The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

Hollerhorn Distilling & Hand-On Lotion Team Up to Meet Need By Amanda Dudek

W

ith the advent of COVID-19 in the United States, several local distilleries began to manufacture sanitizer to meet an overwhelming need. This has increased its availability, helping ensure the safety of healthcare workers, essential workers and local communities. For Karl Neubauer of Hollerhorn Distilling in Naples, working with Hand-On Lotion and doing their part to meet this need just made sense. “I am friends with Hayna, the founder of Hand-On Lotion, and we were already talking about making soap,” said Karl Neubauer, owner and founder of Hollerhorn Distilling. “Then, we were given the formula and permission to make sanitizer. Now, Hollerhorn Distilling creates the sanitizer, and On-Hand Lotion supplies our bottles and labels.”

The Neubauer family at Hollerhorn Distilling! (From left to right) Karl Neubauer, Melissa Neubauer, Marnie Lersch (staff ), Chloe Lauthan-Green (staff ), Frazey Neubauer (daughter), and Phoebe Neubauer (daughter) “We had to give away all of the vodka we had recently made and just started to distill and make sanitizer,” said Neubauer. “We gave sanitizer to the local ambulance crew, hospitals and all of our first responders locally. We have also supplied the Apothecary, doctors’ offices, the elderly, pharmacies and others. We even provided sanitizer to our local Meals on Wheels organization. We have received a lot of letters from those to whom we donated.” Hollerhorn began creating sanitizer in mid-March, and Neubauer said they are just now starting to catch up with the demand. “We have been bottling about 10,000 bottles a week,” he said. “We are also friends with Black Botton Distilling, and we have been helping them bottle their sanitizer because Black Button is set up for a larger volume than we are.” Hollerhorn has received requests from all over the country, including places in Florida, Maine, Connecticut and even California. For the Neubauers, however, the need struck closer to home. “My sister-in-law works at Thompson,” he said. “I can’t imagine being a doctor or a nurse right now. We supplied her staff and crew with sanitizer.” Neubauers parents were also involved in meeting an urgent need. “Both of my parents ski, and the Hunt Hollow Ski Club donated many pairs of ski goggles to a hospital in New Jersey help protect the eyes of staff,” Neubauer explained. “The staff was overwhelmed and brought to tears. You have to be protected when you are doing things like intubating.” When asked how creating sanitizer is different from creating beverages, Neubauer replied, “We are using grain, making vodka and rectifying it, creating Ethyl not Isopropyl alcohol. However, the biggest difference is that we have to denature the sanitizer. The denaturing agent we use, called BitterX, makes it taste absolutely awful. This is a very serious and important step because children often have access to sanitizer, and we do not want them to ingest it.” Unlike alcoholic beverages, sanitizer has a very high proof at about twice the strength of their beverage counterparts. While this is

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

precisely what makes it potent, making it effective to kill germs and viruses, it also makes it very dangerous if ingested. The sanitizer is also produced with peroxide to kill any possible spores and glycerin to create a viscosity which better remains on the skin, both of which can make one Hollerhorn Distilling and On-Hand sick if consumed. It is, Lotion Sanitizer however, safe and effective if used as directed. “All distilleries have been given the same guidelines and formula and must register their product with the FDA,” stated Neubauer. Even though the process is different and the demand for quantity can be exhausting, Neubauer and his family are pleased their familyrun business can help during this time. “It has been really great,” said Neubauer. “It was very overwhelming, but I think now people feel like they have the tools they need to protect themselves.” Their supportive community really made a difference in Hollerhorn Distilling’s efforts. “Early on, when people first heard that we were donating sanitizer, we had several people send us donations,” said Neubauer. “It is really nice to feel supported. The community in this area is an incredible group of people who care about each other, and we are super thankful to everyone who donated and helped to offset our costs, especially when we were donating. We feel very fortunate.” “We are grateful to be a part of the community, and we are happy to help in whatever way we can,” he continued. “People are amazing. Their generosity is humbling. We are seeing that across our nation, too. We all step up when there is a need, doing small acts of kindness and helping our neighbors.” Neubauer plans to continue making sanitizer while there is a need. “We spend our weekends down here bottling,” he said. “Being able to have sanitizer with you and quickly sanitize-that is huge. It makes people feel so much better.” Hollerhorn Distilling currently sells its sanitizer in a variety of sizes including a convenient, two-ounce bottle. Hollerhorn Distilling is a full farm-to-table restaurant and craft bar. For more information, visit www.hollerhorn.com. Enjoy this article? ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. And they, in turn, reach out to complete the circle. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served. Page 15

SENIOR NEWS LINE

When

By Matilda Charles

Are we bored yet?

