HOLIDAY SHOPPING SAFETY TIPS

Recognize you might not get everything on your list. Inventory may be limited in regard to sale items during the holiday season. Make a list of the items you hope to buy and where you hope to buy them, ranking each item in terms of importance. Then calmly move from store to store, recognizing that you may not end up with every item on your list. Accepting this ahead of time can make the day seem less hectic and more safe.

HOW TO MAKE GIFT WRAPPING EASIER

Less is usually more. Do not use too much paper when wrapping; otherwise, you will be left with bulky, sloppy folds. Before trimming the gift wrap from the roll, check that it overlaps the ends of the box by just a couple of inches. A sturdy paper will help you achieve crisper folds and prevent tears when wrapping. For the simplest wrapping design, try kraft paper (brown mailing paper), which can be dressed up with ribbons, cutouts or stamps.

SPARTA CENTER CHURCH

8455 Sparta Center Rd. • Dansville • 585-236-0887 December Sermon Series at Sparta Center Church

Ingredients

Classic Pizza Margherita (Family Features)

1 package refrigerated pizza dough

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, divided

1 package Johnsonville Mild Italian Sausage

1/2 medium red onion, minced

1 tablespoon parsley, minced

1 tablespoon garlic, minced

1 tablespoon oregano

8 Roma tomatoes, sliced (divided - save 10 slices for the top)

10 fresh basil leaves (divided)

2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

1 cup fontina cheese, shredded

1/2 cup fresh Parmesan cheese, grated

Preparation

1. Position oven rack on lowest shelf and preheat to 425°F. Lightly oil a pizza pan. Roll out dough as thin as possible. Let rest 10 minutes.

2. In small skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high, add sausage and cook until browned. Remove from skillet, cool slightly and coin slice. In the same pan, sauté onion and parsley to golden, then stir in garlic and oregano for a few seconds. Add tomatoes to pan, crushing them as they are mixed (do not substitute crushed tomatoes). Boil, stirring 5 minutes or until thick.

3. Spread sauce over crust, sprinkle with half the basil, mozzarella, fontina, sausage, remaining slices of tomatoes and finally remaining olive oil. Finish with generous pepper and a little sea salt. Bake for 10 minutes.

4. Using a spatula and an oven mitt, slip pizza off pan directly onto oven rack, bake for two minutes. Slip pizza back onto pan, remove from oven. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and remaining fresh basil. Cut and enjoy. Serves 4 to 6

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Cardiologist Doesn’t Recommend Over-the-Counter Sleep Aids

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old man in reasonably good health. When I had trouble falling asleep, I would take a swig of Zzzquil, which worked perfectly every time. However, since then, my cardiologist told me to stop taking such products, so I turned to 5-mg tablets of melatonin in the evening to help induce drowsiness. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t.

One night, after I had three beers, I also took two gelcaps of Gas-X to alleviate the bloated feeling just before bed. It was about an hour or so after the melatonin, and I quickly dozed off to sleep. Since then, I noticed that if I awaken in the night and take another Gas-X, I shortly doze off again and have remarkable, complex dreams. Is this self-protocol of mine medically unsound in any way?

ANSWER: There’s a lot going on here. First off, I completely agree with your cardiologist that the sleep aid you were taking, like most over-the-counter sleep aids, contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that sedates some people. The problem with this medicine is that the quality of sleep isn’t good for many people. It also increases the risk of falls in older people and the risk of motor vehicle accidents in people who drive. It’s not a good choice for older adults.

Melatonin is safer and has fewer side effect, one of them being vivid dreams. However, 5 mg is a big dose. I usually recommend 0.5-1 mg in my older patients. Gas-X (simethicone) isn’t absorbed into the body and shouldn’t cause vivid dreams. A search found no reports of abnormal dreams with simethicone, so it was almost certainly the melatonin that caused the dreams. Maybe Gas-X allowed you to sleep while the melatonin was still around enough to give you vivid dreams.

In addition, three beers on a regular basis are more than what is considered healthy for anyone, and a man in his 80s will be affected by three beers much more than a younger man of the same size.

DR. ROACH WRITES: Seven years ago, I went to the emergency room and was told I had blood clots in my arms that traveled to my lungs. I started Eliquis. The doctor said I had a problem with factor V, but I don’t have my blood results. Do I need to stay on this blood thinner? I know it has severe side effects.

ANSWER: Factor V is a protein that is critical in making clots, and an abnormality in this protein can make a person bleed (although this is very rare). What’s more common is a condition called factor V Leiden (FVL), which makes the body resistant to the activated protein C, a natural anticoagulant. (Anticoagulants decrease blood-clotting and are sometimes referred to as “blood thinners.”) So, the net effect of FVL is that it makes blood clots a little more likely. Many people have FVL, but most will not develop a blood clot.

