Turmeric Supplements Safe to Try for Arthritis
Elderly People in your area need your help.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read about turmeric for osteoarthritis. I’m on a limited income. Please tell me more about it, like how much it costs and where I can get it. -- W.C. ANSWER: Turmeric, a spice that has been used for millennia, is the source of curcumin, which has been shown to improve symptoms of osteoarthritis, at least in short-term studies. It is generally thought to be safe, as most people have no side effects or only occasional stomach upset, nausea or diarrhea. A theoretical concern is bleeding, in combination with anticoagulants, but this appears to be rare. I have had many patients try curcumin, and it has improved symptoms in about half of those who tried it. Turmeric is easy to find at any grocery store, but when curcumin is used as a supplement, it is usually combined with other supplements to help with absorption. A common one is piperine, derived from black pepper. It’s difficult to use turmeric from food to get a pharmacologic effect. The usual dose is 400-500 mg two or three times daily. A month’s supply from a reliable online retailer I found cost about $10.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has psoriasis on his hands, and he thinks it’s from stress. He had psoriasis a long time ago, and now it reappeared. He is stressed because I am sick. Please tell me what cream he can use. Before, he used some good Yugoslavian cream called Vipsogal. -- M.A.M. ANSWER: Psoriasis is a common skin condition thought to be caused by abnormalities in the immune system. There are several forms, but most people with psoriasis notice plaques or papules on the skin. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the psoriasis, but the important part is that it needs evaluation before treatment, both to determine the correct diagnosis and assess severity. This includes at least a joint exam for psoriatic arthritis and a careful history to look for other associated conditions, such as in the eye. Severe disease may need systemic therapies, including biological ones. I looked up Vipsogal and it is a combination of several medicines, especially high-potency steroids. These are the mainstay of treatment for most people with mild to moderate psoriasis and are available in the U.S. and Canada only with a prescription. It’s a powerful medicine with the potential for real harm if used incorrectly. Your husband should see a dermatologist.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT DENTAL CLEANINGS WHILE WEARING BRACES Consult with your dentist. Dental hygienists and dentists are experienced at cleaning teeth that have braces. Typical visits for routine cleanings will not be much different than visits without braces. The staff will take X-rays and conduct a thorough examination of the teeth. Hygienists know how to manipulate cleaning tools around braces to clean effectively. Very often, cavities can be filled and even root canals performed with braces on teeth, so there’s no need to worry. Should braces be in the way, the dentist can work with the orthodontist and have a bracket temporarily removed and replaced to facilitate treatment.

Spring, summer, and fall fill us with hope; winter alone reminds us of the human condition. ~ Mignon McLaughlin, The Second Neurotic’s Notebook, 1966
After fleeing captivity, Saint Patrick said that the idea to flee came to him in a dream in which a voice promised him that, if he fled, he would safely find his way home to England. So he convinced sailors to let him board their ship. This was a ship those on board would soon abandon, eventually landing in France, where they wandered 200 miles in 28 days. But true to his dream, Saint Patrick was eventually reunited with his family in England.

Can you connect the transmission message from one of Alexander Graham Bell’s telephones to the other? Make sure they can send the message to each other!
Bell studied the human voice and worked with various schools for the deaf. Bell experimented with sound, working with devices such as a ‘harmonic telegraph’ (used to send multiple messages over a single wire) and a ‘phonautograph’ (used to record sound). He worked on acoustic telegraphy with his assistant, an electrical designer named Thomas Watson. Bell’s #irst words with the working telephone were spoken to his assistant Watson and were along the lines of “Mr Watson, come here. I want to see you.”

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

KEEP RODENTS OUT THIS W INTER M any people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt w ith once inside a home. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Rodents, the most common w inter pests, invade nearly 21 million U.S. homes each w inter. Despite all the proper precautions, if rodents still find their w ay inside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitc hen cabinets, along w alls, on top of w all studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and trac ks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents w ill also sometimes reveal themselves through scurrying sounds.

REMODELING SIM PLE WAYS TO TRIM YOUR ENERGY BILL THIS W INTER Embrace technology. Technology can help homeow ners control energy costs in various w ays. A programmable thermostat allow s men and w omen to determine w hen their homes’ thermostats turn on so they are not paying to heat an empty home. In addition to programmable thermostats, homeow ners can purchase real-time electricity monitors that allow them to track usage and monitor individual rooms and circuits so they can determine w here in their homes, if anyw here, they are needlessly w asting energy. In lieu of a porch light you need to leave on all night, install motion-detecting lights so you aren’t paying to light porches and w alkw ays that are not being used.

