The American Legion Act Passed President Trump signed the bill known as The American Legion Act on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, that declares the United States of America has been in a state of war since Dec. 7, 1941. Veterans previously ineligible are now eligible. The American Legion sought the Declaration as a way to honor approximately 1,600 U.S. service members who were killed or wounded in hostile operations during periods that were not previously recognized as times of war by the federal government. Today’s passage of the Legion Act is a victory for veterans who until now have not had their service to our nation fully recognized.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Oct. 1, 1890, an act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, paving the way for generations of nature lovers. Yosemite’s natural beauty is immortalized in the stark black-and-white landscape photographs of Ansel Adams (1902-1984). On Oct. 2, 1780, British Major John Andre is hanged as a spy by U.S. military forces in New York. Andre, an accomplice of Benedict Arnold, was captured with incriminating papers in his boot. The papers revealed Arnold’s offer to surrender West Point to the British for a bribe of 20,000 pounds. On Oct. 3, 1863, expressing gratitude for a Union Army victory at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln announces that the nation will celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 26, and on the fourth Thursday of every November thereafter.

Games that can challenge the brain Games are as popular as ever. For evidence of that, one need look no further than his or her own smartphone. The number of hours people spend playing games on their smartphones might surprise even the most ardent players. According to the mobile research firm Apptopia, between May and July of 2018, mobile users spent a whopping 3.38 billion hours playing the wildly popular strategy game “Clash of Clans,” making it the most popular smartphone game in the world during that time period. Games might be seen as a way to unwind, but some games can potentially do more than merely provide a way to escape the daily grind. Brain teasers, riddles and crossword puzzles are just some of the types of games that can help people engage and challenge their brains while still providing a bit of escapism. A Healthier Michigan, which is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan and aims to help locals adopt healthier lifestyles, notes that the following exercises, games and platforms can help men and women challenge their brains in unique ways. • BrainHQ: According to Posit Science, which created the system, BrainHQ (www.aarp.brainhq.com) is a system of training the brain that was developed by neuroscientists and other brain experts. The BrainHQ platform includes various brain training exercises with hundreds of levels that can help people improve their brain function, including memory and retention. • Writing in the Stars: Similar to a crossword puzzle, this game provides a list of nine words to users, who must then find the six words that connect to from a six-point star before they can move on the next level. Available at www.happy-neuron.com, Writing in the Stars aims to help users improve their logical reasoning. • Private Eye: With a goal of helping users improve their focused attention and concentration, Private Eye (www.happy-neuron.com) asks players to peruse a grid full of intricate layers and symbols in an effort to find the item that does not belong. • Braingle: With more than 200,000 members, Braingle (www. braingle.com) is a popular online community where users can go to access brain teasers, trivia quizzes, IQ tests, and more. Users even rank the games, allowing novices to find games that might help them hone certain skills or ease their way into challenging their brains with games. Millions of people across the globe play games every day. Though players often play games to have fun, they might be helping their brains without even knowing it.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson “My daughter is a softball player, and here’s what her coach suggested as an ice pack for when she gets home: unpopped popcorn kernels. They get cold but not uncomfortably so, they can easily mold to any body part and they don’t melt into a mess. If you needed to, you can empty them out into a pan and stick your hand or foot into it. Be sure to label them so you don’t try to pop them later!” -- L.D. in Georgia GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I do this when I am transporting dip to a potluck. Vegetable oil has no flavor, really, and it’s just enough to let the lid come off without taking the top layer with it.” -- J.A. in Florida

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson Here’s a great way to make waterproof matches for camping. Light a candle or use a wax melt in a warmer. When the wax is good and melted, get a box of matches ready (preferably strike-anywhere matches, but strike on box works, too). Dip each match head into the melted wax and set aside on a piece of parchment until dry and hardened. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A big Thank You to everyone who answered my notice in the Free Stuff Needed section of the GVPS. Your kindness is unbelievable and I hope you receive a blessing in return. Thanks to the GVPS for providing the space for this service. A lot of needs are met, and good stuff gets We went to the Arts Festival this weekend in our beautiful Victorian town, and there were more dogs there than vendors. Why is it that even though all the ads for the festival requested (not suggested) you leave Fido at home, people decided it didn’t mean them? No dogs mean no dogs. Most of the dogs were panting and looked hot and the hot pavement couldn’t have been good for their feet. Please people, for their safety leave them home. On 8/14, I had items to purchase or on which to make an offer. I left to get gas, and when I returned, a large dog cage was taken with no payment left. The sign I left on it said, “Make offer, live on Co Rd 41.” To the person who took it, you GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Genesee Valley Penny Saver, thank you for all your hard work. A huge thank you to the lady who saw our pontoon boat covers fly off while we were towing on Rt. 5&20 between Lima and East Avon. don’t have to clean up after you. You may think this is a free service for our town but we pay our town taxes. Take care of your own garbage and recycling, please. We are one of two houses left that have no access to city water and have a failing well. The town keeps brushing our concerns and complaints off! We have also paid for the service fees related to said water that we don’t have! I am a retired scientist and engineer, environmentalist, and solar energy proponent. When I put out yard signs in support of a project, they were stolen within days. Apparently, the rabid opposition, besides being opinionated and misinformed, also has an uncivil aspect.

