CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history.
Tis the Season _____________________6
Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits.
Vibes & Rants ____________________33
Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky. While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada. KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS Cut pre-cut trees before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they’ll need to make it through the season when they get home.

Move some furniture. If your main living space is small, consider moving some bulky furniture into a bedroom or office where guests won’t be spending time. Then make better use of the open living space by placing folding chairs or other accommodations to ensure there’s ample seating for everyone. A single recliner can only be enjoyed by one person, but removing it from a room may create enough space for as many as three folding chairs.
Popcorn garland: Garland made of popcorn is a classic handmade holiday project. For a new twist, toss the popcorn with food coloring and allow it to dry before stringing for some bright color on the tree.

2 0 2 1 PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Her Dog Won’t Stop Licking His Paws DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My hound dog “Charlie” licks his front paws nonstop, and sometimes his back paws, every time he lies down. He’ll lick the top of his paws and in between the pads. The skin on top of his paws is starting to get raw. I’ve checked his paws and can’t see any cuts or ticks. Why is he doing this, and how can I stop it? -- Lee F., Ocala, Florida DEAR LEE: Go ahead and schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. Charlie could be licking his paws for a few reasons. One, a physical injury or infestation -which you wisely checked for first. Two, an underlying condition that is causing Charlie discomfort, like a muscle or bone injury, or arthritis. Three, a compulsion to lick his paws. The vet should do some bloodwork to rule out underlying disease. He’ll do some other tests to determine if arthritis is a factor. And he’ll check for allergies, which can cause itchy skin in dogs. Depending on what he finds (or doesn’t find), the vet will help you plan a course of action to stop the licking. It’s important to stay on top of this because dogs who keep licking or biting at the same spot can develop lick granuloma. This is a red patch of skin that is sore and itchy, and a dog’s licking just makes it worse. Eventually, it can turn into a red lump of skin. The granuloma can become infected, requiring antibiotics to resolve. And if the granuloma doesn’t heal or gets really large, it may need to be removed surgically. Work with the vet to find the cause of Charlie’s discomfort and resolve it. Treatment may take a month or more, but it will be worth it. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There is symbolism in Disney’s Cinderella mosaic. The company says that “guests can see that each of Cinderella’s stepsisters appears with her own special facial tint. One sister displays a red tint to show that she is ‘red with rage,’ while the other sister displays a green tint to show that she is ‘green with envy,’ as they watch Cinderella try on the glass slipper to reveal a perfect fit.” * Sorry, but that cream filling in Twinkies isn’t cream at all -- it’s vegetable shortening. * Due to heat expansion of its iron, the Eiffel Tower can “grow” by up to 6 inches in the summertime. * Only a quarter of the Sahara Desert is sandy.
BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

percentage of orthopedic injury to the elderly is directly related to their falling while walking large animals, specifically dogs over 20 pounds. Can you shed light on this please? -- M.F. ANSWER: A March 2019 study in JAMA Surgery did identify dog walking as an increasing cause of fracture. Over 4,000 fractures were identified among dog walkers over 65 in 2017, about triple the number 10 years earlier. However, this wasn’t a large proportion of fractures (only about 2% of total fractures), and the authors did not identify the size of the dog as a risk factor, although they did suggest that clinicians recommend a smaller (and well-trained) dog as a wiser choice. Dogs not only provide some social support, they also encourage exercise. I have had many patients (and a few family members) who have very meaningful connections with their dogs and other animals. In fact, I have seen many people who describe their animal companions as the most important relationship in their lives. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am scheduled for a hip replacement operation because X-rays show joint failure. I am 81 years old and in excellent health. At the moment I do not feel any pain in my hip and am walking very easily. I go swimming three times a week. My question is whether I should agree to this operation as a preventive method to avoid later painful and possibly riskier circumstances because of my age. -- P.H. ANSWER: Hip replacement is indicated in people with severe, debilitating symptoms (such as pain or loss of function) despite conservative management. That doesn’t sound remotely like what you are describing. The findings on the X-ray are less important than your symptoms and function, so I could not recommend a hip replacement for you at this time. Age by itself is not a contraindication for hip replacement should you need one later on. I do understand what you are saying: You are less likely to have a surgical problem being operated on earlier. Some surgeons will operate on people with milder symptoms for this reason. However, you aren’t describing even mild symptoms, hence my recommendation against surgery at this time. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved Page 14

