Call 585.554.6909 STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Gardening is widely considered as relaxing a hobby as it is rewarding. Although gardening when temperatures are mild, such as in spring and fall, can be relaxing, gardening can be much more physically taxing and even dangerous when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer. Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Narrow the gap between indoor and outdoor temperatures. The DOE notes that the smaller the difference between the temperature indoors and outside the lower cooling costs will be. While it may be tempting to set thermostats to room temperature (68 F) on days when temperatures reach 90 F or above, that’s an enormous temperature gap that will result in a high energy bill. Instead, the DOE recommends setting thermostats to 78 F whenever possible.

As more people are vaccinated and as we continue to resume our everyday activities post-COVID, should people be required to continue to wear masks in airports and on airplanes?

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Why the U.S. Ban on Dog Imports?

#5280659

• Yes, absolutely! • Only if not vaccinated • No way!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been working for months to purchase a purebred dog located in Ukraine. Today, the transaction was put on hold by the breeder, who said that dog imports are being banned by the U.S. What is going on? -- Nadiya in NYC DEAR NADIYA: What happened is that dogs are being imported into the U.S. with rabies certificates that are fraudulent. After at least 450 imported dogs were found to have fake certificates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took action in June and temporarily banned the import of dogs from more than 100 countries* with a high rabies risk, including Ukraine, for at least one year. According to the CDC’s official notice, in 2020 it identified a significant increase in the number of imported dogs that were denied entry into the U.S. from high-risk countries. Due to reduced flight schedules, dogs denied entry are facing longer wait times to be returned to their country of departure, leading to illness and even death. Why did the number of fraudulent rabies certificates rise so quickly? In a word, the pandemic. During lockdown, demand for dogs (and cats) soared. Worried about the risk of animals being abandoned when their owners went back to the office, many shelters drastically raised fees and other requirements for adoption. Demand for imported dogs rose. Unfortunately, there are no options for those who intend to purchase or adopt a dog from one of these countries. If you try to import the dog anyway, or even hand-carry it across the border, it will be denied entry and shipped back home at your expense. It’s a bummer, but necessary to reduce the risk of rabies spreading in the U.S. *For a map showing banned countries, go to www.statista.com and search for “CDC bans dog imports.” To read the official notice, go to www.cdc.gov and search for “high-risk dog ban.”

CONTEMPLATING RETIREMENT? First…MAKE THESE LISTS! TIPS FROM LOCAL WRITER, DP DUNN

R

etirement: that goal of every hard-working American. Time to do—what exactly? Before you dive into that great unknown, give a bit of forethought, dare to dream and contemplate, cogitate and ruminate, even! Then, make your retirement lists. Lists are powerful tools. They help us to organize, prioritize, and even discard. Writing a list can be cathartic; lists get ‘stuff ’ like emotions or ideas out of our head, heart and mind, and onto paper where they can be handled differently. Writing makes ideas visual and real. Our daily work provides us with structure, money (always useful), socialization, connection, and purpose. It comes at a cost, however. When working, you do the bidding of others, like your boss, your clients, even your customers. You are paid for your time, ideas, labor, creativity, insight, and skill. It sounds great, but sometimes we desire change, renewal, and feel the need to explore. In retirement, you can become who you want to be or need to be beyond the context and confines of your career. As you contemplate that great retirement change, consider starting with a few lists:

List 1: Things you will miss A paycheck? Meaningful work? The structure of a daily routine? Intelligent conversation with smart, educated, well-read and interesting people? Solving problems and fixing things or processes? Free coffee? When you leave, there will be a void in your life. By identifying the ‘good stuff ’ at work, you can identify other ways to fill those pleasant voids. It is easier that you might think. Be creative. Ask other like-minded people you know who have already retired.

List 2: Things you don’t like This is easy. Simply list every aspect that causes you grief, worry, heartburn and headaches. No names or titles, please. ‘Jeff ’ in accounting might not think highly of you, either! This shouldn’t be personal; note activities, situations, or tasks that stress you to your limit, things that make you sad, angry or crazy. What hurts your spirit or does not fit with who you are or who you want to be? What holds you back or gets in your way? Write. Get it all out. There, that feels better!

