IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them. Page 2

Elevator etiquette Please, when using an elevator, don’t stand directly right in front of the door and then try to rush in; there are people inside who need to get out first. This happens so much. I always stand to the side and then look in to see if anyone’s in there and when it’s clear, I get in. It’s not a pretty sight when you’ve got people trying to get in as people are trying to get out. Please use common sense.

Thank you I was in the Wegmans parking lot on Feb 2nd and this gentleman informed me that I had a flat tire. While I was sitting there trying to figure out what I was going to do, he came back with a machine to blow up my tire right there. I’m 88 years old, so this was a blessing from God. Thank you! Winter is so beautiful Winter is so beautiful around here. I’m so glad to see so many people using the Erie Canal towpath and the county park trails in all seasons (we’re from upstate NY after all; if we shelter inside whenever it’s under 40º, we’d miss so much of winter).

Use your phone To the people who complained about a restaurant being closed despite checking their website for the hours of operation, do not blame the restaurant. I’m sure the restaurant had a phone number. Did you think to call the restaurant? Folks, have you noticed people developing a communication phobia to the point of paralysis? With all the technology today there is less communication going on than there was 100 years ago. This couple probably pays over $100 a month to have their cellphone, yet they don’t use it for what it was originally designed to do.

WASHINGTON INSPIRED PRESIDENTS’ DAY

PAW’S CORNER

Established in 1800, Presidents’ Day once went by a different name. Known as Washington’s Birthday, which is still the legal name of the holiday, this day was meant to celebrate the first President of the United States, George Washington, whose birthday was February 22. Congress declared that day a federal holiday more than 200 years ago, and eventually the holiday grew to become a celebration of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12, as well. The holiday is now a celebration of the lives and accomplishments of every U.S. president.

By Sam Mazzotta

Is Pet Sitting A ProfitableCareer? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m a high school student and I’m thinking about what kind of career I’d like to have after I graduate three years from now. I’m not sure college is for me, and I like being around pets -- my family has two dogs and a cat, and I have a flop-eared rabbit. I’ve heard that pet sitting is a good business to be in. Is this true? Can I do that instead of college? -- Caryn H., Fort Walton Beach, Florida DEAR CARYN: Pet sitting is a huge and growing market, because almost every owner is going to need someone to watch their pet at some point. So, it’s certainly worth considering as a career. You can start your own pet-sitting business or go to work for someone else. This is a job that requires responsibility and self-discipline, because people are entrusting you with their pets. You have to show up at the agreed-upon time, follow the owners’ instructions to the letter, and make sure their pets remain happy and healthy. If dog-walking is part of the job, you’ve got to keep them under control and away from conflicts with other dogs. You’ve got to stay healthy, because a sick day is not an option unless you have someone to cover for you. Start by visiting the websites of two major pet-sitting organizations: Pet Sitters International (petsit.com) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). They offer resources, certifications and more. Talk to your parents and your school guidance counselor about your interest. They’ll support you and help you explore this career option. Hungry, Hungry Hearing Aids

They screech like baby birds calling for their mother Feeding time They have worked hard all day Bringing me the joyous news from the radio: 19 cases in this county 105 cases in that The entire country is trying to "flatten the curve" As the world watches The stock market crashed Food is getting hard to find And we're just ending week one. But My electric bill is paid And the hungry, hungry hearing aids Settle down like swaddled infants when I put them in the charger Enjoy my little ones For tomorrow The dance begins again.

DID YOU KNOW? Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

a concert and had to climb stairs. They ended up walking about 2.5 miles in total. After returning home, my daughter had severe pain in both of her feet and was unable to stand or walk on them. She said it felt like someone was crushing them. The pain did not get better, so she went to the emergency room a few days later. A doctor there performed an X-ray and said that the pain was due to bunions, although they did not even look at her feet. She also saw a foot specialist who told her that the diagnosis was neuropathy of the feet and recommended Neurontin for pain. He asked her if she has diabetes, but she does not. They told my daughter that she will have to live in pain for the rest of her life. The doctor recommended getting some tests done on her nerves at the hospital, but she doesn’t have money to pay for these tests. What can be done to help her? How is it possible that the pain started so suddenly? She is in constant pain and is unable to walk. -- K.B. ANSWER: “Neuropathy” is not a diagnosis; it’s a name for a diverse group of diseases that cause damage to the nerves, specifically signifying the nerves in the brain and spinal cord or those outside of them. The recommendation of getting nerve testing done is correct. This does sound like neuropathy from the little bit of information I have, although neuropathies do not typically begin with exercise the way you described. I have seen several cases where muscles have become terribly inflamed and even break down after a period of unusually strenuous exertion (this usually gets better with time), but I would have expected the doctors to make that diagnosis. There is a compressive neuropathy in the foot (tarsal tunnel syndrome) where the nerve is damaged by pressure from muscles, bones and connective tissue, but this happening to both feet at the same time would be surprising. Metabolic neuropathies, like B12 deficiency, cause symptoms on both sides but do not begin suddenly. I’d be worried about her lower spine. I don’t know what your daughter’s financial situation is, whether she might be eligible for Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, or whether there is a free medical clinic near you. I have had many patients make just enough money that they don’t qualify for Medicaid, but are unable to afford commercial insurance and don’t get it through work *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NOW HERE’S A TIP "You can reuse the envelopes that come in junk mail and solicitations. I use them to keep coupons together for when I go to the store, and magazine clippings that I save for my daughter." -M.W. in Alabama

