GIFT IDEAS FOR LAST-MINUTE SHOPPERS Early bird shoppers may purchase and even wrap gifts before December, but eleventh-hour shoppers may need some help come the holiday season. For those last-minute folks, there still are plenty of ways to ensure your shopping list is checked off. The following gifts are quick to purchase and can still make for thoughtful presents. • Liquor or wine basket: Prepackaged spirits often come with decorative glasses and other accoutrements for entertaining. What’s more, they’re convenient to purchase if you’re on a time crunch. • Fueling station gift card: Drivers will appreciate a gift card to their favorite fueling station. Such cards suit anyone who has a car and frequently travels or commutes. • Food basket: A visit to the supermarket or a convenience center can yield many tasty finds that can be packaged together into a gift basket. Pair foods with a gift card to that retailer. • Streaming service: Offer to treat a loved one to a month or two of their favorite streaming television or movie service. If they already have streaming subscriptions, offer to cover the cost of the subscription for a few months. • Premade gifts: Don’t overlook your local pharmacy as a place to find convenient gifts. Look for unique items in the seasonal aisle, where you might be able to find stockingstuffer toiletries or cosmetic gifts that suit several people on your shopping list. Tis the Season

Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There could be an unexpected change in plans for your upcoming holiday travels. But keep in mind that a little flexibility goes a long way in resolving any disappointments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new relationship might not be responding quite as quickly as you’d hoped. Could you be expecting too much too soon? Try to ease up and let things happen at their own pace. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) As we approach the frenetic pace of pre-holiday planning, take time out now to reconnect with the wonderful people who share your life, especially the one who also shares your dreams. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A misunderstanding should be resolved before you get caught up in the flurry of holiday preparations. Set your pride aside and deal with it, regardless of who might have hurt whom first. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being told that a colleague might have been trying to undercut your effectiveness might or might not be true. Get all the facts before you even think about acting on this so-called information. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good idea to start your holiday preparation plans early in order to avoid a time crunch if an unresolved workplace situation causes a problem. That old friend might have some welcome news. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s actions continue to surprise you, but this time with positive results. Could be your wise counsel finally got through. It’s like having an early holiday gift, isn’t it? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your reluctance to act in a current situation could be traced to your inner self advising you to take more time to study its complexities before you attempt to deal with it. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Soothing hurt feelings before they can ignite an angry outburst is the wise thing to do. And, of course, when it comes to doing the “wisdom thing,” you do it so well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Budget your time so that you can handle both your workplace duties and your personal holiday planning -- including travel arrangements -- without burning out on either end. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might find that you still need to firm up one or two of those still-outstanding decisions so that you finally can move forward as you had planned. Weigh the facts, then act. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You usually don’t carry grudges, but you might feel this is one time when you’re justified in doing so. But aren’t you spending too much energy holding onto it? Let it go and move on. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of using your quiet strength to persuade people to follow their better instincts and do the right thing. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

It’s Lights, Camera, Action from Rochester to Buffalo By Amanda Dudek ost-Spider-man, a camera crew is once more filming in Western New York, but this time, it’s a little closer to home for some. Yesterday is Gone, featuring UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock and Christopher Bihrle, and directed by Joe Black, is a sequel to Grace is Gone, which filmed in 2016 and starred Shamrock, by a local cast and crew throughout Western New York.

P

the script and the improv. “He is very flexible with what works best, even if it goes off script,” shared Brown. “Everyone feels comfortable working under his direction.” Christopher Bihrle who acts and is even a collaborating writer, is no exception: “Bihrle is attached to his character, Jericho,” observed Brown. “He can relate to Jericho’s motivation because he, too, has children. If he feels Jericho would do something differently, he does it.” Brown clarified that although the film centers around themes of family connections and loyalty, its setting of a dystopian, gang-ruled future following a globally devastating plague, some violence and gore and its revenge-driven narrative is likely unsuitable for younger viewers. Nevertheless, Brown stated the film’s overwhelming theme is about family.

Main character, Jericho, played by Christopher Bihrle.

