NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

Body & Mind ____________________13

* To halve a lot of cherry tomatoes, try sandwiching them between two plastic lids. Press down lightly and slice through the opening to make short work of them.

* “To remove paint or stain from hands (even oil-based), use an old dry washcloth with liquid hand soap -- no water. After the paint is loose, rinse with warm water.” -- H.P. in Washington

Garage Sales ____________________17 Give & Take ____________________16

* Quinoa is becoming really popular as a grain alternative. It’s very small and requires rinsing before cooking to remove potentially bitter residue. Here’s a great trick to rinse your quinoa without losing half of it to the holes in your colander: Use a French press coffeemaker. The fine mesh and pouring spout make rinsing a breeze. -- JoAnn

* “Candle nubs, that little bit left when the candle has burned down all the way, can be removed from a candleholder by setting the whole thing in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. The wax surface hardens and shrinks, making it easier to chip out. The same goes for linens that have wax drips: freeze and chip away, then use a degreasing spot cleaner.” -- Y.G. in Arkansas

* Fun get-together project for kids: Have everyone doodle on a large posterboard. At the end of the night, trace a puzzle pattern and cut it up, making a large floor puzzle. You can bring it out at the next play date. The smaller the children, the larger the pieces! -- A.L. in Florida

Vibes & Rants ____________________32

* Easily thread a needle with hairspray. Spritz the end of the thread with a little high-hold hairspray and pull taut. It will be much easier to thread. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

585-335-9380 RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE IN DOGS Is heat stroke immediately evident? Heat stroke can overwhelm dogs quickly, so dog owners should be especially diligent and watch their dogs closely when they are spending time outside on hot days. Dogs may first suffer from mild heat-related stress or moderate exhaustion before they begin experiencing the more severe symptoms of heat stroke, so dog owners should look for signs of stress or fatigue and bring their dogs inside immediately after noticing such symptoms. The consequences of heat stroke are severe, so dog owners should always err on the side of caution.

HOW TO MAINTAIN A CAR THAT’S RARELY DRIVEN Our 9 editions are published weekly with a total circulation of over 147,000 Office:

• Adhere to recommended maintenance schedules. Even if a car has barely hit the road in recent months, its fluids, such as oil, are still aging and still need to be replaced.

335-3167 7653 Parker Hill Rd., Dansville, NY caldwellscustomconcrete@gmail.com

• Turn the car on every so often. Turning the car on, even if you only intend to let it sit idle in the driveway, keeps the vehicle components lubricated by allowing fluids to cycle their way through the engine. Turning the car on also ensures the battery stays fresh and doesn’t die. • Disconnect the battery if necessary. Drivers who own two vehicles or families who have only been using the family car in recent months can disconnect the batteries from their unused vehicles to prevent corrosion. Corrosion decreases battery life and performance. • Take the car for a spin. Of course, driving a vehicle every so often is a great way to keep it running strong.

VISION GREATLY AFFECTS DRIVING ABILITY Driving is a multisensory experience that requires careful coordination and mastery of a wide array of skills. Understanding the rules of the road and having sufficient practice are only part of the equation. Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys. Acceptable vision is involved in all components of driving. Motor vehicle operators need to have clear vision to read gauges and operate the controls of the car. Distance vision also is essential to identifying road hazards and seeing other cars on the road. The health resource All About Vision says aging and visual changes at any age can affect a person’s ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Many motor vehicle agency vision tests do not take into consideration all of the factors that can impact vision while driving. Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road.

