TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS
Consider depth of field. Sometimes you will have no control over the busy background an interesting subject is in front of in a planned photograph. A shallow depth of field achieved with a wide aperture can blur a background and separate the subject from that background, according to Shotkit, a photography and gear authority. Some postproduction work also can be done to blur backgrounds in apps like Lightroom or through Photoshop.

* A chef traditionally wears white because the chef of the first prime minister of France (1815) believed it was the most hygienic of all colors.
* Early Hoover vacuum cleaners were hard to sell because potential customers refused to believe they could have that much dirt in their carpets.
* “Hurkle-durkle” is an old Scottish word meaning to lie in bed after it’s time to get up and get going.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS
Miles Davis (1926-1991):
Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day
In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include:
• Taking the stairs
• Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work
• Getting off the bus or subway one stop early
• Parking in the farthest space from the door
• Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

HOW
Take breaks from the news. Overconsumption of news is one potential contributor to mental fatigue. That’s especially so in the digital age, when the latest headlines are never further than a smartphone away. Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT
Vary workouts and exercise regularly. Varying workouts is a good idea because doing so can prevent repetitive-use injuries and prevent overuse of muscles. Repetitive-use injuries such as shin splints and tendinitis require extended rest to heal, and that can derail your routine and nullify your progress. Vary workouts so you are not always working the same muscles, and don’t mistake varying workouts for varying workout schedules. Working out five days one week and one day the next increases your risk of injury.

Preventing Ear Infections in Dogs
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My German Shepherd puppy, Max, seems to get an ear infection every other week. He’s miserable, shaking his head from side to side. And he hates having ear drops put in -- a job that gets more di cult the larger he gets! How can I stop the constant ear infections?
--
Betsy J., Syracuse, New York
DEAR BETSY: Dogs can be very prone to ear infections. e shape of their ear canal is the most likely reason. Allergies and ear mites vie for the title of top irritant in a pet’s ear canal.
e symptoms are probably very familiar to you. Dark discharge from the ears, accompanied by an unusual, dank odor, frequent head shaking, scratching at the ears, and perhaps some scabbing of the outer ear. A veterinarian can pinpoint redness and swelling inside the ear canal as well.
Treatment should always start at the veterinarian’s o ce. ere, cleaning and disinfection of the ear will be done, and then your dog will likely be prescribed medication -- typically eardrops -- to be administered for up to 10 days. A er treatment is complete, you’ll want to prevent future infections by gently cleaning Max’s ears with an ear cleaning solution for dogs and cotton balls (not Q-tips).
Getting a big dog to hold still for treatment can be a struggle. Here’s one method: If he’s very reactive, try to stand over Max with one leg on each side and his head facing forward, away from you. Hold him under his muzzle and apply the medication or cleaning solution to one ear and massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds. Let go of his muzzle and allow him to shake his head. Repeat on the other side. Finish by gently swiping the ear canal with cotton balls.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Exercise Builds Strength and Improves Limits in Those With Arthritis
DEAR DR. ROACH: I so appreciated your recent column on arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis. I’m a big exerciser; however, I have always heard that this arthritis is caused or exacerbated by wear and tear. I was surprised to hear otherwise!
I have modified or given up a handful of exercises that seem to cause my joints more pain, specifically fullbody weight-bearing on my wrists. Are these exercises I can incorporate back into my routine? I have found that certain activities, i.e. card shuffling, buttoning, etc., hurt my thumbs, so I have made adaptations. Should I work through the pain, assuming that I am not causing any more damage to my joints? -- L.D.
ANSWER: Most exercise is not damaging to joints, but high-impact or high-frequency activities can certainly worsen arthritis pain.
For arthritis of the knees and hips, I recommend walking as the best exercise, starting slow and building up based on what a person can tolerate. It’s the movement, not the resistance, that’s most important, so swimming (or just walking in a pool) is a great option for people who feel too much pain from walking.
For the smaller joints of the hands and wrists, I would recommend activities that don’t hurt you as much. Stretching the joints and movements like squeezing are a good place to start. You might consider a “stress ball” or a hand therapy ball to provide some resistance and build up hand strength.
Adapting your activities to your limitations is a good idea, but you also want to work on improving those limitations. A physical or occupational therapist is your best partner in designing a program.
Don’t forget that over-the-counter topical antiinflammatory medicines, like diclofenac, are pretty effective with small joints and are very safe.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

