GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace bulbs two at a time? In an effort to promote the importance of changing headlight bulbs two at a time, Philips developed the “Change In Pairs” safety campaign, which aims to educate motorists about the dangers of dimming lights while promoting the many reasons that changing bulbs in pairs makes the road safer for all travelers. To support this safety initiative, Philips also packages its Upgrade Headlight Bulbs in pairs. Though replacing two headlight bulbs when only one is dimming may seem unwarranted, maintaining a consistent light output in both headlights makes the road safer for drivers, their passengers and oncoming motorists. When only one bulb is replaced, the resulting light output can be both unbalanced and unpredictable, providing inadequate lighting that can compromise driver visibility. In addition, oncoming motorists may experience difficulty seeing vehicles with just one headlight operating at full capacity, and some may even mistake oncoming cars and trucks for motorcycles, creating positioning issues for drivers on both sides of the yellow line.

Adopting a Shelter Dog

Monday-Saturday 16 Bunnell Lane Dansville, NY

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana

585-335-9380

Penny Saver

DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply. There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies.

Hi, my name is

Maddie. I am a 41/2 month old Saint Bernard. I am a constantly growing, lovable teddy bear. My world is a chew toy, and I like cheddar cheese balls for my snack. I love to play in the snow and go for rides in the truck.

Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)? Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Thank you! Recently, Berkeley Brean (Channel 10 Investigative Reporter) drew attention to the lack of Monroe County medical transport for people who need to be moved by stretcher from home to medical appointments. Thanks to Berkeley’s news segment and Rochester Medical Transport’s efforts on our behalf, we were able to get my husband from our home in Henrietta to an essential appointment at the Spine Center on Ridgeway Avenue. Please know that this retired military man and his family thank you from the bottom of their hearts! - Jim R., his wife Sandy, & daughter Tonya Returned Wallet Thank you so much to the person who returned my wallet to ESL in Brockport. You have renewed my faith in humanity. Elementary School Art Show Our granddaughter invited us to attend the Avon Elementary School Art Show on Wednesday, June 15th. What a show! The students, from all grades, exhibited their fantastic works of art produced under the guidance of their art teacher, Nicole Rowley. While viewing the art, the Avon High School Senior Jazz Band, directed by Charlotte Collins, played jazz tunes for all to enjoy. What an awesome, talented group of musicians! We totally enjoyed our entire time there and would especially like to thank Mr. Rob Lupisella (retiring Elementary School Principal - we will miss him!) for making the event possible. Thank you, also, to all the school staff and students for an amazing experience.

A Response I hope I am not the only one disturbed by a rant titled “Stupid Idea.” This is an irresponsible and reckless [rant]…and is truly hate speech. Wishing ill upon others, whether or not they agree with your beliefs, is morally wrong. Additionally, the author of this rant has no idea if any of the Texas victims or their families were for or against gun control…again, totally irresponsible. As disturbing as this rant is, I find it unacceptable that it was printed at all. Free speech is one thing; hate speech is completely unacceptable. Please vet these comments more carefully. Thank you. Dear readers - we agree. This one got by us and we apologize for printing the rant as submitted. Thank you. ~ The GVPS Management Team Expiration Dates A word to my fellow shoppers and stores. Lately, it has become common that food on the shelves is not properly rotated anymore. Check the expiration dates more carefully. None of us have money to waste. Stores are having a hard time hiring and training, and unfortunately that leads to this problem that we are all too busy to notice. Face Traffic I live on [local road] in [local town]. We’re across from a school. There are kids around the corner from us who walk home with their backs to traffic. I can’t tell you how many people we see doing that along this busy road! Most are listening to their phones and cannot hear traffic behind them, are texting on their phones, or are walking two or three abreast with one of them walking on the side line with no idea what is coming up behind them. Adults should know better, but they don’t! I am begging parents to talk to their children about walking facing traffic so that they see what is coming at them. This could save their lives!