However, you apparently developed blood clots in both arms that caused the clots to move to the lungs, which are called pulmonary emboli. Determining the duration of therapy takes clinical judgment. Because you had clots in your arms rather than your legs, had a pulmonary embolus, and have FVL, some experts would treat you for the rest of your lifetime. I wouldn’t say that Eliquis has severe side effects. Because it reduces blood-clotting, there is a chance of bleeding. For most people with a low to average risk of bleeding, the likelihood is on the order of 1% to 2% per year. If the risk of a life-threatening clot is higher than the risk of bleeding, then continued anticoagulation is preferred.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT

What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health.According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat, which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease.

Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly.

The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that clothing is the first line of defense against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet, or UV, rays. The right clothing can absorb and block UV radiation and the SCF recommends wearing such attire as part of an effective sun protection regimen. When purchasing clothing, consumers are urged to determine each article’s ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF. The UPF factor indicates what fraction of the sun’s UVA and UVB radiation can penetrate the fabric and reach the skin. Clothing with a UPF of 50 will only allow 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin. The UPF rating system is relatively new, so consumers in North America may not find UPF ratings listed on the labels of clothing they typically purchase from their favorite retailers. In addition, the sun protective clothing industry in North America is self-regulated, which means some, but not all, manufacturers’ claims regarding the safety of their clothing may be dubious. However, consumers concerned about the safety of the clothing they wear when spending time in the sun can speak with dermatologists about finding clothing manufacturers with strong reputations of producingsunprotectiveclothing that can protect them from the sun’s UV rays.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* Tigers, jaguars and leopards love the smell of Calvin Klein’s “Obsession For Men”! Photographers who used the fragrance to lure the big cats to their cameras in the wild said the cats “would start drooling, their eyes would half-close, almost like they were going into a trance.”

* Halloween is more Irish than St. Patrick’s Day.

* Ever wonder how the dice game Yahtzee got its curious moniker? A wealthy Canadian couple invented the game as a way of entertaining friends on board their yacht. After it proved a hit, the couple consulted a toy maker who loved it, bought the rights, and changed the original name from the generic “Yacht game” to “Yahtzee.”

* Barbie has been outfitted by over 70 well-known designers, including Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF

Telecommunications According to the NDC, telecommunications technology has evolved considerably in recent decades. That evolution has made it easier than ever for deaf individuals to communicate.

The NDC notes that telecommunications technology for deaf individuals is an umbrella term that includes telephone devices, platforms and services that are employed when standard phones are ineffective. The NDC identifies three primary telecommunications services:

1. Video relay service (VRS)

2. Telecommunications relay service (TRS)

3. Video remote interpreting (VRI)

Regulated by the Federal Communications Commission,VRS and TRS are free programs, whereas VRI is a fee-based service. TRS is a text-driven service that, unlike VRI and VRS, does not employ video.

Not just on Small Business Saturday...

Nosy

Here’s a shout out to all those small business owners who are going above and beyond to serve their communities. Especially at this time of year we should take the time to patronize the local shops, cafes, breweries and markets. These establishments are what make small towns unique, friendly and the place we’re proud to call home.

This has been on my mind and I need to say it, and I hope you read this: To the woman who called me a "nosy [expletive]," I heard you ask what your balance was on your SNAP, so I instinctively looked as customers in the past have asked the same and I checked for them. You stormed out before I could even explain why I looked at your receipt. If anyone is the [expletive], it's you.

Tow Company

Love my Penny Saver!

I just finished the current Penny Saver. Love what you do with all the articles, Did You Know, Trivia, Paws Corner, health articles, and more! Keep up the good work. I am already looking forward to the Penny Saver during the coming weeks. Have a Merry Christmas.

On Nov 14th, my car was towed to the tire place on [local road]. I trusted the tow truck driver to tow it there (1 or 2 miles) and at least lock the vehicle before giving the key to the tire associate. To make a long story short, when the car was fixed and I drove it home, the hatchback had been broken into. My camping canvas bag was missing with a kitchen set of knives worth $100-$200 gone. My insurance papers were missing from the glove compartment.

Never assume a towing company will lock your vehicle. The young man driving told me he had done this for 20 years and knew what he was doing. Really? Locking the car isn't included?

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY

Get rid of your old holiday lights. Still using the same Christmas lights you used in 1995? Such lights are likely incandescent bulbs that are considerably less efficient than today’s LED Christmas lights. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that LED lights consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. In addition, the OEERE says that LED holiday lights are easier to install and that as many as 25 strings of lights can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket.

JOE UNDERHILL’S HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Shine Bri htly on Gardner Road in Wh ler

heholiday spirit

shines brightly on Gardner Road in Wheeler, New York, thanks to Joe Underhill’s incredible Christmas light display. For residents and visitors alike, this annual tradition is more than a spectacle—it’s a reflection of the community’s tight-knit, family-oriented ethos, woven with history, dedication, and joy.

Joe Underhill, a lifelong Wheeler resident, balances his professional role as a product line manager in Gorilla Glass at Corning Incorporated with an array of hobbies, including his passion for holiday light displays. “My family is very close, and Christmas has always been a special time of year,” Joe shares, saying, “Spending time with friends and family around Christmas is my favorite part of the season.”