Independence Day Reflections BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

he 4th of July is a favorite holiday for many—including me! And there are few better places to celebrate July 4th than in the Finger Lakes. Fireworks, rings of fire (wherever there’s a lake!), carnivals, field days, and similar celebrations abound. Perhaps most importantly, families gather together to eat and enjoy each other’s company. This is perhaps the first truly post-pandemic year families will join together for Independence Day. As families gather, sadly, several faces may be missing. Yet, their memories will always be cherished and honored. The pleasure of once again gathering together will no longer be taken for granted as we take this opportunity to hold our loved ones close. This is also the first year several events have returned after the pandemic heights of 2020. The Covid pandemic generated more conversation around the concept—and the practical application—of freedom than there has been in some time. The tension surrounding questions of freedom made for many disagreements; resolutions for many of these questions have yet to be reached. While these decisions continue to develop, it may be a good time to reflect on what we do NOT have, rather than disagreements over what we do have. We do not, for example, have a fear of becoming civilian casualties of a war raging on American soil. The tragic conflict in Ukraine has given sharp contrast to the relative peace and security enjoyed in the United States. Surely, the value of freedom from such local devastation cannot be overstated. We also do not have restrictions on what we can learn and believe. In the United States, it is not illegal to peacefully hold and declare one’s own political, religious, moral, and

otherwise ideological persuasions. Peacefully, we are able to educate ourselves and our children as we see fit, worship if and how we see fit, and pursue any career we choose. Whether rented or owned, we, as United States citizens, do not have the fear of legally being driven out of our own homes, having our property confiscated, or having our family members harmed or stolen away. While conversations continue regarding potential changes to existing immigration legislation, it is important to recognize the guarantees of relative safety which make United States citizenship so desirable. Finally and crucially, we are free from the fear of having our families forced apart. Even the briefest glance through history, and into some countries around the world today, shows that this has not always been—and is not always—the case. Families have been divided by slavery, war, forced labor, conscription, genocide, and more. The United States hasn’t always been free of these things, but today, legally as United States citizens, we have a reasonable expectation that our families will remain together as long as we wish. For these reasons and so many more, the United States of America—with all her faults—is still something to celebrate. Our country may not be perfect, but we the people continue to have the power and freedom to improve it. That’s something to be grateful for this 4th of July—and to remember every time we have the opportunity to vote—both locally and nationally. So, happy 246th birthday, United States of America, and thank you.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

How do I get rid of spiny sow thistle and Canada thistle? Spiny sowthistle is a winter annual that is actually in the sunflower family and not a true thistle. Spiny sowthistle spreads by seed. It flowers from late spring through the summer, depending on the location. The flower is yellow, resembling a dandelion, but forms in a corymbiform cluster. The root of spiny sowthistle is a taproot. It is found in waste areas and other open areas such as roadsides and thin turf. It can be controlled by mowing which prevents the stem and flowers from forming and eliminates seed formation. The plant can also be cut out. A postemergent herbicide application is effective when spiny sowthistle is young and actively growing but

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County should not be needed if the location will be mowed. For best results, treat prior to bolting. Canada Thistle is a rhizomatous perennial. Since Canada thistle has a deep root system, the only mechanical approach for controlling this weed is to exhaust the storage roots (exhaust perennial roots). Food reserves in the roots reach a minimum in June and then increase as food flows from the shoots to the storage roots. Consequently, shoots should be removed for the first time by early June. Mowing or repeated cutting may be used to help prevent the production of seeds and starving the plant. Persistent removal of the shoots be-

fore they attain several leaves will exhaust the storage roots within two years and eliminate the weed. One study found a 21 day weeding schedule was optimal. Postemergent applications of a systemic herbicide may be used. Fall is typically the best time for these treatments when the plant is translocating food reserves to the rooting structures. Other good times are during the early bolting stage when plants

are 6-10” tall and during the bud to flowering stage. Some of the common lawn weed control materials are effective. Spot treatments are good for limited stands. Glyphosate products labeled for the use are effective. Lawns should be properly maintained to promote a healthy, dense turf that with managed mowing will compete well with weeds.

False Positives Plague Lung Cancer Screening

585-335-7902

Make an Impression is your website...

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 74-year-old female who

o old and outdated?

smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small; 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans and sometimes an invasive procedure to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means your risk that this nodule is cancer is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancer is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You should also have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is current smokers who consider screening. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker, and quitting remains the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus.