Robert B. Wegman Lodge at Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp Renovated Through Wegman Family Charitable Foundation Grant BY T I M ampers at the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp will benefit from a newly renovated Robert B. Wegman Lodge and from a spruced-up camp, thanks to a generous grant from The Wegman Family Charitable Foundation and the volunteer work of Wegmans employees. The Wegman Family Charitable Foundation granted $225,000 to renovate the Wegman Lodge, the camp’s gateway where campers are welcomed each summer. Renovations, which will directly benefit children with paralysis and other physical challenges who attend the camp, included: • Improved acoustics through new ceiling baffles that minimize loud sounds that can be challenging for children who have autism • A vinyl plank floor to improve safety through increased slip resistance • Installation of an energy recovery ventilator, in-system UV lights and air conditioning to help campers with sensory issues by providing a cool place to eat meals • A new accessible stage ramp and refinished flooring • Kitchen improvements for safety and efficiency • A new picnic pavilion for increased dining space As part of Wegmans’ participation in United Way’s Day of Caring, Wegmans employees volunteered their time from May 16 to May 19, 2022, to help clean up the camp and get it ready for the summer. Nearly 150 employees participated in the multiple “Days of Caring” at the camp. Rochester Rotary, Wegmans President and CEO Colleen Wegman and Wegmans employees held a lodge re-dedication celebration on May 18, 2022. “We are extremely “My Grandfather always grateful to the Wegman family had a special place in his for this generous grant and heart for the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp and for Wegmans employees who the amazing experiences devoted their volunteer time they create for children with disabilities,” said Colleen to our camp.” Wegman, president and Tracey Dreisbach CEO of Wegmans Food Markets. “It’s been so incredible to see our employees come together to support the camp and its campers over the years, and it was particularly special for all of us to give back to this remarkable organization in celebration of their 100 years serving our community.” Rochester Rotary Executive Director Tracey Dreisbach said, “Wegmans has a long history of supporting Sunshine Camp, from the Wegmans LPGA golf tournament to employee volunteer workdays. We are extremely grateful to the Wegman family for this generous grant and for Wegmans employees who devoted their volunteer time to our camp. Both these efforts will directly benefit the 2,500 campers with disabilities who attend our camping program each summer.” 2022 marks the centennial year of Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp, a fully accessible residential summer camp that serves children with disabilities and their families. Originally located on 23 acres of land near Durand-Eastman Park when it opened on June 12, 1922, the camp relocated to its current 157-acre site in Rush in 1974. Sunshine Camp provides a unique camping experience that area children cannot get anywhere else, including a fully accessible tree house, a sensory center (Gizzi Family Sensory Center), a fully accessible playground (Shirley’s Playland), a climbing wall, zip line, splash pad, archery, boating, fishing, miniature golf, swimming, and arts and crafts.

Rochester Rotary offers a two-week program at the camp to children with disabilities at no charge, through generous contributions from Rochester Rotarians and from the community. During the rest of the summer, the camp is enjoyed by campers from partner agencies, including American Diabetes Association, Camp Haccamo (supported by Rotary Clubs of Monroe County), Camp Joy, Cancer Support Community Rochester, EPI (Empowering People’s Independence) and Heritage Christian Services. About Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp (sunshinecamp.org), a fully accessible residential summer camp in Rush, NY, has met the needs of children with paralysis and other physical challenges and their families since 1922. Each summer, children and young-adult campers (ages 7 to 21 years old) with disabilities take advantage of this 157-acre campground. 191 Main St., Dansville, NY 14437 • 585-335-6170 DID YOU KNOW? When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

* Keep your crisper drawer clean by lining with fresh newspaper. It will absorb smells and liquid, and can be easily replaced. * If it’s garage sale time, try this trick: Wrap a picture frame tightly with tulle. Then you can hang earrings from the tulle. Maybe someone will think it’s so cute that you’ll sell the frame, too! * When your cut-up fruit is about to expire and you don’t think you’ll be able to eat it in time, just freeze it for smoothies. Lay it out in a single layer and pop it in the freezer. When it’s frozen, you can put it in a zipper-top baggie for easy storage. * “Do you have a lot of coffee mugs? Maybe it’s time to show them off! My granny has so many coffee mugs from trips and that she got as gifts. My daddy put up five long shelves on one wall of her kitchen. They are the perfect place to line up and display all the mugs, and each one has a story, which is fun to hear.” -- F.E. in North Carolina * “I have three girls and one bathroom, so there’s no way anyone gets ‘ready’ in front of the bathroom mirror. Instead, all the girls have a hanging shoe rack on the back of their door for makeup and hair supplies, and a mirror on the wall.” -- P.W. in Oregon * Stubborn stains in the toilet? Try dropping in a few denture tablets before going to bed, then scrub and flush in the morning

mammogram in July, but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed specifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer followup are not an adequate substitute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around. ***

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Sigurd the Mighty, a ninth-century Norse earl of Orkney, was killed by an enemy he had beheaded several hours earlier. He’d tied the man’s head to his horse’s saddle, but while riding home one of its protruding teeth grazed his leg, causing an infection from which the unlucky Sigurd died.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators. DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Here’s How I Saved on Prescription Drugs

