Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

ANNUAL DRINKING WATER QUALITY REPORT FOR 2019 CANANDAIGUA-FARMINGTON WATER DISTRICT MANCHESTER VILLAGE AND TOWN WATER DISTRICTS Introduction We are pleased to present to you this year’s Annual Water Quality Report. This report is designed to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to you every day. The purpose of this report is to provide information about the quality of water that we provide to you. Our constant goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water. We want you to understand the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources. Last year, in the Canandaigua-Farmington Water District, the Town of Manchester and the Village of Manchester your tap water met all State drinking water health standards. We are committed to ensuring the quality of your water. If you have any questions about this report or concerning your water utility, please contact either: Canandaigua-Farmington: Robin MacDonald, Water Superintendent, (585) 924-3158 Town of Manchester: William Murphy, Water Superintendent, (585) 289-3010 Village of Manchester: Jeff Liberati, Water Superintendent, (585) 289-4340 New York State Department of Health, Geneva District Office, (315) 789-3030
Town of Farmington: The second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Farmington Town Hall located at 1000 County Road 8, Farmington, New York. Town of Manchester: The second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Manchester Town Hall located at 1272 County Road 7, Clifton Springs, New York. Village of Manchester: The first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Manchester Village Hall located at 8 Clifton Street, Manchester, New York. Where Does Our Water Come From? Our water source is surface water source, Canandaigua Lake. The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District is supplied from City of Canandaigua. The City of Canandaigua operates a Water Filtration Plant located on West Lake Road in the Town of Canandaigua. After filtration, carbon can also be added for taste and odor control. The water is disinfected by injection of gaseous chlorine, sodium hydroxide is added for pH control to reduce corrosion in the distribution system and then fluoride is added before being pumped to the distribution system. The treated water enters the Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District through meter pits located at the City of Canandaigua line or at the connection point with the City of Canandaigua’s transmission main. The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District supplies treated water from the City of Canandaigua to the Village of Manchester and the Town of Manchester Central District. New York State Department of Health has completed a source water assessment for Canandaigua Lake with the following results: This assessment found a moderate susceptibility to contamination for this source of drinking water. The amount of agricultural lands in the assessment area results in elevated potential for protozoa, phosphorus, DBP precursors, and pesticides contamination. While ●

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: • Microbial contaminants • Inorganic contaminants • Pesticides and herbicides • Organic chemical contaminants • Radioactive contaminants
We want our valued customers to be informed about their water utility. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled Town Board Meetings. The meetings are held:
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
there are some facilities present, permitted discharges do not likely represent an important threat to source water quality based on their density in the assessment area. However, it appears that the total amount of wastewater discharged to surface water in this assessment area is high enough to further raise the potential for contamination (particularly for protozoa). There is also noteworthy contamination susceptibility associated with other discrete contaminant sources, and these facility types include: IHWS, CBS, landfills, mines, RCRA, and TRI.
Facts and Figures The Canandaigua-Farmington water system serves over 12,000 people through 4,559 service connections. The total water purchased for the year in 2019 was 653.365 million gallons. The daily average of water treated and pumped into the distribution system was 1.791 million gallons per day. Our highest day was 2.464 million gallons for the year. The amount of water delivered to customers was 574.906 million gallons for the year. 673,300 gallons were distributed through fire hydrant meter rentals. This leaves unaccountable water total of 77.786 million gallons for the year. Approximately 20% of our unaccountable water was used to flush watermains and hydrants, and for fighting fires and fire protection. Approximately 10% of our unaccountable total water was due to water main leakage. This leaves an unaccountable total of 54.450 million gallons, which is 8.33% of the total water purchased for 2019. In 2019, water customers were charged $4.05 per 1,000 gallons for 0 to 6,000 gallons of water used and additional usage over 6,000 gallons is $4.55 per 1,000 gallons or a minimum quarterly bill of $24.30.
