How to Take Precautions When a Family Member Has Mono

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter was exposed to infectious mononucleosis (“mono”) at college, and she is coming to spend a week at home. What precautions do we need to take to make sure that the rest of the family remains safe? How long does the virus stay active on surfaces? Also, can she get her flu and COVID shots? -- D.G. ANSWER: Mono is classically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but very similar symptoms can be caused by other agents, viruses and even a parasite as well. The virus is transmitted through saliva. The latency period (the time from exposure until the time of symptoms) is longer than you might expect; four to six weeks is typical. Not everybody develops symptoms. Younger children seldom develop symptoms at all when infected, yet they still receive immunity. Unfortunately, they may shed infectious virus particles for months, years or even decades. It is likely that the adults in your family are immune, since 90% of adults have had an EBV infection before. EBV is not a particularly infectious disease, so transmission to family members is uncommon. Still, you should avoid sharing anything that saliva touches, like food, cups or toothbrushes. You don’t need to take special precautions with surfaces. She can get the flu and COVID vaccines as long as she feels well and doesn’t have a fever.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to promote their long-term health. The CDC recommends that men and women age 65 or older who are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions need at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, each week. In addition, such people should perform strengthtraining activities that work all major muscle groups at least two days per week. While many fit older men and women with no preexisting health conditions are capable of these activities, those able to push themselves a little further can opt for 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, such as jogging or running, combined with the same strength-training regimen. A combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity coupled with strength training may also provide adequate physical activity for aging men and women. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women should consult with their physicians to discuss any limitations they may have and how to manage those risks while still being active.

From Hydropathy to Granula The Legacy of James Caleb Jackson in Dansville BY SUZIE WELLS

B

orn March 28, 1811 in Manlius, NY to James Jackson, a physician and surgeon who served in the War of 1812, and Mary Ann Elderkin Jackson, James Caleb Jackson was “torn between his father’s insistence that he pursue a medical career and that of his mother – that he become a missionary.” Jackson rejected both options and resolved to farm for a living instead (freethought-trail.org). Jackson became involved in the abolitionist movement in Western NY, and he lectured against slavery around the region. By 1847, Jackson’s health was failing, and medicine at the time tended to be “scientifically dubious,” according to Free Thought Trail. Jackson found relief in hydrotherapy, considered a “quack” medicine at the time. Since he found relief through this therapy, regardless of its credibility, Jackson pursued it and began a new career as a hydropathic practitioner. He led a hydropathic facility in Skaneateles, Glen Haven Water Cure, starting in 1847, and earned his medical degree from Central Medical College in Syracuse in 1850. At the time, “Water Cures” focused on the therapeutic power of natural mineral springs sprouting around the eastern and middle United States, including the All Healing Spring that burst forth from the side of the eastern mountain of Dansville in 1776, according to History of Dansville, 1789-1902, by AO Bunnell and FI Quick. The “exceeding purity and freedom from organic mineral matter” was found far more favorable than modern medicinal remedies, so people at the time flocked to these Water Cures, often giving patients refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life. According to the Glen Haven Water James C. Jackson Cure’s archived advertisement of the time, the facility highlighted “all the advantages of a quiet and pleasant country home, free from the excitement of city or town life, combined with all the beauties of lake, mountain range, and woodland scenery – a quiet – absolutely necessary [for] all persons who are afflicted with diseases of a nervous tendency and – all persons who are sick, whatever the ailment.” With opportunities for rowing, fishing, swimming in the summer, skating and sleighing in the winter, this facility used no medicines of any kind, believing drugs are “not only unnecessary, but absolutely injurious” and “often the product of mere conjecture.” According to History of Dansville, Jackson emphasized “the cultivation of courage, hope, cheerfulness, in strengthening the will and banishing doubt and despondency, as well as upon prudence in eating, drinking, and dressing, and in the observance of all physiological laws.”

turning Our Home on the Hillside – into one of the most successful and famous medical institutions in the country.” He served as chief physician for almost 20 years, administering his medical wisdom Jackson Sanitorium in Dansville (“Laws of Life”) orally and in various publications across the scholarly arena. While he maintained his hydropathy practice, Jackson developed an interest in “pure foods” and their connection to people’s health. In 1863, James Caleb Jackson created the first dry breakfast cereal he called Granula, a graham cracker-derived food. He may have been experimenting with the material at Glen Haven Water Cure, but perfected the invention when he came to Dansville and found the “unequalled white winter wheat of the Genesee Valley” (DAHM). Although this cereal was not “ready to eat” as we think of cereal today, it only needed to be soaked in milk for about twenty minutes or overnight and was considered quite a convenient alternative to breakfast foods at the time, with no active cooking needed in the morning. This Granula was considered “the first cold breakfast cereal and the beginning of a national industry – the precursor to the corn flakes, shredded wheat, the somewhat similar Grape Nuts, and the myriad other varieties of cereal that we eat today” (DAHM). Granula was also an economical option at the time at about 20 cents/pound, and production of this product could barely keep up with demand. At its peak popularity in the 1880s, as much as 60,000 pounds of Granula were produced annually (DAHM). In 1878, John Harvey Kellogg, the operator of another sanitorium in Michigan, visited Our Home on the Hillside and a few years later developed a dry cereal he also called Granula. Jackson successfully sued Kellogg to change the name, and Kellogg’s product was a predecessor of today’s Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. Jackson passed at age 85 in 1895 and is buried in Dansville’s Green Mount Cemetery. Some abandoned buildings of Our Home on the Hillside remain on site since its closure in 1971.

