CROSSWORD Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.

We recently had our 60th Wedding Anniversary, but celebrated on a summer day in July with a "Picnic/Jam" in our backyard. We are so pleased and thankful for all who came and played music or brought a dish to share. The Piper marched, and the band played on! We are truly blessed and appreciate all of you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Bill and Hilda Santee
There is a person who walks the [local trail] every day between the [local road] and the [local road]. Waking at times can be very boring. The trail however, has many trees. Then up came the idea. Being a bird lover, the Walker began to buy, paint and affix little bird houses to the trail trees here and there. Those who walked the trail each day commented on the joy of looking each day, to try and find the new ones which had been put up. There was a golf shop, a lighthouse, a bait shop and others. Then one day the Walker began to notice some of the bird houses were disappearing. First 3 were gone. Why would anyone steal a bird house? Surely many stores sell bird houses. After those 3 were stolen the Walker bought more and painted them and put them up. Then 4 more

disappeared having been ripped from the trees, and that was the last straw. All 24 bird houses spread out all over the area, were taken down and given to people who will love them, and do...END OF STORY. Except...one would remind the thief of the 8th commandment...THOU SHALL NOT STEAL. Just a reminder to be kind to those working in the retail jobs this summer. We have a bunch of first time workers out there trying to gain experience and make some college money. No need to be nasty. My 16 year old started her first job at a family fun venue and comes home every shift with a story of an adult who was rude and nasty to her. Remember these employees do not make the rules or prices of the establishment. If you are that upset over the extra twenty cents for a cone upgrade, you need to see a manager not swear at and belittle the kid behind the counter. They are there standing in the heat, cold or rain for minimum pay trying their best and learning as they go. It's funny because she never makes comments about the

events for thinking about your younger guests. My children and I have been to several such events recently, and everywhere we go, there are activities for the children, goodies, small prizes, face-painting, bounce houses, petting zoos, even carnival rides free-of-charge. It isn’t always easy for families to afford to give their children a family fun day, but these festivals make it much easier by keeping their snacks and
behavior of the children enjoying the place, just the parents. When are people going to learn to hold their cell and or "smart" phones in the proper position when they're recording something? If you don't know what you’re doing w/ your phone, take some necessary time to figure out how your phone really works or ask a friend. This problem has been happening for quite some time. Let’s get with it people; if it's worth recording it's worth recording properly. Let's hurry up and get rid of the history we all learned about so the next generation has no history class. Then we can say slavery never happened. While we're at it lets go further back and say the Indians were not here first. Then we can put those lands back on the tax rolls and they can start paying taxes also. Maybe the Boston Tea Party didn't happen either. It amazes me how many people can on a daily basis violate the speed limit in [local town]. The main street is 35 MPH and at times the road seems like a raceway. What happened to speed limit
activities for kids low cost or free. Thank you for your kindhearted generosity!
enforcement? Cars, trucks, motorcycles all seem to disregard speed limit signs!! I would like to see more speed enforcement for this residential neighborhood for the safety of all who live here!! Stop Eating Without Paying! To those who take and eat food in grocery stores, please stop. It's disgusting. Not to mention stealing. You know who you are, especially in produce, bulk foods, and prepared foods. What ever happened to the law that says 'innocent until proven guilty?'? It seems the only way justice works is 'trial by media,' which is wrong and also depends on who is footing the bill to whether justice is served or not. We all know who they are... This summer a private citizen beautified a local trail by putting up many hand assembled and painted birdhouses. Almost immediately, someone saw it their duty to remove, steal and destroy many of them. This seems to be an act of meanness and difficult to understand. Why do some people need to act to destroy a donation meant to increase the enjoyment of the trail for all its users?!