The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District sells water to the Town and Village of Manchester. Their System facts and figures are as follows: The Village of Manchester services a population of 1,709 through 501 service connections. The total water purchased in 2019 was 41.609 million gallons. The daily average to the distribution system was 113,997 gallons per day. The single highest day was 232,000 gallons. The amount of water sold to customers was 38.974 million gallons. Approximately 250,000 gallons of water was used to flush watermains and hydrants, fighting fires, etc. Water loss due to water main breaks 375,000. There was one water main break in 2019, on Pratt Road. This leaves an unaccounted total of 2.011 million gallons, which is 4.0% of the total purchased. In 2019, water customers were charged $26.00 for 0 to 5,000 gallons of water used as the minimum quarterly bill. Any additional usage over 5,000 gallons is $4.50 per thousand. $4.00 water meter rent per quarter.

FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 2020
Manchester Village is required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not your drinking water meets health standards. During 2019 we tested 2 times per month for Coliform Bacteria. There were no missed samples and none tested positive. The Town of Manchester Water Districts services a population of 1470 through 574 service connections. The total water purchased in 2019 was 64,081,900 million gallons. The daily average to the distribution system was 198,726 gallons per day. The single highest day was 376,000 gallons in April 2019. The amount of water sold to customers was 48,382,833 gallons. Zero gallons were lost due to water main breaks. Approximately 490,000 gallons of water was used to flush water mains, hydrants and fight fires. In 2019 water customers were charged $42.00 from 0 to 5,000 gallons of water used as the minimum quarterly bill. Any additional usage over 5,000 gallons is $4.52 per 1,000 gallons. Note: Coliform bacteria are tested for once a month. There was a positive test for Coliform on 10/17/2019 at 3416 Outlet Road.
and synthetic organic contaminants. The table presented below depicts which contaminants were detected in your drinking water. The State allows us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants are not expected to vary significantly from year to year. Therefore, some of the data, though representative of the water quality, is more than one year old. Test results were all negative except for those indicated on the following table. The Canandaigua-Farmington Consolidated Water District tested the water for coliform bacteria at least ten (10) times a month. The Village of Manchester tested the water for coliform bacteria two times per month. The Manchester Central Water District tested the water for coliform bacteria once per month. The table presented below depicts which compounds were detected in your drinking water. It should be noted that all drinking water, including bottled drinking water, may be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Information on Fluoride Addition Our system is one of the many drinking water systems in New York State that provides drinking water with a controlled, low level of fluoride for consumer dental health protection. Fluoride is added to your drinking water by the City of Canandaigua before it is delivered to the Canandaigua-Farmington water system. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control, fluoride is very effective in preventing cavities when present in drinking water at an optimal range from 0.7 to 1.2 mg/L (parts per million). To ensure that the fluoride supplement in your water provides optimal dental protection, the State Department of Health requires that the City of Canandaigua monitor fluoride levels on a daily basis. In 2015 the City of Canandaigua’s average was 0.79 mg/L. None of the monitoring results showed fluoride at levels greater than the 2.2 mg/L MCL for fluoride. Are There Contaminants In Our Drinking Water? In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, we routinely test your drinking water. The New York State Department of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency prescribe regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. These contaminants include: total coliform, turbidity, inorganic compounds, nitrate, nitrite, lead and copper, volatile organic compounds, total trihalomethanes, and synthetic organic compounds. The State Health Department’s and the FDA’s regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. Canandaigua-Farmington Water District is required to test for List 1 contaminants, one of which is strontium, under the third round of Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR3). This monitoring provides a basis for future regulatory requirements. In accordance with State regulations, the City of Canandaigua routinely monitors your drinking water for numerous contaminants. They test your drinking water for coliform bacteria, turbidity, inorganic contaminants, lead and copper, nitrate, volatile organic contaminants, total trihalomethanes, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Definitions: Action Level: The concentration of a contaminant that, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow. Maximum Amount Detected: This column represents an average of sample result data collected during the reporting year. In some cases, it may represent a single sample if only one sample was collected. Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as possible. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. N/A: Not applicable ND: Not detectable at testing limits. Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU): Measure of the clarity, or turbidity, of water. Parts per Million: One part of liquid in one million parts of liquid (or milligram per liter). Parts per Billion: One part of liquid in one billion parts of liquid (or microgram per liter). Ranger (Low – High ): This column represents a range of individual sample results, from lowest to highest, that were collected during the reporting year. Treatment Technique (TT) - A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water. Picocuries per liter (pCi/l): Picocuries per liter is a measure of radioactivity in water. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal (MRDLG): The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectant to control microbial contamination.

