PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Auctions & Antiques ____________________20

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Your point about cats being at grave risk outdoors is just silly. Are there some dangers? Sure, there are. Small dogs are subject to the same dangers, as well as all the other animals that live outdoors. Are you suggesting that we should keep all snakes, hedgehogs, frogs, mice and turtles inside at all times because it’s a dangerous world outside? I dare say not! There is always going to be a bigger animal outside. All animals are free. It is us, as humans, who put the boundaries on animals and cage them in. Do you think that cats didn’t exist centuries ago? Of course, they did! How do you think they survived? They learned how to survive. Is it important to help those animals in need of a comforting shelter, good food and lots of love? Yes! But please don’t cage in the freedom they need in order to survive for centuries to come. -Ellen I., via email

DEAR ELLEN: Those are ... interesting points. You’re right, I do harp on the importance of keeping cats inside. And for that matter, small and large dogs. And, if they are being kept as pets, snakes, hedgehogs, frogs, mice and turtles. Why? Because it keeps them exponentially safer and healthier. Staying inside reduces the chance of getting ticks and fleas. It keeps them safe from attacks by other domestic animals, coyotes, as well as (in my neck of the woods, New England) packs of wild turkeys. Keeping cats inside protects other wildlife -- cats are hunters, and they love catching songbirds, hedgehogs, snakes, frogs, mice and turtles.

We adopted Boots 2 years ago. He loves his adopted family. He has a huge barn to explore and woods where he can climb trees. He keeps all the mice and squirrels out of the yard. Best of all, he likes looking out the window, watching birds at the feeder. In the house he can lay and sleep anywhere he wants, even in drawers. “I love my family; I am one lucky cat.” Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Bacteria Are to Blame for Stinky Shoes, Feet

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

Henrietta

---

20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: My nephew has foot odor. Even after showering, his feet have a bad odor. His shoes smell bad and have to be replaced often. What is the remedy for this problem? -- B.C. ANSWER: Foot odor is caused mostly by bacteria living on your feet. Bacteria thrive in warm and moist environments, so people who sweat a lot from their feet are at high risk. Some people are also colonized with particularly bad bacteria, such as Kytococcus (formerly Micrococcus), Corynebacterium or Dermatophilus. These bacteria do not cause disease, but they break down dead skin cells into unpleasantly smelly chemicals. A careful look at the skin on his feet may reveal small pits in the skin, especially around the heel, after a long day in socks and shoes. Treatment may include disinfecting skin solutions (such as chlorhexidine), antibiotics (topical erythromycin or clindamycin) and keeping the feet as dry as possible. This may require application of antiperspirants to the feet, either regular over-the-counter or prescription varieties. He also should wear lighter, more breathable footwear. Washing (and then drying) the feet several times daily and putting on new socks each time may also help during the treatment phase. Although ultraviolet-light shoe sanitizers exist, I’d recommend getting new footwear while trying to get rid of as much of the bacteria as possible.

Different types of treatment are available for patients with breast cancer. Some treatments are standard (the currently used treatment), and some are being tested in clinical trials. A treatment clinical trial is a research study meant to help improve current treatments or obtain information on new treatments for patients with cancer. When clinical trials show that a new treatment is better than the standard treatment, the new treatment may become the standard treatment. Patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. Some clinical trials are open only to patients who have not started treatment.

Many men and women who have gone off to study and work in different cities have eventually come back to their own communities to help them with many different challenges. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.

Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.

HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WET ROADS Drive slowly. Many fall road trippers are already driving slowly so they can fully enjoy the fall scenery. But it’s important that drivers slow down even more when encountering wet roadways, as driving slow can reduce the risk of a vehicle hydroplaning. When vehicles hydroplane, they slide uncontrollably on wet surfaces as the tires rise up on the water covering the roads. AAA notes that tires on vehicles driving as slow as 35 miles per hour can still lose some contact with the road, so drivers should maintain low speeds when driving on wet roads and reduce their speeds even further during heavy rains.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 13, 1957, the science-fiction thriller “The Amazing Colossal Man” premieres in theaters. The film revolved around an Army officer who began to grow uncontrollably after he strayed too close to an atomic blast in the Nevada desert. * On Oct. 14, 1968, the U.S. Defense Department announces that the Army and Marines will be sending about 24,000 men back to Vietnam for involuntary second tours because of the length of the war. The decision badly hurt troop morale and the combat readiness of U.S. forces around the world. * On Oct. 15, 1991, after a bitter confirmation hearing, the U.S. Senate votes 52 to 48 to confirm Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court. President George Bush had nominated the 43-year-old Thomas, an African American judge known for his conservative beliefs.

