LOCAL & RELIABLE DUMPSTER RENTAL 585-310-5117 www.expertdumpster.com 248 Route 31 - Macedon, NY
To Julie and her crew at McDonalds in Spencerport: Thanks so much for keeping your customers happy during these times. Love you all from The Coffee Club.
Thank you to local school districts for working tirelessly seven days a week to provide learning activities and support to children and parents. The decision to keep our kids out of school has caused tremendous sadness for teachers. We hoped NYS would allow us to finish our school year face-to-face in class with our kids. Teachers are putting extended time into preparing lessons, creating activities that can connect to curriculum, attending virtual meetings with staff, training themselves on the digital environment, volunteering to pass out food and supplies
so judgmental. Also, to the person complaining about people going out in public, you are out in public as well.
You should not be so judgmental about a person that needs to go to work. They might not have the luxury of being able to stay home. Filing for unemployment is not an option now because of all the people who are out of work. They may have a family they need to feed, a house to pay for, bills to keep the gas and electricity on. People are becoming so nasty anymore. If someone must work, then that is what they must do, if someone must go to the store, do not be rude about what they are buying. There are so many reasons why, and maybe you should not be GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

for families and calling to check in on their students. Thank you teachers! This is not your preferred method of educating our kids, and you should be appreciated for going above and beyond to meet this challenge!
I want to thank the Farmington TOPS for their above and beyond efforts for maintaining COVID-19 precautions and sanitizing. They wipe down every cart after use and have areas for cleaned carts. They wash the carts after they are brought back inside. This is time consuming and a lot of work. There is tape on the floor at registers to help give people the 6ft distancing. Isles and spaces are much more open. They have some dedicated shopping hours for seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Like many other stores, they close early have to
work, March 15th. I am selfemployed and have no income. I cannot work under new Pause order. Also, I have preexisting health issues that prevent me from taking an essential worker job. After many calls to complete an application, I received a call on April 17th. It took 20 minutes for the lady to say that I am approved, and I will get money in a few days, but I must recertify by Sunday. I did so only to be told I cannot recertify because my application is not complete, and that I must call the other number. I have called many times so far and have been hung up on each time after the systems says to hold. If it were not for food pantries, I think a lot of New Yorkers would starve to death! Each day that passes is one day closer to my company going bankrupt.
Shame on you. People put a lot of time and love into the one spot they can go and visit their loved one. If it ever happened to you, how would feel? The grave sites of loved ones are so private and personal to whoever visits, and to think someone would destroy their love and hard work is sad and unbelievable. It is against the law, and you can only hope that no one saw you and will not go to the police with the information. With all that is going on in the world right now, we have people like you doing more destruction to this world in just another way. Good luck sleeping at night I believe if you are going 60 with a clear conscience. mph on a country road, then you I filed my unemployment are speeding yourself. online on the last day of