Turbidity is a measure of the cloudiness of the water, and is monitored as an indicator of the effectiveness of our filtration system. The turbidity rule requires that 95% or more of monthly samples be below 0.3 NTUs. Measured in lab. 3
The level presented represents the 90th percentile. A percentile is a value on a scale of 100 that indicates the percent of a distribution that is equal to or below it. The 90th percentile is equal to or greater than 90% of the lead and copper values detected at your water system. 4
Number of homes out of 30 that were above the action level.

Coliforms are bacteria that are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially harmful bacteria may be present. 7
This level represents the highest locational running annual average calculated from data collected.
MCL’s are set at very stringent levels. To understand the possible health effects described for many regulated constituents, a person would have to drink 2 liters of water every day at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-amillion chance of having the described health effect. Do I Need To Take Special Precautions? Some people may be more vulnerable to disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care provider about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Lead. Infants and young children are typically more vulnerable to lead in drinking water than the general population. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as a result of materials used in your home’s plumbing. If you are concerned about elevated lead levels in your home’s water, you may wish to have your water

Why Save Water and How to Avoid Wasting It? Although our system has an adequate amount of water to meet present and future demands, there are a number of reasons why it is important to conserve water: • Saving water saves energy and some of the costs associated with both of these necessities of life; • Saving water reduces the cost of energy required to pump water and the need to construct costly new wells, pumping systems and water towers; and • Saving water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions so that essential fire fighting needs are met. You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water. Conservation tips include: • Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity. • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. • Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day. Fix it up and you can save almost 6,000 gallons per year. • Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from one of these otherwise invisible toilet leaks. Fix it and you save more than 30,000 gallons a year. • Use your water meter to detect hidden leaks. Simply turn off all taps and water using appliances, and then check the meter after 15 minutes. If it moved, you have a leak. System Improvements 1. Work began in February 2019 on the Beaver Creek Phase 2 project. 2,375 liner feet of 12” DR-14 waterline running east from State Route 332 crossing County Road 41 at the intersection of Beaver Creek Road then proceeding in a northward direction to south of the Beaver Creek bridge was completed in April 2019. 2. In May 2019 work was completed and approved by the Department of Health for Hickory Rise Section 4. 1,708 liner feet of 8” DR-14 PVC watermain and associated appurtenances were installed. 3. Several projects were completed at the end of June. To connect two dead ends and to provide additional ingress and egress 700 linear feet of 12” DIP water main between Ivory Drive and Carmen Way was installed to close the loop for the Farmington Pointe intersection. 970 linear feet of 8” DIP water main and two fire hydrants were completed on Jasper Drive. 120 linear feet of DIP water main was finished on Ackerman Way. 4. Mid-July saw another project completed; installation of approximately 1,970LF of 8” PVC water main, four fire hydrants, and associated appurtenances to serve Auburn Meadows Section 9. 5. August 7th through August 10th we experienced seven water main breaks. As a result we experienced four days of higher than normal water consumption.