“We are all out of Rochester,” said Co-Producer Ashley Brown. “We want to create exposure for the Rochester area. Our producers, Brad Vollmer, JB, and Christopher Bihrle, have done several movies here locally, and we just started getting a cast and crew together for Yesterday is Gone six months ago.” The team, who casts many local actors and uses local talent on the crew, is looking currently looking to hire additional cast and crew. “There are so many talented people locally, and we hope to collaborate with all of them,” shared Brown. “We were out in Brockport filming Grace is Gone. We have also filmed in Downtown Buffalo and some of its warehouses, on a farm outside of Rochester and recently, at Corcoran Soybean Farms in Caledonia. “The soybean farm was one of my favorite locations,” Brown said. “It was such an interesting atmosphere. There were sheep and a dog, and we had to work with this live location, sometimes incorporating these things into the movie itself ”. While some may find this challenging, Brown enjoys it. “It is actually a very fun process,” she stated. “We were at the soybean farm for two weekends. We just started filming in the beginning of October, and we can be on set for 10-12 days. Each time, we have to set up the scene and make sure the camera angles are perfect for the way we want to shoot.” Still, Brown claims it is when the actors arrive that all the magic happens. “They know their characters so well they are able to think like they do and know how each would react,” she explained. “If they feel something is more natural for their character in a given moment, they will go off script and improvise; that’s the fun part!” Behind the scenes of Sometimes, the improvisation Taylor Day, who plays works best, and it takes a keen eye Ellie, in Buffalo, NY with to know when that is. “This film centers on a father who is willing to do whatever it takes to get revenge for his daughter’s death,” she explained. “Jericho is willing to risk everything for his family, and people relate to that: caring for and wanting what is best for their families.” Gravitas Ventures and Cut Entertainment plan to release Grace is Gone, filmed in 2016, on Video on Demand, DVD and Blu-Ray in January 2020, and is set to be followed by the debut Yesterday is Gone in 2021. “We are hoping local theaters will be interested in screening our movie,” said Brown. “This will help us promote the Greater Rochester and Buffalo areas. We are also offering sponsorships for screen, IMDB and social media credit.” As of now, the cameras are still rolling. “We are looking for additional local actors, actresses, extras, local businesses, a local junkyard and a local church in which to film movie scenes, and additional film crew, including audio help,” Brown stated. HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do. REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation a year ago. A week after that, I had an MRI that showed I’d had a ministroke and probably several others in the past. I love ribeye steak, and eat it maybe two or three times a year. Is this safe? -- R.A. ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation is a rhythm problem of the heart. The natural rhythm is lost, so the heartbeat becomes irregular. Because of the lack of normal movement in the heart, the blood can pool and form clots in the left atrium; these clots can travel downstream to lodge in a blood vessel. Clots can cut off the blood supply to the area where they lodge. It’s most critical when it happens in the brain, since if brain cells die, function is lost. A stroke is just a focal area of cell death in the brain. The size and location of the area in the brain where cell death occurs determines how significant the stroke is. Strokes can range from unnoticeable to devastating to fatal. Most people with atrial fibrillation take medication to reduce the risk of stroke. Eating poorly can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well, but most commonly this happens via a different mechanism. High amounts of saturated fat -- such as in ribeye steak, which is fattier than many cuts of beef -- increase the risk of damage to blood vessels through buildup of cholesterol plaques. These plaques cut off blood supply, and this causes a heart attack if the plaques are lodged in the arteries of the heart, a stroke if in the brain, and various problems if in other parts of the body. In people who have a history of stroke, it’s particularly important to take steps to reduce further risk. That means a discussion with your doctor about whether you are on the best treatment for atrial fibrillation and whether you have evidence of cholesterol plaques. Even if you don’t have any evidence of plaques, a healthy diet of mostly plants, with whole grains, nuts and seeds, some fatty fish (if you enjoy that) and sparse amounts of meats reduces many health risks. However, two or three steaks a year is not going to cause harm. The best data available shows that people who have 100 grams (just over 3 ounces) of red meat a week are at the lowest risk of developing blood vessel problems. It’s not clear that zero is better than that small amount. In any event, I am a firm believer that enjoying life is the goal. If having a steak a few times a year is truly enjoyable, the risk is small, and you should enjoy those meals without guilt. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the body’s rate of absorption for calcium? -- A. ANSWER: The textbook answer is 20% to 40%, but in reality, the answer is very complicated, as it depends on total body and intracellular calcium, vitamin D levels, presence of phosphates in food and other factors. The short answer is that it’s usually exactly what it needs to be when things work properly. If the body is deficient in calcium, then absorption is maximal, but still most calcium in food is not absorbed. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2019 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

