Carnations

One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

WHAT IS A WILL?

The online financial resource Investopedia notes that wills are legally enforceable documents that dictate how people want their affairs handled and assets allocated in the wake of their deaths.

Wills should include a host of information, including who a person wants to assume guardianship of their minor-aged children should they pass away. This is especially important information to include in a will, as surviving relatives may have to go to court to contest guardianship if parents do not dictate who they want to serve as guardians in their wills.

William Molyneux

May 25, 2024

William Molyneux of Dansville passed away May 25, 2024, at age 75. Bill was born in Dansville in 1949 to David and Barbara (Milligan) Molyneux.

He was a 1967 graduate of Dansville High School and attended Alfred State College before serving in the United States Coast Guard from 1968 to 1972. In 1975, Bill started Molyneux Construction, and was well known in the community for his honesty and impeccable work. A modest, generous man, Bill always saw the good in people and made friends easily.

In 1987 Bill was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and from then on, tirelessly volunteered his time teaching others about the Bible and the hope that God’s Kingdom promises for a better life now and in the future. Bill was a beloved elder in the Dansville Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Bill was a great storyteller and had a keen sense of humor. Playing cards and board games with his sons when they were growing up and kayaking and camping with them were among his fondest memories. Whenever he would be the (inevitable) winner of the Monopoly games they played, Bill would jokingly apologize and say, “Sorry guys. I’m a businessman.” He loved to take walks with his family and contemplate the beauty of creation. e last several years, Bill enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter, Scout, whom he adored.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Helen (Brownell) Molyneux; his beloved sons, Michael Molyneux, David (Whitney) Molyneux, and Daniel (Taylor) Molyneux; his cherished sister, Susan (Alex) Barr; granddaughter Scout Helena Molyneux; and sisters-in-law, Cathy (Dave) Reinholtz, Deb (Jimmy) Walker, and Cindy Mansfield (John Westfall), as well as several cousins, nephews, and a niece.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-law, Jimmy Walker; his brother-in-law, David Brownell; sister-in-law, Candy Brownell; and his cousin, James Molyneux.

e family would also like to express gratitude to the CareFirst Hospice team, Painted Post, for their compassionate and thoughtful assistance these past few months.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 349 Main Street, Dansville, NY. ere will be no prior calling hours. Arrangements are by the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., Dansville.

Online remembrances may be left at HindleFuneralHome.com

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas

If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re ableand separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

TELLING SIGNS COMMON INSECTS ARE INFESTING A LAWN

Grubs: Grubs like to feast on the roots of grass right below the surface. Michigan State University Extension Turf & Landscape reports that grub damage can appear from March to early May or from mid-September to early November. The lawn and garden experts at GardenTech® note that wilted grass blades are often the first indicator of a grub infestation, which is followed by patches of brown turf and eventually death. Crows, skunks and moles eat grubs, so the sight of them in a lawn could indicate an infestation.

Q&A Master Gardeners

with the

My hostas have a milky substance coming out of the new shoots. This is the first time I have ever seen this. I’ve cut off the affected shoots. Any ideas as to the cause of this?

Without seeing the plant to identify exactly what it could be,a white “milky substance” around your hostas could be a number of things, including two of themostcommon:anthracnoseand slime mold.

If it is slime mold, then your approach of “cutting off the affected shoots,” is

e

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

spot on. Removing the affected area is the best treatment, being careful not to allow spores to spread. Very often mulch fosters such growth and spores spread even with the best of intentions. I have found the removal of all debris around hostas to be the best practice in preventing slime mold. Larger growth concentrations, though, may call for the use of a fungicide, which I recommend not using without consulting your local Cornell Cooperative Extension Office. Anthracnoseisalsoafungusandisthe

most common and most widespread in cultivating good hosta growth. The good news with anthracnose is that it won’t kill the plant, but treating it can be tricky. To rid your garden of this fungus could involve a multi-step approach, particularly if the fungus goes unnoticed for some time. I would begin by removing the affected plant and any fungal growth noticeable on the mulch or ground surrounding it. Then, contact your local Cornell Cooperative Extension office. The extension office has at

its disposal a number of resources, including a team of Master Gardeners who can assist with identifying the problem and recommending specific resources for further assistance.