He recalls fond childhood memories of the Goodrich family’s aweinspiring display just a few miles down the road. at tradition planted a seed in him, sparking his eventual dive into light artistry. When the Goodriches moved and ended their Christmas display tradition, Joe decided to pick up where they le off, but with his own twist. Inspired by a video of Christmas lights sequenced to Trans-Siberian Orchestra music, he researched how to make it happen.

In 2017, Joe started small, testing a modest setup: lights around the outline of his windows and doors without music, as his “trial run year.” By 2018, he launched a full-scale light show featuring LED pixels synchronized to music, earning him local acclaim. A er that first year, his goal became to add new props and increase the display/pixel count each year.

Each pixel in his display houses three independently controlled LEDs (red, green, and blue), resulting in a stunning array of nearly 61,000 lights at last count. Programming so ware controls each LED to generate a specific color and effect. “It’s a lot of work, but I love doing it,” Joe says.

“Hearing how much joy it in s to the co unity k ps me oing.”

e process is as intricate as the display itself. Joe taps into a vast online network of holiday light enthusiasts for ideas, spends months designing and sequencing, and always seems to find himself in a anksgiving-week crunch to finish the newest elements. His 30–40-minute show now includes a variety of music, from traditional

carols to comedic parodies, with a playlist that changes throughout the season. Visitors can tune their car radios to 96.7 FM to experience the fully synchronized performance. Despite the staggering effort, Joe insists, “ e display is my gi to the community.”

For Cindy Norton, Wheeler’s town historian, Joe’s display is emblematic of what makes Wheeler unique. “We’re a community of doers,” she notes, highlighting the contributions of local organizations like the Wheeler Community Club, the Methodist Church, and the Historical Society, where Joe himself serves as treasurer. “Joe’s display is just another way we come together and create something special for families.”

e display launches annually on Black Friday and runs through New Year’s Eve, lighting up the dark winter evenings with warmth and wonder. Even Halloween serves as a prelude, with a light show that shares many elements with the Christmas setup—a practical decision, given the scope of Joe’s work (“Halloween gives me an excuse to start hanging the Christmas lights during the warmer weather,” Joe says. For the 2–3-day complete Christmas setup, Joe says he usually recruits some friends and family to help.

Visitors to the show can see the enchanting glow visible from State Route 53, and Joe says, “the show is completely free, but you have to bring your own cocoa and cookies.”

ough he doesn’t know how many new lights will go up this year, he says the goal is always to add more. With the kind patience of neighbors tolerating the increased traffic and the shared joy of families marveling at the lights, the display embodies the spirit of the season.

Joe Underhill’s lights aren’t just decorations; they’re a tradition, a labor of love, and a gi to the town he calls home. For Wheeler, his work reflects the best of what the season and the community stand for: connection, creativity, and celebration.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

Wear solid shoes that provide considerable traction during home improvements. A firm, reinforced toe is helpful as well. Should any items fall, they’ll be less likely to cause injury if your foot is encased in a protective boot or sturdy shoe. Soles that grip surfaces will help safeguard against slips and falls.

SIGNS A ROOF NEEDS REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT

Roof age: The age of the roof is a major factor in determining if it will need to be replaced or if repairs can be made to isolated damage. Individuals who live in neighborhoods where neighbors are now replacing roofs will likely find it is time to consult a roofing company. Homeowners also can check to see if they have any receipts that indicate the roof’s installation date so they have an idea about its age.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS

Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

WOOD STAINING TIPS

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and otherhomedesignelements.

Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, andbirch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting inblotchinganduneventone.

Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieveamoreevenlook.

Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsestgritsandpaperandmove toahighergritforasmoothfinish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers.

Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushesafterward.

Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to productdirections.

Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color andafinishtosavetime.

Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardwareanddamageit.

THE BEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE YOUR PET

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read about a person who did not vaccinate their house cats, and a er one of them got out, lost all of them to feline leukemia. I can relate to this person. I only have one cat, and I thought, for a while, that I could get away without vaccinating her. Fortunately, a friend convinced me otherwise.

It turns out that it doesn’t take much to protect my baby when she depends on me to take care of her. I’ve never gone without just to pay for “Racquel’s” vaccinations, and in turn, she is a healthy cat who brings so much companionship to my life. Please tell your readers not to skip this important annual appointment. -- Donna in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

DEAR DONNA: You told them, and I thank you. Vaccinating indoor pets can seem like a pricey extravagance, but it pales in comparison to the cost of treating the diseases that they can contract if they’re not vaccinated.

To reduce the annual cost, check around for discounted shot clinics. ese are usually held on specific dates and places -- pet supply stores, public buildings or participating veterinary clinics. However, these clinics o en don’t advertise extensively due to costs, so you may need to search a bit. Contact your city or county government to see if any clinics are being held nearby, or stop in to major pet supply retailers like Petco, which o en sponsor shot clinics. If not, their workers o en know about pet health clinics nearby.

ese clinics offer required vaccinations and licenses, and sometimes have microchipping and a basic health exam available at a low fixed price per pet.
