The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

Jerome “Jerry” David Dougherty February 20, 2023

Jerome “Jerry” David Dougherty, born January 18, 1946, the middle child among the brood of 11 born to Harold and Phyllis Dougherty, passed peacefully at his cherished home on the lake, February 20, 2023. Jerry was a proud and faithful husband, predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Kimberly Dougherty, just 19 days earlier, and father to Jennifer (Tim), John (Mark) and Colleen (Bryan) to which he gave more life, love and inspiration than he could ever imagine. But being Papa to Ruairi, Gideon and Killian was undeniably his most treasured role in this life. Never did his Irish eyes smile more than when telling a story about his beautiful, smart granddaughter or his witty, fun and mischievous little buddies. And while at a distance, he never hesitated a moment to ask about his inherited grandsons Fisher and West.

Jerry is survived by his sisters, Cheryl Bryar (Bill), Pam Arrigenna (Peter), Kay McAfee (Ron); brothers, Kevin, Peter (Barb); brother-in-law, Steve Harrison (Kathy) and dozens of loving and loved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Marcia Quinlan (Kevin), Karen Arrigenna (Jim), MaryJane Stoltman (Paul); sister-in-law, Susan Dougherty and brothers, Jim (Eileen) and John.

Jerry’s love for life, his family, his friends, his faith, his fellow Rotarians and anyone walking down the street willing to strike up a conversation was a contagious gi that was irresistible. ere was never a time that a party of 5 to 500 wasn’t called for, as long as he could convince Kim to get out the invitations and pull together the right food. He just needed time to make sure he had enough Baileys and Jameson on hand and to fastidiously manicure his lawn.

Cohocton: Leroy E Avery, age 73, passed away on February 14, 2023 at Maple City Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hornell. Leroy was born February 8, 1950 in Corning, the son of Norm & Vera Bates Avery. Leroy grew up in Wallace, NY, and later Cohocton. Leroy had a variety of jobs in the area. He worked at Woodcroftery in Wayland for 12 years, Hammondsport Wine Co in Hammondsport for 3 years,Kanaval Logging for 3 years,Gunlocke Co.in Wayland for 6 years and his most recent employment was Widmer’s Wine Co. in Naples for 15 years until he retired in 2012. Leroy really enjoyed doing yard work & related jobs in Cohocton. Many people depended on him for the excellent care he gave their yards & bushes. He was a hard worker & enjoyed weightlifting & physical exercise.

Leroy was predeceased by a brother, John; his father, Norm Avery and grandparents, Maynard & Pearl Avery. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jackie; sons, Anthony from Washington D.C. and Mark from Bath. He is also survived by 3 brothers, Norm (Betty), Keith (Stephanie), and Spencer; 4 sisters, Roxanne (Paul) Van Caeseele, Debbie (Matt) Foster, Val (Rick) Kelleher, and Penny (Victor) Schumacher; and several nieces and nephews.

But, if you were lucky enough to be brought into the ‘family,’ whether by blood, sharing a Baileys, a Notre Dame bus trip or simply showing up for his favorite 3rd of July celebrations on the lake, you knew and felt his love of life, his goodwill and loyal friendship. Like Kim, he was also the beloved “American parent” to so many foreign exchange students and used that opportunity to learn about and travel the world. He treasured his years of both morning co ee at the Village restaurant and a ernoon co ee at Pizzaland. More recently the stories stemmed from “the lunch bunch” and an a ernoon co ee at Ernie and Joanne’s.

Jerry’s was a life well-lived and leaves many stories to be told of Adirondack summer vacations, shing and skiing trips with his buddies, holiday parties and beautiful sunsets on the Florida beach. While he leaves countless friends and family to remember him, Jerry le this world to celebrate with the countless many treasured family and friends with whom we know he is already having a party. You are invited to celebrate with family and friends, as he did for so many and as only he would have it. Wayland: Timothy Dennard, “Tim” passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at his home in Wayland. Tim was born February 11, 1953 in Baconton, GA, the son of Willie Sr. and Rose (Angry) Dennard. Tim grew up Georgia and remained there until 1989 when he moved to the Perkinsville and Wayland areas where he remained.