Being bored isn’t good, especially for seniors. We need to keep our brain cells active, even if we can’t get out of the house for any mental stimulation due to the coronavirus. And we need to find ways to move each day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes at a time, to keep our muscles strong. Look at YouTube.com for mild in-place exercises for seniors. Go online to find a kids’ basketball hoop and soft ball you can hang over the door. Look for a dartboard with magnetic darts. If you have an old Nintendo Wii console, hook it up and get some exercise with the bowling and tennis. If you have an indoor hobby, call your closest store and ask if they have curbside pickup or can mail supplies to you. Put “online craft tutorials” in your internet browser for new ideas. Tune up your guitar and order new strings. Find your old piano books if you have a piano. To keep your brain stretched, if you get a newspaper, do the puzzles, even the ones you normally don’t try. Go online for other puzzles you can print out or complete online. Go to puzzles.usatoday.com for a wide variety of online games. With the crossword puzzles you can choose your skill level (hints versus no hints). Use your keyboard to type in each letter. Try jigsaw puzzles, spelling games, backgammon (play against an opponent or the computer) or mahjong. Also look at Boatload Puzzles (www.boatloadpuzzles.com) for 40,000 crossword puzzles. For real brain stretchers look to Merriam-Webster (www.merriam-webster. com/word-games) or AARP (games.aarp.org). For short-term memory games, look at BrainCurls.com. Meanwhile, here’s a puzzle for you. What is the next letter in this sequence? O T T F F S S __ The answer will be at the end of my next column.

Communication becomes difficult… Trouble communicating with others can be a symptom of various disorders. Difficulty conveying words or emotions can be a condition of autism spectrum disorder, but quite frequently it occurs when a neurological injury affects the portion of the brain responsible for language. The National Aphasia Association states that aphasia is an impairment of language that affects the comprehension or the production of speech as well as the ability to read and write. Aphasia results from an injury to the brain, including head trauma, brain tumors, infections, and stroke. The Cleveland Clinic notes a person with aphasia may experience difficulty speaking, writing, reading, and understanding language. Impairments can range from mild to very severe (nearly impossible to communicate). While aphasia may only affect one area of communication, usually limitations occur across many areas. One of the more common symptoms of aphasia is word-finding issues. This can be characterized by challenges remembering the names of people, events or things. Sometimes an individual may not be able to think of the word he or she wants to say. In other instances, that person may say the wrong word entirely, such as using “rope” for the word “ball.” The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association also states that it is common for someone with aphasia to switch sounds in words, like “wishdasher” for “dishwasher.” Often sentences are difficult to come by, and single words may be easier. Trouble communicating also extends to a person with aphasia having challenges understanding what others are saying, particularly when they speak fast or in long sentences. The situation may be exacerbated when it is noisy or a person is in a group setting. Aphasia can affect anyone. However, it is more common in those who are middle-aged and older. The NAA says roughly 180,000 people are diagnosed with aphasia each year. Even though brain injury is a primary cause of aphasia, it also can create other language-related issues, such as weakness in the muscles that control the face or mouth or an inability to move the lips or tongue in the right way to make sounds. People with aphasia can benefit from working with a speech-language pathologist as early as possible. This professional can present many strategies to help manage deficits or potentially return some measure of communication. Augmentative and alternative communication, such as using images or a computer to tell what a person wants, may be options in more severe cases of aphasia. Aphasia affects many people and can rob them of the ability to communicate effectively without intervention. TF206030

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS The Reader A 2017 survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that women read more than men. Women read an average of 19.8 minutes per day, which can make a Mother’s Day focused on Mom’s love of books an ideal and unique way to spend the day. Kids can write Mom their own books, and Dad can help put them together. Dads can visit rare bookstores and look for original copies of Mom’s favorite books that she might not find elsewhere.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The average human body contains enough iron to make a 3-inch-long nail. It also contains enough fat to produce seven bars of soap.

