DEAR JAMES: Rehoming fees are a fact of life for private pet placements, but $650 to simply adopt a pet is unreasonably steep. That isn’t to say that rehoming fees are a bad thing. A reasonable rehoming fee can prevent a pet from being adopted by people with bad intentions, who can’t financially care for a pet, or who are impulsively adopting a cute little dog that they might abandon at the first hiccup in behavior. The flip side is someone abusing the rehoming fee for personal profit. That person may claim that the fee offsets their costs of caring for the pet, but when the rehoming fee far outstrips the cost of adopting from a shelter, it’s time to proceed with caution. Find out what the local shelter charges to adopt a pet and ask online what average rehoming fees are for your area. If you’re interested in the dog, contact the offerer and find out as many details as possible about its breed, temperament, health and the environment it lives in. Do not send any money beforehand. You need to meet both them and the dog in person, and no money should change hands until both sides agree (in writing, ideally) to the rehoming. Further, if they are truly concerned for the dog’s welfare, they will have questions for you -- maybe even an application -- to make sure you are genuinely adopting the dog and will be a good owner.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Looking for the perfect gift for the object of your affection? How about a toilet seat? Don’t laugh -- that’s what Ben Affleck gave Jennifer Lopez when the two were a hot item. Of course, this particular “throne” cost $105,000 and was covered in diamonds, rubies and sapphires! * Mr. and Mrs. Curry, of New York City, got married inside a 120,000-gallon shark tank. The bride wore a white wetsuit and the groom wore black, saying their “I do’s” while circled by different types of sharks and eels. Both were experienced divers but had to broadcast their vows to the wedding officiant, family and friends, since (unsurprisingly) none of them possessed equal nerve to enter the tank.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In a private Facebook group I belong to, someone is offering a pet for adoption, saying it belonged to their recently deceased mother-in-law. They want a $650 fee for “rehoming” the pet, because they say it has AKC registration. Is this a legitimate fee? It seems awfully steep. -- James in Burlington, Vermont

DID YOU KNOW? Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR Establish a bar setup Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt.

PAVING & SEALING

A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.

151 S. Main St., Canandaigua, NY MOMENTS IN TIME * On June 27, 1939, one of the most famous scenes in movie history is filmed -- Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara parting in “Gone with the Wind.” Director Victor Fleming also shot the scene using the alternate line, “Frankly, my dear, I just don’t care,” in case the film censors objected to the word “damn.” The censors approved the movie but fined producer David O. Selznick $5,000 for including the curse. (The History Channel)

Victor Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Amy DiPrima Shares Victorious Vision By Amanda Dudek

I

n communities like Victor, challenges arise to be met and conquered. Perhaps no greater challenge has appeared in recent years than that of the current coronavirus pandemic and the resulting shutdown which has affected communities, businesses, and families across our nation. Still, with smart planning and an eye to the future, Victor Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Amy DiPrima believes Victor can yet emerge triumphant. “Our community has had to reorganize how we go about business now, including our town,” said DiPrima. “We have had to reorganize departments and pinch pennies as we work to bring the economy back to where it was before COVID-19. Many jobs have been lost, and we are helping students who no longer have school lunches. The food cupboard was even having a lot of trouble buying food because people couldn’t buy what they needed in bulk.” The Chamber stepped in to help. “One thing we did do as the Chamber was a gift bag, a Victor care package,” explained DiPrima. “We collected swag and menus and made 250 bags. Then we handed them out drive thru style, despite the snow, in Mead Square Park. We also collected a huge amount of food and money for the food bank. We saw really strong support, a huge community push that warmed my heart.” Local businesses, which have really had a push to be there for everyone during this time have also felt the support. DiPrima, co-owner of Prima Pop, observed that many of her customers are trying to tip, overpay, buy gift cards, and doing what they can to boost the local economy. Victor friends and neighbors continue to come through. “Everyone has been banding together and realizing we are all in this,” DiPrima shared. “The outpouring of support from Victor and Victor businesses has been just phenomenal.” She is counting on this strengthened unity to support their September festival: Hang Around Victor Day. Many festivals have been cancelled, and we are one of the few that “Many