The human papillomavirus, often referred to as HPV, is a group of more than 150 related viruses. According to the American Cancer Society, HPVs are called “papillomaviruses” because some types cause noncancerous tumors known papillomas, or warts. Some types of HPVs are known to cause cancer, including those of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and parts of the mouth and throat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 79 million people in the United States are currently infected with HPV. HPV vaccines can be very effective, preventing infections that can cause six different types of cancer, but are most effective when administered to older children and teenagers. The ACS notes that doctors recommend boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12. In such instances, boys and girls will receive two doses of the vaccine six to 12 months apart. While the vaccine can be administered later, kids or even young adults who do not receive the vaccine when they are between the ages of 15 and 26 will need to receive three doses within an eight-month span.

Geneseo Boy Scouts to Hold 36th Annual Farm Toy Show & Auction and Honor Doug Harke BY GENESEO TROOP 4070, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
B
oy Scouts of America Troop 4070 of Geneseo, New York announces the 36th Annual Farm Toy Show and Auction will be held IN PERSON on Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4, 2021, at the Willow Creek Venue at 3100 Rochester Road, Lakeville, NY 14480. It is located one mile south of I-390 Exit 9 on Route 15. On Friday, December 3, the auction preview begins at 6PM and the consignment auction begins at 7PM. The Farm Toy Show will be Saturday, December 4, from 9AM to 2PM. Saturday has an early buyer’s option of $12 for 7AM admission or $5 general admission at 9AM onward. Kids 11 and younger are free! Refreshments will be available; face masks required. All proceeds benefit Troop 4070, including troop equipment, travel, camping, and training expenses. The Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction is the largest farm toy show east of Ohio. Vendors from over 35 states and Canada have participated in the event for the last 36 years. Long-time Boy Scout volunteer parent Doug Harke has led every event. Harke’s three sons were members of Troop 4070 when he held a small farm toy swap meeting in 1986. This is his thirty-sixth annual Farm Toy Show and Auction. “This is a family reunion,” says Harke. “We all greet each other by name.” “Our Scouts are the heart of the Farm Toy Show,” says Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout Bryan French. “They set up, unload, and expedite auction items. Our Scouts make it happen.” Geneseo Boy Scouts, Geneseo Kiwanis, and other local volunteers contribute over 500 service hours over the two-day event.
In 2020, Troop 4070 planned to cancel the toy show and auction due to COVID-19. Instead, Harke challenged its parent committee and its auctioneer to migrate the event online. He received over 400 shipments at his home and stored them all in his garage. Harke and the auctioneer photographed, weighed, and measured every item in the auction, and bundled them into lots. Then, the auctioneer set up the bidding platform and handled payments. Finally, the Scouts packaged and shipped items from Doug’s garage to virtual bidders and staffed Doug’s garage during designated pickup hours to thank buyers in person. Incredibly, the Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction was 100% in person in 2019 and 100% virtual in 2020, thanks to Harke’s leadership and commitment. Troop 4070 is humbled and amazed at his undaunted leadership in the Harke has restored a very rare Oliver face of the pandemic. 1850 front-wheel power assist industrial tractor
with a dozer blade as this year’s door prize! Geneseo Boy Scout Troop 4070 thanks Doug for his incredible persistence, the remarkable example of leadership and service he sets for our troop, and his efforts in raising over $200,000 over thirty-five years. The pandemic proved what the Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction truly is: not only an annual event, but also the annual in-person gathering of a community dedicated to farm toys and supporting our troop.
Over his thirty-five years of service, 80 Scouts in our troop have earned the rank of Eagle Scout. At an average of 250 hours per Eagle Scout project, this means that the Farm Toy Show has underwritten over 20,000 hours of community service from our Scouts to our community. In addition to service, the Boy Scouts create a generational legacy. Troop 4070 Eagle Scout Gregory Krapf earned his Eagle Scout rank on September 1, 1975. Eagle Scout Gregory Krapf became Dr. Gregory Krapf and is now the Scoutmaster for his former Scoutmaster’s grandsons! This is the perfect example of the legacy of Scouting and its capacity to impact generations. This is what thirtyfive years of the Farm Toy Show has made possible. Please join us in recognizing Doug Harke’s thirty-five years of service to our Scout Troop, our Geneseo community, and our nationwide Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction community.
The Harke Family at the Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction (L to R): Eagle Scout Doug Harke, Jr., Diana Harke, and Doug Harke.
Harke prints over 1,000 postcard invitations. The Troop applies address labels and stamps during a Troop meeting, and Harke takes an advertisement in Toy Farmer Magazine and Toy Tractor Times Magazine. The Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction went virtual in 2020. This year, Dann Auctioneers of Canandaigua will headline the auction Friday night, continuing a family tradition of over 20 years of service at the Farm Toy Auction. In addition, Harke has restored a very rare Oliver 1850 front-wheel power assist industrial tractor with a dozer blade as this year’s door prize. Although he will tell you he is just another former Scout parent, Doug Harke has been the driving force behind the annual Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction for thirty-five years and counting. Leading the event highlights Harke’s passion for farm toys, his nationwide network of farm toy collectors, his local community contacts, his career in education, and his garage to raise goodwill and several thousand dollars for Geneseo Boy Scout Troop 4070 every year, covering expenses for training, camping, food, travel, equipment, and community service activities.