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks occur suddenly and are periods of intense fear that may include palpitations, pounding heartbeat and/or accelerated heart rate. People in the midst of a panic attack may also experience shortness of breath or feel as though they are choking or being smothered. Feelings of impending doom may also occur during a panic attack. Anxiety disorders, including panic disorders, may be caused by the interaction of certain genetic and environmental factors. These factors include behavioral inhibition in childhood, exposure to stressful life events in childhood and adulthood, anxiety disorders in close biological relatives and a parental history of mental disorders. Anxiety disorders are generally treated with psychotherapy or medication, or a combination of both.
Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Reducing Eye Strain --DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you mind providing some guidelines for preventing eye strain? I’m a graduate student, so I spend a lot of time reading, both from computer screens and from books. I will always need to read to get things done, but I’d also like my eyes to last me my whole life. -- B.I. ANSWER: We tend to spend a lot of time reading or in front of computer screens, and eye strain is very common. I think eye problems from excess screen time and reading fall into two categories: dry eyes and muscle strain. Computer users in particular can get dry eyes, largely from decreased blinking. Unfortunately, “blink more” isn’t likely to be successful advice, so I recommend an eye lubricant, used periodically during computer work if you have any sense of eye fatigue or strain. If dry eyes are part of your problem, you will feel relief immediately, and you should use a drop in each eye every few hours. Muscle strain comes from staring at one point of focus -- your computer screen -- for long periods of time. Also, many people tend to hold their shoulders and neck in an uncomfortable position during computer work or play. The solution is to get away from the computer for a while. I recommend getting up and pacing periodically, since prolonged sitting isn’t good for you. Another option is the 20-20-20 rule (I haven’t been able to discover who made the rule, but I think it makes sense): Look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This can help prevent fatigue to the ciliary muscles, the muscles of the eye. Some people, especially those who are nearing or past their 50th birthday, might benefit from very mild reading glasses when using the computer. There is a science behind adjusting your workspace, lighting and monitor settings to reduce strain. There are apps to remind you to take breaks periodically and to change the color of your computer to make it easier on the eyes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had nail fungus since 1985 in both my toenails and my fingernails. I was treated with oral Lamisil, but it did nothing for my big toe. I have been treated by skin and foot specialists, but the problem has continued progressively over the years. I am 80 years old, and it’s still there. Is there really any hope for cases like mine? -- C.J.R. ANSWER: Are you sure you really want the condition treated? The treatments have potential for real harm, even though it isn’t likely. If the issue is strictly cosmetic, I wouldn’t recommend treatment. If it’s for pain or because you have had skin or soft tissue infections in the area, then treatment is reasonable. If you pursue treatment, get a culture done to be sure you know what you are treating. Sometimes what looks like a nail infection is really something else (psoriasis, eczema, lichen planus or others). Depending on what the culture shows, you might benefit from itraconazole, an oral antifungal agent. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Byron-Bergen Schools Embody “Farm To School” Story Submitted by: Gretchen Spittler October is National Farm to School Month. Since its Congressional dedication in 2010, schools are encouraged to collaborate with local farmers to bring fresh, local produce into school cafeterias throughout October. However, School Cafeteria Lunch Manager Mary Dellapenna does not wait for October. For the past five years, she has been out in the community working with farms to source fresh, local ingredients. Fresh fruit is on the menu every day at Byron-Bergen schools and, if a student chooses an apple, it likely came from Roanoke Apple Farm. The family owned and operated farm is located twelve miles from the school. The proprietor, Linda Williams, delivers the handpicked fruit directly to the school. “It’s all about the community,” said Williams. “Even though this is an agricultural community, a lot of the kids don’t know where their food comes from or how it gets there. I like knowing that we help them eat fresh and clean.” It’s not just the apples that have a quick commute to the school. Dellapenna also locally sources green beans, cucumbers, cabbage, onions, and squash from Torrey Farms in Elba. Torrey Farms has been family owned and operated for twelve generations with seasonal employees with forty years of experience with the company. While Torrey Farms generally sells to stores and wholesale distributors, they make an extra effort when it comes to schools. “We are here for the schools who want to make it work,” said sales team member Shannon Kyle. “It can be a logistical challenge, but we are willing to go above and beyond for Mary (Dellapenna).” However, getting the food to the school is only the first challenge. Dellapenna and her team must choose recipes that the students will enjoy. “The fresh produce goes over very well with the students who regularly choose it over processed food,” said Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School Cook and Manager Rozanne Klycek. “The local apples and cucumber wheels are definite favorites.” Much of the local produce requires preparation. Unlike canned green beans, fresh green beans are washed, snipped, and cooked in the school kitchens and Dellapenna must keep an eye on labor hours. However, Klycek and her staff understand the importance of bringing the students fresh food. “The health benefit of locally grown produce is that it is “fresh,” meaning there are no preservatives or additives like salt or sugar,”

However, come spring, she will be back out on the farms seeking out the best local produce for the Byron-Bergen students.