Please join us for this special occasion as old and new members of West Sparta Historical Society and their guests gather for their yearly meeting, elections, and an interesting presentation by guest speaker, Jane Oakes. Local Historian Jane Oakes will discuss the history of “bloomers,” also called the Turkish dress, the American costume, or simply reform dress. They were developed in the 19th century as a healthful and comfortable alternative to the heavy, constricting dresses worn by American women, and became a symbol of women’s rights in the early 1850s. Doctors at Dansville’s water cure “Our Home On The Hillside” were active in promoting dress reform for women as a matter of health and self-determination. The presentation will be followed by coffee, dessert, and discussion. Our annual West Sparta Historical Society meeting and election of officers will take place shortly after that. This is a FREE event, however space is LIMITED. To reserve a seat, or if you have questions, please contact Lisa at 585-315-2053 (leave a message). Not a member? You are still welcome, and we will have membership forms available if you are interested in joining!

David Riddell: Guiding Venture Compassionate Ministries Towards Community Transformation BY SUZIE WELLS

I

n the heart of Henrietta, NY, David Riddell, Director of Venture Compassionate Ministries (VCM) at Calvary Community Church of the Nazarene, stands as a beacon of hope and compassion for the local community. Riddell sheds light on his inspiring journey, the challenges faced by VCM, and the organization’s unwavering commitment to serving its neighbors. David Riddell’s path to leading Venture Compassionate Ministries is rooted in a deep-seated passion for helping others. With a professional journey spanning 17 years, Riddell has dedicated his efforts to various nonprofit organizations, primarily those with religious affiliations. His educational background in Christian education and recreation management, followed by graduate work in business administration, has equipped him with a diverse skill set essential for leading impactful community organizations. Riddell also serves as Senior Director of Advancement and Communications at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester. The pivotal moment that ignited Riddell’s passion for service occurred during a mission trip to Guatemala at the age of 13. This transformative experience broadened his perspective and fueled his desire to serve individuals and families in need. Over the years, he has actively engaged in compassionate ministry programs and nonprofit work, leading and participating in mission trips to Guatemala. Riddell says his daily inspiration at VCM comes from the unwavering resilience and perseverance of the families they serve. The challenges these individuals face are profound, especially since the pandemic intensified difficulties for many. Equally inspiring, he says, are the dedicated volunteers within VCM who embody the spirit of community service. More than 80 individuals lend their time David Riddell and efforts to VCM’s outreach programs, showing the power of love and community support. Riddell says, “Their commitment to serving others in a nonjudgmental and caring capacity is a testament to the power of love and community support. I am inspired to continue fostering a community where neighbors come together, unconditionally supporting one another at their points of greatest need.” As Director of Venture Compassionate Ministries, Riddell finds great joy in witnessing the positive impact on the faces of the families they serve. Especially poignant was their Christmas food distribution event, where despite challenging weather conditions, volunteers came together to bring holiday cheer to the community. The smiles and expressions of gratitude from the families receiving personalized food boxes were particularly heartwarming, Riddell says, as “connecting with the families and sharing in their joy during a challenging time encapsulates the essence of what we do and reinforces the impact of our efforts.”

volunteer, giving back to the community that supported them during their greatest need. Riddell emphasizes that his core goal is to ensure that every person treated by VCM is recognized for their VCM Food Pantry Stockers worth, beyond being a statistic or a client, “irrespective of their past actions or the challenges they may be facing.” Riddell’s goal is to create opportunities to build genuine connections with families, guiding them towards holistic wellbeing, both physically and spiritually. Venture Compassionate Ministries operates on the principle of “loving our neighbors,” inspired by the biblical commandment to love one’s neighbor as oneself. The organization is committed to walking alongside community members through every phase of life, from newborns to working families to shut-ins, offering a range of outreach programs and services. The needs present today among the families served by VCM are challenging and diverse, from food insecurity, job instability, housing and domestic safety concerns, medical expenses, and a pervasive sense of isolation. The organization navigates these challenges by offering a comprehensive strategy that provides hope, creates opportunities, and builds meaningful partnerships. David Riddell’s leadership at Venture Compassionate Ministries reflects a commitment to fostering a supportive community where love, compassion, and genuine connections prevail. RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

Full-Time Positions Cohocton, NY

Full and Part-time positions. Must have experience in light duty towing and recovery, light service work. No CDL required. Must have a tow endorsement and clean driver’s license. For more information apply at: M&R Automotive Service Geneseo, NY or send resume to: mras1automotive@gmail.com

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.