STATISTICS ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Recent findings from the National MS Society estimate nearly one million people in the United States have MS.
ADVICE FOR BLOOD DONORS
Unlike other marvels of modern medicine, quality blood is an important health component that cannot be created synthetically. Blood shortages continue to plague medical establishments across the globe. For those who require transfusions, blood from volunteer donors can be the difference between life and death. However, many people are apprehensive about donating blood because of their own unique fears of the unknown or from past poor experiences with the process. With a little knowledge and some preparation, donating blood can be made much easier.
Confirming donors’ health: One of the first steps to donating blood is to determine donors’ eligibility. Potential donors undergo a short health screening and are asked various questions to determine their eligibility. The presence of certain illnesses or other disqualifications helps ensure that the blood will be healthy and that the blood drawn will not have a negative effect on the donor.
The American Red Cross states that potential donors will undergo a pin prick on the finger to test for iron levels in their blood. This is to ensure that donors will not be made anemic from giving blood.
Frequency of donation, weight and age also will be considered before prospective donors are allowed to donate blood. Many organizations urge prospective donors to avoid giving blood if they have had simple dental work done within 24 hours or major dental work in the past month. Dental work in general can dislodge bacteria, which can get into the blood stream and cause systemic infection.
Preparing to donate: Potential donors are urged to eat a healthy diet full of iron-rich foods. It is adviseable to drink an extra 16 ounces of water or a nonalcoholic fluid prior to donating. A healthy, low-fat meal prior to donating also is recommended, as the Red Cross says fatty foods can adversely affect blood tests that check for infectious diseases, and the blood may not be used as a result.
Needles are no big deal: According to Justin Kreuter, MD, medical director of the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center in Rochester, Minnesota, while the needles used to collect blood are slightly larger than those used for immunizations at the doctor’s office, the needles have silicone on them to make the process of donating more comfortable for donors.
Donation duration: Donating blood does not take a long time. It may take between 15 and 20 minutes for donation center workers to extract blood. Donating plasma or platelets may require more time. Allocate at least an hour to undergo the medical exam and to rest after the donation.
Post-donation: Donors are urged to rest for a few minutes after the donating and to enjoy the snacks and beverages being offered. The Red Cross says people should avoid performing any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day after donating. It’s also adviseable to drink an extra four glasses of liquids and avoid alcohol during the day following a donation.
Donating blood can save lives and reassure donors that they’re doing their part to help others.

Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. TELLING SIGNS COMMON INSECTS ARE INFESTING A LAWN
Chinch bugs: The experts at BobVila.com report that chinch bugs are not necessarily problematic when their populations are limited to around 10 to 15 bugs per square foot of lawn. In such instances, chinch bug populations are generally controlled by ants and ladybugs. However, extreme heat and drought, problems that have plagued various regions in North America in recent years, reduce the populations of bugs that feed on chinch bugs, thus increasing the population of these unwanted guests that feed on grass. GardenTech® indicates that damage from chinch bugs is most visible between June and September. That damage begins with grass taking on a purple tinge before it turns yellow and then brown after wilting.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC
Climate control: Attics are converted to provide residents with more livable space. Converted space is only livable if the climate within the attic can be controlled so it’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. An existing HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable, forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats to offset that discomfort. That also could affect the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward with an attic renovation, homeowners should contact HVAC professionals to determine if attic spaces can be serviced with the existing units and ductwork, or if an alternative arrangement must be worked out to make the spaces livable.

HOBER SEALING
STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4
• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf
• 2 cups half-and-half
• 4 egg yolks
• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)
1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter
3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.
4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.
Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.
Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

What plants are most effective to grow in containers?
Most vegetables grown in a backyard can be grown in containers, although a container’s diameter and depth need to be considered when selecting what vegetables to grow. Plant density (number of vegetable plants per container) depends on individual plant space requirements and root depth. Containers-grown plants require more frequent fertilization typically than in ground plants because of the limited space within the container for drawing nutrients. Fertilizer can be mixed with the potting mix pre-planting, or you
GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES
(NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill.
Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

can purchase potting mix with a starter fertilizer mixed in. Plants grown in containers need frequent watering as containers dry out fast. Watering daily is necessary to provide adequate moisture for plant growth. Apply enough water to reach the bottom of the container. Allow excess water to drain out. Avoid wetting the leaves when watering as this will encourage development of foliar diseases. Try not to let your container dry out completely between watering as this will lead to flower and fruit drop of. The size of the container needs will depend a lot on the vegetable or herbs you
plant. Most herbs can be grown in ½-1 gal containers. Cabbage, Cucumbers, green beans, leaf lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, and cherry tomatoes can be planted in a 1-gallon containers. Beets, Carrots, Eggplant, Peppers, and radishes need 2-gallon containers. Your regular tomatoes will need 3-gallon containers. My personal preference is a
20 gallon grow bag where you can grow multiple vegetables together if they are companion plants (they can and like to grow together). Note: some don’t like to be grown together.