6. This summer the Canandaigua-Farmington Water District replaced 30 old 1972 & 1977 Kennedy K-11 three Bib fire hydrants in Kings Village, Doe Haven and Farmbrook Subdivisions, and on Canandaigua Farmington Town Line Road. Four 1962 K-8 two-bib hydrants were also replaced; two on Hook Road and two on Pannell Road. 7. In October the Plans for Public Water Supply Improvement for Redfield Grove Phase 2 were approved by the DOH (Department of Health). 950 LF of 8î PVC water main with two hydrants will be installed. 8. With regards to improving water pressures within the Canandaigua-Farmington Water District, we are continuing the planning and designing a new elevated water tank to replace the aging water tank located at Brickyard Road in the Town of Canandaigua. The district is also looking to install a new 16-inch water transmission line running from the new water tank to the Canandaigua-Farmington Town Line which will connect to new 12-inch water mains. Helen M. Guadagna April 15, 2020 Honeoye: At age 85, Helen passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at the Ontario Center in Canandaigua, NY. (Karen) Guadagna, her sister; Ann Maria ( Joseph) Santonocito, her brother; Michael Longo, her grandson; Paul M. (Roxanne) Guadagna, and her great grandchildren; Paul F. DECOR IDEAS TO GIVE HOMES A FRESH LOOK THIS SPRING ACCENT FEATURES: Sometimes the smallest changes to an interior space make the biggest impression. Replace dated accents like vases and table lamps with newer items that reflect the latest styles and trends. Such adjustments won’t break the bank, and they can give rooms a whole new feel.
With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. Grace Baptist of Dansville Offers Neighbors a Helping Hand and a Listening Ear BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing and restrictions which have resulted from it have been difficult on nearly everyone. Many have felt isolated. Some have struggled to get their groceries and other necessities. Still others are struggling with the anxiety and stress of these uncertain times. With kids at home, some adults out of work, seniors and others living alone and other challenging situations, the congregation of Grace Baptist Church in Dansville has reached out to offer support. The idea started with member Dr. Jason Elwell, a pediatrician at Stony Brook Pediatrics. “For some time now, we have wanted to be a part of the community and reach out to our neighbors,”said Elwell. “We want folks to know we are here for them, and they are not going through this alone.” He approached Pastor David Theobald about leaving doorhangers in the Dansville and Wayland Villages to simply offer extra support, and the idea was wholeheartedly embraced. “We have a lot of members who just jumped at this opportunity to give their time and be of service,” added Elwell. These door hangers let neighbors know that Grace Baptist is offering to help by picking up groceries, lending a listening ear and simply being ready, willing and able to help in whatever capacity they can to alleviate the stress this pandemic is bringing to local seniors, individuals and families. “These are geared toward those who may feel the most isolated, the most shut in by this virus,” explained Elwell. “We are primarily offering two services to those who call: grocery and supplies pick up and pastors and counselors who are available to listen, advise and help.” “There are a lot of people who are very stressed and anxious right now,” shared Elwell. “Folks are just in the pressure cooker right now, so to speak, and there are certainly mental health outlets available. Using telemedicine has been a blessing and just shows the need that is out there. It is wonderful to know we have our people at Grace Baptist to help give them an outlet for stress, as well.”
which we check multiple times a day, and they will hear back from us within 24 hours.” While everything is someone’s idea, Elwell is clear that this outreach is the result of an active team looking for ways to help. Members like Rob Wilson, Matt and Stacy Gibson, Christa Barrows, Terry Fitzsimmons, Roberta McLean and Blair Powley are all eager to serve the families and individuals in these communities they love. “The whole church, like any church, was turned on its head in order Erin & Natalie E. with their mother, Darcey, to honor the restrictions on ready to hit the streets! meeting. This answered our question, which was, ‘We can’t do church like normal, but serving the Lord and being a follower of Christ isn’t about doing church, so how do we do that through all of this?’” Their answer may be hanging on your door handle. While offering support through door hangers is certainly the church’s most recent outreach, it is certainly not its only one. “We are hosting a family picnic and free chicken BBQ on June 24,” said Pastor David Theobald. “If the picnic can’t be held due to ban on public gatherings, it will be offered as drivethrough.” Other offerings include the Grace Baptist Youth Group for young people in 7th to 12th Grade to explore the Christian faith and is currently meeting via Zoom; summer programs for kids and teens with free supper and street hockey, basketball, soccer and beach volleyball; Biblical counseling for marriage, individuals and families; the Clean & Free program which offers Christ-centered hope and freedom for those struggling with addictions of any kind; a women’s ministry and a men’s ministry. “If you’re feeling like there is no hope and don’t know where to turn, know that you are not alone,” said Pastor Theobald. “One of our counselors or Pastors is available to help. Call the church: 585-335-6190 or email secretary@gracebcdansville.org.” For now, sermons are available on the church website: www.gracebcdansville.org and their Facebook page
Nathan, Emma and Maddie G. with their mother, Stacie who is also a counselor at Grace Baptist!
