FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 2020
Dear Readers: Unprecedented is an understatement for the challenges we are now facing. I'm sure you've had a few moments of "is this really happening?" as I have these last few days. And as we go through these unchartered waters, I hope you can take a few moments to take refuge in our paper to help you stay connected with your community. Our Hometown Announcements, News, Events, our Give & Take column and even our Vibes & Rants will have a special focus on the Covid-19, how you are coping, and, more importantly, we hope it will help you cope. We've always valued our ability to give you news from your local merchants as well as news from your neighbors. Now is an even more important time for us to send you these messages of how we're all evolving and adapting. Our dedicated staff is working hard for you, your community and our community of advertisers. We are committed to delivering the same level of service to our readers and advertisers, but we accept and acknowledge the guidance of the governor and the public health department. Should there be an interruption in delivery, you can find out where you can access our editions at www.gvpennysaver. com. Remember, too, that you can sign up for our E-Edition of the Penny Saver on our website. Be well and continue to enjoy and appreciate our diligence as we bring you the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Lawns can be hearty, but they’re also highly susceptible to damage. Even seemingly harmless things can compromise the integrity of a lawn. Understanding the causes can help homeowners protect their lawns.

THINK ABC’S: AUDIO, BOUNDARIES, CONSISTENCY. Audio: Choose a space that will be less impacted by the noise of daily life. A spare room, bedroom, basement or even corner of the garage if it’s insulated. It is ideal if you can shut the door, but if you cannot, consider “natural boundaries” like walls, furniture and different floors of the home which will help reduce distracting sounds.
Boundaries: Define your workspace and work materials, plainly defining what is offlimits to children. Clear physical space boundaries work best with young children, with a door, room, rug or bookshelf operating as a visual boundary line. Keep breakables out of reach of curious little hands and remember that boundaries often have to be repeated.
Consistency: Do your best to work in the same space at the same times every day. Children

National Award Winning Paper
thrive on routines, and it helps them to act appropriately as they know what to expect, where to be and also importantly, where not to be.
Delays: Be prepared to add in D for Delays every now and then, as well. Changes in routine are challenging for everyone. Be patient with yourself and your children as you navigate this new normal together.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signs a treaty with Russia to buy Alaska for $7 million. Despite the bargain price of roughly 2 cents an acre, the Alaskan purchase was ridiculed as "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's icebox." On March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower is dedicated in Paris in a ceremony presided over by Gustave Eiffel, its designer, and French Prime Minister Pierre Tirard. At 984 feet, the Eiffel Tower remained the world's tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930.
Healthy eating options for seniors “Let food be thy medicine” is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions. For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic. According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful.
On April 1, 1970, President Richard Nixon signs legislation officially banning cigarette ads on television and radio. Nixon, who was an avid pipe smoker, supported the legislation at the increasing insistence of public health advocates.
· Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. See next week’s article for more smart food choices for seniors. On Monday, the 9th of March, my family and I went to Krony’s. We always enjoy the delicious pizza and what I call calzones. Of course, what would Krony’s be without Joey. He simply is the best manager I have ever seen in a restaurant. Joey is just a great all-around person. He goes out of his way to make sure that everything is great. He is always so personable no matter how busy he may
My child is not perfect; no child is. However, when another child threatens to physically assault my child, that is one thing. If you follow through, there will be legal consequences. I will call the police on your child. This is not the 1980’s. Physical assault is a big deal, and if you, as a parent, allow your child to conduct themselves this way, then maybe you need to be investigated as well. I don’t think your child will be a tough guy to the police if and when they get called. That would be just step one in a nightmare GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

be. Joey makes sure to give his customers the attention they need to make them feel like they are family. Of course, Steve (Charlie), is very nice, as well. Joey, thanks for the garlic knots and stay as sweet as you are. In a world where people do not go out of their way to help others, it is delightful to know you.
I’d like to thank my employer, Bristol ID. By implementing a few new procedures and policies, they are doing their best to make it a safe environment during this uncertain time. Big thanks for all the staff of the local grocery stores for supporting our communities at this time!
Hannah Emmick is so wonderful and should be recognized for her caring and helpful spirit. Love that she is willing to help families with water and food. Love her! I emptied my pockets for a man to have meals for legal situation for you and your child. Teach your child to handle situations with class and communication, but I understand for some parents, conflict and police blotter fame is all they know. That inherited trait shines very brightly through your child. Too bad. Last month, I went into the grocery store, and while looking around, I saw a little one in her daddy’s arms. I noticed she had on a real cute dress with a matching hair band. I stopped to say ‘hi’ and left. As I was returning my cart mom, dad (each wearing coats) and their child were also leaving. To my shock, the toddler was still wearing only the light little dress with absolutely nothing else on her, no coat, blanket, etc. If they thought