SENIOR NEWS By

Heavy Li ing of Pet Ownership
For seniors, there are several questions that arise when we consider whether we should adopt another pet a er the death of a long-loved companion. ere’s the scary thought of potential veterinary bills or whether we should own a dog that needs to be walked every day. Or maybe we think of adopting a young cat who will likely outlive us or an elderly cat who probably won’t.
I rmly believe, however, that when it comes to deciding about adopting a pet that the biggest potential problem comes down to heavy li ing.
e rule of four, I call it: ere are four likely scenarios wherein, without intervention or assistance, heavy li ing is required.
For the economical 40-pound bag of dog chow, I would need to li it into the shopping cart, put it on the conveyor belt at checkout, get it into the car and once home, get it into the house. at’s four li ings.
is applies to even the 20-pound jug of cat litter. I do the math: 4 times 20 equals 80 pounds I’d be li ing without interventions.
Interventions can take the shape of a strong teenage boy angel who happens to walk by in the pet supplies aisle; a store clerk who gets down cat litter from a very high shelf; checkouts with a radar gun on a stretchy cord that will reach to the cart to scan the bar code; and big neighbors who happen to be strolling by just as I’m pulling in my driveway.
Without luck, however, there have been too many times when all four li ings have been required. I su er the next day.
I have decided to cut my pet-related li ing down to none. I have signed up for home delivery at two stores, never mind the expense. It’s worth every penny to see other people walk up my driveway carrying the heavy items, fully appreciative of the fact that I don’t have to do any li ing whatsoever.

DID YOU KNOW?
Though office work might not be the first profession individuals think of in relation to elevating one’s cancer risk, sitting at a desk for most of the day can increase a person’s risk for cancer. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, sitting for most of the day without engaging in physical activity puts individuals at increased risk for cancer. How much extra risk does that entail? Though no two individuals are the same, studies have equated sitting for eight hours a day without any physical activity to the risk posed by obesity and smoking. The DFCI notes that sitting over long periods of time has been known to cause increased blood pressure, high cholesterol and excess body fat around the waist, each of which have been identified as factors that increase a person’s risk for cancer.