Tim and Mary Ann Jones were married February 12, 1982 in Georgia and celebrated 41 years together. Tim worked a variety of jobs throughout his life but Agriculture was his forte. While in Georgia he worked on a Pecan Farm and when in NY he worked for many local farmers. Tim was also a custodian at Wayland Cohocton Central School, retiring from there in 2015. Tim was a handyman and would help many in the Wayland Community. He enjoyed shing and he loved music, especially Barry White and Tyrone Davis.

Tim was predeceased by his parents, Willie Sr. and Rose Dennard; his sister, Judy Mae; his son-in-law, Ryan Krupp; his sister-in-law, Rose Dennard; brothers-in-law, Joseph Jones and Willie Jones; and sister-in-law, Lorene Ingram. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Dennard of Wayland; his daughters, Charlene Dennard of GA, Angelia Dennard Ferrell of GA, Monique (Willis) LaPlant of Atlanta, NY, Nicole Dennard of Wayland and Sophia Krupp of N. Cohocton; his grandchildren, Sarah, Timothy, George, Shasmine, Briana, Brittany, Dominic, Darnell, Amaya, Giovanni and Gino; 3 great-grandchildren; his brother,Willie Dennard Jr.of GA; several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews; and his best friend and cat,“Buddy!”

Wayland: Donna M. Short, 79 years of age, passed away Monday evening, February 20, 2023 at Noyes Memorial Hospital. Donna was born October 30, 1943 in Dansville, the daughter of Aloysius and Lucille (Yochem) Morsch. She grew up in the Perkinsville and Dansville areas and resided in Wayland most all of her life. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart School in Perkinsville and a Class of 1961 graduate at Wayland Central School. Donna and Richard A. Short were married March 14, 1964 and celebrated over 28 years together prior to Richard passing away in 1992. Her working career spanned many di erent areas and local companies including, Westinghouse, G.C. Murphy, Craig Developmental, Papas Brothers Dry Cleaners, Blum Shoe Factory, the Toy Factory in Wayland, Kelly Brothers Nursery, Dansville Press, e Gunlocke Company, Kraft Foods and nally back at the Gunlocke Company, retiring in 2005.

Donna’s hobbies were many! She enjoyed crocheting, puzzles, computer games, and in her younger years, riding bicycles and roller skating. She was a member of the Home Bureau Club that made many di erent types of decorations as well. Donna was very proud to have met Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez!

Donna was predeceased by her parents, Aloysius and Lucille Morsch; her husband, Richard A. Short; her son, Richard C. “Rick” Short; her grandsons, Johnathon Short and James Adams; and her greatgranddaughter, Aurora Shanks. DID YOU KNOW? Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

High Doses of Vitamins

Lead to Vitamin Toxicity

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with vitamin D toxicity, according to the blood work from a month ago -- my result was 122 ng/mL. I was taking high doses of vitamin D3 in pill form (15,000 IU a day for three years) bought from a drugstore. I have stopped taking it, but I need to know how long it will take to have a normal amount in my body. (Weeks, months?) Can you shed any light on this question? I would like to take it again when my level comes down, but in a lower amount. Also, by any chance, would the high amount of D3 in my system have any correlation to a diagnosis of stenosis of the aortic valve? -- C.I.

ANSWER: Vitamin D toxicity is not common. I have seen one case in my career requiring hospitalization, due to a very high elevation of the blood calcium level. Vitamin D increases absorption of calcium from food through the intestines.

In addition, calcium can come out of bones in people with very high levels of vitamin D. With high vitamin D levels, calcium levels can also become dangerously high. Common symptoms of very high calcium levels include constipation, nausea and vomiting, muscle weakness, kidney stones, and neurological symptoms, including poor concentration and fatigue. These symptoms tend to happen at levels higher than yours, above 150 ng/mL. Years of high calcium levels can absolutely cause existing heart valve disease to worsen quickly.

In cases of acute intoxication from vitamin D, available treatments include steroids and pamidronate (an injectable medicine similar to alendronate and other drugs used to treat osteoporosis), which can quickly bring the calcium levels back down to normal.