a week. He went straight across the street to Burger King. Do what you can for others.
While checking out at Wegman’s last Sunday morning, I discovered I had forgotten my wallet. Facing embarrassment, I asked the girl at the checkout if I could it was not that cold enough for their daughter’s health, then why did they bother wearing coats themselves? Wake up parents and use some common sense! At least bring a warm blanket next time! Have you ever heard of pneumonia? I’d like to “rant” about a local corner gas station. call my wife hoping she could rescue me by phone. While on the phone, the girl proceeded to check out my purchases. I asked her to stop, but she told me that the kind man behind me was paying for my goods. I insisted on repaying him, but he said that it was his way of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. One Irishman to another. Thank you, Bill Bolin. I will surely pay it forward. You made my St. Patrick’s Day! Local restaurants - thank you for staying open to feed us. We are grateful!
customer. I exclusively used them even though I knew it was the highest place for prices around and spent $35 to $45 while stopping there and only there three times a week. I liked the two older men in charge. The mechanic, though very good, would make unnecessary comments about me or what I brought in to break the ice or amuse them. Even when they hired a new mechanic, his conversation became unprofessional as well. It hurt my feelings; they should’ve refrained from condescending comments. I tried another gas station, and it was run by all women. They were warm, friendly, talkative, respectful and apologetic when they were busy. I will now give my local business to them!

How to Succeed at
Socially Distancing According to your Zodiac Sign Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19): You love a little competition. Try out a new fitness regimen, like the Couch to 5k program, and plan a future race or marathon. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Your home always looks great, but a little re-decorating never hurt anyone! Pro tip: take pictures of each room on your phone first to get an objective view of what you would like to change. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): That good idea you’ve been sitting on? It’s time to come up with a stellar business plan. Don’t know where to start? Resist the isolating internet this time, and try emailing a local business leader you admire to set up a phone call – they would love to help, and the time to network is now! Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22): You hate the idea of avoiding the people you love, but they understand and really do appreciate your thoughtfulness. Get close instead to the authors that inspire you. Copy out a paragraph you especially love, then give the story your own spin. Have your family do the same, then compare your creations! Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22): This is a time of opportunity for you. The stock market is on sale and you are not afraid to buy! Stay modest and share your passion for finance with the kids in your family by helping them set up virtual investment accounts through online games like Wall Street Survivor. Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): Your desire for organization is finally going to be satisfied! Make things more pinteresting by tapping into your creativity to develop some new DIY storage hacks. Marie Kondo has nothing on you! Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Your naturally social self will have to find expression in more creative ways. Start an initiative focusing on what can be done to help maintain the vitality of the small businesses in your area, like buying gift cards online or over the phone to use later on.

Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help
“flatten the curve” now! Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): Everything is an argument nowadays! By sharpening your own debate skills, you might actually build bridges instead of burning them. Get started with a fun read like Mastering Logical Fallacies (Withey) before turning to the prisoner’s dilemma. Is it time for a career in politics? Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your professional success is borne of your energy and enthusiasm. Channel these traits into refreshing the space around your home, like a garden or deck. It might seem like slow going at first, but “it does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop” (Confucius). Your investment will be rewarded sooner rather than later. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Staying at home for you means expanding your reach! Move out of your comfort zone and organize friends and family to write cards for residents of the local nursing homes. The joy of small, random acts of kindness will spread to all areas of your life. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your bunker is filled with nothing but sheet masks, foie gras and red wine. Good thing, too, because the Metropolitan Opera is offering “Nightly Met Opera Streams” for free every evening at 7:30pm at metopera.org. If you’re fancy and you know it clap your hands! Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20): Now is the time to become the master chef you always knew you were! Make your meal plan, break out the cookbooks and get to it. Remember to take your time and enjoy the process. By offering to safely deliver meals to those in need, your culinary fame will only increase.

For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette.