“People have had their world turned upside down, and if they simply need someone to speak with, we have people who are trained to do that,” said Elwell. “COVID-19 has been emotionally, psychologically and spiritually stressful. The members of Grace Baptist have been looking for a way to serve and are hoping to show the community that they love and care about them.” Of course, Grace Baptist had to receive permission from the town first. “We definitely cleared passing out door hangers with the town,” stated Elwell. “The town seemed very supportive and pleased that we are offering this support. We are not soliciting, simply offering a service and leaving that offer on people’s doors and following health guidelines with masks and gloves. If they would like to call and engage, it is entirely up to them. If they do call, they would be leaving a message on the church’s voicemail

Trip to Supermarket Brings New Challenges It occurred to me the other day that I haven’t been eating right. It’s been difficult to find food in my stores, and it’s been difficult to work up the courage to go out, fearing I might get too close to someone who is sick. It also occurred to me that not eating right was bad for my immune system, should I need to fight off an illness. I began going out just before my nearest store closed at night, dashing in for one or two items, using the self-checkout, and fleeing out the door with my haul. That’s assuming my two items were actually on the shelves. But now, in the nick of time, two stores have restarted pickup service, after having cancelled it for over a month. I place the pickup order online, select a time slot two days in advance, and drive there to have my groceries put in the car. It works, even if there are a lot of substitutions of items and a few items out of stock. Here’s a thought: Do you have a supplemental Medicare policy or Medicare Advantage? Does it cover meal delivery service, perhaps Meals on Wheels? Some do. Coverage might only apply at certain times (if you’ve just had surgery or have a medical condition), but a lot of rules are changing now. It wouldn’t hurt to check your policy. Easy ways to volunteer… and give back to your community Millions of people across the globe volunteer every day. Without the selfless efforts of volunteers, many charities would be forced to cease operations. In fact, a 2017 study from the charitable community membership organization Independent Sector estimated that the labor provided by volunteers is worth roughly $193 billion per year in the United States alone. But volunteering can be as beneficial for volunteers as it can for the organizations they help. For example, the Mayo Clinic Health System notes that research has indicated volunteering leads to lower rates of depression while providing individuals with a sense of purpose. Volunteering can be especially beneficial for adults over age 60, with the MCHS noting that older volunteers experience greater increases in life satisfaction and greater positive changes in their perceived health as a result of volunteering. With so much to gain from volunteering, it’s no wonder that so many people across the globe volunteer. According to the United Nations Volunteers program, global estimates place the number of worldwide volunteers at 970 million. That’s nearly three times the population of the United States and more than 26 times the population of Canada in 2018. It’s never been easier to volunteer and begin helping your community. Adults and children who want to join the nearly one billion strong global volunteering community need not look far to get involved. The Corporation for National Community Service notes that the following are some easy ways to volunteer in your community. · Serve meals at a local shelter or community kitchen. · Sign up to work as a tutor or mentor with a local afterschool program. · Help adults find the right professional opportunities by hosting a résumé writing/review workshop and conducting practice interview sessions. · Work in conjuction with a local food pantry to organize a food donation drive. · Volunteer to help the environment by working with local, state, or national park services to beautify parks and/or a local community garden. · Work with a local emergency response organization to produce and distribute disaster-preparedness kits. · Help fellow community members save money by collecting and sharing information about free tax-preparation services. · Read to students or seniors- contact a local community or senior center. · Volunteer at an animal shelter.