the store cleaned and stocked. Thank You for your work to help all in fighting this pandemic!
A big Heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in Erin’s 18th birthday car parade on May 3rd. It was an awesome event. In her words, “Best Birthday Ever...Here Come the happy tears!” Erin has Down Syndrome, and all you wonderful people who came out made her day extra special during these difficult times. Special Thanks to Dawn and John who arranged this spectacular event! Be safe and well, The Hurley Family
Many thanks for checking on me and bagging my groceries in the Geneseo Aldi’s parking lot after I was having trouble breathing from wearing a mask in the store. The ER patients are lucky to have a caring nurse like you!
In a time when a pandemic is really bringing out the worst in people, I have noticed one thing at least, which gives everyone a little more enjoyment: more rants! Heartwarming, feel-good positive vibes are nice, but let us face it: the rants are what we all really enjoy. All the media-fueled pandemic panic has turned most people into toilet paper hoarding, OCD busybodies with an irrational fear of grocery stores and an insatiable need to complain, which makes for an invigorating “rants” section. So, thank you, ranters, for putting your annoyance to such good use! Stay home; stay safe. To the person who killed my loving and friendly cat on [local road] on April 29th and left him to die on the side of the road, how cruel of you! I am devastated. I hope you were not texting.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Joint Pain Not Usual Statin Side Effect ---
Annuals, Perennials, Vegetable Plants, Potting Soil, etc. Open 8:30-6:00 Daily Curbside pickup available Call for details
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old white male. I take one 20-mg pravastatin per day to manage my cholesterol. One of the side effects is joint pain. Are you aware of a substitute that does not have this joint pain side effect? -- H.L. ANSWER: Statins are one of the most common medicines used, and although they have relatively few side effects, so many people take them that there are many reported untoward effects. Muscle aches are common. Muscle breakdown is serious and, fortunately, rare. But joint aches are not a common side effect. In the package insert, “arthritis” is listed in less than 1% of people. Of all the statins, pravastatin tends to have relatively few side effects. It is metabolized differently from how the others are, so have a discussion with your doctor about taking a different statin, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor). Lipitor is much more potent than pravastatin (Pravachol), so the dose you will need is likely to be much lower. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion on screening for ovarian cancer in a woman with a family history (in my case, a sister)? One gynecologist stressed an annual ultrasound, while the other discouraged me from doing so. I am worried that if I wait until symptoms develop, the cancer might be pretty advanced. -- W. ANSWER: I really understand why people with increased risk for ovarian cancer are interested in screening. Unfortunately, we still don’t have any screening tests, such as an ultrasound or CA-125 blood test, that are good enough to recommend yet. I hope this changes soon. Promising work is progressing. Consider genetic testing for a familial cancer syndrome, such as BRCA or Lynch syndrome. People with one of these cancer syndromes are at high enough risk that screening may be of benefit, and there are ongoing studies to help identify the best strategy. Speak to your gynecologist about a referral to a genetic counselor. If you test negative for these genetic syndromes, you are at lower risk (but unfortunately, even low-risk women still may get ovarian cancer). You certainly should be vigilant for even mild symptoms of ovarian cancer; these are nonspecific and may include abdominal discomfort, bloating or swelling. Urinary urgency (a sense of needing to get to the bathroom right away) also should prompt a visit to your gynecologist, more so than in people without a family history. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible that when immersed in water, you absorb it through your skin? Whenever I spend more than 30 minutes in the pool, I later have to urinate more than when I don’t spend time in the water. Can the absorbed water travel to kidneys? Can the chemicals added to pool water do some damage? -- E.M. ANSWER: Water is not absorbed to any appreciable effect when the body is immersed. The reason you urinate more may be due to unnoticed swallowing of pool water, which is very common in swimmers. Don’t worry about the chlorine in pool water. The amount of chlorine is similar to or only a bit higher than most tap water, and is not enough to be dangerous. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

SENIOR NEWS LINE
6 ways to prevent falls around the house
By Matilda Charles
Help Fill the Hours With an E-Reader I don't often recommend specific products in this column, but there's one that many of us could use right now: a Kindle. The Kindle is a handheld reading device, also called an e-reader, that holds thousands of books. Books can be downloaded into a Kindle -- both books you buy (or read for free) from Amazon, and free books from your local library. With Amazon's Kindle Unlimited, for $9.99 a month, you can read as many books as you like, or many books are $2.99 or less. For the device itself, consider the Kindle Paperwhite. Go to Amazon and read the reviews, questions and technical specs, such as WiFi versus WiFi+Cellular Connectivity, audio capability and storage size. If you already have a tablet, you can read e-books as well. You'll need an app, available for free on Amazon, if that's where you're going to order books. In the search box on Amazon, type in Kindle app. The biggest difference between reading on a tablet and reading on a Kindle is this: The Kindle has one purpose, which is reading. The screen doesn't have a glare (unlike the shiny glass on a tablet), and you can easily increase the size of the type font. If you want to download free books from your library, either onto a Kindle or a tablet, you can likely get help if you need it. Many libraries are technically closed now (the public can't go in), but staff are still there, some of them specifically to offer technical help. Call to ask for the specific e-reader app they use. Last week I gave you a puzzle to solve and promised the answer: What is the next letter in this sequence? O T T F F S S __ Answer: E ... as in One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight.

