a living wage, and this is physical, hard work. PLEASE help load your filled bags into your cart if you see them GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The Memorial Day Detachment of the Marine Corps League would like to thank all those people and businesses that donated toys or cash to our Toys for Tots campaign this year. We would also like to thank all the agencies that worked with us to distribute the toys to the children. We collected and distributed almost 5500 toys to approximately 1,600 children in Ontario and Livingston counties. The toys made a huge difference to children who may have otherwise not received a new toy for Christmas. Every child deserves a reason to smile
and be happy at Christmas and your donations made that possible for a lot of children. We thank you again for the great support and look forward to working with you all again next year. Thank you Penny Saver, for all these years of service to our community. I have really enjoyed Sudoku, the crossword and especially the history facts. Thanks again, Norman Craft If ever a beautiful send off to heaven could be for Danny, it happened. To all involved, you know who you are; what wonderful support. Did you not know that you would be expected to bag groceries, and put people’s groceries in the carts when you took the job? If you feel it is such hard work to put groceries in a cart, then you need to go the doctor to get a physical. Don’t try and make the customers who go through your line feel guilty because of part of your job! We all have jobs! Maybe you should get a job where you can sit down, like the toll booth workers.

Thank you so much Avon Lioness Club for your donation to the Avon Hometown Hero Banner program! Because of your generosity we will be able to replace some of the worn banners. We are a volunteer committee trying to hang the flags with limited funds. It is sometimes challenging to keep track of who is active and if a flag should fly, but we try our best. Thanks also for the warm support from the parents who have a son or daughter’s flag hanging. It is a very personal program for us parent volunteers to keep it going. Banner applications can be picked up at the Village and Town offices. Avon Hometown Hero Banner Committee
Anyone who is thinking about home improvements, do your homework first. Check with the BBB, get lots of references, but most importantly get a contract that specifies the amount for each part of the job if it has for example roofing and or fascia and soffit work. We were scammed by a contractor who gave us one price for work with different areas of our house. After he finished one part and was unable to do the rest because of winter coming on, we paid him all but a small portion of the cost. The next year, he wanted three and a half times more for the work than we had verbally agreed to. We tried unsuccessfully in small claims court to get justice because we had no written proof. We learned our lesson.

EOE
(NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic. For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall. To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line. The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your natural Arian leadership qualities make you the person others will follow in tackling that important project. But don’t get so involved in the work that you neglect your personal life. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Aspects favor sorting through your possessions, both at work and at home, to start giving away what you don’t use, don’t need or don’t like. Relax later with someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The issues are not quite as clear as they should be. That’s why you need to avoid getting involved in disputes between colleagues at work or between relatives or personal friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’ll get lots of support from others if you own up to your mistake quickly and include a full and honest explanation. Learn from this experience so that you don’t repeat it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some early confusion over a major move, whether it’s at work or at home. But once you get a full breakdown of what it entails, it should be easier to deal with. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Creating order out of chaos, even in the most untidy spaces, should be no problem for organized Virgos. So go ahead and do it, and then accept praise from impressed colleagues. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Whether it’s for business purposes or just for leisure, a trip might be just what you need right now. You would benefit both from a change of scenery and from meeting new people. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While things generally go well this week, a romantic situation seems to have stalled. But you can restart it if you want to. Then again, maybe this is a chance to reassess the situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A meeting that was promised quite a while back could finally happen. So be sure you’re prepared with everything you’ll need to make your case sound convincing and doable. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace blunder could create a problem down the line unless you deal with it right now to see how and why it happened. Don’t be surprised at what you might learn. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time to re-sort your priorities and see if adjustments are called for. Be honest with yourself as you decide what to keep, what to discard and what to change. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Letting yourself be bathed in the outpouring of love and support from those who care for you will help you get through a difficult period sooner rather than later. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an uncanny gift for reaching out to all people and creating bridges of understanding among them. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD In South Korea, men get to enjoy the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, as women bestow gifts of chocolate on them. In return, a month later men reciprocate with gifts for women on White Day. South Koreans take Valentine’s Day a step further on Black Day, which falls on April 14. This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status.