A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts. ~Washington Irving Mother is a name held sacred By most mortals of the earth; It means great love and sacrifice From the very day of birth, A love that’s so full of beauty, So tender, so very true! Something, seemingly, from Heaven That has come to me and you. There’s no love so understanding And so faithful to the end As a Mother’s love—God bless her!— That to us our Lord did send. ~Gertrude Tooley Buckingham, “Mother” (1940s)

If you have a friend who loves to send you gifs or endless bitmojis, you might want to have your chuckle, then delete. These image files take up much more space than a text message. * “Baking soda can have a whitening effect on some fabrics and is a good alternative for items that might be sensitive to the harshness of bleach in the washing machine. It’s fantastic for musty items as well. Add a cup of baking soda to a load of towels, then add a cup of vinegar to the rinse water.” -- T.H. in Kansas

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

“Have You Ever Smoked?” --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question that I’d love to see answered in your column sometime. My husband recently had major surgery. Before the surgery, they asked if he has ever smoked. (Husband is 77.) He answered that when he was 9, he smoked a cigarette. He is now in the computer as an ex-smoker, and the nurse told us she is “required by law” to provide him with information on quitting. When physicians ask, “Have you ever smoked?” do they really want to hear about one cigarette, smoked almost 70 years ago? Is this meaningful information, in medical terms? -- S.S. ANSWER: There are very important reasons to know a person’s smoking history, especially when someone is about to undergo surgery. Current smokers should know that quitting well before surgery can reduce risks of surgical complications. The anesthesiologist can be extra-vigilant for breathing issues. Some of these points are valid for ex-smokers who have recently quit or who were very heavy smokers. Of course, one cigarette at age 9 is meaningless, and anytime I hear “required by law” I wonder if it’s really true. In this case, I doubt it: Why give ex-smokers information on quitting? It makes no sense. Primary care providers like me ask about smoking because a significant history of smoking increases heart disease risk, so I might be more likely to recommend treatment to reduce that risk (for example, in a person with elevated blood pressure or cholesterol who otherwise doesn’t quite meet criteria for drug treatment). Also, people who smoked more than 1 pack per day for 30 years, or the equivalent, should have a discussion about whether screening for lung cancer is appropriate. Finally, it’s easier to answer if you have never been a smoker. Some people who smoke socially don’t consider themselves smokers but would still benefit from advice to stop. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I took a sleep study and slept on my back all night because I was wired up and couldn’t sleep on my side. After a couple of hours, I was told that I have moderate sleep apnea. I snore when I’m on my back, but not when I’m on my side. Do you think I really have sleep apnea? -- T.M. ANSWER: Obstructive sleep apnea very often goes unrecognized. It is caused by the soft tissue in the neck obstructing the airway; the muscles relax while you are asleep, closing the airway. This is indeed much more likely to happen when lying on the back (we use the anatomical term “supine”), and generations of spouses have learned that turning a snorer on the side is a good way to get him or her to quit snoring. Snoring is caused by the very same process that leads to sleep apnea; in fact, snoring is a significant risk factor, with up to a third of snorers having the condition. I believe the sleep study. While I am sure you would have demonstrated less obstruction if you could sleep on your side, you still are likely to have some obstruction during the night, especially since we frequently change position while sleeping without knowing it. However, there are many different treatments for sleep apnea, and you should talk with your doctor about which is right for you. You need not jump to the most aggressive treatments. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Cooped Up Toddlers Keep Tormenting Pets

MONUMENTAL MEMORIES

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toddlers will not stop tormenting our pets! They chase the cat and pull his tail; they dive-bomb the dog and scare her every time she lays down for a nap. I’m tired of chasing after them and trying to stop them. What else can I do? Lock the pets in another room? -– Susanna Y., Ogden, Utah

Call about Consignments www.AuctionZip.com

DEAR SUSANNA: Let me ask you this: Why should the pets be punished every time your toddlers misbehave? Your dog should be able to nap peacefully in her own doggie bed, and the cat should be able to sit quietly at the window. That’s the ideal, anyway. I know it’s difficult, especially since all of us are cooped up right now. But, consider that toddlers tend to react just as well to a punishment/reward system as most dogs (and some cats) do, if not more so. Make it clear that your kids are not to torment the pets -- and that if they do, there will be consequences. As to the consequences: What are their favorite things to do? Play with specific toys? Watch certain Netflix Kids cartoons? Eat candy? They may be very young, but threatening to (temporarily) remove one of their favorite activities or snacks can be effective. And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true time out. I wish I had more advice to give you. Chasing around toddlers is truly exhausting. Just try to be firm and make it clear that it’s wrong for them to torment the pets. We’ll all be able to get out of the house soon.

Many people give heartfelt gifts on Mother’s Day to express their love for the mothers in their lives. The perfect gift may focus on Mom’s interests and the things that make her truly happy.

The MacDonald family have made beautiful masks for our family and many other home school families like us! A big shout out and lots of prayers for them! Let us hope this ends soon! I want to thank my neighbors in the Hillsboro Cove area in Webster. My husband and I take our nightly walk and recently came across the most awesome window decorations. The neon lights & positive message was just what the doctor ordered! What a great idea! You have made us look forward to our walks! I am so grateful for the dedicated work of school employees and am thoroughly satisfied with how my tax dollars have been spent during the building closure.