Despite all of the potential hazards around a house - from electrical issues to fire hazards to carbon monoxide - the National Home Security Alliance says that falls are the leading cause of death due to home accidents. Falls are responsible for one-third of all home-related fatalities. Although seniors are the group most affected by falls, these types of accidents can affect anyone. A broken bone may be a minor inconvenience for young people, but fractures are more serious for the elderly. As a result, seniors must take measures to protect themselves against falls. These steps can minimize risk at home. 1. Remove tripping hazards. Examine rooms and hallways for potential hazards, such as slippery throw rugs, floorboards that stick up, loose carpeting, or furniture that blocks walking paths. Remedy these hazards as soon as possible. Address loose floorboards and/or place nonslip materials beneath rugs. 2. Install grab bars or railings. Install grab bars in certain locations for extra stability or where someone may need leverage getting up from a seated position. They are particularly helpful near toilets and bathtubs and in stairways and hallways. 3. Stick to sensible shoes. Sensible shoes fit properly and have sturdy, nonskid soles. Avoid walking around in slippers or even in stocking feet, which are much more slippery. 4. Store items within reach. Store items that are used frequently, such as dishes, in easily accessible cabinets and other locations. This prevents having to climb or reach for them. 5. Install more lighting. Poor visibility can contribute to falls. Lighting in hallways, stairways, bathrooms, and bedrooms - even if it is a small night light - can be enough to light the way. 6. Reinforce your home’s exterior. Falls do not only occur inside. Inspect the perimeter of a property for uneven turf, holes or cracked or uneven patches of walkways. Make sure lighting is working at entryways, and check that exterior handrails are secure. Falls can cause serious injury or death, particularly for aging men and women. Simple fixes around the house can make things more secure and reduce the risk for falls. TF206001

CLEVER WAYS TO USE LEFTOVERS CREATE NEW MEALS. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers.

HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. Suggestions from Melanie Marcus, MA, RD, health and nutrition communications manager for Dole Food Company - www.dole.com ●

Marty Wallace Helps Bring “Canandaigua Together” By Amanda Dudek
T
o help slow the spread of COVID-19, many local, independent businesses have temporarily closed their doors. Independent businesses are at the heart of many communities across New York State, including Canandaigua. Marty Wallace, owner of Creative Dimensions Marketing & Design, launched Canandaigua Together to help ensure that her fellow business owners are still here to open when the restrictions lift. “Canandaigua Together is a community group that I started on Facebook right when COVID-19 was starting to hit,” recalled Wallace. “I have a small business that I run, and I have been lucky to be busy enough to continue to make a living.” Nevertheless, Wallace’s first thought was how this would affect everyone in town: especially businesses and families that would lose their jobs. “I don’t want my community to change because of this thing,” she said. “I don’t want these places to go out of business and affect these families and the whole community. When you see your favorite businesses leave and buildings standing empty, it affects everyone.” Wallace began by focusing on local eateries with a gift card campaign kickoff. “We tried to include every single restaurant that falls within the Canandaigua City School tax base for this campaign,” explained Wallace. “We wanted people to buy from multiple businesses.” People and even other businesses bought gift cards and dropped them off directly to Canandaigua City School District which had graciously agreed to help distribute them to families in need. “It was a way to support area families in need as well as these restaurants,” said Wallace. “We collected over 370 gift cards in under two weeks. After it ran in the paper, more people wanted to donate and participate. The district received over 500 gift cards within four weeks.”
Canandaigua Together created an opportunity for the community to support both local businesses and families! “Even though people cannot go out and support businesses the way they may want to, many still want to be able to support local business and order dinner for their families,” observed Wallace. “People were looking for an outlet to help, and with gift cards, they could purchase as many as they wished. A lot of businesses have innovated to stay open, and our community has really supported them.” The response has been very encouraging. “I have received very positive feedback about the group,” said Wallace. “Businesses are grateful for the support and some have told me they’re getting new customers.” Wallace’s page format has definitely helped. “One thing that is unique about this group is that I have been allowing local businesses to post without approval,” she said. “They can promote their business and specials. Also, I post restaurant listings and verify and update information as frequently as I can. Things change so much and are so fluid that it is hard to keep up.” “This group benefits business most when the businesses themselves frequently post their updates,” continued Wallace. “A group page allows those following that group to see posts on the feed more frequently due
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