GWEN CLIFTON FROM THE FRUIT BELT OPENS WOMEN’S HOMELESS SHELTERS
BY LORI BRUTON
GwendolynCli on,FounderandExecutiveDirectorof Safe Way Homes of Greater Rochester Inc., manages two new women’s shelters in Rochester, one on the eastside and one on the westside, providing a safe place for women to heal and grow.
As a child, Cli on dreamed of helping people. As a young woman, Gwen cared for her mother, aunt, and herself, but says she su ered juggling all of it. She had to learn self-care, which isn’t sel sh, and incorporates self-care into Safe Way’s program.
When Irish and Italian immigrants rst settled in Rochester, they planted fruit and nuts because that’s how they knew to survive from their old countries. e area was aptly named the fruit belt, with streets named a er fruits and nuts, such as Walnut, Orange, and Lime. Cli on’s was the rst black family to move into the neighborhood.
When Cli on was about 10 years old, the neighborhood began to change. Her friends moved and stores changed hands to di erent ethnic groups, including Asian, Black, Caribbean, Cuban, and Dominican families. e diverse neighborhood gave Cli on a passport into the homes of people di erent than she. eir homes had pictures and décor of their country and culture. She learned to respect other people’s cultures.
Her parents taught her how to restore hope in people who felt no hope. ey lived in an upstairs apartment on Walnut Street. Her mother was the rst black woman to work at Ragu Foods making $25/hr. She decided to stay in the apartment even a er drug dealers moved in downstairs.
e neighborhood su ered dramatically during the crack epidemic, middle class evaporating to lower class, as poverty swept through. Parents of all ethnic groups in the neighborhood were on drugs. Crack did not discriminate. Cli on’s parents became the aunt and uncle of the neighborhood, taking kids in, feeding them, and sometimes buying them school clothes. Her dad taught boys how to tie a tie and took them shing. Her parents led by example and werethe rsttoeducateGwenonsocialworkandevangelism.
Cli on served as a social worker for 25 years. She assisted people in their worst states. She says, “Trauma is like cancer. It doesn’t discriminate. We do, but trauma doesn’t.” e road to despair can come from many di erent avenues: loving the wrong person, a mental breakdown, substance or alcohol abuse, or being kicked out by a friend or family member.
Cli on volunteered at a women’s homeless shelter for over ten years. Homelessness can happen to anyone at any time, she says. Some women fall on bad luck. Some have learned nothing but the poverty lifestyle and continue to cycle. Some lost their jobs during the pandemic.
ese homeless women come from all walks of life. One woman had a beautiful home in the suburbs. One day her husband came home and told her they were done. She needed help getting support, safety, and documentation.
Cli on developed her passion for and experience helping the homeless women population, especially crisis interventions such as domestic violence. She says, “It’s not just a city thing. e rural population has a huge amount of domestic violence cases.”
Over 800 Rochester residents experienced homelessness in 2019 and that number is growing. According to the Department of Housing, 16.4% of Monroe County’s population lives in severe housing and below the poverty line. e largest demographic living in poverty are females 25-34, followed by females 18-24 and females 35-44. Within those demographics in Monroe County, the poverty-level ethnic majority is mostly white, then blacks, and then Hispanics.
Safe Way Homes is a cultural response distressed women have been looking for. is movement, Making Way, helps women heal and provides a safe place where they can discover themselves and overcome trauma. Making Way can break the cycle of poverty and racism through shared resources.
Gi s and talents came together to make Gwen’s dream a reality. Ashley Cross, pastor at Glory House International, encouraged Gwen to pursue her dream. Denise Williams helped Safe Way nd two homes. Northhampton County Park Heroes
Hats off and a big thank you to the park staff and volunteers that maintain the miles of trails in Northhampton Park. With the many windstorms, and numerous dead ash trees, it has been quite a chore clearing trails so that the park hikers are able to enjoy their time in the park safely. You are appreciated!
Anonymous Donor
My friend and I were having lunch on 4/26. Our waitress told us an anonymous donor paid part of our bill. A special thank you for your kindness. It made our day!
Thank you volunteer organizations
I’d just like to give a quick shout-out to all the volunteer non-profit organizations out there doing great things for their communities. Whether it be picking up trash along trails, keeping fire hydrants clear of debris, helping to keep food pantry shelves stocked/organized, collecting items for animal shelters and beyond... THANK YOU!
HOMETOWN PHOTOS
Some Home Owners
Home owners that have abandoned swimming pools in their back yard are probably breeding mosquitos. Some form of wildlife could fall into it and not be able to get out. Of course some folks just have no pride in what their property looks like. Just sayin....
Missing Front License Plates
Why do so many vehicles with NY license plates on the back now not have front license plates? (This is especially true of Teslas, which Elon Musk doesn’t bother to build with a front license plate holder, but also plenty of other vehicles.) Did NY eliminate the requirement of a front plate without telling the rest of us? Or is this just another example of people thinking the rules only apply to others? The Thruway might be able to avoid a toll increase if they were allowed to charge fines to all of the vehicles passing through their toll cameras that have NY rear plates but no front plate!
Disrespectful
I sure hope that the mowers at a local cemetery are held accountable for destroying flowers that were left at graves. Destroyed flowers were spread by the mower and left. How could anyone do that!

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE
Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST
Do your research: Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.
HOW TO CREATE A ROMANTIC NIGHT AT HOME
Alternate watching films: Both of you probably have all-time favorite movies, but they may not be the same films. Encourage bonding time by queueing up two separate films to watch, yours and your significant other’s. Whether one is a rom-com and the other is an action flick, watch them in succession while cuddling on the sofa.

