DID YOU KNOW ?

Tw o of the keys to living longer may be spending more time w ith family and remaining socially engaged. According to research and the book, “ The How of Happiness,” by Sonja Lyubomirsky, long-lived cultures attribute their longevity to keeping people close. An analysis of three communities of very long-living people in Lyubomirsky’s book - Sardinians in Italy, Okinaw ans in Japan and Seventh-Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California - revealed that they all had five priorities in common. At the top of that list w ere “ Put family first” and “ Keep soc ially engaged.” Good friendships, deep relationships w ith family members and social engagement are essential to a long, happy life. This New Year’s Eve, more people may w ant to resolve to prioritize friends and family more than they already do. Not only can doing so deepen relationships, but it also can keep people healthier by reduc ing stress and the risk of developing illnesses related to depression and loneliness. Today is a great time to reconnect w ith members of the family and sc hedule a longaw aited visit.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE
REAL ESTATE SECTION
Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

HOW TO MAKE GIFT WRAPPING EASIER Less is usually more. Do not use too much paper when wrapping; otherwise, you will be left with bulky, sloppy folds. Before trimming the gift wrap from the roll, check that it overlaps the ends of the box by just a couple of inches. A sturdy paper will help you achieve crisper folds and prevent tears when wrapping. For the simplest wrapping design, try kraft paper (brown mailing paper), which can be dressed up with ribbons, cutouts or stamps.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2023
To my dear clients, After a long and hard period of soul-searching, I have decided to sell my practice as I plan to retire from practicing veterinary medicine full-time. Know that I do so with mixed emotions. I am very excited to turn over my reign to the Malocos: Dr. Ami Maloco, her husband, Ruel Maloco, and their son, Noell Maloco. They are the new owners and managers of Canisteo Veterinary Hospital as of October 1, 2023. The Malocos currently own and operate Dansville Animal Hospital and Midtown Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Ami Maloco earned her education from Kansas University and Central Luzon State University. She had experience working as a critical care and regular veterinary technician for 8 years before becoming a veterinarian. Her areas of expertise include preventive medicine for small animals, dentistry, routine surgeries, and soft tissue surgeries. Her areas of interest include internal medicine and emergency care. Exceptional veterinary care is incredibly important to Dr. Maloco. She is committed to exemplifying professionalism in caring for her clients’ pets’ needs by providing incredible patient care and customer service. Communication and interaction play a pivotal role in her interactions with her clients. I will be staying on full-time until the end of 2024 to help with the smooth transition. My staff will continue to stay with the practice as they add new team members in the coming months. I will decide to stay in a part-time capacity towards the latter part of next year. It has been an honor and a pleasure to be a part of your lives for all these years. I wish your families, both two and four-legged members, all the best in health and happiness. My relationships with all my clients, patients, and co-workers are what have made this profession so special to me. I appreciate your loyalty throughout the years, and the memories of all that I have experienced over these past four decades will always be with me. Sincerely, Grant Seaman, D.V.M

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION
585-967-7919 HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Add insulation. M any older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater.
Get necessary permits: Permits are designed to ensure the work is being done to code and in a safe manner. However, they are not without additional costs and processing time, and that can cause some homeowners to skip this step. According to the home information site The Spruce, building permits cost anywhere from $400 to about $2,200 for new home construction. Building permits for smaller projects can cost $100 or less, and typically are based on a percentage of the anticipated cost of the project. A permit may be issued the day the application is submitted, while other cities and towns may issue permits up to two or more weeks later. Factor permit fees and processing times into the renovation plan. If it comes to light a homeowner did work without a required permit, he or she may face penalties; may have to tear out work done to have it inspected or redone; some may be unable to sell a home until permits have been obtained and work has been done to code. Homeowners insurance coverage also may be affected if homeowners do not obtain the proper permits.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