BENEFITS OF LED HOLIDAY LIGHTS Energy savings: LED lights consume considerably less energy than incandescent lights, saving homeowners money on their energy bills, which can skyrocket in December thanks to interior and exterior holiday lighting displays using incandescent lights. In fact, the OEERE estimates that, by 2027, widespread use of LED lights could save consumers more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Christmas Dinner in a Parking Lot My senior center is going to hold its annual Christmas dinner outdoors in the parking lot. If that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye about the sad state of our world now, nothing will. Santa will arrive by limo behind the fire truck, we’re told, and will make his rounds through the tables set up across the asphalt, little elves at his elbow passing out presents. Students from the high school choir will sing while others from the culinary arts classes (they’ll get extra credit) will hustle the food and drinks outside and serve it. Parking will be wherever you find it around the neighborhood. In the middle of December? In New England? Why, some of us wanted to know, did they not simply use the town’s rec center? That large space would allow the tables to be spread out, with plenty of parking right outside the door. Best of all, it’s indoors where there’s heat. But no, they decreed, the dinner has to be next to the senior center where the kitchen is. A poll of friends indicates a mixed review of this whole idea. One laughed and said no, he absolutely would not be there. Another said he’d been recruited to set up tables and bring the decorated tree outside, hoping he can find an extension cord long enough to plug in the lights. One adventurous soul decided she will indeed be there, wearing a down comforter over her winter coat, which will be over several other layers of clothing, including snow pants. (She’s also bringing a Thermos of hot coffee and is practicing eating while wearing gloves.) One only hopes someone has put the town plow-truck driver on notice. He might be called upon to plow out the parking lot that day before the dinner. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Hi my name is King Leo! I’m a 2-year-old domestic tabby! I am a dashing young man, who happens to be the biggest mama’s boy known to man (I’ll deny it if you ever bring it up). I love stealing my baby sisters rocking chair and pretending it’s my throne! I might be the King of my home, but I also have great knight skills in sneak attacks! I protect, I attack, and most of all I snack. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. DON’T locate breakable ornaments close to the bottom of the tree in reach of young children. Glass can shatter and cause serious injuries.
* Blood pressure can be affected by many things, and seeing the doctor is one of them. Instead, request that your blood pressure be taken by a nurse or physician’s assistant. Having a full bladder also can make your pressure reading higher, as can positioning your arm below heart level.
* Visit the dollar store for low-cost toys to use on car or airplane trips. You can get several busy toys and dole them out one at a time. Most parents will attest to what a lifesaver this can be.