Prima Pop donated lots of delicious popcorn to the food pantry in Victor! is still happening this year,” stated DiPrima. Hang Around Victor Day will take place in town on and around Main Street and is set to include several Main Street businesses. “We will have an artisan area, vendors for a market area, a farm market area, and a food area. We are going to try a children’s area, but we are still figuring out the best way to be safe with expected germs.” Preparation for this year’s Hang Around Victor Day has already involved Victor’s schools, including Superintendent Dr. Timothy Terranova, businesses, and others. “What I am trying to do is to bridge a long-standing gap,” explained DiPrima. “We are not just businesses, schools, politicians and so on. Everyone works together and shares in the success. We are all one Victor, and we are Victorious.” DiPrima says there will be frequent sanitizing of tables and food areas, sanitizer at each station and vendor, and overall vigilance regarding health protocols. She is also excited about a new festival feature being launched this year. “For the first time, we are going to have a beer and wine section with bands in Mead Square Park,” she said. “Constellation will be hosting this adult only tent.” The response has been positive. “We are getting a lot of support

Amy DiPrima, Executive Director of the Victor Chamber of Commerce from the town and village to do this,” shared DiPrima. “Everyone wants to do something fun, successful and safe, so we need to create that environment. We are really growing together now, and everyone is feeling the impact and the unity it is creating.” The festival is just one of the Chamber’s planned events. “We will also be holding a job expo through Finger Lakes Community College,” shared DiPrima. “We are also working with Kathy Rayburn and the Local Development Corporation to make Victor’s Spooktacular, created by Prima Pop, bigger and better than ever this October.” “There are new ways for our Chamber to exist and support, share resources and information, and help business owners,” she continued. “We are recreating a sense of what a Chamber really is and means. I want to ensure that value is there for our members.” “I am just passionate about Victor!” exclaimed DiPrima. “My fiancé and Prima Pop co-owner, Mike Gardula, my three boys and his three boys, all go out and do everything we can to keep our town strong. Summer is an important time for many local businesses, and I encourage you to support them and share about them on social media to spread the word.” “You could also volunteer with the Chamber to help us make these important events happen,” said DiPrima. “Victor is doing a great job staying positive, and neighbors are lifting each other up and supporting each other. We want these events to be successful for everyone in our community.

Estate planning is an important part of managing one’s finances. A qualified attorney who specializes in estate planning can help people write their wills and, if necessary, establish trusts that can help surviving loved ones in the wake of their death.

by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

WHO DECIDES

If a person dies without having made their funeral and burial preferences legally known, the decision rests with the nearest relative. If the next-of-kin is unavailable or unable to make the decision, the next of kin hierarchy is followed, until someone is found. This line of individuals, who must be 18 years old or older, proceeds downward from spouse/domestic partner, to children, parents, siblings, authorized guardian, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, grandparents, aunts and uncles, first cousins, great-grandchildren of grandparents, second cousins, and lastly, a fiduciary (a legally appointed trustee). Some states allow a close friend who is acquainted with the deceasedís wishes to qualify as next of kin if no one else is able or available.

Is Your Computer Old and Slow? Our specialists provide repairs for hardware or software failure, component replacement, virus removal, cleaning and much more!

If a loved one is seriously ill and expected to die in a matter of days or weeks, consider making funeral arrangements in advance. Preparing ahead of time puts you in control and allows you to explore all your options. It will make your meeting with a funeral director more productive. Please call KEVIN W. LOCAL & RELIABLE DUMPSTER RENTAL 585-310-5117 www.expertdumpster.com 248 Route 31 - Macedon, NY

A few weeks ago, I was at Walmart in Batavia going through the checkout line, and my card would not register. The kind women behind me just inserted her card and paid for my groceries. I just want to thank her for her generosity and kindness. Thank you! I would like to thank Carrie DiCarlo from Perry Pet in Livonia Center for her graciousness during the loss of my pet dog, Abby. She was very kind and thoughtful during the whole process. She also sent a very nice card with a very nice sentiment. It is truly appreciated and touched my heart. It meant a lot to me. Many thanks, Cheri I would like to thank the person who turned in my debit card at the Dollar General in Livonia.

Last evening, our neighbor had eleven cars lined up along his driveway. We watched as unmasked guests walked into his home. Our Governor has put COVID-19 restrictions in place. It seems that this neighbor and his guests have other ideas. I wonder what the majority of people would think of this behavior. At the grocery store this morning, 5/14, thank you so much for stopping to point me in the right direction whilst I was pushing a stroller with one hand, the wheels turned the wrong way, and it began to move towards the

“enter” side. I had stopped and was attempting to convince the thing to go in the right direction, when you so kindly assumed that I could not read the “exit” sign or see the big orange road cones. Whatever would I do without people like you to take time out of their busy day to point their judgmental finger in the same direction as the arrow on the “exit” sign that’s right in front of my face so that I know which way to go? You can now rest easy knowing you saved lives today. Thank you, social distance warrior. You’re a hero. In my town, nearly everyone is taking COVID-19 precautions, and I’m fine with people wearing masks everywhere they go. However, there is a social network platform, and the people on there are in tinfoil hat mode. At one point, someone illegally took an illegal picture of some minors hanging at a park. They