How H ow P People eople W With ith L Low ow V Vision ision C Can an S Stay tay S Safe afe A nd d IIndependent nd depend dent And (NAPS)—People with low vision have blind spots that can make it difficult or impossible to drive, read or see faces. These impairments cannot be corrected by surgery or glasses. What’s more, too many are blind to the realization that much can be done to improve their quality of life. What Can Be Done In fact, low vision rehabilitation services help people make the most of the vision they have. The first step is to get an eye exam by an ophthalmologist, a physician who specializes in medical and surgical eye care. Who Can Help An ophthalmologist can determine the full extent of vision loss and exact location of blind spots. Either the ophthalmologist or a low vision specialist can then determine the best techniques and devices that can help you get around your individual challenges. Where EyeCare America Comes In If you’re concerned about the cost of the exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. This national public service program provides eye care through volunteer ophthalmologists for eligible seniors 65 and older; and those at increased risk for eye disease. As one EyeCare America patient said, “I’m a senior living on a low income. It had been 30 years since I’d had an eye exam. It was a true blessing to receive this service.” Low Vision Services Offer Hope The field of vision rehabilitation has advanced significantly over the years, offering more effective technologies and strategies. Today, ophthalmologists’ solutions range from simple, portable video magnifiers to enlarge text and objects to high-tech glasses with cameras that let people read text and see faces. In addition, there are many simple changes people can make on their own to help them live better: • Improve contrast. Contrasting colors can make it easier to accomplish household tasks and improve safety. Put dark place mats under white place settings, get area rugs that are a contrasting color with the floor and kitchen towels and cutting boards that contrast with the counter top. Use contrasting colored tape along the edges of rugs, stair steps and lamp shades. • Improve lighting. Every year, about three million older Americans are treated for injuries from falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these falls are caused by low vision. Add lighting to staircases and dark hallways. Remove rugs from hallways to prevent tripping. Task lighting in the kitchen can make food preparation safer and easier. • Reduce clutter and organize. A cluttered house is more difficult to navigate and can contribute to falls and frustration. When each item has a specific place and is identified with a high-contrast label, it’s easier to locate items needed for everyday living. • Embrace technology. Books on tape and personal voice-activated assistants, such as Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa, can be enormously helpful for people who can no longer see well enough to read, dial a phone or set a thermostat. With a simple voice command, these can phone dial a friend for you while the thermostat dials up the heat. While there isn’t one strategy or tool that works for every person, vision rehabilitation offers hope for many and can help people stay in their homes and continue doing the things they love. CROSSWORD

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 7, 1805, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, having made a difficult trip across the rugged Rockies, set up winter camp near the mouth of the Columbia River. They named it Fort Clatsop, after the local Indian tribe. * On Dec. 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, officially ending the institution of slavery, is ratified when Georgia votes to ratify. Mississippi, however, would not submit documentation to abolish slavery until 2013.

Sympathy Sayings You can address your card with “Dear” and sign off “With deepest sympathy”

Thank You!

•Sending you positive thoughts through this difficult time. I want you to know how special your family is to us and we are here for you.

The family of Ralph Wolfanger would like to sincerely thank everyone at Noyes who took care of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather on October 27th until his passing on October 29th. To the Emergency Department: You worked tirelessly to try and make him comfortable as he was failing and were so accommodating as more and more family arrived. You quickly got him to a point so he could be transferred upstairs. You demonstrated such a caring attitude and that meant so much to all of us. To the Third Floor: You were waiting for him as we got off the elevator to continue his care and try to stabilize him. You kept us informed and called anyone and everyone necessary to get him comfortable. When it became evident he would not recover he was transferred to Intensive Care. Your concern was calming to us and again we cannot emphasize how much that meant. To Intensive Care: Class Act! From the minute we arrived until our final moments the care was outstanding. The concern for the family (and there were a lot of us) was so thoughtful and so very much appreciated. You allowed us time with him and made us feel like we were at home with him. The always available fresh coffee, water and wondering if there was anything else you could do for us was so heartwarming. A special thank you to Becky Bowen and the cafeteria staff for the pizza on Monday; it truly made our night!

•At time like these it is best to lean on your faith and your friends. Whichever one is closer. Your __________ will be forever missed. •Words can not express the heartache we feel for you and your family. We hope you allow the love around you to help ease your pain. •The memories will last forever, but ___________ (deceased) spirit will sorely be missed. We are here for you whenever you want to reminisce about all the good times we shared together. •Your amazing spirit continues to shine through this time of loss. Stay strong, love does conquer all. •You are in our prayers. May your spirit focus on all the love around you during such a difficult time. •Take it easy on yourself right now. Time is the only thing that will help your heart sing again.

Although the three days were so devastating for us we would like you all to know how much easier you all made it for us. We can never thank you enough for everything you did and the excellent care our father received. Nothing surpasses “Hometown Hospital,” you should all be proud!

Sincerely, Marge & Larry Cansdale & family, Pam & Randy Cox & family, Tim & Nancy Wolfanger & family

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Avoid placing the tree near heaters or drafty windows. Many people know that placing a live tree near a potentially hot heating vent poses a fire hazard. But doing so also can dry out the tree, decreasing the chances it will make it through the season. Placing the tree near drafty windows also can dry out the tree, so try to find a spot in your home with a consistent temperature.

CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history. Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits. Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky. While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada. DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision. According to the research firm Civic Economics, for every $100 you spend: in a local small business, $68 stays in your community; at a local branch of a chain store, $43 remains; online, virtually no money stays local.

People don’t like to let others in front of them because they feel they should wait their turn patiently. Lately, I have been letting sometimes two people behind me, people with separate carts or with one or two items in their hands go first. It doesn’t hurt to be kind to someone. I have had

Even if people don’t let me ahead of them, I continue to do so, knowing I did the right thing, and it is more commendable to do a kindness and something for someone that did not do the same.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.

GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

Keywords, phrasing, formatting, and having the right skills for the job can ensure a résume is seen by a recruiter, and perhaps even lead to a new career.