The price of prescription drugs has, like everything else, inched up. In some cases, the cost has made a massive, sudden jump, and it comes as a shock when you check out at the pharmacy. But there are ways around this horrible surprise. I recently discovered a way to save a lot of money ($80 on a 90-day prescription) by doing two things: I changed pharmacies, and I started using GoodRx. Here’s how: Go to the GoodRx website (goodrx.com) and put in your ZIP code so that all the local pharmacies show up. Enter the name of the drug you take, as well as the dose and number of pills. See what each pharmacy charges using GoodRx. They will vary widely. Boy, did I get a shock. It took me all of two minutes to call a new pharmacy and ask them to have the prescription transferred. Then I printed out the GoodRx coupon showing the pharmacy name, the drug and dose, the price and so on. I took that to the pharmacy and voila! Eighty dollars saved. Here are a few other ideas if GoodRx isn’t going to work for you: -- Ask your doctor if a generic would be just as good, or if another drug would work just as well. -- Find out if you qualify for the Extra Help program to pay for your drugs by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or read the information at www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10508.pdf. -- See if you qualify for the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program. (www. medicare.gov/plan-compare/#/pharmaceutical-assistance-program) -- Get a different Medicare drug plan more in line with the drugs you take (www.medicare.gov/plan-compare). One note: You can’t use GoodRx along with a deductible from Medicare or Medicaid, but you can use it instead of those. Beware whether you’ll reach your annual deductible if you don’t use a Medicare drug plan or if you’re in the doughnut hole (cover gap) already. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Fourth of July Fireworks Can Traumatize Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Please remind your readers that the noise and flash of fireworks can traumatize pets! Last year, my son and his partner took their dog “Bliss” to a Fourth of July festival. Someone set off a string of firecrackers a few feet from the booth they were visiting. Bliss bolted and pulled her leash out of my son’s hand. She ran straight out into the road. Luckily, the cars all stopped, and one of the drivers caught her. Afterward she remained very anxious. Bliss now takes medication to stay calm, and it’s difficult to take her to unfamiliar places. Please urge people not to set off fireworks; go to a professional display and leave the pets at home. -- Judith in Lake City, Florida

Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

DEAR JUDITH: You told them, and I thank you! I’m very sorry to hear that Bliss was traumatized, and I hope your son is able, through medication and training, to improve her confidence. Bliss’ parents didn’t do anything wrong in taking her to the festival, but their experience shows how others’ irresponsibility can have consequences for pets, and that owners have to be alert and ready to handle potential problems. The Fourth of July can be a trying day for pets. Crowded parties and loud fireworks can really stress them out. Large fireworks displays are no different than big thunderstorms to most pets, and should be treated as such. If fireworks will be within earshot of your home this holiday, prepare a safe area for your pet to shelter where the noise will not bother it as badly. If a ThunderShirt works for your dog (or cat), use it. Don’t bring pets to fireworks displays, and if you’re setting off backyard fireworks, put your pets inside. Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GENERAL CONTRACTING

FAST-GROWING VEGETABLES Growing vegetables at home offers many benefits. In addition to providing a worthwhile hobby that can increase your physical activity, having control over your own produce can reduce exposure to a number of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. This translates into foods that are healthier for the body and the environment. Gardens also can help the average person save money on often costly produce, all the while reducing gardeners’ carbon footprints. Waiting to reap the rewards of a harvest can try the patience of those accustomed to satisfying their needs on a moment’s notice. This is especially true for young gardeners who have grown up in a society that increasingly provides immediate gratification. While tomatoes, peppers and watermelons require long growing seasons, many other fruits and vegetables grow much faster. This offers plenty of bounty in a short time for those who may have gotten a later start on their gardens or simply don’t have the patience to wait on the more time-consuming growers. Speak with a garden center expert to learn more about which vegetables, fruits and herbs grow quickly and will thrive in your home garden.

PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS Not all bees build the wax or paper structures associated with traditional beehives. Those hives may not be readily visible even for bees that do build them. Wood-nesting bees can nest in twigs or dead trees. Bees may nest underground or use the burrows abandoned by small rodents. Before excavating or disturbing more remote areas of the yard, check to see if it is a habitat for bees. Leave some natural areas of the landscape untouched and do not remove twigs, mounds of dirt and native flowers to attract more bees. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.

siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to

anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

Change is the law of life. And those w ho look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. - John F. Kennedy

Samantha L. “Sam” Briggs June 16, 2022 Dansville - Samantha L. Briggs, “Sam” - 52 years of age, passed away Friday morning June 16, 2022 at the Vincent House in Wayland. Sam fought a courageous battle with brain cancer with her son Justin by her side. She had the will and heart to keep fighting but her disease won out. Sam was born May 10, 1970 in Canaseraga, the daughter of Patrick and Pamela (Blaney) Briggs. She grew up in Canaseraga and resided in the Dansville area most of her life. She was a graduate of Canaseraga High School. Her employment spanned a few different areas; Kraft Foods, assisting at a family run Alpaca Farm; and for over a decade she worked for UPS out of the Arkport office. Sam’s hobbies were many! She enjoyed kayaking; listening to live music (local bands); and she especially loved animals. The “animal whisperer” would help any animal at any time, often donating to the local humane societies. Sam was loved by her UPS customers and in turn was very loyal to them. Most recently, Diamond Dotz were her go to as they were very therapeutic. However, it was her three boys that she loved most and was very proud of them. She was a “spitfire” with heart and would do anything for anyone! Sam was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Pamela Briggs; and her grandparents who raised her, Bruce and Delores Osborne. She is survived by her three sons, Justin Briggs of Arkport and her twins, Michael and Jacob Briggs of TN; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins; and many close special friends that were always there for her until the end. Sam’s family and friends are planning a celebration of life that will be announced at a later date. WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