S E V RA Borg & Ide Imaging, Brockport I just went for my dreaded mammogram. I always go once a year to get it done. Aleshia was very kind and friendly during the test. She was kind enough to ask me if I was all right as she positioned me for the X-rays. Thank you for all of your hard work! See you next year! Thank you, kind and cheery lady! Thank you to the kind lady who materialized almost out of nowhere on October 22nd, 2021, and offered to help me carry a trunkload of boxes into the Stafford Post Office. Their combined weight came to over 125 pounds, and this angel cheerfully took the majority of them in. As a senior citizen, I was a bit apprehensive about how I was going to manage the task, and she was an answer to a prayer. My gratefulness to Sal, as well, for his efforts in getting them prepared for shipping. I will pay your kindness forward! Thank you from a Vet I'd like to recognize a true patriot and gentleman: Chuck Anderson. I've been going to Anderson's 56 Barber Shop for years. Chuck should be recognized for giving all Vets a free haircut on Veteran's Day. He refused all payments and tips. It sure made the Vets feel appreciated. - Truly Grateful, Woody Help for Afghan families Thank you, Livingston County residents, for your generosity in donating over 1,600 items of toilet paper, paper towels, bodywash, hand and dish soap and $500 in gift cards to Catholic Family Center for Afghan families. Sixty-five Afghan individuals have been welcomed to the Rochester area with another 30 individuals expected soon. CFC refugee staff have been working 6-7 days a week doing everything they can to welcome these families. Thank you for being so supportive.
Had to chuckle I nearly fell off my seat reading the Rant titled “What an Idiot!” First, why wouldn’t Joe Manchin be concerned about coal mining? His state of West Virginia’s livelihood depends on this very thing. He is doing what he feels is best for his state (unlike most governors). I’m glad Biden went to the summit without a deal. What a waste of money! But what really made me chuckle was “the earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in....” Give me a break; I’m 64 and have heard this my entire life. Seems like every 5 years or so, we only have a few more years! Climate change is phony; it’s political and a ploy to take away our livelihoods, money (taxation), and freedoms. One other thing: let’s impeach all Democrats and most Republicans as well; sure, we can start with Manchin. Trash Talk Whenever I take my walks in rural [local] County, I bring an empty garbage bag to pick up trash. Thought I’d already seen everything in that realm until today when I found a 7-foot-long fluorescent light tube discarded on the side of our road. Thankfully, it was still intact; if it was broken, the toxic mercury inside would’ve been released. That’s bad anywhere, but here that’s extra bad since we live in a watershed. The following information isn’t for the idiotic person responsible. Anyone that thoughtless wouldn’t bother reading this column. For those who do care about proper disposal, here are no-cost options. If you live in one of the four GLOW region counties (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming) you can take florescent tube bulbs to an annual Hazardous Waste Disposal collection. Also, at any time, you can do a drop-off at a Lowe’s store location. If you only have one or two bulbs, you needn’t make prior arrangements. If you have a large quantity of discards, call the store first. Idiotic You are foolish to be speeding through a small subdivision where I live and have two kids. You are gaining nothing and putting lives in danger. I can hear the tires squealing around the bend and the slamming on the brakes, and for what? To get home and turn on your TV? You’re a clown. They should tear up the road so your suspension gets destroyed as punishment for your stupidity.

IT!
Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.
Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.
Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.
Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.
Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.
Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

●
Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.
Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

To apply: http://www.a-d.us SHOW ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS THEY ARE APPRECIATED Business owners and bosses and high-level executives may have their names on placards or monogrammed stationery, but the most successful businesses tend to be those in which the entire staff, from the company president to administrative professionals and so on, works together. Administrative professionals, sometimes referred to as “admins,” handle everything from spreadsheet generation to PowerPoint presentations to preparing schedules. Admins are often the unsung heroes of the workplace, and while they may not receive much fanfare, without the continued efforts of admins, businesses may grind to a halt. In recognition of the roles they play, administrative professionals have been honored during a special week each April for the past 60 years. Called Secretary’s Day upon its inception in 1952, the holiday was later expanded and the name changed to incorporate all of the employees who play pivotal administrative rolls in companies big and small. Administrative professionals do a lot to keep companies afloat and operating smoothly. Supervisors, managers and other higher-ups can take every opportunity to show their appreciation to these hard, yet often unsung, workers.
Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marks a nearly 20 percent increase in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.

Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Recycle old equipment. Advancements in technology now occur at a breakneck pace, so the equipment businesses use today may very well be obsolete tomorrow. Businesses that want to be more eco-friendly should recycle rather than discard old equipment. Simply throwing equipment away might even be illegal depending on where an office is located. Some electronics contain mercury, lead or arsenic, hazardous materials that can do significant damage to the environment when not properly disposed of. Some retailers, including the office supply chain Staples, accept old equipment for recycling at their stores at no charge to business owners. If equipment is still functional but somewhat outdated, look into donating it to local organizations in need.