THINGS PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CREATING WILLS
Pets: Some people prefer to use their will to also dictate guardianship for their pets and to leave money or property to help care for those pets. However, pets do not have the legal capacity to own property, so one shouldn’t gift money directly to pets in a will.
Allan Joseph “Jed” Carmody
April 22, 2023
CANASERAGA, NY – Allan Joseph “Jed” Carmody, 67, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness and a battle with Follicular Non Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Born on February 9, 1956 in Dansville, NY, Jed is survived by son, Seth (Laurie) Carmody and grandchildren, Ellie and Owen, all of Baltimore, Maryland; daughter, Ashley of Dansville; sisters, Carol Sherrod and Ellen Totman, both of Dansville, Betty Carmody of Scottsville; brothers, Jerry Sullivan and Joe Sullivan, both of Dansville; several nieces and nephews; many life-long pals and dear friends. He was predeceased by siblings Delores Castro, Kay Hamilton, Norman Carmody, John Carmody and Jay Carmody.
Jed enjoyed all the people, places, and experiences in his life – from his old neighborhood and White Sabers friends, to his classmates of all ages (he graduated Dansville Central Class of 1974). Most of all though, he cherished having children and a home of his own in Canaseraga, NY where he lived for the last 40 years.
Jed worked in construction all his life and was known for his outstanding masonry, which he often said was a skill he learned from work mentors and friends who were the “best of the best.” He worked for many years at Bennett Brothers Construction in Dansville and for Spoleta Construction in Rochester.
An avid hunter and sherman, Jed loved being in the woods with his brothers, nephews, friends, and his beloved German Shorthair, Greta. He enjoyed his home and neighbors, gardening, canning, cooking, listening to smooth jazz, and watching the Bu alo Bills. He was happiest when he was with those nearest and dearest to him. Jed was a long-time member of the Dansville Rod and Gun Club and a member of the American Legion - Daniel Goho Post 87 in Dansville.
Friends may call on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hindle Funeral Home 271 Main Street, Dansville, NY 14437.
Friends are invited to gather after at the American LegionDaniel Goho Post 87 on 34 Elizabeth Street, Dansville, NY 14437 from 4 to 6 p.m. Online remembrances may be left at HindleFunderalHome.com. In lieu of owers, please make donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny omas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those services.Menandwomentrustedtomakethosedecisionsuponthedeath of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy.
Thank You
The family of Tom and Jacquie Canute, Brandon and Benny Canute, Miguel and Carlene (Canute) Negron, and Tom Canute Sr. would like to thank everyone who may have participated in the Celebration of Life for Theodore Canute who passed aay (Born January 26, 1963 - Died March 21, 2023.
Thank you to the Springwater Fire Department for the use of their hall and Linda Craun and Calvin Bower for the great job of preparing the food and to those who brought in food to the homes and fire hall.
Theo always wanted to get his 1969 Roadrunner up and running before he died. Tom Jr. took the challenge as soon as he knew Theo was terminally ill and went after his crew of friends to assist. Theo named his car the “Hulk” some time ago. Jacquie went and bought t-shirts for the team with “Team Hulk” on them. Supporting the refurbishment of the roadrunner was Greg Golding, Tom Canute Sr., Tom Jr., Matt Fredricks, Larry Kirkum, Brandon Canute, Benny Canute, Tim Haywood, Hunts Auto Parts & Tom Canute Sr. Tom Jr. would take Theo by the garage on trips back and forth from the doctors to let him see the progress.
The team TRIED EVER SO HARD TO MEET THEO’S WISHES, but missed their goal by one week. Theo passed a week before completion. Thanks guys and gals for all your efforts.
Jacquie spent many hours gathering pictures of Theo throughout his life and used them to choreograph an awesome viseo which was on display in the Fire Hall diring the celebration for all to enjoy.
Todd Forsythe did a great job in helping with arrangements. The Vincent House was one of Theo’s last requests; he wanted to be there for his final hours. He always supported the Vincent House, and they supported him right to the end. The Director and other people working there were all very kind, informative, and caring for Theo and the members of his family and friends.
Once again, THANK YOU EVERYONE. - The Canute Family

Kick Start Spring With A Finished Basement
An unfinished basement is a source of energy loss in many homes. By simply finishing the space with wall and floor coverings, you will notice a difference on your energy bills. A remodeled basement offers more than additional storage and living space. It can provide room for a growing family or a space where you can retreat for some privacy.
Insulation is a key component in making your basement look and feel comfortable, inviting and dry. For the best results, install a rigid board insulation against the concrete foundation before you stud the wall. The board is mechanically fastened or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, preventing thermal bridging through the studs, offering a higher R-value and better thermal performance.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE
Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.
NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* My dogs stay outside most of the day now, while the weather is so nice. We bring them indoors when it gets too hot, but for a treat, we will freeze a plastic cup of ice and then chuck the giant “ice block” on the porch. They lick at it and play with it. It’s like a little doggie waterpark when they are done. -- M.E. in Ohio

* Finding a summer camp for your kids can be a chore. Check with your child’s school and school friends for recommendations. Also, see if your city’s recreation department is holding any camps. Some county extension offices (agriculture department) offer camps. Many of these are reasonably priced. Check into them now.
* I have a tip for you. When pouring water in your coffee pot, use a 4-inch funnel by placing it in the tank. Helps not spill water. Pour slowly! -- P.T. in Illinois
* To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, put meat, vegetables, fruit and peelings in a bread bag, and put it in the freezer until you take it outside for the garbage collector. -- E.L. in Virginia
* Keep fast-food coupons in your car’s glove compartment. They will be there if you need to go to a drive-through, and will be handy for picking up dinner on the way home. If you need them at home, chances are your car is there anyway! -- F.D. in Alabama
* Got paper recycling? More and more schools are using paper recycling as a means to fundraise. Don’t have a kid in school? Drive by and look for a dumpster or bin that’s labeled. Odds are good you might find one. If you don’t, ask!
