SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Only make what guests are likely to eat. Hosts also should not feel pressured to cook more food than is necessary. Holiday meals have a tendency to be lavish, but hosts don’t have to spend all day in the kitchen preparing food that will likely end up as leftovers or trash. Get a final headcount in the days before everyone comes over and adjust your recipes accordingly.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The ancient Romans used swan fat or donkey milk to soften wrinkles, while sores and freckles were treated with the ashes of snails. * Eskimos use refrigerators to stop their food from freezing. * Disney’s musical fantasy comedy “The Princess and the Frog” led to an unexpected salmonella outbreak in the United States. More than 50 children were hospitalized after the film’s release when they attempted to free handsome princes with a kiss from what turned out to be perfectly ordinary, definitely non-prince frogs. * Redheads produce more vitamin D than other hair colors.

How to show your support for veterans
S
upporting veterans is a worthy endeavor at any time of year, though such efforts tend to be more prominent in November. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 in honor of the millions of individuals across the United States who are military veterans. The day coincides with holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries and also honor military veterans. There’s no denying that veterans need the support of the people whose freedoms they protect. According to a 2021 study from researchers at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the percentage of veterans with disabilities is significantly higher among post-9/11 veterans (40 percent) than it was with veterans from previous eras (25 percent for Gulf War I veterans and 13 percent for veterans of previous wars). Veterans can benefit from support legislated by elected officials in Washington, D.C., but there’s also many things ordinary citizens can do to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices veterans and their families have made and will make in the years to come. • Visit wounded veterans. The United States Census Bureau reports that more than one-third of the nearly 3.8 million men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces since September 2001 have a service-connected disability. Many of these individuals are fighting to overcome physical injuries sustained while on active duty. Individuals who want to show their support for veterans can contact their local Veterans Affairs (VA) facility to arrange a visit to wounded veterans. Such visits can lift veterans’ spirits and reassure them that their sacrifices are both acknowledged and appreciated. • Support legislation that supports veterans. Though it might seem like a no-brainer, legislation to support veterans often faces an uphill battle to get passed. By supporting legislation that ensures veterans get the support they need, individuals can send a message to veterans that they haven’t been forgotten and that the very democratic principles they fought to protect are alive and well. Citizens can write letters to their elected
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
officials, urging them to support veteran-friendly legislation, and raise awareness of bills and laws through social media. • Help raise awareness about homeless veterans. Data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that approximately 40,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. But that figure doesn’t tell the whole story, as the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans notes that, over the course of a year, roughly twice that many veterans experience homelessness. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) believes that programs to assist homeless veterans should focus on helping them reach a point where they can obtain and sustain gainful employment. In addition, the NCHV feels that the most effective programs are community-based, nonprofit, “veterans helping veterans” groups. Individuals can offer their support to such groups through financial donations or other means so they can continue to ensure no veteran sleeps on the street. Veterans Day is a time to show veterans that their service and sacrifices are not taken for granted. Visiting wounded veterans and supporting efforts to ensure veterans get what they need to live full, healthy and happy lives is a great way to send the message that veterans are appreciated.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Behaving well around service animals
Penny Saver
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you kindly remind your readers that service animals and companion animals are not there for other people’s amusement? Too often, people who see a service dog in public will rush up and try to pet the dog or even hug them. Please educate them on the proper etiquette when they see a service pet. -- Janine D. in Syracuse, New York
Klondike is a 24 year
DEAR JANINE: Thank you for this timely reminder. Service animals are highly trained to provide assistance to their owners for specific health or mobility issues. Companion animals provide crucial emotional support to owners as well. With any pet, it’s not just good manners to ask before approaching or trying to touch them. It’s also a safe way to interact with pets and their owners. This is especially important with service and companion animals. They’re doing a job when out in public. For example, seizure alert dogs are trained to detect an approaching seizure and will gently warn their owners to get to a safe place. Mobility assistance dogs help owners maintain their balance, or with tasks like pressing buttons and opening doors. It isn’t always evident that they’re working, either. For example, you may see an autism support dog sitting or lying next to their owner. They’re not off duty; they’re helping their person stay calmer in a social setting. Some good behaviors around service animals include: -- Speak to the owner/handler, not to the animal. -- Don’t touch, talk to, feed or handle the service animal. -- Guide/service dogs have the right of way. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 16, 1959, the smash musical “The Sound of Music” opens on Broadway to the consternation of the real Maria von Trapp and her stepchildren. Nearly all of the particulars she related in her 1949 book, “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers,” were ignored by the creators of the musical.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT Be patient. Lifting too much weight or pushing yourself too hard on the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine will increase your risk of injury. This is especially true for men and women working out for the first time or after lengthy stretches of inactivity. Men and women who are elderly, inactive and/ or overweight are likely to suffer from poor balance because their muscles are weak. Those muscles can be strengthened over time, but remain patient and stick to light weight during initial workouts so lack of balance does not lead to pain or injury. Take the same approach with aerobic exercise to prevent muscle strains and pulls. Increase weight and the intensity of cardiovascular exercises as muscles gradually strengthen and become accustomed to exercise. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

HOMETOWN TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Hyaluronic Acid Can Improve Joint Pain, but Isn’t Recommended ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend recommended hyaluronic acid for joint pain in my wrist and hand. I have been taking 180 mg once a day for a couple months now and have experienced notable success. I also feel that my neck pain and range of motion in my neck have improved. My question is, what exactly is hyaluronic acid? Is it safe, and are there any side effects I should be aware of? -- T.E. ANSWER: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance composed of long strings of sugar. Because of this structure, it carries a great deal of water, so it acts as a shock absorber and lubricant for several places in the body, including the joints. Hyaluronic supplements are usually purified from chicken cartilage, but can also be produced by bacterial fermentation. The body makes about 5,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily. Multiple studies on injections of hyaluronic acid have shown that it is only slightly better than a placebo at treating arthritis, especially of the knee. I have stopped recommending injection treatments to my patients with knee arthritis, as they are quite expensive. Oral hyaluronic acid, however, is inexpensive. There have been several small studies showing benefit (again, mostly for the knee rather than the neck), but I couldn’t find any well-done large studies that were convincing. There is very little harm from hyaluronic acid. None of the studies I’ve read found any serious side effects; however, that doesn’t mean it is completely safe, since supplements aren’t regulated the way prescription medicines are. But I can conclude that oral hyaluronic acid is possibly effective and probably safe for treatment of osteoarthritis. The studies have mostly used doses in the 100-200 mg range, but I have seen supplements for sale that have 20 mg or less of hyaluronic acid. I’m glad you are taking a similar dosage to what is shown to be effective. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Magic Maze SLEEP, GLORIOUS SLEEP STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * While filming “Jailhouse Rock” in 1957, Elvis Presley inhaled his tooth cap as he slid down a pole in the opening dance number. It lodged in his lung and required surgical removal, but aside from a little hoarseness for a few days, the King made a fairly easy recovery. * The popular kids’ game “Operation” was invented by John Spinello, a sophomore at the University of Illinois in 1962, as part of a class assignment. Sadly, he only made $500 off the game after selling the prototype. * By the way, in case you’ve ever wondered, the “patient” in “Operation” is named Cavity Sam.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY
GENERAL CONTRACTING
One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Hidden issues: Contractors may uncover all sorts of issues that need to be addressed before a project can progress. Examples include the presence of asbestos (common in older homes), plumbing problems, incorrectly wired electrical systems, and leaks or moisture issues. These problems also can impact the cost of the project, so set aside some money in the budget for unforeseen expenses. Chances are you are going to need some extra money to handle a few surprises during the project.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING STORING TOOLS PROPERLY REDUCES INJURY RISK AND PROMOTES ORGANIZATION Whether homeowners have a handful of tools or an entire collection of equipment, proper storage of these items means the difference between staying organized and safe or having to waste time looking for tools and running the risk of injury. Tools often gravitate to other rooms of the house or become misplaced. When they’re brought out for use, tools may not be returned to the toolbox or shed, taking up residence in drawers or closets or just being left out in the open. Improper storage of tools also may create safety risks for the persons doing the renovation and other members of the household. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that hundreds of thousands of injuries treated at emergency rooms are related to power tools and workshop equipment. While the majority of these injuries occur while using the tools, improper tool storage can still cause injury. By taking care of tools and keeping them orderly, homeowners can lengthen the life expectancy of their tools and reduce the likelihood of tool-related injury.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 12, 1864, Union Gen. William T. Sherman orders the business district of Atlanta destroyed before he embarks on his famous March to the Sea. Nearly 40% of the city was left in ruin.
Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

SHOPPING LOCALLY
It Matt ers
I
t matters where you shop. Where you spend your hard earned money. Your local merchant is working just as hard to earn your money. And when you choose to not support your local merchant and shop outside your community or county, you’ve robbed yourself of the benefits of your money staying where you live. THINK LOCAL, especially at this gifting time of year. Make it a Merry Christmas for all of us because, ‘it matters!’
The feel-good factor Doing for others certainly has an impact on the person on the receiving end, but also benefits the do-gooders. A November 2020 survey by Union Bank found that 72 percent of Americans said supporting small businesses was more important than getting the best deals. That may be due to the feeling of helping out a fellow neighbor.
Create job opportunities Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, along with their employees. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. That’s also true in Canada, where 68.8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she - or a relative - will need a job. Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals.
Keep more money in the community The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. Spend the same $100 at a national retailer and only $14 stays.
Enjoy a more local flavor National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses may also be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains.

Here’s a Tip * “For that nagging toilet where the chain on the flush lever keeps getting stuck, here’s what I do: Trash that chain and use some curling ribbon. Tie it on and adjust the length. Once you’ve got it set, you shouldn’t have to mess with it again for a very long time!” -- M. in Minnesota * Need pumpkin pie spice? Mix 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves for each teaspoon needed. * “Clearance aisles and sales are a savvy shopper’s best friend. I buy age-appropriate games and toys all year from sales rack and with coupons, so that I am always armed with birthday presents and donations to holiday drives.” -A.P. in Pennsylvania * Here’s a great cooking hint: When you want to sear meat, make sure you pat it dry using either paper towels or a kitchen cloth specifically for that purpose. Any moisture on the meat will cause it to steam cook. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING FOR THOSE WHO SEEMINGLY HAVE IT ALL Consolidate memories. Technology continues to evolve, which means that the way music, videos and photos are captured and stored is always changing. Unless a person has older gear, it’s no longer possible to watch a VHS tape featuring a family member’s graduation ceremony or reprint photographs that are on film negatives. However, shoppers can work with a company that will transfer media onto a new format, such as a thumb drive or in a cloud-based account. This can be a heartfelt gift for someone who wants to reminisce.

ecently I was having breakfast with friends, one of whom volunteers at the local Canandaigua hospice. Knowing my interest in aviation, she told me of a resident who had an interesting life in aviation. His name is Millard Harmon, and I was intrigued by what she had to say. My friend arranged a meeting which I anticipated would be just an informal talk about flying. When I walked into Mill’s room and saw a very large photo of an airplane on the wall, I knew I was in the presence of an aviator. Harmon had an extensive flying background including achieving over 150 aviation records, and he has a connection to our museum. I realized an article for the newsletter needed to be written. Millard reluctantly gave up flying at age 82 (he’s now in his 90s). He’s had a very fruitful love affair with aviation after getting his license at age 17. After attaining his license, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1944 and served as a crew chief. During his enlistment he managed to get some flight time on the AT-6. Once out of the military he completed a Doctorate program in Education Administration at Boston University after, in partial fulfillment of the degree program, he studied in the USSR. Among his educational accomplishments, he sent the first group of SUNY students to study Russian language and culture in the USSR. He also established SUNY’s aviation program allowing students to work toward a Private Pilot license. Millard has consulted with US Steel, Ford Motor Company, and Aeroflot (Russia’s state-owned airline). He retired in 1983 to devote his time to the benefits of general aviation – Millard Harmons Wings of Friendship safe, efficient, and a in hangar means of extending good will and humanitarianism throughout the world. He did this through the purchase of a Beechcraft 36, a 6-seat single engine propeller airplane with 285 horsepower. He used it for “friendship flights” while setting speed records. The airplane has been flown to Europe, the USSR, Africa, the Caribbean, and of course throughout the USA.
