William E. Schlueter
June 14, 2024
Springwater – William E. Schlueter, 85 years of age, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 14, 2024 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
Bill was born January 20,1939 in Rochester,NY,the son of William H. and Mary Alice (Beecher) Schlueter. He grew up in the “Nineteenth Ward”and graduated from Aquinas High School (1956). He went on to earn a degree in Political Science from St. John Fisher (1960).
Bill served his country in the United States Air Force, including two tours in Vietnam. He was with the 7th Air Force in Vietnam and he also served as a OSI Agent in Bonn, Germany as well as the US Embassy liason in Bonn, Germany. During his time in the Air Force, Bill was stationed in Germany, Virginia, Alabama, Nebraska, California, and North Carolina. Retiring as a Captain, Bill was very proud of his twenty years of service. He returned home to New York with his wife and children to settle down in a house in Springwater (1982),down the road from where he used to camp as a Boy Scout.Bill had always dreamed of having such a house in the country but never believed it would be a reality. He remained in wonder of that all the rest of his life.Subsequent to his military service,Bill was employed by the United States Postal Service until his retirement (2006).
While in the Air Force, Bill met Helen-Jean Shank on a blind date. ey wed on May 7, 1971 in Hong Kong while Bill was on R & R from Vietnam. ey celebrated over 45 years together prior to HelenJean passing away on February 26, 2017.
Bill had many hobbies that included canoeing, walks in the woods, photography, bird watching, and spending time at Canadice and Hemlock Lakes. Bill created and curated expressions and sayings that his family lovingly referred to as “Schlueterisms.” Few would expect a
man of such size to be so sentimental and to tear up when speaking of those he loved most, but Bill was a child at heart. He was silly and made up voices and character traits for animals (and people) he encountered. More than anything, Bill was a source of calmness, strength, and the simplest kind of love.
Bill was a life member of the Washington D.C. VFW and the UNA VOCE (an organization for the preservation of celebrating the pre-1962 Latin Mass within the Catholic Church). Bill was a man of deep faith and religious devotion. In his later years, he spent hours praying his rosary in times of trouble and suffering, as well as times of gratitude and celebration. He was dedicated to the Latin Mass Community of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha and attended mass with them as often as he was able.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, William H. and Mary Alice Schlueter; his beloved wife, Helen-Jean Schlueter; his twin sisters, Joan Wegman and Jean Coxe; and his brothers, omas C. Schlueter and James Schlueter. Bill’s “Tribe” lives on through his children: William R. Schlueter of VA, Rodney (Marsha) Schlueter of GA, Laura (Mike) Olienyk of PA, Heidi (Derek) Carlson of NY, Lisa (Gregg) Zielsdorf of PA, William “Matthew” (Rachael) Schlueter of NY, and Gretchen (John) Kendall of NY; 23 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.
Bill’s family and friends may call Friday, June 21, 2024 from 4-7pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 10:00AM at St. Rose’s Catholic Church, 1985 Lake Rd., Lima, NY. Committal prayers and interment will take place at Trout Run Cemetery,Trout Run, PA.
Contributions in memory of William E. Schlueter may be made to the Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Latin Mass Community, St. omas the Apostle Church, 4536 St. Paul Blvd., Rochester, NY 14617.

Lilies
The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

Protect Your Mobile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) Mobile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disconcerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012.
When a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to more than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity.
The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. While identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like going through trash and stealing wallets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

What time of year is best to prune everything? Are different times/seasons are best for different plants?
Whenitcomestopruning, thebesttimeof year varies depending on the specific plant and its growth habits. Different plants have different pruning requirements, and timing is crucial to ensure optimal health and growth. Here’s a generalguidelineforpruningdifferenttypesof plants throughout the year:
1. Deciduous Trees and Shrubs: Late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, is usually the best time to prune deciduous trees and shrubs. Pruning during this period allows for better visibility of the plant’s structure and promotes vigorous growth in the upcoming season. However, it is important to avoid

pruningduringfreezingtemperaturesorwhen the plant is actively flowering.
2. Evergreen Trees and Shrubs: Evergreen plants can be pruned throughout the year, but the best time is typically in early spring before new growth starts. This timing allows the plant to recover quickly and minimizes the risk of damage from extreme weather conditions. Light pruning can also be done in late summer to maintain shape and remove any dead or diseased branches.
3. Flowering Shrubs and Trees: The timing of pruning flowering shrubs and trees depends on whether they bloom on old wood or new wood. Plants that bloom on old wood, such as lilacs and azaleas, should be pruned immediately after they finish flowering. This ensures that you don’t remove the flower buds
for the next season. For plants that bloom on new wood, like hydrangeas, it’s best to prune them in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
4. Fruit Trees: Pruning fruit trees is usually done during late winter or early spring while the trees are still dormant. This timing allows for better control of the tree’s shape, improves fruit production, and reduces the risk of disease. It’s important to follow specific pruning techniques for each type of fruit tree to maximize yield and maintain overall tree health.
5. Perennials and Herbaceous Plants: Perennials and herbaceous plants can be pruned at various times throughout the year depending on their growth habit and flowering pattern. Generally, it is best to
prune these plants in early spring before new growth emerges or in late fall after they have finished flowering. Removing dead or spent flowers, known as deadheading, can also encourage prolonged blooming and tidy up the appearance of the plants.
Remember, these guidelines are general recommendations, and it’s always best to research the specific pruning requirements for eachplant in your landscape. By understanding the best time to prune different plants, you can promote healthy growth, enhance aesthetics, and ensure the overall vitality of your garden. Additionally, pruning is a tool to help promote health and well-being, not as a means to make a plant work in a location where it isn’t suited. “Right plant, rightplace”shouldalways beemployed.