Happy Gardening!

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

Here’s A Tip

* If you keep aloe around for soothing your skin a er being out in the sun, take this tip from J.C. in Florida: “Keep aloe in your fridge; it keeps it cool, and it feels even more refreshing.”

* Want to eat more fruits and veggies? Keep pre-cut fruit and easy veggie dippers like carrots, bell pepper strips and celery at eye level in see-through containers in your fridge. e more you see it, the more you will eat it.

* To create an easy resting mat for toddlers, sew three pillowcases together in a row along the long end. When needed, stuff three pillows in, and it creates a long mat, suitable for naptime or TV time.

Community, Collaboration, and Curtain Calls: Celebrating Decades of Theater with Geneseo Community Players

Through the combined efforts of the Geneseo Rotary Club, the State Teacher’s College, and the community, Geneseo Community Players (GCP) was formed in 1950. GCP has produced one, two, and as many as four full-length productions each year since (besides its three-year COVID break).

e GCP is led by a board of area residents with varied experience who feel a strong commitment to the community and theater, dedicated to engaging local talent for all production aspects. e GCP is thankful for arts patrons and grants from the Genesee Valley Council for the Arts and Rochester Area Community Foundation to provide live theatre experiences for the public.

Providing Geneseo and surrounding communities with entertaining, high-quality theatrical productions, GCP selects titles that are a mixture of classic and newer offerings. GCP arranges opportunities for first-time playwrights, directors, performers, and technical artists to participate onstage and backstage.

In the next few years, they’d like to produce not just one or two events a year but entire seasons of theatre at a variety of venues. ey want to reach missed audiences and bring back fans who have forgotten the magic they can find in a theatre.

GCP boasts the magic of productions with casts of performers and technical crew in various age groups. ere, younger folks “catch the theater bug” as adults are reminded why they got involved in theatre in the first place and feed off the enthusiasm of the younger participants. GCP strives to incorporate these opportunities as much as possible. ey also pair veteran directors with young performers in theatre camps. Mentoring also occurs within stage crews as younger folks are taught how to work lights, fly rails, organize props, call cues, and other jobs. Training is inherent in the process.

Over the years, a variety of talented performers have graced the stage in GCP productions. Ages range from those well into their eighties and nineties to youth as young as seven. In shows like Annie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, they’ve seen the full range. ey’ve even had dogs onstage in e Wizard of Oz and Annie who have been younger and older than their scene partners!

Asking about personal favorite productions, GCP members said is “like asking a parent which of their children is the favorite. ere are classics like Oliver, Annie, and Music Man that GCP has performed multiple times in different decades. Different cast members and stage crews interpret similar material, which makes the process exciting. Productions also o en include intergenerational casts, with family members bowing together during curtain calls. Particularly special was the full circle moment when Eric Grammas, who began as a young actor in Oliver, in his twenties directed the poignant Brighton Beach Memoirs, including his parents in the cast.”

e GCP is currently casting and beginning work on Rupert Holmes’ e Mystery of Edwin Drood, a warm-hearted show-withina-show that will captivate audiences with its charm and interactive whodunit intrigue loosely based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished

mystery. Performances are scheduled for July 19-21, 2024.

GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and the time has come once again to begin searching for a gift for dear old dad. Father’s Day gift shoppers have long since abandoned the notion that a new necktie is what dad really wants, but finding a gift that expresses your love and appreciation for the old man can still prove somewhat challenging.

Oftentimes, the best gifts are the ones that fulfill a need or want, and Father’s Day gifts are no exception.

Memorial Day

Local DMV

Memorial Day in our community is a heartfelt celebration combining remembrance with the joyful start of summer. From what I saw, so many towns waved their flags and patriotic decorations, honoring the brave souls who served our nation even through the rain. The annual parade is a highlight, featuring local marching bands, veterans, and community groups proudly making their way down Main Street. Thank you to those involved.