ROOFING & SIDING
Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or threeseason room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Gutters and downspouts should be in good condition. A roof is the sum of its parts, and that includes downspouts and gutters. If the gutters are clogged or damaged, they cannot direct water away from the house properly. Snow, leaves and other debris needs to be cleared from gutters to help them function at optimal capacity. Tire alignment is a w ay to reduce w ear on tires and help avoid steering and “ pulling” problems. Bridgestone Tires defines tire alignment as an adjustment of the vehicle’s suspension, or the system that connects a vehicle to its w heels. W hen tires are not properly aligned, drivers may notice uneven tread w ear. M isaligned tires also may cause the vehicle to pull to the left or right. Drivers w ho notice their steering w heel is off-center or vibrating w hen they are driving may need to adjust their tires’ alignment. Camber, or the inw ard or outw ard angle of the tire w hen view ed from the front of the vehicle, w ill be adjusted. In addition, “ toe,” or the extent to w hich the tires turn inw ard or outw ard w hen view ed from above, w ill be adjusted. Caster angle also helps balance steering, stability and cornering. Caster is the angle of your steering axis w hen view ed from the side of your vehicle. W hen tires are balanced correctly and aligned, vehicles w ill offer a smooth ride w ith little to no vibrations. Having tires serviced can maximize their performance and lifespan.

And grass in the green field... We from to-day, my Friend, will date The opening of the year. Love, now an universal birth, From heart to heart is stealing, From earth to man, from man to earth: —It is the hour of feeling. ~William Wordsworth (1770–1850), “To My Sister”
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Sometimes, despite the cold weather outside, we’re still looking for an icy treat inside. In my family’s dessert experiments, we’ve come up with some doozies, but here’s one you may not have tried: If you put popsicles in the blender, the creamy result tastes just like yummy sherbet. -- JoAnn * If your lunchbox could be fresher, here’s a tip from S.W. in Texas: Spray a piece of bread with vinegar and zip it up in your lunchbox overnight to clear out smells. * “You don’t need to buy a special brush to get at high ceilings and skylights: Simply cover a broom with a pillowcase to clean cobwebs off the ceiling. To clean a skylight, cover a mop with a double layer of paper towels or newspaper, and secure with clips. Spray the paper with window cleaner and heft it up!” -- M.E. in Arkansas * “Here are two more uses for orange peels: Remove all labels and hard parts of the peels. Toss orange peels in a quart Mason jar. When full, fill with vinegar and set in warm place for two weeks. Strain into spray bottle, then discard peels. Makes an excellent disinfectant and ant killer. Or, dry orange peels. When crisp-dry, break into pieces and toss in a blender, then blend to a powder. Put in airtight container to sprinkle on fruit salads or use for orange zest.” -- B.C. in New Hampshire * Pinprick hole in your rubber glove? Put the glove on and paint the hole with nail polish. It’ll seal up a small hole, making the glove usable again.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Rebuilding Lost Muscle A show of hands: How many of us feel that we’ve lost muscle strength during the pandemic? Unfortunately, the answer is that many of us have, and we’re going to have to fight to get it back. There we were, with regular workout and walking routines, on top of all our other daily activities. Along came COVID and its “stay home” restrictions. There were no more early morning walks at the mall, no more visits to the gym for weight training, no more workout or dance classes ... not even any Tai Chi at the senior center. And there went our muscle mass. Getting back to where we were is going to be tough ... but we need to try. Here are a few thoughts on rebuilding our muscle strength: • Look to YouTube for exercise videos designed for seniors. You’ll find thousands: seated exercises, workouts at home, walking workouts, low impact, beginners and so many more. • Sit in a kitchen chair and stand up. Sit down again. Stand up. Repeat 10-12 times. • Invest in hand weights (order them from Amazon and they’re delivered right to your door). Don’t kid yourself and assume you’re ready to wield a pair of 10-pound weights. Start small with 2-pound weights. If you need to order heavier ones, again, be cautious and don’t jump up more than 1-2 pounds. Try increasing the number of repetitions day by day. If necessary, use 1-gallon plastic jugs (one in each hand), partially filled with water, as weights. • If you have stairs in your home, use them to help your leg muscles. Increase the number of times you go up and down each day. Take it easy, especially at the beginning, but be persistent. Some of us are going to have to fight hard to rebuild the muscle mass we’ve lost. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Perhaps in part to its widespread use in St. Patrick’s Day decorations and imagery, the shamrock is widely considered the official symbol of Ireland. But while St. Patrick is believed to have used the shamrock to teach the Christian notion of the Holy Trinity, the clover was never an official symbol of Ireland. That designation is held by the harp, which has been featured on the coat of arms of Ireland for centuries. The harp also was adopted as the emblem of the Irish Free State when it separated from the United Kingdom in 1922.