Ampullary Cancer Treatment Can Include Chemo Prior to Surgery ---
Joyce Davies 170 Franklin St., Dansville, NY (585) 335-4750
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with ampullary cancer. He has a tumor the size of a marble. We are told this is an aggressive cancer. My concern is that they are giving him chemotherapy before the Whipple surgery. Is this standard practice? -- P.T. ANSWER: The ampulla of Vater is an opening in the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine), where the common bile duct releases bile and pancreatic enzymes to aid digestion. A cancer of the ampulla can originate from the pancreas, bile duct or duodenum, and these can all be aggressive cancers. The standard approach in people with the possibility to be cured is called a pan creaticoduodenectomy, otherwise known as the Whipple procedure. Although this is a complex surgery that used to have a high mortality rate, the risk of death from the procedure in specialized centers is now about 1%. Most people are familiar with getting chemotherapy after surgery to help remove any cancer cells that remain, a technique called “adjuvant therapy.” However, giving chemotherapy before surgery (“neoadjuvant chemotherapy”) has increasingly been used in people with ampullary cancer. The idea is to shrink the tumor to make it easier for the surgeon to remove completely. Chemotherapy may also kill any cancer cells that have already spread. The decision of when to use chemotherapy depends on the individual’s situation, so I can’t tell you which would be better in your husband’s case, as I lack both the details of his tumor and the expertise. I can confirm that giving chemotherapy prior to surgery is being used in regards to ampullary cancer.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Houseguests vs. Pets Holiday Edition
WORDS FOUND IN “SEASON’S GREETINGS”
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My brother is staying with us through the holiday season while he figures out his life. However, he insists on keeping the feeding bowls full for my two dogs, Buster and Charlie. I’ve spoken to him several times already, asking him not to do it. Buster is overweight and on a prescribed diet. What can I do to stop this? -- Darlene in Phoenix, Arizona DEAR DARLENE: It’s really strange, and annoying, that your brother can’t seem to follow your request. I’m not sure what’s going on, so I won’t judge the situation. However, if you want him to stay, then for your dogs’ sake, you’ll have to take extra steps to stop this. Move the dog food to a cabinet or storage bin that you can lock. Take out just the amount of food for that day and portion it out for your dogs’ scheduled feeding times. Then remind your brother that the way you feed your dogs is non-negotiable. DEAR PAWS: I’m 11 years old and my cousins are staying with us for Christmas. They want to walk my dog, Reed, all the time. But that’s my job, and Reed is my dog. How can I get them to stop? -- Carlos in Dallas, Texas DEAR CARLOS: Talk to your parents about your frustration. Are your cousins not sharing the lead during walks? Or are they mistreating your dog? If it’s a sharing situation, the adults should help negotiate a fair plan for walking Reed. If they’re mistreating him, your parents need to know and put a stop to it. Holiday visits can be annoying for you and your pets, but being diplomatic while holding firm to certain rules, like diet and training schedule, is helpful. Best of luck. Here’s a Tip * Commit to spending one or two unscheduled nights per week during holiday break, just hanging out with your kids. You can enjoy the toys they might have gotten for Christmas, read, play games or just relax in each other’s company. They will return to school (and you to work) less stressed. -- E.G. in Massachusetts * P.S.G. from South Carolina writes: Delegate table tasks that are age-appropriate to your children for any holiday gatherings that you host. Place setting, condiment delivery, refilling water glasses at scheduled intervals, etc. Children like to have a job, and they are better behaved when they have a focus and make a contribution. * Plan now for leftovers: Have small plastic containers and zip-top bags in case your guests or family would like to take some home. This is an especially smart thing to do if you are looking to eat healthier. Send Grandma home with a turkey plate and a big slice of chocolate cake! It’s better to share. SHOPPING LOCALLY
It Matt ers
I
t matters where you shop. Where you spend your hard earned money. Your local merchant is working just as hard to earn your money. And when you choose to not support your local merchant and shop outside your community or county, you’ve robbed yourself of the benefits of your money staying where you live. THINK LOCAL, especially at this gifting time of year. Make it a Merry Christmas for all of us because, ‘it matters!’
The feel-good factor Doing for others certainly has an impact on the person on the receiving end, but also benefits the do-gooders. A November 2020 survey by Union Bank found that 72 percent of Americans said supporting small businesses was more important than getting the best deals. That may be due to the feeling of helping out a fellow neighbor.
Create job opportunities Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, along with their employees. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. That’s also true in Canada, where 68.8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she - or a relative - will need a job. Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals.
Keep more money in the community The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. Spend the same $100 at a national retailer and only $14 stays.
Enjoy a more local flavor National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses may also be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains.