Kerry was born July 3rd, 1957 in Dansville, the son of Donald and Dolores ‘Dee’ (Levey) Pebbles. Kerry grew up and remained a life resident of the Wayland area. Kerry loved to socialize with all, especially at the campground and played computer games. Kerry and Cathi Feeley were married August 13, 1987 and together celebrated over 34 years of marriage. However, Kerry’s legacy was his willingness to give to and help others. He dedicated his entire life to police work and law enforcement. Kerry’s compassion and kindness was reflected in his work and his willingness to treat everyone with respect and dignity and yet still get the job done. Kerry worked for many different police organizations throughout the local area including: Dansville PD, Bath PD, Steuben County Sheriff ’s Department, and was a past chief of both Wayland and Cohocton Police Departments. Kerry wore many hats! He was a mentor to many and always would give, give and give more with expectations of nothing in return. Next to the word “humble” in the dictionary, you will find Kerry D. Pebbles. Kerry was predeceased by his parents, Don and Dee Pebbles; his brother-in-law, Brad Feeley and his niece, Valerie Knopp. He is survived by his wife, Cathi Pebbles of Wayland; his sons, Kody (Elora) Pebbles of Bismarck, ND and Kyle (Megan) Pebbles of Madrid, NY; his grandchildren, Aidan and Luke; his brother, Kevin ( Janet) Pebbles of Wayland; his nephews, Dylan Pebbles of Greece and Sean Pebbles (Casey Fick) of Canandaigua; his aunts, Vera Levey of Mt. Restoring shine to flooring involves making sure the floor is clean. Dirt and grime can diminish the color and look of flooring. Homeowners are urged to use products designed for their particular flooring material, such as wood, laminate, stone, or vinyl. Products oftentimes are not interchangeable. Begin by thoroughly sweeping or vacuuming the floor. Clean along all surfaces of the floor, including under furniture where dust and dirt tends to accumulate. Use the hard-floor setting on a vacuum to avoid having the brush rolls scratch or damage the flooring. Laminate can scratch easily and hardwood flooring is not impervious to dings and scratches. Quite often a dry mop or a static-charged mopping cloth effectively picks up debris left behind on many flooring surfaces. Although many commercial cleaners can clean flooring, homemade mopping solutions are sometimes just as effective. Keep in mind that wood, laminate and vinyl should not be soaked in water. A little liquid can go a long way on these surfaces. Water and other liquids can seep between laminate and wood boards, potentially contributing to swelling and damage over time. Also, resist the urge to use too much soap. Soap can leave behind a residue that dulls the finish of the floor. Vinegar-based solutions can work well on a wide variety of flooring types and help cut through any sticky residue left behind from cooking, cleaning and the activities of daily life. Many wood-flooring cleaners and polishes are oil-based to condition the wood in the process. Whenever making one’s own solution, test a small amount in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it will not damage the flooring. Page 17

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment are generally urged to avoid vaccinations other than the flu shot, though that conventional wisdom may not be applicable in relation to the COVID-19 virus. The ACS notes that vaccines require an immune system response to work effectively, and cancer patients’ immune systems may not be able to produce an adequate response to vaccines during treatment. That can make vaccines, including those for COVID-19, less effective. However, while traditionally cancer patients have been urged to avoid vaccinations during treatment, the ACS notes that cancer patients, due to fragile immune systems resulting from both their disease and the treatments for it, are at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. As a result, doctors may still advise their patients to receive the COVID-19 vaccination even during treatment, as having some measure of protection against the virus may still be better than having none at all. No two cancer patients are the same, so those concerned about COVID-19 and the vaccinations against it are urged to discuss those concerns and their options with their cancer care team.

SISTERS TOGETHER: MOVE MORE, EAT BETTER (NAPSI)—Obesity is a serious health problem in the United States. More than one in three U.S. adults have obesity and that number increases to more than half—57 percent—among U.S. black women. Research has shown that excess weight may contribute to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and certain kinds of cancer.

Twin Tiers ELECTRIC Serving Livingston & Steuben Counties

To help address the problem of obesity, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has updated the program guide for the popular Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better national health awareness program. It encourages black women to reach and maintain a healthy weight by being more physically active and making healthier food choices.

Residential -Fully Insured Call 607-382-2826

The NIDDK updated the Sisters Together program guide to include:

HOW TO RAKE LEAVES M ORE EFFICIENTLY

• Recent data regarding African American obesity rates

Remember to rake dow nw ind. It is a good idea to save raking for a day w hen it is not too breezy; otherw ise, you may end up raking the same spots over and over. Handle small spots at one time and rake the leaves into small piles. Then you can easily transfer the leaves to a tarp or bag and set aside for disposal or deposit them into your compost heap.