When it comes to volunteering, the opportunities are as endless as the benefits of giving back to your community. GB19B381 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Stretching Pet Food While in Quarantine DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Because I was possibly exposed to COVID-19 at the grocery store where I work, I have to stay home for 14 days. About three days into my quarantine, I realized that the dog food for my mixed-breed dog “Corky” was running low. I don’t have any family nearby, and I don’t want to make my co-workers nervous by asking them to bring a bag of dog food over. I thought about ordering from that online pet food delivery service, but I think it will take too long. What can I do to tide Corky over? –- Sara J., White Plains, New York DEAR SARAH: I feel for ya! My family and I are currently quarantined, too, and we’re finding online ordering of staples and pet food to be challenging. Take stock of exactly how much dry dog food you have left -- literally measure it out cup by cup into a container. Divide the total cups by the number of scoops per day that you give your dog. If the bag has less dry food than you’ll need for 11 more days, you can stretch it out and make sure Corky gets enough calories by combining his dry food with fresh food. Unseasoned, cooked rice and oatmeal, veggies like peas and carrots (but not onions, garlic, grapes or avocado), chicken, beef or salmon (unseasoned) are all safe and healthy options. Replace half to all the kibble per meal with a fresh alternative. Many communities are also spinning up “helping hand” services. Check the website of your local government, online community pages and even the local library’s site to find out if you can contact someone to drop off dog food. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

CLEVER WAYS TO USE LEFTOVERS CREATE NEW MEALS. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers.
“Hello, my name is Pudge! I came from a farm, and can you tell why I’m named Pudge from my furry face? I love to eat popcorn when I’m given treats. Every day at 5:10pm when Vince walks in, I stand on my wee little legs, anticipating him to walk by and pet me on my head. My favorite treats are carrots, apples, and romaine lettuce. I started off as a tiny guinea pig, and now I’ve grown into a football-sized piggy. I’m currently 5.5 years old, and Vince hopes I live as long as he does.” Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “I use curbside pickup for my groceries these days. I keep two large laundry baskets in the hatchback of my vehicle. Any bags go in the baskets, so it’s easy to transport them into the house and keep contact to a minimum. When I’m done unloading and wiping down, I can spray out the laundry baskets and let them dry in the sun for next time. Can’t be too careful.” -- T.E. in Virginia

* “Stay ahead of the drain: Pour a tea kettle of boiling water down the drain once a month, or if you notice the drain slowing. The hot water can break up material collecting inside the drain. Half a cup of baking soda added to the water will absorb any odors that are building.” -- Colepepper Plumbing in California * “I color code my plants by their light needs. The closer the pot color is to red, the more light it needs. For instance, my lavender is in a red pot -full sun. I have a nice potted citronella that likes part sun, so it’s in a lime-colored pot (yellow-green) and my indoor pots are plum. I have a lovely rainbow of plants!” -- Y.S. in Arizona

* A hanging shoe rack is a handy place to keep office supplies and school supplies for the whole family. Pencils, markers, assignment cards, and even papers. You can give each person a row, or label the pockets. * There’s a lot of decluttering going on across the country right now. Here’s a pro tip: For seasonal items, if you didn’t wear it last season, consider selling or donating. Same applies if it’s a specialty item (skiwear, hiking boots, formalwear) that hasn’t been used for more than two years. Many people keep items that are on the expensive side, even though season after season goes by without the item being used. If you rationalize keeping the scuba suit, plan a scuba trip!
SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.