Dog Goes on Strike Against Leashes DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Perry” tugs, fights and whines when I put a collar and leash on him. He will even flop down and refuse to move. I don’t know what to do. -- Mike D., Roanoke, Virginia DEAR MIKE: Oh, that’s frustrating! But you can help Perry to tolerate his collar and leash by making some adjustments and rebuilding a positive association with the leash. Here are a few tips to start with: * Check the fit and comfort of Perry’s collar. Sometimes owners buy stylish collars that look great on their pet but are uncomfortable and either too big or too small. * Consider a chest halter instead of a collar. This provides a supportive fit and when you tug on the leash, pressure is distributed around a dog’s torso rather than its neck. * Re-introduce Perry to the new collar or halter gradually. Show him the new gear while offering a treat at the same time. When he’s eating, gently drape the leash over his back. Give lots of praise at the same time. This starts to create positive connections with the new gear. * Conduct obedience training at home, in 10-minute sessions, while Perry wears the new collar or halter. Review basic commands of “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.” Leave the leash off at first. * Add the leash, but don’t tug on it. Continue obedience training while Perry wears the new gear. Take the gear off when done. * Gradually increase the time your dog wears the collar or harness and leash. This will take patience, lots of love and encouragement. Always be positive with Perry while retraining to the leash. And if, despite these efforts, he still doesn’t respond, contact a professional trainer to help you both get through this stuck spot. KALE, POTATO AND CHORIZO PIZZA Serves 4 1 recipe Stir-Together Flatbread and Pizza Dough (see below) or 1 pound frozen pizza or bread dough, thawed All-purpose flour, for sprinkling 8 kale leaves Olive oil, for brushing and drizzling 8 ounces cooked and crumbled chorizo, Portuguese or other spicy sausage 4 new potatoes, cooked and sliced thinly 1/2 cup chopped green onion (about 6 green onions, white and light green parts) Coarse black pepper Divide the dough into four equal parts and press or roll each piece into an 8-inch circle. Sprinkle flour on two large baking sheets and place two rounds of dough on each sheet. Prepare a hot fire on one side of your grill for indirect cooking. Oil a perforated grill rack and place over direct heat. Brush the kale with olive oil. Grill leaves for 1 minute on each side, or until slightly charred and softened. Quickly trim off the bottom of the stalk and strip the leaves from the stems. Finely chop the leaves and set aside. To grill directly on the grill grate, brush one side of each pizza with olive oil and place, oiled side down, on the direct heat side. Grill for 1 to 2 minutes, or until you see the dough starting to bubble. Brush the top side with olive oil and flip each pizza, using tongs, onto a baking sheet. Quickly brush with more olive oil, then spoon on a fourth of the sliced potato and grilled kale. Sprinkle with sausage and green onion. Drizzle with olive oil and season with pepper. Using a grill spatula, place each pizza on the indirect side of the fire. Cover and grill for 4 or 5 minutes until the kale has slightly wilted and the topping is hot. Serve hot.

POLL Some say the United States should not send troops into the Russia-Ukraine conflict because allegedly Ukraine is of strategic importance to the United States, many Americans do not want a war, and the danger of a superpower confrontation. Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine? • Yes! • No!
According to a 2011 study published in the peer-reviewed journal the Annual Review of Nutrition, experimental data from animal studies suggests that maternal undernutrition among pregnant women may play a role in preterm birth. The study also reported that a lack of specific nutrients during pregnancy may influence gestation length by increasing the likelihood that a woman will give birth before reaching full-term. Women who are pregnant or hope to become pregnant can speak with their physicians about the role nutrition can play in a healthy, full-term pregnancy.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Shifting Perspectives I used to dismiss when adults told me to slow down driving through neighborhoods. Now I’m in my 30s with young children and can’t help wanting to install speed bumps for the teenagers in our neighborhood. My wife thinks I’m crazy, but going 40+ Mph in suburbia is too fast!
S E V RA Kudos for Hard Work Kudos to Kate and her staff at Dollar General in LeRoy. With her guidance, together they brought the store from an unsafe mess to a store that’s clean, stocked, and a pleasure to shop in. This store was in very bad shape, and they have worked very hard. Thank you, and know you are appreciated. Auto Repair Super Powers! Hats off to Michael Kurzawski, the owner of Four Seasons Collision shop in Brockport. This guy embodies integrity and good will. I took my Subaru over to Mike’s shop. (He doesn’t know me at all.) I asked about a “popped out fender” on my car. He took a look at it and within minutes knew exactly how to fix it, and he did. He wouldn’t take any money, and even graciously refused a tip. What a guy! As we continue to make an effort to support local retailers, let’s remember Mike when you need auto body repairs. He’s the real deal. Thanks Mike! - Ray in Brockport. Fire Dept. I wish to express how very impressed I am with the Springwater Fire Department. Their prompt action and experience which they portrayed for neighbors manifested in sincere community service. It undoubtedly saved a home from being reduced to ashes by morning. Thank you to all the persons and responders for your service. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Ukraine I am so sad for the poor people of the Ukraine. How horrible to wake up one day to have a ruthless dictator decide to take over your country! A peaceful, democratic land that had been co-existing with every country, including Russia, is now forced to fight and, for many, to flea their beloved homes. Too bad the sanctions that Putin is incurring aren’t harsh enough to dissuade him from this senseless aggression. Perhaps in time, NATO will be able to “peacekeep” for the sake of all. Until then, pray for the Ukrainians! Don’t Polute! Littering is very bad. To see bottles, cans, cups, paper, cigarette butts, and more strewn about makes me feel sad. We must prevent litter from getting on the ground before it is found. Children should draw or write a page describing a beach or park filled with litter compared to those which are clean. To litter is very mean.