• Evidence-based strategies to promote regular physical activity and healthy food choices among black women • Highlights from Sisters Together programs developed by different groups around the country • Tips to create a budget to fund a program • Information on how to grow and manage program interest using social media • Steps to help evaluate and sustain a program • A sample in-kind donation request letter and other forms. The NIDDK encourages anyone who sees a need in his or her community to consider starting a Sisters Together program. The program guide is a free digital resource, available from the NIDDK website, that offers information on how to develop, promote, fund, evaluate and sustain a program. The guide includes sample forms, e-mails and social media posts that users can copy and modify to suit their specific needs. While the resources are aimed at black women ages 18 and older, they can be adapted to promote the “move more, eat better” message among women, youths or men of any age, race, ethnicity or community. Sisters Together began in 1994 as a pilot program conducted by the NIDDK’s Weight-control Information Network (WIN) and several partners in Boston. Based on the success of the pilot program, WIN created the program guide and other resources to support the development of local Sisters Together programs nationwide. Over the past 20 years, local groups across the country have formed partnerships with health centers, local media, recreation centers and other groups to start new Sisters Together programs. Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Town of Cohocton Residents I’m running for a position on the Town Board. I am a life-long resident of the Village of Cohocton and have always been a strong proponent of the benefit of living in Cohocton, the beauty of the area, and the possibilities for growth of the area. I see the value of our local protective organizations and was honored to be part of the ambulance service for several years. I have been active in various community organizations and in my church. As a Board member, I will attend all meetings and be prepared to discuss issues. I will work with the supervisor and other Board members for the benefit of the entire community, not just the Village. I will appreciate your vote on Nov 2nd. Find me at the bottom of the ballot, but let me be your first choice.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

Wayland Joint Fire District 2022

BUDGET HEARING Tuesday, October 19, 2021 7PM WAYLAND FIREHOUSE 14 East Naples Street Wayland, New York

By JoAnn Derson * Here’s a tip for you waist-watchers out there: Wait until Halloween Day to buy the candy. That way the inhouse sweets won’t be haunting you throughout October. -- JoAnn * Now’s the time to install weatherstripping or caulk for fall and winter. To find drafts, try this trick: Light a taper candle and run it very slowly along the cracks of your windows. When you see the flame flicker, that’s where you have a draft leak. * A great use for those old knee-high stockings (no runs!): Stuff with a mix of crystalized kitty litter and scent-boosting beads you can find in the laundry aisle. Stuff these in stinky shoes to freshen and deodorize. The litter wicks away moisture from sweaty feet and deodorizes, and the scent boosters last for a good long while. * “Here is a sewing tip for your column: I prewash fabrics that tend to shrink before I use them to make clothing items. That way, the fit is more accurate.” -- G.V. in Indiana

Town of Wayland Budget Workshop Agenda: 2022 Town Budget

October 13, 2021

* “Exfoliation can be easy if you already have a bag or jar of Epsom salts. Soak in a warm bath and rub the salts over your skin to gently scrub dead skin away. A little essential oil might help, too!” -- D.D. in Florida * “To keep sauces from splattering and dirtying the inside of your microwave, cover the food with a damp paper towel or a coffee filter.” -- E.C. in Utah * Now you can have your tea and clean something, too. Teabags can be used to clean woodwork. Rub the wood softly with a damp bag.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Just Hang Up! It’s time for us to be rude on the phone. There, I’ve said it. “Seniors are often targeted because they tend to be trusting and polite.” So says the FBI’s website page describing scams aimed at seniors. I’ve thought this for a long time, having done informal polls among friends, but now it’s official. Additionally, says the FBI, we’re targeted because we have savings, own a home and have good credit, which makes us attractive to scammers. We have the money -- they want it. But scammers are tricky. On that FBI page is a video of a former FBI director who, along with his wife, was targeted in a scam. Of all people who should have instantly realized what was going on, he was one. It was his wife, listening in the background, who made the connections. In the end, even after multiple ugly physical threats, the director didn’t cave in. The scammer went to jail, of course. But it points out how vulnerable we often are, especially when faced with sweet-talking scammers who are offering us a lot of money ... and who then switch over to threats if we don’t immediately do as they say and either send them money or give them access to our accounts. Whether it’s a tech support scam (“Your computer has a virus and we can fix it”) or a grandparent scam (“Your grandson is in jail and needs money for bail”) or a lottery scam (“You’ve just won $5 million”), it’s all the same -- a scam. To protect ourselves, we need to hang up the phone instantly when there is a likely scammer on the other end. Yes, when we were growing up, this kind of behavior would have been considered rude. But this is a whole new world, and it’s full of bad people who think we are trusting. We’re not, right? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Wren lesson You learn something new every day! Anyway, I did have fun watching the nest-building, even though the wrens never did occupy the nest in the Penny Saver tube. Now, I guess I can take down the note I posted and remove the twigs. I’m an incidental bird watcher, and I appreciate the info. By the way, thanks to all the carriers who avoided the Penny Saver tube!