I agree with the person who wrote how there are those who defiantly disobey and go out and who do not do the social distancing to boot. How about when and if they get the coronavirus, they waive their right to a ventilator so that some other poor soul can have use of it. They put all the first responders and those in the medical profession at risk. Some people would not care about others and just want to do what they want to do, unless it bit them in the you know where. They would be the first one to boohoo if they were to get sick. Too late then! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

That is indeed great advice. I must admit that sometimes I am guilty of picking up items, and then not buying them. I usually must do that to look at the expiration dates on an item. If the date is not good, it has to go back on the shelf, but in the times we are living in, I wholeheartedly agree that we need to be careful about such things, and I will make a conservative effort to think twice before doing so, although I don’t want to buy food that has already expired. I, for one, wonder why more than one person goes out shopping. I go out by myself and do the grocery shopping for my family. At least, I have that right. I also wonder why some have their adult children drop by while the rest of us obey the restrictions. Just want to reiterate in the post of 4-3-20: if you see someone begging for money for food, yes, they are drug addicts. My son was one

Thank you to every school employee, in every district, for providing the outstanding effort and creativity required to make distance learning work. Teachers are providing instruction in a new format, administrators working tirelessly to provide resources, counselors checking in and sharing information, coaches developing workouts, Secretaries getting work to kids and back to teachers, tech departments sharing resources, custodians thoroughly cleaning, food service and transportation getting meals out, and students for continuing to value education. School buildings are closed, but everyone continues to work overtime. Thank you all!

Yet in the midst of it, I have seen much love and kindness being spread around. I want to thank local businesses, community groups, county boards, and individuals who have reached out to essential workers during this time to encourage us. Thank you for the meals, cards, yard signs, gifts, and much more that you have done to support and encourage me and my coworkers. As a healthcare worker, it has been my privilege to serve the families in our communities as I care for their elderly loved ones during this uncertain time. May the Lord bless you all with the peace that passes all understanding, which comes through Jesus Christ. - Anna Kranz, Livonia, NY

These past few weeks have brought our communities concern, anxiety, and hardship. of them and has told us this. The money is for drugs. There are many food kitchens in Rochester. If you feel the need to help, bring them a meal from McDonald’s, buy them a bus pass to get to a food kitchen, give them some warm clothes (even though they might sell them). Never give them money.

not pack them well in those little bins, and on windy days all their recyclable garbage blows all over into the streets and people’s lawns for others to have to clean up . Please be respectable and pack your trash in tightly. With the virus going on, others should not have to pick up your trash. Keep our country clean!

During our daily walks on [local road] in [local town], it’s amazing to see the amount of garbage that is thrown out of vehicles as they drive down our road in and around the area, including cans, bottles, restaurant trash, etc. Someone is throwing empty single shot bottles of whiskey out their car window. Every day, there seems to be a new one the road. Can you please stop throwing your garbage out the car window? Thank you.

I am curious how the writer who was upset that people are still going out, going to markets knows this? The writer even overheard a woman who said she was not staying home. How did you hear this if you are staying home?

Do the recyclables really get recycled? I was informed they do not. Problem with them is people who put their recyclables out do

According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption. EMPLOYMENT

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS

ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Divide your responsibilities. Allow family members to tackle some chores or other household duties so it will free up more time to spend together.

Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more. A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.

HOW FAMILIES CAN CONFRONT

Remote Learning

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Ask what relocation packages cover. Relocation packages vary from company to company. The Allied Survey found that 54 percent of companies that offered such packages covered moving expenses, while 21 percent gave new hires a lump sum of money to use as they deemed necessary. One in five companies even sponsored trips to search for homes. Adults who are offered relocation packages should get the specifics so they can start creating moving budgets.

Remote learning requires the cooperation of school staff and also parents and guardians. Patience is necessary, and parents and

educators may need to completely transform their daily schedules. The following tips can be an asset as students continue to navigate remote learning. KEEP A SCHEDULE. It’s easy to begin to sleep late and fall out of routine when not required to go to a school building. Families should make scheduling a priority, which can help students stay on top of lessons and complete their assignments on time.

ET Precision Optics, Inc. 33 Curlew St. Rochester, NY 14606 (585) 254-2560

ASK QUESTIONS. Everyone is learning as they go, and further clarification may be needed. Students should email or chat with teachers if they don’t understand an assignment or are unsure about instructions. Teachers may be able to clearly model a math problem or explain a concept via video chat for students who need help.