CSA Boxes

Went to local DMV with son to get his permit. He lost his glasses at work so went to have eye appointment to get new ones. With all paperwork in hand from eye exam DMV said there’s no proof of passing eye exam even though he has new prescription for glasses. Had to go back to eye glass place 45 min drive to have eye Dr. Sign paper saying he passed eye test. Then still given hassle because he didn’t have his glasses. What is an eye test paperwork for then. Tired of people wasting time even eye place said same paper they gave him. Just a waste of time on both ends.

A big shoutout to our local farms for the CSA boxes that are starting out for the season. Your hard work and dedication is appreciated!

YOLO

Groceries

We would like to thank everyone who was present at Seneca Farms last weekend for tolerating our flamboyant rambunctious cast party. We do realize that we were a little on the loud side, but hey, YOLO! we are honestly so surprised you didn’t critique our exuberant celebrations. we may have had a little too much ice cream, but hey, YOLO! We also would like too thank all of the workers who stayed late to deliver that heavenly treat known as ice cream to each and every one and all of us. Seneca Farms, you are the light that guides us in this confusing world.

We keep talking about high prices for food. There’s all kinds of reasons or excuses for this. COVID? That’s over. Shipping from California Ports. That’s over. Fuel cost vary. So why aren’t costs returning to the original prices? I went into one store for hotdogs. It seemed way too expensive so I went to a different store. I bought 3x the amount for $2.50 more. There’s no excuse other than corporate GREED taking advantage of consumers. I’m sick of these companies or corporations bleeding us dry. The old saying, “the rich get richer, the poor get poorer”is a fact”! Please do your homework even if the store is local or convenient. That’s the only way we can fight back.

Patient Seems Unsure of ALS Diagnosis

DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). I have been diagnosed with this horrible, debilitating disease, and I don’t know where I am headed. I went to a hospital for a second opinion and additional testing to rule out other possible causes of this numbness. Nary a test was done -- the neurologist looked at the electromyography (EMG) done by a neuromuscular doctor at another facility, and he just agreed with the diagnosis.

I wanted to get tests done to see if it was perhaps a concussion, if it was from using yard sprays or from COVID vaccines, or if it was due to my having a terrible bad back for years, but none of these were even considered. I am deteriorating rapidly. Would you please give me some suggestions? Am I wrong for seeking other causes? -- J.B.

ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with ALS. I understand why you would like to believe there are other possibilities for this because there are no treatments for ALS that can stop the progression of this fatal disease.

The diagnosis of ALS is made after a thorough examination and history review. Electrodiagnostic studies, like an EMG or a nerve conduction test, can help support the diagnosis, but they do not make the diagnosis themselves. The nerve conduction study is normal for ALS, while the EMG shows the nerves that are not connecting to the muscles. Other diseases of the muscles and muscle nerves should be considered. MRI scans are usually performed, as they can identify conditions that mimic ALS. The terrible back you mention could include a condition called cervical myelopathy, which has some features that can be mistaken for ALS. Routine blood and urine testing should be done to exclude other conditions, such as Lyme disease, and the spinal fluid is sometimes analyzed if the neurologist suspects immune-medicated nerve disease.

However, none of the other possibilities that you mention is likely to be confused for ALS by an experienced neurologist who does a complete exam.

I have three concerns: The first is that you are suggesting you may not have had a thorough evaluation so far. Second, the only symptom you mention is numbness, and although this can occasionally happen with ALS, you are much more likely to have weakness and muscle twitching without numbness. Third, ALS tends to progress slowly, not rapidly.

For all these reasons, and because you need to be sure of your condition, I recommend getting another opinion from a neurologist who doesn’t rely on someone else’s history review and exam.

DID YOU KNOW?

Howhouseholdsearntheirincome haschangeddramaticallyoverthe last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census andAmericanCommunitySurveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