Here’s A Tip
• To clean out your coffee grinder in order to use it for spices, add about a half-cup of white rice, then pulverize it. Repeat until scent is gone and rice powder comes out clean.
• It’s food-smart to separate utensils and cutting boards used for veggies, meats, poultry, etc. Here’s a handy chef’s trick: Color code. Paint a different color stripe down the edge of cutting boards and around the handle of utensils for each variety: green for veggies, yellow for poultry and red for beef.

Kyle Rollins: The High Jump to Olympic Dreams
BY SUZIE WELLS
Kyle Rollins, a 25-year-old high jumper from Groveland, NY, aims for this summer’s Paris Olympics. With an impressive record and a community rallying behind him, Kyle’s journey towards the Olympic Trials at the end of June is a testament to his dedication, talent, and the power of collective support.
Kyle’s athletic journey began at Geneseo Central School, where he excelled in soccer, basketball, and track and field. In 2017, he won the NYS championship in the pentathlon and was recognized as a High School All-American.
Kyle continued his academic and athletic career at St. John Fisher College. While pursuing a degree in Sustainability with a minor in Biology, he became the most decorated athlete in the college’s history. He is a 4x NCAA High Jump Champion and a 12x All-American, with numerous accolades including National Field Athlete of the Year and Conference Field Athlete of the Year. Since graduating in 2022, Kyle has been training independently and coaching at SUNY Geneseo.
On April 28, 2023, Kyle captured the attention of the track and field world at the Drake Relays by clearing 7’ 4.5”, the secondhighest mark in outdoor track in the US for that season, and the fi h-highest jump globally. Despite not having competed in this caliber track meet in several months, his achievement catapulted him into the spotlight, showcasing his potential to compete on the world’s biggest stage. is achievement allowed Kyle to connect with USA Olympic coaches and a specialist in Toronto, preparing for the Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR at the end of this month.
Over the past year, he has focused on perfecting jump mechanics, with an unwavering eye on his Olympic dream. His workouts have been rigorous and productive, training with Coach Louis at St. John Fisher, critiquing and honing even the smallest mechanic of the jump from start to finish. Team Rollins says, “We are so thankful [Coach Louis] is able to continue working with Kyle on his journey.”
four siblings’ sporting events over the past few years. Kyle’s competitionsalonehaveledtheRollins’toNewMexico,Oregon, NYC, the Bahamas, and many places in between.
At the NYC Grand Prix on June 9, 2024, his 5th place jumps bumped his rank up, and made his chances at an Olympic debut glimmer even more. Next week are the Olympic Trials. He is set to compete in the qualifying round on June 27, with the top 12 advancing to the finals on June 30. With top US jumpers already setting high marks, the competition will be fierce, but Kyle is ready to rise to the occasion.
Team Rollins expresses deep gratitude for the overwhelming support of the community that has been a “crucial vote of confidence in Kyle’s abilities.” While most competitors at this level are sponsored by major corporations and brands or compete for a college that funds the pursuits, Kyle funds his own pursuit, with the generous support of the community through a GoFundMe page to help with travel expenses, equipment costs, training fees, and competition fees.
Rollins says, “Competing as an elite athlete takes more than athleticism alone. e elite high jumper dedicates hours in training and practice, fine-tuning jump approach, take-off, bar clearance and landing. And that’s just the jump! e mental game is another key aspect in competing at this level. Being able to block out distractors and other stressors in competition” is a crucial component as well.
“ is has been an exciting journey,” say his mom and dad, Liz and Tracy. ey laugh over the fact that their 2017 Tahoe has well over 200,000 miles on it from travels to Kyle’s and his
Kyle’s journey to the Olympic Trials is a story of talent, hard work, and community spirit. As he aims to soar higher, the community’s support will undoubtedly play a crucial role in helping him achieve his Paris Olympic dreams. Team Rollins sends heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported him on this journey! Fingers crossed he makes it to Paris!

FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK
Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading.

