TIPS FOR NEGOTIATING WITH CONTRACTORS

Do your homework. Getting the best price typically require shopping around and not settling on the first bid. Experts recommend getting at least three estimates on the same job - and be sure to let each contractor know that you are soliciting multiple bids. This alone may entice a specific contractor to give you his or her best offer up front. Avoid simply choosing the lowest bid. Look at quality of work, reputation and reviews. If you like a costly contractor more than another, see if that contractor is willing to match a lower bid to win the job.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Rake leaves as they start to fall more heavily. Once leaves begin to fall more heavily, rake them up and add them to compost piles. The resource GardeningKnowHow.com notes composting leaves creates a dark, rich and organic matter that can add nutrients to garden soil and loosen compacted earth. Leaving leaves on the lawn once they start to fall in great numbers makes it hard for grass blades to breathe, and the leaves can block moisture from reaching the soil, which needs water to maintain strong roots. In addition, potentially harmful pathogens can breed on damp leaves left on a lawn, and such bacteria can cause significant damage to the turf over time.

Applying too much mulch can adversely affect lawns, plants and soil. In addition, excessive application can cause decay and make lawns and plants more vulnerable to disease. Homeowners uncertain about when and how to apply mulch in the fall can consult with a lawn care professional to devise a plan that ensures their lawns and gardens hold up against winter weather. Herbal Product Can Help Soothe

Gastro-intestinal Symptoms

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had gastroparesis for many years. About two years ago, it led to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (which I once read about in your column). I worked with a dietician for several months. One of the treatments she suggested was an herbal product called Iberogast. The combination of herbs helps the stomach to empty quicker. I use it each night before bed (as part of a 12-hour fast), or whenever I have overeaten and feel bad. It has been most helpful for me. Iberogast is available online. -- L.E.

ANSWER: Iberogast is a combination of nine medicinal plant extracts. Studies in Germany and Austria, where it is most commonly used, have shown the medication to be more effective than the placebo (and about as effective as one common prescription medication) in the treatment of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel disease. The medication has generally been regarded as safe, but there are rare cases of liver injury associated with this medication, with at least one of which eventually requiring a liver transplantation.

All medications -- whether prescription or overthe-counter, natural or synthetic -- have the potential for harm. Iberogast is pretty safe, with just a handful of bad outcomes in its 50 years of use, involving millions of doses, but it can still cause rare and severe adverse effects. Iberogast is worth considering in people whose symptoms have not been successfully treated with other therapies.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NERVE INJURIES

What are the symptoms of peripheral nerve injuries? The Mayo Clinic notes that symptoms of peripheral nerve injuries, including pain, range from mild to severe. Severe symptoms can seriously limit individuals’ ability to perform and engage in daily activities. Symptoms differ depending on which nerve fibers are affected. Motor nerves regulate all the muscles under conscious control, helping people to walk, speak and hold objects. Sensory nerves relay information about touch, temperature and pain, while autonomic nerves regulate activities that are not consciously controlled, such as breathing, heart function and digestion. Since these functions are so different, it’s no surprise that injuries to each type of nerve produce different symptoms.

to Care for Animals

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We can’t have pets in our apartment, but I want to teach my children about responsibility and compassion for animals. Are there volunteer opportunities for kids out there? -- Jessica in Seattle

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE

Give the body time to recover. Whether it’s more time between sets of repetitions or an extra day off between workouts, a fatigued body might just need more time to rest and recover. Aging men and women must recognize that they might not be capable of pushing themselves as hard as they once did and should adjust their workouts accordingly.