Page 22

Should I be scared, or just disappointed in their shameful behavior? To that entitled person who patronizes every store: we service workers do not care that you are running late and must have said item right now, right away. You overbooked your own schedule. That is not our problem. Keep yourself on time. We are paid minimum wage, meaning if they could pay us less, they would. By the way, it’s not our fault that the store is out of a product you need. Deal with it like an adult. Thanks.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. ~Hugh Macmillan

Light Hill in Canandaigua, New York, is looking for volunteers interested in caring for terminally ill residents, their families and loved ones. We provide end of life care training that includes seven classroom sessions (approximately 6 weeks to complete) followed by hands-on “shadowing” prior to caring for our resident guests. Light Hill is a two-bed comfort care home, full of light and positive energy. Our home is an alternative to a nursing home, hospital, or home care. Our primary focus is providing a peaceful quality existence at endof-life guided by the hospice philosophy. Our goal is to support our resident guests as they experience physical, emotional and spiritual changes, as well as support their loved ones. Classes will start mid-October and end before Thanksgiving. If you have a caring heart and are interested in learning more about Light Hill, please contact: Volunteer Coordinator, Crystal Martin, at Lighthillvolco@ gmail.com, 585-393-1311 or 585-734-7651. Canandaigua Library Celebrates 160 Years! By Maria Bucci

2

019 marks Wood Library’s 160th anniversary. The Canandaiguabased community library was first conceived by a small group of enterprising Canandaigua citizens who set out to establish a membership-funded book collection and reading room. The reading room opened on May 5, 1859 and was located in Canandaigua’s City Hall. The founding members named the library in memory of William Wood, a local philanthropist who, among other things, was known for establishing libraries on merchant ships. By 1861, funds were raised, books purchased, rules and regulations drafted, and a catalog listing of books printed. Wood Library was incorporated on April 17, 1868 for the “purpose of establishing and maintaining a public library, reading room and museum with a historical department and for other literary and scientific purposes.” Frederick F. Thompson served as the library association’s first president. Later, with leadership from Miss Isaphine Granger, Wood Library was incorporated as a free public library on June 24, 1896.

Teen Field Trip - Wood Library hosted a field trip to the Susan B. Anthony House and Mt. Hope Cemetery for Canandaigua teens to explore important figures in suffragist history.

Orchestra, Sonnenberg Gardens, Onanda Park, Kershaw Park, and Empire Passes which grant entry into New York State Parks.

Hundreds of children from the Canandaigua City School District visit Wood Library during the month of June to learn about all the fun things going on at the library during the summer.

“Wood Library has changed dramatically since those early days as a members-only reading room in City Hall,” states Executive Director Jenny Goodemote. “Yet, in all those years, Wood Library has always been a gateway to knowledge and information, and helped people connect with the world and each other. One of our benefactors once told me that his life was completely transformed for the better as a result of the time he spent in Wood Library as a young boy. His experience is not unlike that of the teens who hang out at the library after school today. Wood Library has played and will continue to play an important role in people’s lives as it is an essential and accessible resource for learning, literacy, and personal growth.” Today, Wood Library is a full-service public library that is chartered by New York State to serve everyone who resides in the Canandaigua City School District. Its mission is to provide exceptional public library service in a comfortable and safe environment where people can satisfy their curiosity, stimulate their imaginations, and connect to the local community and to the world. “Wood Library is a community-focused library, which means we offer a full-range of traditional public library services that people need and want, such as children’s story times, reference services, books, and access to the Internet,” reports Goodemote. “I like to surprise people by telling them about all of the things they can get with their library card that they may not think of.” For example, Wood Library offers themed wellness kits which give people an opportunity to try out a fitness regime from home before spending money on expensive equipment or a class at a gym. Hand therapy, yoga, Zumba, walking for health, and meditation are a few examples of the types of activities that people can explore when borrowing a wellness kit. Library patrons can also check out a VIP (Very Important Places) pass for discounted admission to the Genesee Country Museum, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, Rochester Philharmonic

In an age when it is assumed that everyone is connected through the internet, Wood Library is filling a need by providing WiFi hotspots to Canandaigua City School District students who don’t have internet at home. “This service ensures that these students have the same access to learning tools as their peers, helps them complete homework assignments on time, and communicate with teachers,” reports Goodemote. “We also offer a limited number of WiFi hotspots to the public for up to three weeks at a time.” The library also offers online learning tools and powerful databases that can be accessed with a Wood Library card. “Some of these are even accessible from home,” explains Goodemote. “People can learn a language, download an eBook, research family history, and learn new job skills.” Some of the newest items that people can borrow from Wood Library are outdoor family games. Bocce ball, pickle ball, tennis, ring toss, bean bag toss, and a washer game can be checked out for up to seven days a time. “We are also laying the groundwork for a home delivery service for the elderly and those who are homebound,” explains Goodemote. “We are committed to reaching everyone in our service area, even if they cannot get to the library.” For more information about Wood Library, its services and programs, go to woodlibrary.org or call 585-394-1381. HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE

ONLINE POLL: Comments made this past week by environmental youth activist, Greta Thunberg, have ignited passionate conversations regarding environmental policies. How concerned are you about the United States' environmental initiatives?