How to clean when faced with a shortage of supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra essentials — resulting in shortages. Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers.
Variety is the spice of life when it comes to protein sources. Eat different foods to ensure the body gets all of the nutrients it requires.
The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice.
Magic Maze KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE
Hot water and soap The reason hand-washing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen peroxide As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Shanna Butler: Why I Call Honeoye Home By Amanda Dudek
S
hanna Butler and her husband of 13 years, Michael, are happily raising their two children in the town of Honeoye just as her parents, James and Bonnie Sykes did before her, and her grandparents did before them. Shanna has come full circle to relive the best parts of her childhood from the other side as a gift she is giving to her own children. “We moved to Honeoye when I was in the 1st grade,” she shared, noting that her parents wanted to live closer to family. The community was already a familiar one as they would regularly visit Shanna’s paternal grandparents there on the weekends. The wonderful school district was a benefit, too. “My parents volunteered all the time, especially for the school,” Shanna said of her parents who sit on the Board at the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock. “When we moved to Honeoye, my parents jumped full bore into the school. My mom started working as a TA in Special Education and in the community.” Her parents’ involvement had a profound impact on Shanna. “Any community organization my parents could get involved in, they did,” Shanna said. “Anything my mom could get involved in to help kids at Honeoye, she did. Our home became a second home for several kids, and my parents were like their second parents.” Perhaps the most important impact came from James and Bonnie Sykes’ involvement in school theatre. “My mom was the director of the school’s plays,” explained Shanna. “My dad was the major set builder. My brother, sister and I all participated, as well. We ate dinner together every night because we were all involved in the same thing. I was very fortunate.” “My parents were such an important part of my extracurricular activities and things that I loved; they weren’t just spectators,” she continued. “I saw my parents every day all day long. At the end of the day, I could come to what I love – the theatre – and my parents were both there. That really stood out to me.” After graduating in 1998, Shanna decided to study theatre at the University of Buffalo, something of a family tradition, from which she graduated in 2004 Shanna Butler with degrees in musical theatre advocating for kindness! and dance as well as health and human resources. “During that whole time, my sister, brother and I would come back and help with the shows, lighting, hair, makeup, choreography,” shared Shanna. “I stayed very connected with the town and school, even moving back home for a time when I graduated.” Shanna soon met and married Michael Butler, and the two lived elsewhere for a time. It wasn’t long, however, before they found themselves moving to Honeoye. “My parents converted their home into a split level, and we moved in with them,” said Shanna. “I also opened a dance studio.” Much like her mother had several years before, Shanna quickly became involved with her children’s school, a school she knows and loves. “I work as a TA there,” she said. “I wanted to be involved in things at my kids’ school. I liked the small-town feel growing up and was very fortunate because my parents have always been extremely loving and involved in everything. I want that for my kids, too.” Shanna certainly makes many positive contributions. She is the president of the PTA and the dance instructor for several local students. She works in theatrical productions at the school, participates with the Honeoye Community Players group which includes planning the annual Honeoye Hometown Holiday events,

working closely with the school administration to bring new events to the school, participating in her children’s current extracurriculars and much more. “My parents always told me your school is only as good as you make it,” she stated. “I want to be a part of my kids’ education and the town of Honeoye, continuing to form those bonds that were so integral to my growing up here.” Children, as always, remain central to what Shanna does. “Children are my life. I value them so much,” she explained. Shanna recognized that current circumstances could make this a trying time for children and their families. “It is a different and new time for everybody,” she said. Shanna’s message to families today is one of encouragement. “Just be gentle with yourself during this time,” she advised. “Allow yourself to make mistakes and ask questions. Get outside, get some fresh air and do school later. Remember, you are not alone, and you can ask for help. You don’t have to be the best. Just do what you can and live in the moment.” “I love that our community helps and pitches in whenever we can. My kids are seeing this right now,” added Shanna. “This moment is history in the making.”

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An unexpected problem should be handled as quickly as possible so that it doesn’t cause too much of a delay. Someone who knows what you’re facing could provide needed advice. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unsettling situation seems to be taking forever to be resolved. Fortunately, your Bovine aptitude for patience is strong this week, so you’ll be more than able to wait it out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a stand against an uncalled-for situation involving a friend or co-worker isn’t easy, but somehow you’ll rise to the challenge and do it. Rely on advice from someone you trust. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) There are still some questions on all sides that need to be dealt with in order to allow hurt feelings to heal. Get your workplace tasks done early so that you can devote more time to loved ones. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Consider a new spring makeover that will show all you Leos and Leonas in your best light. A new hairdo and some fashionable new clothes can help put a fresh glow on your image. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some stormy, emotional weather can blow up in the workplace when an irate co-worker has strong words for you. But if you believe right is on your side, you’ll be able to ride it out. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Creating more balance in your life is especially important now so that you’re not distracted when you get into projects that will make demands on both your physical and mental energies. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) As much as you enjoy being right when others are not, show your generous side by offering to use what you know to everyone’s benefit. This way, you gain admirers and avoid resentment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week for the Archer to aim at healing relationships. Whether it’s at home, at work or among your friends, get everyone to set things straight and make a fresh start. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although you like things done your way, this is a good time to listen to ideas from others. You might even find yourself agreeing with one or more of their suggestions. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Aspects favor positive action to reclaim your ideas from someone who might want the glory without doing any of the work. Expect to find many people rallying to support you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might feel uneasy about taking that step forward at work or in your private life. But who knows better than you that while treading water keeps you afloat, it doesn’t get you anywhere. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of creating positive attitudes and making people feel good about themselves.