From all of us at
You Put “Community” in our name! The Lakeville Community Pantry is so grateful to our community for the support, kindness and encouragement given in our first year since relocating and rebranding. Because of your caring and response to our requests, we are able to help those in our community with food insecurities. We thank all of the businesses, civic organizations and local churches for their support. We continue to be amazed by all the individual donors who quietly fill our donation box, provide gifts and reach out, and our volunteers who serve our guests. The Lakeville Community Pantry is overwhelmed by your generosity. Thank you! My Closest Friend - “Joiny” Yep! My closet friend is not Johnny, Jimmy or Joey. In fact it is not human at all. The name is “Joiny” and I coined it for my iPhone. There is nobody or nothing else that is always so close to me, and let’s me connect or join the world, but my trusty Phone “Joiny”. “Joiny” provides me with information that I didn’t know on a daily basis. I learn so much from this non-human, and it is with me constantly at my age of 82. I ask myself how I survived without “Joiny”? While I did survive, I was never as well informed nor able to connect with so many people in so little time. Thanks, electronic progress.
Litter Bugs Big Time Months ago hundreds of posters for a lost dog were posted throughout [3 local towns] and probably other towns. That pet is either lost or found by now and yet the posters remain. The posters are now unreadable and turning into trash. One polite phone call to the contact was ignored. These poster-makers were asking for help in finding their pet, and yet violating the landscape for thousands of residents doesn’t bother them at all! Please come back and take out the trash! Selfishness is still selfishness. And littering is still against the law. [Local Hospital] Needs New Weekend Policies I drove my wife, age 81 to [local hospital] ER on a Thursday and I was able to park close by in the ER open parking lot. My wife was admitted later that day. On Friday, I drove to the hospital and was glad to see Valet parking close to the main entrance. I am 82 with a bad knee. Saturday I arrived at the same valet place and was told no valet on the weekend, and to park in the large garage building free. I had to walk that day and the next day, Sunday, a long way to the front entrance. I was in pain, with nobody to help as I also carried a heavy bag. I also found out from the front desk that two main restaurants were closed as well as the gift shop. Now I call what [local hospital] does on weekends not good. A grade C-. The Jingle Ladies Coordinated the 5th Annual Avon Holiday Spectacular BY SUZIE WELLS
I
n 2018, Avon’s Ashley Comeau, Jessica Ryan-Soucy, Becky Anderson, and a couple of other women chatted and wanted to do something in the community to bring people together. They considered the small town charm of Hallmark movies, often featuring a cute festival or something for the holidays at which people fall in love in the season’s magic. The Avon natives thought their own town held exactly that small town charm that would be perfect for such Hallmark magic. Thus began the Avon Holiday Spectacular. That first year, organizers started planning in September to host the December event, and worked hard to spread the word and hoped the event would encourage more visitors than just their own families, Ryan-Soucy laughs. In fact, they were happy to welcome about 1,000 residents and visitors to that first year’s event. Five years later (with a mini event in 2020 for COVID), this year’s Dec. 2nd event estimates about 5,000 happy residents and visitors from the surrounding area converged in the quaint, friendly village. Even in the drizzles, Ryan-Soucy says the Holiday Spectacular was a hit. Sponsored by the village and town of Avon, as well as all sorts of businesses around town, this event is coordinated entirely by the group of volunteers that calls themselves the Jingle Ladies, 16 Avon moms, most of whom are lifelong Avon residents, all of whom treasure family time and community. The group casually discusses event planning throughout the year, with the bulk of preparation beginning each August. Ryan-Soucy says the mission of this event is to “have a fun event that’s basically free, so every person who attends can have a great experience, families can bring kids and not worry about the expenses of it.” Even as it’s grown and more visitors come to town, it’s still a free event for families to treasure time together. When asked what inspires her or the Jingle Ladies to continue this tradition, Ryan-Soucy became emotional. She says seeing so many people come from all over the area to meet up in the village, “it’s so fun to see everyone in a non-stressful environment, having fun, enjoying the kickoff for the holiday season.” This year’s event featured a mini light parade, outdoor ice skating, holiday shopping with a variety of local artisans at the Village Hall, a Meet & Greet with Santa at the Library, Family-friendly holiday activities at the Fire Hall and on Genesee Street, and a Santa reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and the annual tree lighting. Jeff Bleier demonstrated his ice sculpting art. Central Presbyterian Church hosted a bell choir and hayrides. The cast of Scrooge performed pieces from the play, and Dance Emporium’s Holiday Dance Troupe shared their holiday ensemble that evening. Family photography captured the delight of the holiday season.
individuals and families actively engaged throughout the event. The Avon Historical Society even shared stories about the town and village throughout the day. The night rounded out with a free family concert at the Avon Park Theater. Ryan-Soucy says her favorite moment this year was when Santa came through town in a mini light parade, getting the kids all excited. There was an impromptu scuffle between Santa and the Grinch, who drove a tractor in the parade, coming together to be friends and share the Christmas spirit. The annual Holiday Spectacular also offers a great opportunity to bring people into local businesses and organizations. RyanSoucy explains that a lot of organizations raise funds and collect donations at the event. This year, the local Lions Club collected toys, and the Avon Rotary Club sold crepes, with proceeds benefitting Avon Community Cares. Churches across the village raised funds through fun community raffles. And a lot of non-perishables were collected for the Avon Food Pantry. Avon High School’s Interact Club helped children craft Letters to Santa. Ryan-Soucy says the Avon community cares about its own yearround, but especially shares the love and support at the holiday time, and it’s incredible to help boost those efforts together. She and the Jingle Ladies say, “Thank you for your support. This was a spur of the moment idea, and there has been an unbelievable outpouring of support in the event. Every year, it’s grown more and more. Everyone comes out in the town. It’s pretty incredible.”
Local Scouts helped kiddos make s’mores and reindeer food. Caroling by the Genesee Valley Children’s Choir, face painting by the Avon Art Club, balloon animals, luminary making, and a slew of furry friends offered such a variety of activities to keep

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