S E V RA Hurrah for vaccinated healthcare workers! Thank you for getting vaccinated! It means so much to people, and it makes us more comfortable around our doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers. You did the right thing for your community. Kindness does matter I was so sad to hear about the child’s experience with some other children at the park. It’s possible it’s because of the Covid issues, but it’s sad that this happened. Our granddaughter only has one sibling who is much too old to play, so she’s mostly by herself and longs for children around her age with whom to play. Covid has found so many ways to destroy our lives. All this sadness just breaks my heart. I’m sure she will find friends soon as I believe most who live here are quite friendly. Our granddaughter is four, and she doesn’t give up on finding friends. She continues to seek friends when she’s at the parks, so they may meet sometime. Tell your granddaughter that she will make friends and may find a friend or two for life. Happy days are ahead. God Bless!

Awesome Doctor & Techs Words aren’t enough to express thanks and awesome job to the York Animal Hospital. My Doxie,Symon, went paralyzed in the hind quarters. I called the clinic, and we took him on an emergency call. When we arrived, they were ready for him. We had Dr. King. Awesome job, Dr. King! We know it was serious. With her help, advice, and therapy by her and by Symon’s mom, Symon has recovered a lot. He’s now walking and running. This all happened three months ago. What a great job Dr. King and staff--including registration and the check-in lady-did! This could have come out as a sad ending, but it is a happy ending. A huge thanks; you are all so awesome! God bless you all! - Symon’s Mom Good Samaritan On September 20th, I fell outside the Christmas Tree Shop in Henrietta. I would like to thank Dave who got me up and made sure I was all right. Thank you, My Good Samaritan, and may God always be with you. Thank you!

No dogs here! I have lived here for a very short time. I must say that this complex is a very good place to be. Everyone helps each other. There are a few complainers, but thankfully, there aren’t many. The complex manager is very efficient and very helpful. I’m sorry for the people who feel this place is “going to the dogs.” I like that we can meet each other, and we get to go to lunches thanks to the manager. I know that whatever problem I have or anything I may need has always been very quickly taken care of. So keep your complaining to yourself, and let’s all enjoy what we have. Zero, not hero You took yourselves from hero to zero! You aren’t an enemy; you just show you do not care. Any good healthcare worker would not want to hurt a patient in any way. By not getting vaccinated, you are possibly passing Covid on to them. What if you pass Covid to a child, and that child passes away? Are you ok with this? We aren’t! A good healthcare worker would not want this. Perhaps this job isn’t the one for you. Retire or quit please. I do not want unvaccinated people near me at any time!

In today’s competitive job market, individuals need to channel all possible assets to get ahead. Working more efficiently and improving productivity can be an advantage to anyone.

THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB Don’t shirk responsibilities. It can be tempting to slack off when another job awaits. The popular job-hunting site Monster.com says it can be human nature to do less when long-term accountability is removed. However, you never know when you might need a referral or even a new job. Leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of your employer at the end of your work history can put a black mark on your employee record.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

“Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t waste energy trying to cover up failure. Learn from your failures and go on to the next challenge. It’s OK to fail. If you’re not failing, you’re not growing.” –H. Stanley Judd

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners. EMPLOYMENT

(607) 324-7740 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. College students are no longer just young men and women who begin pursuing degrees right out of high school. In fact, the number of adults returning to the classroom has increased considerably, often making younger students the exception rather than the rule, says the college financial planner Straighter Line. According to the U.S. Department of Education, college students 25 years or older comprise 40 percent of all students enrolled in college. Adults who are thinking about returning to school are urged to fill out the free applications for student aid to see if they qualify. Grants and scholarships may be available, and some workers find that employers may match funds or offer some assistance to finance job training courses. Many schools now offer online courses that make it easier for working adults to pursue their degrees. Many working adults are returning to school to pursue new or advanced degrees, as more colleges and universities are facilitating such pursuits. EMPLOYMENT

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.