It was truly appreciated and very honest of you. Many thanks and well wishes to you. A grateful citizen Thank you, Ontario County ARC, for bringing your clients out into nature and leaving painted kindness rocks along trails in powder Mills Park. The artwork and messages are beautiful. I want to thank the angel of a lady who was able to catch my dog on Boughton Rd in Bloomfield on Sunday morning June 21st. My car wouldn’t start, and I was trying to get my dog into a friend’s car as it was hot out. He got scared and bolted from the Boughton Park parking lot and started running down the street. I ran after him, but he was paying no attention to me. She stopped and was able to grab him. What an angel she was! I can’t thank you enough!

proceeded to post it and make such a fuss over them that the town decided to close all the parks. This is a whole new level of stupid, as no one would have gone to the park any ways. To the paranoid people who took and posted the picture, taking pictures of minors without consent by their legal guardian, let alone posting that picture on the internet, is illegal. For future reference, please refrain from criminal activity during bouts of stircraze. I am so sick of seeing how many terrified people are complaining about others not wearing masks. I served my country. I made sacrifices for your liberty and opportunity. Seeing how you discard that liberty without a thought makes me sick. I am free to choose mask or no mask, test or no test, vaccine, or no vaccine. My freedom is not bound by your fear. Dying is not too high a price to pay for the liberty and prosperity that will be my children’s

I would like to thank the LeRoy Village Police Department. We appreciate all that you’ve done. I cannot express how amazing you have been to our community! From stopping by a lemonade stand to showing up with snacks for a drivein movie, to turning on the sirens for a kid passing by, we thank you! A shoutout to the small businesses who have made this time a little more fun for our kids. Paint kits, doughnut and cookie frosting kits, wood flower projects, pizza making kits and more were a huge hit with so many! Thank you for thinking out of the box. We love supporting you! Thank you to our community for making our Graduating Seniors feel special during this crazy year! The banners, yard signs, parades, and adopt-a-senior programs have made them feel so honored. Congratulations Graduates!

inheritance. If you don’t like it, you stay home! The COVID-19 lock down has found many of us struggling financially. Perhaps when this is over, we should all take the time to look at our household budgets. Did you have 60 or even 30 days of cash set aside for a rainy day? Ask yourself do you really need the newest cell phone, the largest flat screen TV, a satellite antenna with those extra pay-per-view channels? Did the local car dealer make you feel so happy and proud to buy the biggest SUV they sold for an extra $49 per month for another 365 days? Maybe the next time the government tells you to sit home for eight weeks with a mask on your face, you can afford to pay for the necessities of life. In the meantime, hide behind your stash of toilet paper when the landlord comes looking for the rent. In God We Trust; the rest pay Cash. Stop complaining.

At-Home Allergy Shots? The Risk Is Too High --DEAR DR. ROACH: After giving myself allergy shots at home for years, my allergy doctor’s group has decided that it’s too dangerous for patients to do this anymore. The allergy practice will no longer send a vial unless you can prove the shot will be given in a medical facility. Even if you are a nurse or doctor yourself, you still must prove that the shot will be given in a medical facility! Of course, there is a charge per shot if you drive across town to have the allergy practice’s nurse give it. Not long after getting this notice, I read an article about a local child who has improved an insulin injection device. After the alteration, several more doses could be extracted. The article also mentioned children being able to give themselves insulin shots at school! This is such an obvious money grab. How can it be safe for children to give themselves insulin at school but too dangerous for adults to give themselves shots at home? Do you know any reason for this change of policy for giving shots other than docs who can’t get more patients, so they bleed the ones they have dry? -- P.S. ANSWER: Insulin therapy is very different from allergy shots. Insulin is routinely given at home, work and school, and is very safe. The difference with an allergy shot is that you are getting a substance you are known to be allergic to. Comparatively, there is a significant risk of an allergic reaction. Only 3% to 5% of people getting allergy immunotherapy will have a systemic reaction, and only 1 out of 5,000 shots or so will require epinephrine. That might not sound like a high risk, but for a busy allergy clinic, that means about one person per month. The epinephrine is used to both treat and prevent life-threatening reactions. The guidelines from allergy experts clearly state that injections must be given under qualified medical supervision. Your doctor’s group was not following the standard of care before. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you mentioned that your smartwatch warns you every hour to stand up. Is this a good idea? What else is it good for? -- D.K. ANSWER: The evidence that standing periodically has health benefits is fair. One study showed that when people did lightintensity activity (such as walking) for two minutes a day instead of sitting, premature death rates were reduced. Prolonged sitting is associated with heart disease, diabetes and overall cancer rates. The evidence isn’t definitive, but it’s suggestive enough that I do get up and walk around (when I can) when my watch reminds me that I’ve been sitting for a long time. It’s not 100% clear that exercise trackers like pedometers and more advanced devices, such as a smartwatch, increase activity for everyone. It clearly does motivate me. I think it’s a personal decision that needs to be made based on whether you need more exercise (nearly everyone would benefit) and whether it would be motivating. I will say that, for many people, the social aspects of it do get some people to exercise more than they would have otherwise. Some devices let you see your friends’ activity and engage in friendly competition and support. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TURN YOUR SUMMER VACATION INTO A STAYCATION by Samantha Clayton, certified personal trainer (NAPSI) — For many people, social distancing brings concern about summer plans. In previous years, summertime was when families planned their vacations. The kids would be out of school, the weather could be fantastic, and the days are longer— allowing optimal time to venture to new places, catch some sun and spend more time with friends and families. Since you may have already been spending a lot more time with your family then you ever imagined due to coronavirus outbreak, you may be looking for ways to keep your family entertained. Between possibly working from home, managing your kids’ schoolwork and maintaining a functioning household, this time probably hasn’t felt much like a vacation. Social distancing guidelines are likely to remain in effect in many places during the summer. Activities and entertainment options, lodging, and dining will be affected. The good news is, you really don’t have to totally give up on enjoying the summer at home with your family. Here are some tips to make your staycation exciting for the whole family:

HONEOYE CENTRAL SCHOOL

Fit Focused Days Plan hiking trips or long walks or bike rides close to home. Enjoy nearby parks and take time to look over the architecture in your neighborhood. A quick Google search of interesting facts can help you to plan what you want to go to see. Being a tourist in your own community will help you have a greater appreciation for the place. Challenge your kids to identify certain plants, landmarks or wildlife when you’re out walking. It will make the walks more engaging. Having prizes helps with motivation, too. Additionally, backyard games can be a blast—sprinklers, hula hoops and jump rope are things kids love.

is currently seeking to hire a

Full-Time Cleaner Preference will be given to candidates with experience. Willing to train qualified and serious applicants. Full-time employment includes health and dental insurance, paid holidays, and paid vacation time. Serious inquiries only.

Embrace The Farmers Markets A trip to a farmers market is not just a treat, it’s a great way to shop locally. Many of them have adopted social distancing guidelines, so they can be safe for family outings. These markets usually have beautiful fresh and seasonal options to explore, and perhaps find some fascinating new fruits and vegetables. Also, getting the kids involved in selecting ingredients for your meals may help spark their interest in healthier eating. Breaking your usual grocery shopping routine by browsing the stalls in beautiful weather can help spark a vacation vibe. Create Your Own At-Home Retreats With a little planning, you can make your own backyard or home feel like an enchanting vacation spot. For a spa weekend, buy or make your favorite products, and set up time to relax and treat yourself. Turn off all your tech distractions, set up a space outside or in a quiet room. You can even make spa water by cutting up some cucumber or fruit to flavor the water. Consider creating your own yoga retreat. Turn to your favorite online trainer, set up your mat in a designated space, light some candles or incense, and be sure to practice daily, with relaxing music. It’s all about being creative. Travel With Your Cooking With travel on the back burner, consider themed cooking nights to help transport your taste buds to any destination. It can be really fun to make drinks, shakes and meals with ingredients from places that are on your future travel list. Enjoy a nice Italian spritzer with your pasta one night, try cooking a beautiful curry meal or ordering take-out from a restaurant you’ve never tried before. Take it a step further and print out some fun-facts you can find online or rent a movie about the particular culture you’ll be indulging in that night; it’s a great opportunity for your family to learn about other cultures through food.

GREAT PART-TIME JOBS FOR RETIREES Teaching: Retirees can also put their professional experience to work in the classroom. Inquire about teaching opportunities at a nearby university or even the local high school. Such opportunities may only be available on a volunteer basis, but some might pay part-time salaries or small stipends. Either way, many retirees find that working with young people helps them stay young, and passing on lessons learned to younger generations can provide a strong sense of purpose.

Finally, take time to plan out your staycation in the same way you would with a travel vacation. Having an itinerary of what you want to do helps to prevent the lazy, do-nothing blues from taking over. A vacation is about rest, relaxation, discovery and recreation—all of those things can be accomplished right where you are. Studies have shown a positive correlation between taking vacation time and an overall feeling of well-being, so no matter what’s on your itinerary, make sure to thoroughly enjoy yourself.