Getty Images
Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Researchers Working on Cure for Herpes --DEAR DR. ROACH: If a person has been exposed (verified by blood test) to herpes 1 and 2, can that person be a blood donor? Could a person catch herpes by sitting on a toilet seat that has been used by an infected person? Are scientists working on a cure for herpes? -- Anon. ANSWER: There remains a stigma against people with genital herpes, which is almost always caused by herpes simplex virus type 2. However, most people with genital herpes will not have major disruptions to their lives provided they take some precautions. First off, a person with herpes simplex virus type 1 (about half of the population between ages 18-49, higher in older people) or HSV-2 (about 12% of the same population) certainly can donate blood. Second, being exposed doesn’t guarantee infection. Third, blood testing is not perfect. Fourth, getting any kind of sexually transmitted infection from a toilet seat is very unlikely. Herpes viruses have a very difficult time getting through intact skin, which is why most exposures come through mucus membranes, especially of the genitals and mouth. There is a type of herpes (usually HSV-1, occasionally HSV-2) in wrestlers, called herpes gladiatorum or “mat herpes,” and it can be transmitted from person to person through skin-to-skin contact, especially if the skin is raw or chafed. Once a person has herpes of either variety, there is no cure. The virus stays in the nerve cells. There is extensive work being done both on preventing transmission and curing existing infections, but herpes viruses are very good at escaping the immune system. This makes herpes difficult to treat.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Should a person be concerned about serious side effects from long-term use of Claritin-D? My son has been using the medication continuously for about nine years. He has had allergy shots, which were minimally helpful. He cannot use nasal rinses or sprays because they cause nosebleeds. He does have some sleeping problems, but since he’s been taking Claritin-D for so long, it’s hard to tell if that medication is the cause. -- M.S. ANSWER: Claritin-D is a combination of the antihistamine loratadine and the decongestant pseudoephedrine. Loratadine is considered safe in most people. Pseudoephedrine is safe for younger people, but it can raise blood pressure and pulse, and in older men, can cause urinary symptoms. He might try plain Claritin, which is just the loratadine, and save the Claritin-D for his worst days. Less pseudoephedrine is probably better. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your comments to I.T. with interest, as I had my gallbladder removed way back in 1968. I feel you left out a side effect that follows the procedure for many patients: the “dump” syndrome, or diarrhea. This result has plagued me and several others for years. I found some relief by taking cholestyramine before eating. -- J.C. ANSWER: That’s a very good point, and one I did not highlight. “Dumping syndrome” refers to bile being delivered to the intestine suddenly, causing diarrhea. It isn’t common, fortunately, and I, too, have found that cholestyramine can be very effective, in addition to eating smaller, more-frequent meals. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Recover Newsfeeds tend to focus on negatives. Focus instead on the number of those recovered. Check it out thanks to Johns Hopkins at https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html. That number will one day overtake the others, and on that “Flip Day,” let’s remember to celebrate!
Faith We depend on each other, and these bonds of trust draw us together as a community. Have faith in your friends, family and neighbors and in the incredible compassion of strangers. At the same time, be faithful to reach out to those depending on you. Phone calls, food, check-ins and cheerful words go farther now than ever. Don’t forget: a smile and wave are a safe way to bridge six feet!
Calm Remain calm and clearheaded whether you are managing your portfolio or purchasing groceries. The stock market always recovers, and our country’s supply of vital goods is strong. Panic selling and panic buying are not in the best interests of you or your community.
Support Local businesses need your support more than ever to keep local communities strong. Order takeout from local restaurants, buy goods from local businesses online or purchase gift cards to them and don’t forget to pay your gym membership. There is no better time to put “We local business” into action! Share this message and spread some hope!

I would like to thank my neighbors, the Henslers, for making a beautiful mask for me to wear. I appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness. - JM Harris Kudos to the wonderful staff at the Teresa House for keeping the Comfort Home opened during this pandemic. The 2 residents are very fortunate to have such a caring group of Volunteers and Nurses who continue to shower them with love and attention. Thank you for your kindness. It shows in everything you do. Stay safe, stay well, and stay hopeful.
I would like to know why people who are nonessential workers are still going to work and possibly exposing their family members and other people? I understand people must work, but if we do not do our part, we will never get out from under this. Please let us do our part stay home, so I do not lose a family member. Thank you. I do not understand why some people must sit in their apartments and watch the coming and going of their neighbors or take it upon themselves to play parking lot police. I think that there are some people who are not meant for complex living. Just because they are a frustrated, miserably old woman. Please do not take it out on your neighbors. I am sad that our Village DPW does not fill potholes. They are not plowing snow nor working in parks nor tree trimming. The least they could do is fill the potholes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

This is to the police officers who read the paper. I understand you need to concentrate resources in larger areas like the cities, but on the country roads, people are literally (and I am not exaggerating) going 100 mph down the roads. I was driving going 60 mph and got passed by two people going over 80 mph at least. This happens every day now because they think they will not get caught, and I, for one, am sick of hearing the rev of engines going up and down my road and the main road.