Can Sciatica Be Relieved Through Steriod Shots?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am wondering what the best treatment is for sciatic pain. Would a steroid shot help? The pain is behind my knee, down the outside of my leg, and now on my foot. -- J.F.
GIFTS FOR RECENT GRADUATES
Money: Money remains a one-size-fits-all gift that can be put to many uses. Invest in a graduate’s future by buying stock in a stable company, contribute to a college savings account or help grads begin paying back their student loans.
Puzzle Answers This Week
ANSWER: “Sciatica” is a general term for a process that compresses the nerve roots, which causes symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, and a loss of reflexes. The sciatic nerve supplies much of the innervation to the leg. The area that you describe is most likely the first sacral nerve (S1), and pain here is most frequently caused by disc herniation at the L5-S1 space. This can cause acute symptoms that are often quite severe.
Initial treatment is usually conservative, consisting of anti-inflammatories and avoiding activities that worsen pain. While bed rest was sometimes prescribed, it is seldom necessary for more than a day or two, and many people actually feel better when they are up and about. After a week, most people are able to do light activity, and I tell my patients neither to push themselves to do more than they can, nor force themselves to rest if they feel OK with light activity.
Steroids have certainly been used in this situation, and they are injected into the epidural space by an expert who uses imaging. Although there is a slight improvement in pain around three months among those who are treated with epidural steroids, there was no longer a benefit found around six months. This means that you get better only a little faster than normal at the cost of a small risk from the injection. If a person isn’t recovering well within a few weeks, I often refer them to physical therapy. If they aren’t getting benefit at all (or they are getting worse), then it is time to find out what the cause is with an MRI and a referral to an expert.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
Senior cat’s arthritis is impacting his quality of life.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Sticky” is 14 years old and still in great shape. He loves chasing a er a laser beam and rolling around with his toys. However, I’ve noticed that when he comes over to leap up on my lap, he hesitates and just puts his paws on my leg and meows. I have to encourage him to leap, and he doesn’t seem happy about it. Could something be wrong with him? -- Janine in Gulfport, Mississippi
DEAR JANINE: At age 14, Sticky is definitely a senior cat, and it sounds like he’s beginning to develop a common senior cat problem: arthritis. Just like us, cats can suffer from stiff, achy joints as they get older.
You’re doing a great job of observing his behavior and spotting changes in the way he interacts. Arthritis (typically osteoarthritis, sometimes abbreviated as OA) is progressive, and sometimes not noticeable right away. ere are four key things to watch for:
Running -- Does your cat run with a fast, fluid motion, or in stops and starts?
Jumping -- Does your cat hesitate to take jumps that were effortless in the past?
Climbing -- Does your cat walk or run confidently on the stairs, or hesitate on each step?
Playing -- Does your cat keep up with the laser pointer, or start to lag behind?
Other noticeable behaviors, like excessive meowing, hiding away or even occasionally missing the litter box also signal that your cat is uncomfortable or in pain.
It’s important to consult with Sticky’s veterinarian at this point. Together, you can evaluate his pain level and function, and discuss options for improving his comfort. ere are treatments for cats with OA that will greatly improve his quality of life and get him back to his old self.

Noise Ordinances
I’m a 94 year male who uses a cane to get around. Do a lot shopping at Caledonia Market. Just want to thank the kind lady who help me load my car in the rain. Thank you
Thank You
We were at [restaurant] in Avon this morning. When we were getting ready to leave and pay our bill, the waitress told us the young man seated at the table nearby paid our bill. We are an older couple and thought it was a wonderful gesture for this young man to do. You have no idea what that meant to us. We just came back from an appointment and we normally sit in the same spot, and it was such a nice thing for the young man to do. Thank you, and God bless!
To the person complaining about others mowing between 7am and 9pm, claiming it is unreasonable to mow during those times, most towns and cities have noise ordinances that allow those kinds of activities from those hours. When you factor in some blocks have 30+ houses that all need mowing, of course you’re going to hear mowing all of the time. It's a part of what summer is! Most towns also have a law about the height of grass, so mowing is necessary, and also helps keep the growing tick population at bay. So I'm sorry that people are following their local regulations.
Terrible Roads
Good Guy
Shout out to Ben Burgess who was nice enough to put my spare tire on when I got a flat in Shortsville, NY. I am not from the area so I did not know anyone personally I could call and although I tried calling several service stations in the area they were all busy and I was stuck. Ben was definitely a lifesaver as I had a couple of appointments in Irondequoit that afternoon that I had to keep and thanks to Ben I made them both.
They put in water lines throughout [local town]. They then "fixed" the huge crevices they made in the roads but didn't even make sure they were even with the existing road. There is one spot that is so bad that they have to keep filling it with gravel to make it easier to cross in your vehicle. Why not just fix them properly?! If you're going to mess the roads up for a project you should be held accountable to fix them properly when you're done.