Without this kind of intervention, a vitamin D level will still come down on its own, only more gradually. Vitamin D3 is removed slowly from the body, because it can go into fat tissue. It takes about two months for half the excess to be removed from the body, but because the active forms are removed more quickly, toxicity from excess vitamin D3 usually only lasts for weeks, not months. Still, you are likely not to need any vitamin D for many months, and if you do take it again, do not exceed the safe dose of 5,000 IU a day. I recommend you also get your blood levels tested. Recent studies have questioned the benefit of supplemental vitamin D for most people, although some people, such as those with osteoporosis and low vitamin D levels, probably still benefit.

I’m very glad you wrote. Many people still don’t know that excess of some vitamins can occasionally be dangerous. Vitamin A is the other vitamin where high levels can be very dangerous.

(NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions.

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have.

“AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack.

One reader’s take on the garbage plate discussion

I had to try that fish stick substitution at my local plate joint. Not only did they do it and do it well, but my plate guy offered me tuna salad instead of mac salad! I was hesitant at first because mac salad is my favorite part, but the tuna and capers with extra mayo were a perfect complement to the plate. It added a fresh bite, a nice foil to the richer meat sauce and raw onion. Dig in with a celery stick instead of a spoon for added deliciousness and health!

Calling the Cops!

My sincere and heartfelt thanks to the fellow sufferers at the Mobil Car Wash in Lakeville on February 8, 2023 from 3:15-3:30 who witnessed a confrontation between Generation Z and a 60s person. During a dirty car day I had a 20 minute wait in line. Once it was my turn a large black truck came at me from the EXIT and tried to play chicken. We were now inches apart, but I kept driving forward to pay. Then the dude exited his truck while screaming that I had cheated (cheated a cheater?), and if I hit him he would sue me. It got even brighter when, upon exiting the tunnel, I saw a Livingston County Sheriff parked right by the door. Somebody had called the cops! Other people saw what was going on, and they didn’t like it. My faith in humanity and common purpose soared. I know it’s only a car wash, but we are all on this earth together and equal. Selfish jerks who cut the line anyplace are not really winning anything but our collective contempt—and sometimes vigilance.

Tailgaters

I’m fed up with tailgaters. No matter how fast or slow or time of day there’s always an idiot who tailgates. With deer and other animals out, it’s plain stupid to drive close. Even in daylight some won’t pass or back off and give space. Maybe your eyesight is poor and you need to follow close, sort of like a guide dog. Maybe you’re in a hurry to get somewhere and safety doesn’t matter. Consider the car in front of you who’s worried if they do have to stop or turn you’ll rear end them. Front and rear dash cameras can be used in court. Remember that next time you tailgate.

"Mind My Own Business?" Yeah, you should

To the person who wrote in condemning 'obese' people for costing you more in health insurance, shame on you. There is NO proof that being in a larger body causes poorer health. There IS a correlation between those two things and that is likely due to poor medical care and trauma caused by incessant weight stigma (by people like you). 95% of people who lose weight on diets gain it all back within 2-5 years. Intentional weight loss is not sustainable. So, keep your non-evidence based and oppressive opinions to yourself.

Sore Eye in Your Town

I traveled through town on a nice Sunday in February, looking at the old buildings on Main Street. I admired the old historical building on Main Street and looked across the driveway when something caught my eye: a pickup loaded with trash, along with trash and debris on the side of the house and back. What a disappointment. I proceeded to turn south. While admiring another building, what caught my eye were saws, trailers, wood; you name it, it was there. Your town is very old. Why don't main drag streets keep clean? Where's the code office? Do they have one? It has been a long time since we came through this town. We really wanted to see the old buildings, but this was a sore eye maker.

BEGIN AGAIN RESCUES AND REHABILITATES LOCAL HORSES

Unfortunately for Timmy, more tragedy would strike. e family’s patriarch passed away and the family was forced to sell the house and move, leaving Timmy behind. e family found Timmy had been sold to an unknown buyer and the family had no leads to Timmy’s whereabouts.

A er four years of searching, a family friend was searching Begin Again’s website when she noticed the picture of a horse that looked like Timmy. Even though the horse had a di erent color, she knew it was Timmy and she told the family as much. e family returned to Begin Again and signed the paperwork to bring Timmy to their new home, where he has been ever since.