DEAR JESSICA: ere certainly are volunteer opportunities for kids in most communities. e hard part can be nding one that will work for your kids, t in with school schedules and provide the kind of rewarding experience you want them to have. PAWS.org, for example, has several volunteer opportunities in the Lynnwood, Washington, area. e shelter doesn’t allow kids under 18 to work directly with animals, but it hosts a special Day of Service for those 10 or older to help spruce up its dog trail, and hosts a PAWSwalk each summer. Kids also can choose to “donate their day” -- ask for donations to the organization in lieu of birthday presents, for example. at’s just one organization in one area. Kids and parents should search for local shelters and animal-rescue organizations to see what volunteer or fundraising opportunities are available. Another, more immediate opportunity may be right in your neighborhood. Do you have friends or neighbors with pets? Are they willing to let your kids visit and play with their dog or cat? Is there an elderly relative or friend who needs help walking their dog or taking their cat to the veterinarian? Remember that, as the parent, you’ll need to supervise your kids for many of these events or pet-care opportunities. But you’ll be giving them key tools to be awesome pet owners of the future.

SENIOR NEWS

Free College Courses

In an attempt to keep brain cells active this winter, I have signed up for a college course. e good news is that it’s all online and it’s free. e other good news is that it’s sponsored by a major university.

It’s called Open Courseware, and I found my class on the internet. Yale, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and many others have “massive open online courses,” also known as MOOCs, and their main purpose is to provide learning opportunities. You have to appreciate MIT especially. ey make course material for their 2,600 classes “available on the web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world.”

Most of these open courseware classes are self-paced (do them when you want a er downloading the lecture). Most don’t get you a certi cate or a degree, but then most don’t cost anything either. Beware, of course, scammers who’d like to take your personal information and charge you for a class that’s actually free and doesn’t require you to sign up. Your best bet, until you’re familiar with open courseware, is to stick to the big-name universities.

For a three-minute video showing an explanation of MIT’s open courseware, see www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICa_4xUr8BA.

Read the ne print on the website as you hunt for a class. Read the syllabus (description of the course) and the list of texts to be used. If you’re required to read books, see if they’re free to download online. (Some of the material downloads are huge.) Pay attention to the estimated time commitment for the course you want to take.

If you de nitely want to attend in-person college but need nancial help, see www.aseniorcitizenguideforcollege.com. Click on “Find Your State Tuition Waivers” and see if any in your state are covered. Some colleges will have a link to an application for a tuition waiver for seniors; some will just have a website and phone number to call for information.

Note: e Great Courses (www.thegreatcourses.com) are not open courseware and will cost money. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long.

Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

e Durand Lake Trail trail is a 1.2-mile walk, with log paths to be found on the southern end of the trail. With trees along the path such as oak, maple, and beech, this path is best for the fall season.

e Trott Lake Trail is a .5-mile path, where you’ll be walking over small rolling hills. e rare trees, such as pine, spruce, and striped maple, make for a nice forest trek.

e Eastman Lake Trail is a 1.5-mile walk which follows along the lake. is is best for observing the changes that come with the migration season in the spring and fall, especially with the presence of waterfowl and warblers. Sunlight glistens through the cherry, oak, and tulip trees, providing a visual treat for hikers on the trail.

e Arboretum is where you can look at the exotic species of trees. Some of these trees include r, dawn redwood, and hemlock. Visitors can also play golf, rest in one of the 8 shelters, and go shing, among other recreational activities available at this park. 2. Rotary Park

is park near Honeoye Falls features a 0.25-mile Zebulon Norton Trail along Honeoye Creek, perfect for a brisk stroll through the woods with some scenic views along the way.

3. Onanda Park

Starting on the northern end of Canandaigua Lake, head south on Route 21, toward Onanda Park. In .6 miles, turn le onto West Lake Road. ere, you’ll nd a stunning lake view looking south toward the village of Naples. Onanda Park Uplands Trail is a 1.4-mile loop trail located near Canandaigua, New York, with Canandaigua Lake nearby. Make a right onto Vine Street in Naples to visit Grimes Glen Park. Grimes Glen’s one-mile walk to two of its waterfalls completes this leaf peeping tour.

7. Charles E. Sexton Park

HOW TO RAKE LEAVES MORE EFFICIENTLY

Use the technology at your disposal. If the grass is still growing, you can use a mulching mower to take care of some of the leaves. The mower will shred the leaves and create nutrients for the soil and the lawn. However, once the lawn stops growing you do not want to cut it too short. This is when it is time to take out the rake.