Dr Millard Harmon
Cuba. Because of the US trade embargo at the time, the plan was to fly to the Cayman Islands and then transfer the medicine from there to Havana. However, while enroute, the Beech developed engine problems and he was forced to divert to Cuba. He offloaded the medicine and then ran into problems with US authorities who did not believe his story about the diversion. In the end, the authorities confiscated his aircraft, and he was forced to pay $34,000 in fines to get it back. At one time Harmon lived in the Geneseo area while keeping a previously owned airplane at Perry-Warsaw. While in Geneseo, he helped build the runway the National Warplane Museum uses today. Millard loved flying and equally loved using it for the welfare of all. He opened the way for general aviation pilots to fly into the USSR and brought American goodwill all over the world. “Those of us who love flying can’t get enough of it,” Harmon said. Dr. Millard Harmon was a retired academic administrator who operated a small independent think tank in Delmar, NY. POLL According to House Beautiful, in Victorian times, Christmas trees were traditionally set up and decorated quite late in December, often on Christmas Eve. Today, the marketing blitz seems to start at or before Halloween. Psychologists say decorating early spikes people’s happy hormone, dopamine, so perhaps decorations help make/keep people happy longer. If you decorate for Christmas, when do you decorate your home? - Early November - After Thanksgiving - At first snowfall - Early December - Christmas Eve - Whenever I feel in the mood

Kudos to Honeoye Central PTA On Friday, October 27th, the Honeoye Central PTA hosted a Trunk n Treat in the parking lot in front of the school. Weather was ideal and so, so many turned out with their children to trick n treat. Thank you to the PTA, the parents that had their vehicles decorated, Richmond Recreation Department, and to the Richmond Fire Department, who all were passing out treats to the many, many children that came. The Honeoye Community should be proud of themselves for making that night perfect from start to finish. Looking forward to next year.
Taunting Neighbors I clean up the leaves by our property line. The neighbors come through after I clean and push their leaves into the area I just cleaned, on my side of the property line. They do this repeatedly every single year, sometimes several times a week. Every time I clean they purposely push their leaves into my yard. They do it solely to taunt me. Guess what, ladies? I’m not stooping to your level. Blow all your leaves into my yard. I don’t care. The joke is on you. Your behavior reflects on you. Not me. Speeders To all the drivers that speed down [local road] with their loud vehicles, get a life. We have walkers and bicyclists who walk and ride all day on this road and you are endangering them along with other drivers who obey the law. You think your loud vehicles are cool, but guess what, they are not. So why don’t you go hang out in the kiddie park where you all belong because none of you should have a license. Hopefully the police will read this and start handing out tickets on [local road] and stop you morons from injuring someone or god forgive KILLING THEM. NAPLES CENTRAL SCHOOL is looking to fill the following positions: BUILDING MAINTENANCE MECHANIC: Full-Time position. Hours: 6am - 2:30pm (including ½ hour unpaid lunch) Minimum Qualifications: Either 1. One year of experience as a journeyman plumber or HVAC technician; OR 2. Four years of experience in either plumbing, electrical, or heating, ventilating, and air conditioning or graduation from an accredited two-year school in HVAC or plumbing. Special Requirement Position: Possession of a valid New York State Operator's license is required. Salary: $18.70 to $30.70/hour dependent on experience Benefits: Health Insurance, Vacation, Sick and Personal Time
NIGHT CLEANER: WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base. NETWORKING IN THE DIGITAL AGE
GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Networking has long been a way for men and women to expand their professional horizons. Networking can keep professionals abreast of the latest goings-on in their industries and provide both immediate and long-term benefits.
Embrace relaxation methods. The APA recommends professionals coping with workplace stress embrace techniques that can effectively alleviate stress. Such techniques include meditation and deep-breathing exercises and can help workers develop their ability to focus purposefully on a single activity. That improved focus may help workers better navigate hectic working environments without succumbing to the stress such environments can produce.
Like many things in the business world, how people network has changed in the digital age. Embracing that change and making it work for you will likely involve changing how you network.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 15, 1777, after 16 months of debate, the Continental Congress, sitting in its temporary capital of York, Pennsylvania, agrees to adopt the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union. Not until March 1, 1781, would the last of the 13 states, Maryland, ratify the agreement. * On Nov. 11, 1885, George Patton, one of the great American generals of World War II, is born in San Gabriel, California. Patton was controversial, known to make eccentric claims that he was a direct descendant of great military leaders of the past through reincarnation. * On Nov. 13, 1953, a member of the Indiana Textbook Commission calls for the removal of references to the book “Robin Hood” from textbooks used by the state’s schools. She claimed that Robin Hood was a communist because he robbed the rich and gave it to the poor. * On Nov. 9, 1965, Roger Allen LaPorte, a 22-year-old member of the Catholic Worker movement, immolates himself in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York. Before dying, LaPorte, who was against war, declared that he did it as a religious act. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