List 3: Life events you have missed A wise person once wrote: “Show me your calendar, and I’ll show you your priorities.” While your relationship with your employer has been mutually beneficial, you have likely forfeited or delayed some of your life in exchange. You were compensated for your time, but what events were sacrificed? Your work calendar shows your work priorities. Now, look for the priorities that are missing from your calendar; see what is not there. First, list specific events you have missed because of work such as your child’s first words or first steps, a family reunion, a destination wedding, opportunities to sit quietly and contemplate, changes to create or renew important relationships or friendships. Maybe there are more events and experiences you’ve missed. Write them down and get these losses out of your head and your heart. Next, look for common themes within your listed items like Family & Friends, Travel, Exploration, Spirituality and Faith, Fitness, Organization, Downsizing, or the Pursuit of Hobbies and Pastimes. Now, you are ready to plan.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Each list has a purpose! List 1: The first list shows you what you need to retain post-retirement. A financial planner will help you analyze the cash-flow while addressing your missing paycheck and your insurance concerns. Social interaction: You may need to add some new friends. You can meet with the old friends from work when they’re available. Try not to gloat; they don’’t like that! Where will you meet new friends? And what about your ‘meaningful work and purpose’ goals? Considering your skills and knowledge developed during your career, perhaps you can volunteer or teach others to do what gave you joy and purpose for so many years. List 2: What is the purpose of the second list? That list is for six months after you leave. You might start thinking, “Gee, it wasn’t so bad. Maybe I should have stayed longer.” Stop! Pull out list number two and re-read it. Take a deep breath and feel affirmed in your decision. List 3: List number three is your roadmap. Look at what you missed and focus on filling your remaining time addressing those voids and deficits. You’re likely still young and healthy, interesting, and interested. Go forth! Do! Pursue what you wanted to when you didn’t have the time. Explore! Grow! Forethought and planning (Some may say daydreaming!) can help us prepare for change while growing in the right directions at the right times. At the same time, this roadmap is not cast in stone; modify it and make it your own. Time’s short, so prepare and live your best life. Mr. Dunn retired in 2020 mid-pandemic. Paraplegic Battles UTIs ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a paraplegic due to a spinal cord injury back in 1979. I battle one UTI after another, and I am becoming immune to most antibiotics. Why the constant infections? My urologist just ordered a CT scan, but seems uninterested in me as a patient. I am sick of being sick. I straight catheterize four times a day usually. It’s getting very hard for them to match the antibiotic to the culture. At times the infections are so bad I get “foggy headed.” These times I am in misery. The last time I went to the ER hoping it wasn’t sepsis. They gave me antibiotics. I can’t keep running to the ER. My copays are too much. Maybe I need a doctor who specializes in working with people who have a spinal cord injury. -- Anon. ANSWER: Regular drainage of the bladder with a “straight catheter” is the most effective way to reduce the risk of urine infections in a person with a spinal cord injury, but it is not perfect. People may still get bacteria in the bladder. Although it may be worthwhile to review your catheterization technique with an expert, it’s possible to get infections even with perfect technique. You haven’t become immune to antibiotics, but the frequent use of powerful antibiotics will make you colonized with resistant bacteria, so that if you do get an infection, it’s likely to be with a difficult-totreat organism. The CT scan is a good idea to see whether there is an anatomic reason for recurrent (or persistent) infections. I am disappointed to hear your urologist does not seem to be doing his or her best for you. Recurrent infections are dangerous. Becoming foggy headed is a sign of serious systemic infection, and sepsis (a dysfunctional body response to infection) is life-threatening. Some people take antibiotics to prevent infection. Often, these are rotated to reduce resistance. A urologist experienced in spinal cord injury, perhaps in consultation with an infectious disease doctor, would be ideal. ***

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

No, Life Has Not Returned to Normal A recent survey concluded that we seniors are ready to go back out into the world, to resume our former pre-COVID activities. I suspect the poll questions weren’t asked of seniors in my part of New England. We are not, for the most part, ready to get back to what we were doing before. We learned to talk to family and friends on internet conferences and managed the software quite well. We explored new hobbies with materials that arrived by mail since we weren’t going into stores. We mastered complicated recipes (with ingredients picked up curbside at the grocery), and we renewed our interest in chess and other games, playing online. We explored parts of our state we hadn’t seen before because we could safely drive around -- as long as we didn’t get out of the car. Our senior center is still holding the men’s Monday lunch in the parking lot, socially distanced, of course. The French language class still isn’t meeting because it didn’t work out well trying to hear and speak French while spaced out across the parking lot with cars going by. The art classes are still done remotely because it’s difficult to do watercolor painting outside with the breeze blowing, and no one is ready to go inside the building. A few fast phone calls revealed that, no, the American Legion hall still isn’t open. The auto dealership is trying to restrict potential buyers to test driving only three cars because each one has to be sanitized after customers take one out for a spin. The deli on Main Street is still taking orders only at the front window and doesn’t know when it will open for indoor eating. If a poll were done here, I suspect it would conclude that, no, we’re not ready to come out yet. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

US Flag Code

Bravo, Teachers! I would like to recognize Alexander CSD teachers, essential staffing and all employees for the amazing job done during a challenging and uncertain school year resulting from COVID. Without your dedication and flexibility, our children would have suffered. Your efforts do not go unrecognized by the community. Thank you for all you do for the children! E. W.

Regarding a recently published article regarding proper display of the flag— I have some additional information to add to that. The flag should not be displayed at night unless lighted, nor should it be displayed during “inclement weather.” The flag should be properly disposed of when damaged or worn out (contact your Legion for details). The entire code is available on the American Legion website. Also, no drawings should be done on the US flag. This, to me, includes the superimposing of various images, animals, sports insignia, human portraits, etc. Also, personally, the use of the flag as a political statement and changing the colors on the flag is disrespectful. This is not the flag for which millions have made the ultimate sacrifice. If one wishes to show support for another organization, all of them have insignia that could be displayed on a plain banner.

Petty Rant Shame on you for your rant against our law enforcement officers. Those parking laws are in place in case of a fire or terrorism incident, and it doesn’t matter if the building is vacant. Do you think our police officers can choose which laws to enforce and when to enforce them? It’s all about public safety. Be a good citizen and follow the rules.

Neighbor’s Noisy Truck In the [local] area we have a neighbor with his very large truck that he revs out loudly on purpose and goes down the road all hours of the day and night. It’s extremely loud, and we are all afraid someone will get hit eventually. Everyone complains, but it just goes on and on. Please be considerate of your neighbors. The village is not the place for the noise or speeding, especially when you are by a school.

Hamlin Post Office I want to say that I appreciate the attention and service I get from the employees when I go in for my stamps. Sherry was kind enough to put my stamps in a large plastic sleeve to keep my five books of stamps together. It really came in handy with the large number of stamps that I purchased. With all that is going on in the world we live in, it is always nice to be treated kindly. Hamlin Post Office is the best!