As the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. However, at the Begin Again Horse Rescue in Lima, that doesn’t have to be the case. e horse rescue, as their name suggests, provides abandoned or struggling horses a chance at a better life through rehabilitation and a chance to have a ful lling life for many years to come.

Located in Lima on Route 15A near the intersection with Woodru Road, the farm consists of horses found to be neglected or abused. rough the help of volunteers, these horses are adopted and rehabbed, and then sent to other places where they can receive proper care from a loving family.

e Begin Again Horse Rescue is only a temporary home for horses, so that means horses are constantly coming and going from the farm. e Horse Rescue usually accepts horses from private owners, county horse facilities, or from livestock auctions where the horse will most likely be sold to slaughter.

Most horses adopted by Begin Again Horse Rescue come from within a two-hour radius of the farm, which allows the farm to adopt horses to local farms and families. Many horses have gone on to be successful outside the rescue.

Last year, one horse adopted from BAHR, Holy Smoke, competed in Harrisburg, PA in the Horse World Expo in the Rescued to Stardom Training challenge. e BAHR sends a horse to this expo every year.

Other horses’ success outside of the horse rescue include Timmy, adopted by Begin Again in 2016 a er its previous owner could not manage the horse’s health. Timmy was 100 pounds underweight and had skin and eye infections. He started his rehab assignment with BAHR and in 2017, he was sent to a family looking for a 4-H mount.

However, this went poorly, and the family had to send Timmy back to Begin Again. Many at the rescue thought Timmy would spend the rest of his life at Begin Again, but that would prove not to be the case.

In 2018, another local family was looking for a horse to adopt and Timmy seemed a good t for them. e family trained Timmy for show, and he participated in AQHA shows and at the New York State Fair. However, Timmy’s demeanor prevented him from showing for long and the family decided it would be fruitless to force Timmy to do something he didn’t want to do.

Another project Begin Again Horse Rescue participates in is Project Microchip, which started in 2021. Placing a microchip on horses tracks them a er they leave the horse rescue to identify them if they ever get lost. e microchips also track horses’ diseases and to prevent their spread. e chip is inserted into the le side of the horses’ neck, with which insertion BAHR says the horses feel no pain.

BAHR has been recognized nationally for their work in horse rehabilitation. ey received Guardian status from the Equus Foundation, received grants from the ASPCA and the Doris Day Foundation, and was named the 2020 Horse Rescue of the Year by the Equis Saves Foundation.

e Begin Again Horse Rescue is completely run by volunteers, except for daily caretakers, and survives solely on donations from the general population.

To volunteer, you must sign a liability agreement on the BAHR website and attend a Saturday morning two-hour orientation. Volunteers under the age of 14 must have parental supervision, and all volunteers are limited to one shi a week, either in the morning or a ernoon.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS

(NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road.

1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents.

2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes.

3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror.

4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags.

5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability.

Is It Taxable?

A er preparing my own taxes annually for over 40 years, I’m about to have someone else do them for me for the rst time. is is not without concerns, of course, but the people who volunteer to prepare taxes at the senior center are trained. ey’re part of the AARP income tax assistance program, which means they’re IRS-certi ed and therefore will know about any recent changes to tax law ... which will be handy at this point.

As of this writing, the IRS is telling people to hold o sending in their tax returns for 2022. e reason: So many states handed out so many types of money during the pandemic that the IRS isn’t sure yet what is and isn’t taxable. For example, checks designated as “rebates” might or might not be taxable. A Covid disaster emergency relief check is not. However, in some cases, the issue is complicated by whether you do or do not itemize. People in at least 22 states are caught in this dilemma.

If you haven’t done your taxes yet and want help, or if you want to make a note for next year, do an online search for “AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Locator.” Once on the site, scroll down and enter your ZIP code or town in the search eld to nd the locations near you.

Be sure to ask about the forms you’ll need to pick up and ll out before your appointment, and whether you’ll be going inside or waiting in the parking lot.

e other good news is that this AARP service is free. For me it means I don’t need to spend $50 once again to buy the computer so ware and do it myself and hope I haven’t made an error somewhere ... perhaps with guessing wrong about whether that state check I received is or isn’t taxable.