With a son in a group home and other relatives in rehab and senior facilities, we so appreciate those who care for our dear ones, keeping them safe and healthy. We thank those who go above and beyond normal duties to keep our son in a Heritage Christian Home, actively engaged in jobs and artwork to keep him stimulated in an at-home environment, along with photos and reports on his well-being. A million thanks to our direct care pros who are on the front lines like other essential services such as groceries, pharmacies, and transportation as well as to our older son who, among millions, deliver tons of stuff to our homes and businesses.
A big and grateful thank you to the man who was in front of me at the Tim Hortons in Batavia on Lewiston Rd. on April 11th, 2020. He paid for my bill. I was there picking up gift certificates for my family for Easter. Little did he know he not only paid for me but for my family. So altogether you paid for eight grateful people. I know that God will bless you for your kindness, and I cannot say thank you enough. Stay safe and healthy and thank you again.
This needs to be addressed. To all the people ignoring the rules and going out, what are you trying to prove? Good for you; you are risking others catching the virus. People pack into the markets and ignore the six-foot rule as well. I am disgusted that you who still go out to gatherings publicly brag in line for others to hear how ‘cool and defiant’ you are being. I literally heard a woman scoff and say, “Well, I’m not staying home.” Guess what? You and the people like you are the reason we need alerts to our phone telling us to stay in. Thanks for lessening the chances of spreading it. Stay home. As the ad says, “Be apart now so we can be together later.”
Responding to Mind your Business: I agree with your post. It does not matter where some live, whether it be in a condo, or a complex apartment, or in a house. Some people are just a piece of work. They think they own the neighborhood. They monitor everything...and everyone. It is truly sad that they do not have a life that they resort to being like they are. They become the town criers as it were. Since they have no friends or family that really want anything to do with them, they take on the job of poking their noses in everybody else’s business. That makes them think that they are important, when in actuality, no one wants to be around them, nor do they respect them. Every neighborhood has someone like that, I guess. As hard as it may be, do not let it bother you. They love it when it does. Stay well.
Regarding Painted Rocks. I saw one of them the other day, and it was so adorable! But from more than 10 feet away, it does look like another piece of trash. I agree that, at the park while enjoying nature, it is nice to see nature and not what looks like trash on the ground, even if it is cute close up.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You still might have to deal with some lingering confusion that marked a recent workplace situation. But for the most part, you should now be well on your way to your next project. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new commitment might demand more time than you’d expected to have to give it. But rely on that special Bovine gift for patience, and stick with it. You’ll be glad you did. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re earning the admiration of a lot of people who like the way you handle yourself when your views are on the line. Even one or two of your detractors are being won over. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking your responsibilities seriously is what you do. But ease up on the pressure gauge, and make time for much needed R & R. Start by making this weekend a “just for fun” time zone. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some recently uncovered information might make a change of plans inevitable. If so, deal with it as quickly as possible, and then find out what went wrong and why. What you learn might surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Aspects favor moving carefully and deliberately when making any significant changes. Could be there are more facts you need to know, which you might overlook if you rush things. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A problem neighbor might be looking to goad you into an action you don’t want to take. Ask someone you both respect if he or she would act as an impartial arbitrator for both of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent workplace accomplishment hasn’t been overlooked by those who watch these things. Meanwhile, start making travel plans for that much-too-long-deferred trip with someone special. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Those money matters continue to move in your favor. Now would be a good time to start putting some money back into the house, both for esthetic as well as economic reasons. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A changing workplace environment can create job pressures. But, once again, follow the example of your birth sign and take things a step at a time, like the sure-footed Goat you are. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cheer up. You could soon have the funds you need for your worthy project. Your generous gifts of time and effort are well known, and someone might decide it’s time to join with you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your inner scam-catcher is right on target, and you’re absolutely right to reject that “too good to be true” offer. Meanwhile, something positive should be making its way to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are generous, and also sympathetic to people who find they need the help of others. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.