to the activity level of the group as opposed to maybe a business owner’s Facebook page. If businesses post more frequently, it could boost their business.” Wallace plans to expand Canandaigua Together to include more businesses. “I would like to help other industries such as salons, spas, barber shops and nail salons as well as solopreneurs who don’t get the benefit of a PPP loan,” she said. “I want to do something to help them Marty Wallace, owner of Creative out. I hope that the same Dimensions Marketing & Design logic behind supporting our local eateries extends to other types of businesses, as well. We may do a gift card drive to help boost these businesses before they’re up and running when the restrictions lift. I am open to suggestions!” Marty Wallace has seen a continued increase in the number of people and organizations joining Canandaigua Together. She sees many possibilities for the group. “People can help with mental health and wellness needs, with meals, donations and more,” she said. “I’m starting to see posts from a variety of businesses, and that is what I wanted. We even had links to all the area churches and information about their services early on, which I hope to circle back to soon.” Wallace has been encouraged to see the community come together. “I love seeing the different things people are doing to lift people up and help others,” she said. “Businesses are looking to partner up and make connections with other businesses and non-profits, and people are finding ways to support the entire community.” Marty Wallace encourages the Canandaigua community to support local businesses, saying, “We don’t know how long this thing is going to last. This is a great time to support area businesses and maybe try a restaurant you have never tried or donate to a local charity you’ve been thinking about!” For more information, visit Canandaigua Together on Facebook. MONUMENTAL MEMORIES
Canandaigua: At age 91, Jean passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2020. She was born in Pottsville, PA. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Edward Dembosky. Survived by her daughters, Celeste (Richard) Williams, Barbara (Charles) Braun; her granddaughters, Kristen Williams, Jill Williams, Kara (Aaron) James, and Monica Braun; her brother, Lenny Jukus; along with her great grandchildren, Greyson James, Lena James, Everett James and Evelyn Williams.
Now Open!
Full range of cemetery memorials & services. Many granite stones, colors, shapes & engraving options on display. Friendly, caring & here to help! Proprietors: David & Kathy Cooper (585) 261-0012 5650 County Rd. #41, Farmington, NY 14425
Jean enjoyed taking an active role in her senior community. She was a longtime member of the Livonia Senior Club and the Livingston County Senior of the Year. The only thing that was more important to Jean was her family. Saying Jean was a dedicated, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, certainly is an understatement. Jean loved being with her family and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world, well except for maybe a good potluck. Her love and sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Memorial Day
A private graveside service will take place at Union Cemetery on Big Tree Road in Livonia. To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401

POLL Three Upstate New York regions -- the Mohawk Valley, the Southern Tier and the Finger Lakes regions -- are ready to enter Phase 1 of reopening the state on May 15th. Are we ready?
MOMENTS IN TIME
HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS
The History Channel * On May 21, 1901, Connecticut becomes the first state to limit the speed of motor vehicles to 12 mph in cities and 15 mph on country roads. As late as 1930, a dozen states had no speed limit, while 28 states did not even require a driver’s license.
Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.
• Yes! • No! Poll Ends 05-19-20
Results From 05-12-20 On Monday, May 4th, Governor Cuomo further explained his plans for a regional reopening of New York State. Do you agree that reopening should be based on each region’s data? 54% Absolutely! 18% Yes with limited travel 20% Not without masks required 8% No way! We love hearing from you! Vote and make your voice heard!