CREATIVE WAYS FOR SMALL TOWN RESIDENTS TO GIVE BACK

Giving back to one’s community is a great way for men and women to make use of their talents and foster strong towns and cities. Volunteering opportunities abound in big cities, but small town residents may not have as many options as they look for ways to give back.

Small town residents looking to give back may need to create their own opportunities if the options available to them do not suit their fancies. Contact local schools. Teachers, afterschool caregivers and coaches can always use some helping hands. Contact local schools to determine if there is any way to help out. Prospective volunteers might be able to read to young children, serve as assistant coaches for youngsters’ sports teams or even help tend to playing fields. Small town school budgets tend to be stretched thin, so chances are local educators will welcome citizens looking to pitch in with open arms.

Start a program through your place of employment. Another way for small town residents to give back to their communities is to begin a mentoring or internship program through their places of employment. Once their employers give the go-ahead, men and women can begin working with local high schools and/or colleges to develop programs that encourage youngsters to gain professional experience that can benefit them as they apply to college or graduate school or prepare to begin their own careers. Start a volunteering group. Small town residents without much access to volunteering programs can organize groups through their offices or neighborhoods. Organize groups willing to pitch in with charities such as Habitat for Humanity®. Group leaders can arrange transportation to work sites for members of the group while working as liaisons between their community groups and the organizations they choose to work with.

Work with area hospitals. Similar to school districts, many hospitals would struggle to meet their missions of providing compassionate care if not for the contributions of volunteers. Contact area hospitals to learn about volunteering. Some may need volunteers to read to sick children, while others may need help keeping elderly patients company.

(NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding.

So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company.

The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue.

In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills.

“My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.”

Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century.

Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success.

1 jar (16 ounces) Aunt Nellie’s Holland-Style Onions nonstick cooking spray

2 tablespoons chopped oil-packed, sun-dried tomatoes, divided

1 large clove garlic, minced

4 tablespoons sliced fresh basil, divided coarse ground black pepper, to taste

1 tablespoon oil from sun-dried tomatoes or olive oil, divided

1 log (8 ounces) goat cheese

1/2 teaspoon Mediterranean herb seasoning (optional) crackers (optional)

flatbread (optional) pita chips (optional)

Heat oven to 350 F.

Drain onions well; pat dry.

Spray shallow, oven-proof dish (34-cup size) with nonstick cooking spray. Place onions in dish. Press with spatula to flatten and crush. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon tomatoes, garlic, 2 tablespoons basil and black pepper, to taste. Drizzle with 1/2 tablespoon oil. Cut goat cheese into 6-8 rounds. Arrange over onion mixture. Sprinkle with remaining tomatoes; drizzle with remaining oil. Sprinkle with herb seasoning, if desired. Bake uncovered 20-30 minutes, or until cheese is soft and mixture is bubbly. Sprinkle with remaining basil. Serve warm with crackers, flatbread or pita chips, if desired.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There

are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up.

There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2

What Dads are Already Doing

Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved:

• 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3

• 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4

• 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5

• Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6

• Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7

Eventhoughfathersarelargelymoreinvolvedthaninpreviousgenerations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8

To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.

“All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated.

The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. DEAR SARAH: Nipping at your hand while being petted is a very common cat behavior (or misbehavior, depending on which end of the bite you’re on). It stems from instinctive behaviors that a cat learns from the time they’re born through adulthood.

DID YOU KNOW? The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian.The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines.Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

Ideally, the best time to curb biting behavior is when they’re kittens, but not everyone has that luxury -- people who’ve adopted adult cats, for example, or owners who thought a kitten nipping their knuckles was cute, until that kitten turned into a full-grown, biting cat. As you’ve probably noticed, yelling, “No” at a cat doesn’t always get the desired e ect. Instead, gently discourage this behavior. Pet your cat as usual, but as soon as he begins to bite, withdraw your hand and turn your body partly or totally away from him. You want to communicate that biting means he won’t get your attention any longer.

Another option, before settling in front of the television with Huey snuggled up next to you, is to smear a tiny bit of peanut butter or another favorite treat across your knuckles. Let him lick your knuckles periodically while you pet him. e instant he tries to bite, take your hand away. Essentially, you want Huey to not see your hand as a toy or an attention-getter. It will take a few tries, but most cats pick up on your intentions a er a while, so be patient and consistent with this training.