In 1858, he took the helm of Dansville’s Water Cure Facility, renaming it Our Home on the Hillside, and raising the facility to national acclaim, treating thousands of patients annually, including nursing pioneer and Red Cross founder Clara Barton. According to the Dansville Area Historical Museum (DAHM), Jackson “wasted no time

Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

SPECIAL 50lbs or more of Ground Beef $2.99 lb!

Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Are dogs really happy in freezng weather?

GOLF COAST BEACHES

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: While walking along the local riverway this frosty weekend, I noticed at least three people whose dogs were under-equipped for the cold. One dog wore an insulated vest but no booties; the other two dogs wore no cold protection at all. Why do so many owners ignore their dogs’ comfort and safety this way? -- Harold in New Hampshire DEAR HAROLD: Unfortunately, not every dog owner knows that it’s up to them to protect their pets from cold-weather hazards. Most dogs won’t ask for a sweater vest, and I’ve yet to meet one that didn’t hate booties. I know quite a few dogs that just won’t tolerate booties. Many owners do know their dogs’ limits in the cold, however. They check the temperature before going outside and survey the sidewalk or trail they’re on for hazards like ice chunks, salt or glazing. They limit the time spent outdoors so their dog’s core temperature doesn’t drop. They monitor their dogs to make sure they’re not shivering or in pain, and that their paws aren’t getting frostbitten. And they carefully wipe and check their dogs’ paws as soon as they get back indoors. How do you, an observer, make sure that an owner is following these guidelines? Confronting owners is not advisable. You may be able to strike up a casual conversation on the path, and ask how their dog tolerates the cold weather. But don’t preach at them. In my experience, owners who take the time to walk their dogs on a leash in freezing weather do care about their health and keep an eye on them in the cold.

Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs. Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

Serves 6 Expeller-pressed canola oil spray 1 8-ounce package crimini (baby bella) mushrooms (about 21/2 cups) 1 small yellow onion, cut into eighths 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon extra-virgin oil 1 cup dry rolled oats 2 large eggs 1 pound lean ground turkey (or beef or bison) 13/4 cups pasta sauce, divided 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon Italian herb seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Preheat oven to 375 F. Coat a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or 6 mini loaf pans with spray. Pulse mushrooms in a food processor until finely chopped and add them to a large bowl. Repeat with onion and garlic. Place a large frying pan over medium heat and add oil. When oil is shimmering, add vegetables and sauté for 7 minutes or until water releases and evaporates completely, lowering the heat as necessary. Set aside. Process the oats until they are of a fine consistency. Whisk the eggs in the bowl used for the vegetables. Add processed oats, turkey, 3/4 cup of pasta sauce, cooked vegetables, vinegar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and stir together with a fork until blended. Scoop the mixture into 6 mounds on the pan or into each mini-loaf pan, about 3/4 cup each. Shape each mound into a 4 x 2-inch loaf. Spread remaining 1 cup of pasta sauce on top of the loaves, distributing evenly. Bake on middle rack for 25 minutes, turning pan midway through cooking, until loaves are firm or a thermometer inserted in the middle reads at least 165 F. Allow loaves to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Recipe Notes: You can finely chop vegetables with a knife rather than using a food processor if you prefer. Whole oats can be added to the meat mixture for a more rustic texture. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

FACTS ABOUT FEBRUARY Despite being the shortest month of the calendar year, February has an interesting history. Early calendars marked the start of the new year in March, but when the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, rose to the throne in 713 BC, he synchronized the calendar to the lunar year. That required the addition of January and February.

Incessant Dog Barking Our neighbor’s three dogs bark incessantly every time they are outside. The dogs are outside many times during the day, sometimes before 6:30am and even as late as 9:30pm or 10:00pm. We have complained to the neighbors more than once, but they claim they cannot hear the dogs barking. They say they have tried to curb the barking, but don’t want to curb the barking completely because then the dogs would not warn them if there was danger. Other neighbors have also complained and some have mentioned that they may move. We work from home much of the time and it is really hard to concentrate when the dogs are barking incessantly. It is impossible to have a quiet afternoon on our deck or walk our dog in the back yard. We have considered putting up a fence, but that would be quite expensive and likely would not stop the barking. Short of filing a formal complaint with law enforcement, what are we to do? Parking lot repairs Someone needs to do something but who is left to go to when management won’t fix things? A relative who has lived in a elderly apartment complex for years now with huge potholes, one way in and out, and 3/4 of it is horrendous. The sidewalks have been roped off for over a year, leaving occupants with wheelchairs or mobility carts in a dangerous position, unable to navigate it. Nothing has been fixed, other than stones tossed into the holes, which helped for just a few months. I encouraged them to call the housing authority or withhold rent until repairs are made; it is NOT safe. I can only imagine the damage being done to their vehicles. Anyone have other advice? Our seniors deserve better!

Awesome Coworkers I just want to publicly acknowledge what a blessing it is to have colleagues with whom we like to spend our days. Goodness knows, we spend a lot of time at work, so thank goodness for people who help us smile and see the good in life. Loving our new sidewalks Thank you to all the Avon Village employees who worked hard to install the new sidewalks that extend to the end of North Avenue. Each and every day I see folks utilizing them for walking their pets, strolling their children, or getting in a good walk or run. Just a small thing that has improved the quality of living in this great small town.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