Eat before and after a workout. Early risers who like to exercise first thing in the morning might develop muscle fatigue if they workout on empty stomachs. The HSS recommends eating a light meal or snack roughly two hours before exercising, and then eating again within one hour of finishing a workout. Doing so provides some energy during a workout and helps muscles broken down during exercise refuel and repair.

COPD now, but last spring she had bronchitis and was off work for a week. When she went back to work, she didn’t feel good, and her doctor told her that she had pneumonia in both lungs and wondered why she went back to work. She still takes cough syrup under her doctor’s orders. -- N.P. ANSWER: Getting someone to quit smoking is a challenge, but perhaps some advice I can give your daughter might help. The first piece of advice is that a cough necessitating cough syrup on a routine basis indeed might be a sign of COPD. There are two major forms of COPD: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The definition of “chronic bronchitis” is a productive cough for three months in each of two successive years. The second piece of advice is that quitting before there are serious symptoms is the best time to quit. Although the body has some ability to recover from the effects of chronic cigarette smoke, there is a degree of permanent damage in long-term smokers. Quitting greatly slows down the rate of ongoing damage to the lungs and reduces the risk of having lifelong symptoms of shortness of breath and cough. Quitting smoking will do more good than any cough syrup can. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Does taking Norvasc or any calcium channel blocker reduce or destroy the calcium in the bones, eventually causing osteoporosis? -- E.G. ANSWER: No. Calcium channel blockers, like amlodipine (Norvasc), work on cells in the heart and blood vessels, controlling the flow of calcium into the cell. Calcium in the cell is one of the regulators of smooth muscle cells, and for Norvasc in particular, that means its major effect is on blood vessels, causing them to open up and reduce blood pressure, and thus the amount of work the heart needs to do. Calcium in bone is used structurally, where it combines with other ions to form hydroxyapatite, the mineral that keeps bones hard and strong. The mechanism for calcium entry into bone cells is very different. Calcium channel blockers do not affect mineralization of the bone, nor do they increase the risk for osteoporosis. One group found that people on calcium channel blockers may have a slightly higher risk of fractures; however, that was thought to be due to an increased number of falls, especially in the elderly. Physicians need to take care not to use too much medication, especially ones that dilate blood vessels, as they can increase risk of dizziness and falls. ***

DR. ROACH WRITES: Many readers kindly shared their

recommendations about preventing underarm odor, and the most commonly mentioned, by far, was crystal mineral salt deodorants, of which there are several brands. Several people made their own deodorants by mixing baking powder, cornstarch and olive or coconut oil. Other people noted using antibacterial soaps or cleansing products containing the same products we use in the operating room, such as chlorhexidine and hexachlorophene. A product with zinc oxide and talc helped one reader. Finally, more than a few people noted that removing all underarm hair was necessary to successfully get rid of odor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An upcoming trip could create some problems with your schedule unless you tie up as many loose ends as possible before you head out the door. Ask a friend or colleague to help you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Being eager to start a new project is fine. However, moving ahead without knowing what actually will be expected of you could cause a problem down the line. Ask some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting through some recent challenges in good shape might give you a false sense of security. Don’t relax your guard. You need to be prepared for what else could happen. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still advised, even though you think you’re as prepared as you need to be. Keep in mind that change is in your aspect, and you should expect the unexpected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s gift of persuasion helps you get your points across, even to some of your most negative naysayers. An old friend might seek you out for some advice. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Being sure of your convictions is fine. But leave some room for dissenting opinions. You might learn something that could help you avoid a possible problem later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting good legal advice on what your rights actually are is the first step toward resolving that pesky problem so that it doesn’t re-emerge at a later date. Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Longtime relationships work well this week, whether they’re personal or professional. It’s a good time to invite new friends and colleagues into your life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week to do the research that will help you uncover those irrefutable facts that can back you up on your new venture when you most need it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Change is an important factor in your aspect this week and could affect something you might have thought was immune to any sort of adjustment or “alteration.” AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Being asked to share someone’s deeply personal confidence might be flattering, but accepting could be unwise. Decline gracefully but firmly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) As wise as you are, you could still be misled by someone who seems to be sincere but might not be. Take more time to assess the situation before making any commitments. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to face challenges that others might try to avoid, and by so doing, you set an example of courage for all.