Everyday ways to help your elderly neighbors Thoughtful men, women and children can give back to their communities in various ways. Coaching youth sports, volunteering with local charities and donating to local food or clothing drives are just a few of the ways you can help make your community a better place. Another way to give back is to help your elderly neighbors who may not be as independent as they once were. Such men and women may have physical limitations that compromise their ability to perform everyday tasks. People in the prime of their life take their ability to perform such tasks for granted. While these gestures might seem simple, helping your elderly neighbors with their everyday tasks can have a profound impact on their lives. • Ask if a neighbor needs anything from the grocery store. Everyone forgets to buy something at the grocery store from time to time. That’s a minor inconvenience to most people, but it can have a much bigger impact on elderly people who have mobility issues. Before taking trips to the grocery store, make it a habit to call an elderly neighbor and ask if he or she needs anything. • Invite seniors over for dinner or other gatherings. Many seniors deal with social isolation, which occurs when they lack opportunities to interact with other people. Recent data from the Administration on Aging indicates that 35 percent of women over the age of 65 were widows and almost half of women 75 and older live alone. Inviting elderly neighbors who live alone over for dinners, movie nights or game watches once per week is a great way to help them avoid social isolation and give them something to look forward to.
simple tasks like mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage and even vacuuming can be difficult for seniors with physical limitations. Pitching in to help with such chores once or twice a week won’t require much time on your part and can have a significant impact on the lives of your aging neighbors. • Drive seniors to religious services. Attending religious services is important to many seniors, but those who can no longer drive themselves to weekly services may not be attending them as much as they would like. Whether you attend such services or not, offer to drive an elderly neighbor on Sunday mornings (or whenever weekly services are held). Religious services can help seniors stay connected to their faith and their communities, and driving an elderly neighbor to and from houses of worship once per week won’t require a significant commitment of your time.
Helping your elderly neighbors is a great and often simple way • Help with some weekly chores. Seniors living on fixed incomes may find it difficult to maintain their homes. Relatively to give back to your community.
DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Practicing interpersonal skills: All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation.

Autumn is the dim shadow that clusters about the sweet, precious things that God has created in the realm of nature. While it robs them of life, it tears away the veil and reveals the golden gem of beauty and sweetness. Beauty lurks in all the dim old aisles of nature, and we discover it at last.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A colleague might offer to open a door for you professionally. But before you walk through it, be sure this “favor” isn’t attached to an obligation you might find difficult to discharge. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creativity, your persistence and your reliability could lead to a major career shift. Be sure to use that other Taurean trait, your practicality, when discussing what the job offers. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A changing situation might require some adjustments you might not have been prepared to make. However, flexibility in this matter could be the best course to follow at this time. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You’re in a period of fluctuating moods, which is not unusual for the Moon Child. Your emotions stabilize by the 26th. Meanwhile, try to hold off making major decisions until then. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) That keen sense of perception helps you hunt down those minute details that others overlook. And, of course, your Leonine ego will accept the expected praise with good grace. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to be confrontational when raising a work-related issue. Better to make a request than a demand. And, of course, be prepared to back up your case with facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your ego might be hurt when a colleague turns down your offer to help. But accept it as a rejection of your offer, not of you. A friend from the past could re-emerge by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A flow of positive energy turns a work project you didn’t want to do into something you actually love doing. Now, take that attitude into your social, intimate life -- and enjoy what follows. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Working hard to meet your professional goals is fine. But don’t neglect your private life, especially where it concerns your more cherished relationships. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) “Patience” remains the key word in dealing with an emotionally sensitive situation involving a close friend or family member. Help comes your way by week’s end. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) With new information coming in, it’s a good time to rethink some of your goals without taking suggestions from others, no matter how wellmeaning they might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Making progress on your project is relatively easy in the early part of the week. A problem could arise midweek. But all goes swimmingly once it’s resolved. BORN THIS WEEK: Holding fast to your principles, no matter what, inspires others to follow your example. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.