Judy A. (LeVesque) (Moir) Gaedeke January 22, 2022
St. George - Forsythe Funeral Home and Monuments
Wayland: Judy A. (LeVesque) (Moir) Gaedeke – 79 years of age, passed away late Saturday afternoon, January 22, 2022 at her home in Wayland.
109 West Naples St. • Wayland, NY 14572
(585) 728-2100
Judy was born September 7, 1942 in Presque Isle, ME, the daughter of Percy and Addie (Babbin) LeVesque. Judy resided in several different areas throughout her life including, Avoca, Naples, Atlanta, Dansville, LoonLake, Wayland, Nunda, Virginia for over 10 years and back to Wayland for the past several years. Her employment included years at Gunlocke; owning and operating the Hair Draft Salon and Tan in Virginia and finally as an assistant manager at Family Dollar in Stuarts Draft, VA. Judy was first married to Galen “Dale” Moir who passed away in 1973 and she then married John Gaedeke who passed away in 2002. Her hobbies were many. She loved her flowers; gardening; watching birds; spending time in the sun and at the beach; and not to forget all of her pets throughout the years. Mostly though, Judy enjoyed spending time with her family. Judy and Ronald Snyder met each other and had a loving companionship for over 13 years (however Ron thought it was 10 years and often had to be corrected!). They enjoyed each other’s company and she loved to take daytrip excursions and travel with her “bestie!” Judy was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Addie LeVesque; her siblings, Rodney LeVesque, Robert P. LeVesque, Gary LeVesque, Sandra Gilbert, Wayne LeVesque and Roger LeVesque. She is survived by her loving companion, Ronald Snyder of Atlanta; her children, Gail Sick (Steve Kota) of Cohocton, Dale Moir of Troutman, SC, David (Terri) Moir of Atlanta, Lori (Bob) Stauffer of Stuarts Draft, VA, Jeff ( Judi) Moir of Portageville, Vicki (Allen) Webster of Dansville, Mark ( Jessie) Gaedeke of Bloomfield; her step-daughter, MK Gaedeke Roland of Williamson; her Virginia daughter, Patti Boyd and her family; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her siblings, Carlton LeVesque of Wayland, Robert “Bid” LeVesque of Atlanta, Carol “Cubby” Campbell of Wayland, Milton (Nancy) LeVesque of North Cohocton, Kenneth LeVesque of Canandaigua, Ruth LeVesque (Carl Hoffman) of Arvada, CO and David “Putter” (Tina) LeVesque of Cohocton; along with many nieces and nephews. At this time there are no funeral services planned. A celebration of Judy’s life will take place later in the year. Contributions in memory of Judy A. Gaedeke may be made to the Hornell Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Rd., Hornell, NY 14843 or to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123. Please visit www.stgeorgefuneralhome.com for fond memories and online condolences.
THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those services. Men and women trusted to make those decisions upon the death of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy. STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Avoid high-fat foods at lunchtime. Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also negatively affect energy levels when consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat highfat foods for lunch won’t get the afternoon energy boost that lowfat, healthy lunches will provide.

CLERK
The incumbent employs generally accepted accounting procedures in the maintenance and review of financial accounts and records of the appointing authority and assists the Director and/or any higher level financial personnel, if applicable, with grant applications, budgeting, purchasing, and contract oversight. Duties may include the supervision of subordinate clerical employees as specified by the appointing authority.
The work of employees in this class involves performing routine clerical duties or assisting in the performance of more difficult or responsible clerical work. The work is performed under direct supervision, permitting some exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Detailed instructions may be given for new or difficult assignments. In the County service, employees in this class obtain training and experience which can lead to higher levels of work assignments and responsibilities in their respective agencies.