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you have a stubborn stain on the driveway or garage floor, try oven cleaner. Spray the spot and cover it (to keep pets out) and then let it sit for several hours. Give it a good scrub and rinse with the hose. It might just do the trick! * “I have a tip for you. When pouring water in your coffee pot, use a 4-inch funnel by placing it in the tank. Helps from spilling water. Pour slowly!” -- P.T. in Illinois
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

* Three ways to honor veterans on Memorial Day: pause for the National Moment of Remembrance (3 p.m. local time), a minute-long pause to remember those who lost their lives in service to our country; donate flowers or place flowers on the graves of veterans in your local cemetery; listen to the stories of veterans through StoryCorps’ oral history project (storycorps. org/discover/military-voices). * “Here’s a recipe tip from my brother’s man cave: Take a can of beer and mix it with a cup of barbecue sauce. Add a couple drops of hot sauce if you’re feeling spicy. Use the mix to marinate chicken thighs for several hours before slapping them on the grill. He says the beer helps the chicken absorb the flavor, and he must be right, because it’s so yummy.” -- E.D. in Arkansas * Clean hairbrushes and combs by soaking them in a baking soda/water solution. Put them bristles down in a large cup and add the solution. Don’t do this to wood handle brushes. * “Here’s a convenient way to measure oil and not have to wash an inconveniently shaped measuring cup: Label a glass jar with marks for common kitchen measurements: 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4 and 1 cup. So easy.” -- J.K. in Vermont

Sheltering Pets During a Disaster DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just moved to a new part of the country, where natural disasters like floods are more frequent than I’m used to. When checking out available emergency services, I found out that there is no emergency shelter nearby that allows pets. What can I do? -- Charlie B., via email DEAR CHARLIE: Knowing ahead of time what emergency services are available in a disaster is an excellent move. You won’t have as many unpleasant surprises during the high stress of a natural disaster. But it is a bummer that the local disaster shelter doesn’t accept pets. First, locate the nearest disaster shelter that does allow you to shelter with your pet. Develop a contingency plan for evacuating to this shelter, if possible. Another option is to identify pet-friendly hotels within an hour or two of your home; if you need to leave for more than a day, these may be an option. Next, find out if there are designated shelters just for pets during or after a natural disaster. You wouldn’t be able to stay with your pets, but they would be safe. Third, get engaged with the local government and animal shelter. Talk to your new veterinarian, too. Find out if there’s a local emergency management office and call them. Are any plans in place for taking care of pets in a disaster? If not, ask for steps to be taken to include this contingency. During California’s wildfires in 2018, there were very few facilities just for animals, and no shelters allowed them. The need was so great that empty strip malls were repurposed to care for pets and abandoned animals. Urge local government to create a plan now, before a disaster, so all pets in the area will have a safe place to stay.

Immediate Opening for a Property/Leasing Manager – Western NY
HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be a bit shaken by a friend’s request. But before the Lamb leaps to conclusions, insist on a full explanation. You still might say no, but at least you’ll know what you’re saying no to. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Seeing red over those nasty remarks by someone with an ax to grind? Of course you are. So get out there and give your supporters the facts they need to get the truth out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A changing situation should get you to reassess your vacation plans and make any adjustments as soon as possible. And don’t fret -- the change most likely will turn out for the better. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t put off dealing with any negative feelings that might be left over from a recent confrontation. The sooner all is resolved, the sooner you can move forward with fewer complications. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Leos and Leonas might feel the urge to redecorate their dens, and that can turn into a good opportunity to strengthen family ties by putting the whole pride to work to make it happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Look for the most efficient way to get a job done quickly and well. Taking more time than you need to make it look more challenging is a short-sighted move you might regret later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A pesky problem should be dealt with immediately so you can put your time and effort into something more important. Someone from your past could have significant news for you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A workplace situation becomes a lot more bothersome than you’d expected. Be careful not to be pulled into all that anger. Look for support among others who also want to avoid trouble. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Cheer up, lonely lovers, wherever you are. Just when you thought you’d been deleted from Cupid’s database, the chubby cherub proves that’s just not so. Congratulations. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A casual relationship could take a more serious turn. Are you ready for it? Your stars say you are. Paired Sea Goats also will find a renewed richness in their relationships. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Meeting a collaborator with new ideas seems to be a dream come true. But for both your sakes, be sure all your legal i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed before you start working together. PISCES (February 19 to March 21) A romantic overture flatters the usually unflappable Fish. But since it’s a sincere from-the-heart gesture, go ahead and enjoy it. A minor health problem responds well to treatment. BORN THIS WEEK: You have the warm heart of a Taurean and the sensitivity of a Gemini. You would make a wonderful leader. So go ahead: Run for office. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.

Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.