RAVES

Thank you, Livonia!

Thank you to the wonderful businesses in Livonia NY for sponsoring Autumn in the Village. My grandchildren from Syracuse look forward to this wonderful festival as do I. This family friendly event is making memories for this Grandma and Papa!

Deepest Thanks

On August 13th at about 12:45pm, there was a horrible car accident on Route 19, just north of LeRoy. Many people stopped to help. The man in the car behind me came immediately to see if I was “all right.” The neighbor across the street came, bandaged my hand, let me use her cell phone to call my daughter, and put my frozen foods in her own freezer to preserve them. A wonderful friend who happened to be passing by, stayed with me until the ambulance arrived. Many passersby stopped to give the police an accurate report of what had happened. Most of all, I am deeply grateful to all the police, including the State Troopers who showed me great concern and protection. They were superb. Thank you to all who helped in so many ways.

- Rosemary F.

Thank you, Teachers!

Thank you to teachers and staff for making the start to this school year so fun for the students. It’s nice to see everyone’s smiling faces again!

Thanks, Coach!

Thank you to girls’ soccer coaches for all your hard work and positivity! Go Braves!

Grape Fest Praise

Kudos to the Naples Grape Festival for once again providing a wonderful festival with something for everyone! With the weather cooperating as it did, it turned out to be the perfect day indeed! I hope that you had fun if you attended; I know that I did!

Vulgar Signs on Property

I have noticed in our town as well as other towns that people displaying signs on their property with vulgar words on them. Please think about others before you display foul language for the world to see. Are you helping make the world a better place, or are you adding to the abundant filth that permeates our culture? There are so many children who travel by your homes every day and have to see these awful words that they should not even know...but now do because of you. Please remove these offensive signs and show some respect to others. Help make the world kinder instead of adding more turmoil to it.

No Trash because of "Rotten Apples"

Some public areas don’t have bins because cheap [people] use those receptacles to avoid their weekly household trash disposal fee. The result is a double whammy: abused opportunity means “no public bins,” then ground litter accumulates for lack of handy receptacles!

I live near a rural park without any bins, just a sign declaring a “carry in, carry out” policy. This policy is often ignored, so on my walks, I pick up the resulting roadway trash and pay for its proper disposal since others won’t accept responsibility.

Poor Service!

We certainly enjoy supporting all of our local businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. On a Saturday a few months ago, we received in our mail a coupon to [a local establishment]. When [we went to use it and] the clerk rang up my order, it was full price. When I had this new coupon, our [clerk said we couldn't] use our coupon. I requested the manager to void one [item]. She said there was nothing she could do. I asked for the owner's name, and the manager said, "I don't know. Look it up on Google." How unprofessional and rude! When businesses are struggling all over this country, [this establishment] won't even honor their own coupon. It's a sad day. We are very disappointed in this local business!

Autumn burned brightly, a running flame through the mountains, a torch flung to the trees.

~Faith Baldwin, American Family

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* Necklace chains that have turned dark due to oils in your skin can be washed in warm water with a dab of shampoo mixed in. Also, keep your old earring backs -- they might fit a different pair if one gets lost! -- M.F. in Washington

* To freshen the color of carpets (and destroy moth larvae or flea eggs), liberally sprinkle salt on them before vacuuming. I use a cleaned out Parmesan cheese container for this. It works very well. -- J.K. in Pennsylvania

* To clean the glass inside your oven door, use the stovetop cleaner for your glass stovetop. -- V.P. in Florida

* Use cold, salted water to defrost a chicken for roasting. You will have very flavorful and moist meat. -- E.D. in Kansas

* Save plastic lidded containers from the kitchen. Cover with colorful duct tape, and they can be used as storage or even as gift wrapping.

* Disposable razors can be used to remove burrs from sweaters or wool slacks. Just be sure to keep it out of the reach of children. -- O.D. in Tennessee

General eulogy preparation tips:

* Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service.

* Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening.

* Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments?

* Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander.

* Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself.

* Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again.

* Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