Genesee Valley Penny Saver reserves the right to approve/reject events for publication. Events are published as space allows. Event deadline is Monday, 2 weeks prior to publication date

The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Irish author and politician Edmund Burke was not a skilled public speaker. In fact, his speeches at the House of Commons were so boring, many MPs left the building once he stood up.

WORDS WITH ACHES AND PAINS

* While Jackie Robinson was laid up for two weeks in 1948 with a hamstring injury, the Dodgers secretly replaced him with Herschel Morowitz, a white man in black face. * Drinking seawater will cause rapid dehydration and, if enough is consumed, eventually death. Frozen seawater is a much safer alternative, since it contains only a tenth as much salt as the liquid form, due to the fact that the salt is separated from the water when freezing as it does not fit into the crystalline structure of ice.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Revisiting Seniors-Only Grocery Shopping If you’ve been depending on grocery delivery or curbside pickup for the past two years, you might not know this: Many stores are continuing to have seniors-only hours. I’d tried going to seniors-only hours once two years ago ... but only once. The whole virus/pandemic was so new to us that we assumed that we must shop and stock up for all eventualities, leading to widespread shortages. The crowds that day were so massive that the line went across the front of the store, down the side and to the back. Store personnel were stationed at the door with counters in their hands, only allowing in a set number of shoppers. When I saw a friend coming out, I asked: “What’s it like in there?” The answer: “It’s a nightmare. People are grabbing 10 of everything. Do not go in.” And I didn’t. Recent queries among friends who use seniors-only hours indicate that things are much, much better now in terms of crowds. We know that many items are chronically out of stock. We acknowledge that COVID is still around, and we wear masks. We don’t expect much in the way of variety in our diets unless we luck onto a full shelf of food. Many of us, however, haven’t been to a seniors-only hour for a very long time, if ever. We depend on delivery and curbside pickup. If you’re ready to try seniors-only shopping, call your local grocery and retail stores. While fewer stores are now offering it, some still do. It might be every day before the regular opening, or it might be one or two very early days per week. Take your hand sanitizer and wipe down the cart handles. Wear a mask. The bonus, I’m told, is that’s when fresh vegetables and fruit are put out, and the overnight stock clerks have loaded the shelves. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

585-967-7919 HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Do not set air conditioner thermostats at lower than normal temperatures when turning them on. The DOE notes that setting thermostats at lower than normal temperatures when turning air conditioners on will not cool homes any faster than setting them at typical temperatures. Such a strategy will only lead to excessive energy consumption and higher energy bills.

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Realize energy savings with one simple step A simple project that will help keep your home cool this summer is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay batts on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

St. George - Forsythe Funeral Home and Monuments

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

Dansville: Mary E. Fenti, age 100, passed away peacefully late Saturday afternoon, June 25, 2022, at the Wyoming County Community Skilled Nursing Home in Warsaw, where she had been a resident for a short time.

She loved gardening, especially cultivating daylilies, and being with her dogs, Coleman, Lily, and Jackson. There will be a private family service to honor her life. Memorial donations can be made to The American Cancer Society in honor of Kathy Porter. She will be truly missed by her family & many friends. Mary was born in Avoca, NY, on March 14, 1922, a daughter to George and Goldie (Brown) Barnes. Mary graduated from Hornell High School in 1940 and married her high school sweetheart, Raymond A. Fenti, on September 21, 1940. They had four children, Raymond F. Fenti, Theresa M. Smith, Susan R. Trepanier, and Nancy E. Fenti, while living in Canaseraga before moving to Dansville in 1961. Mary was a member of the Dansville United Methodist Church where she was also active with the Senior Nutrition Program. She was a former bookkeeper at NAPA Auto Parts in Dansville for many years and then volunteered for 21 years as “Grandma Mary” in the Foster Grandparent Program, working with students and teachers in the Dansville Primary School before retiring in 2015. Mary was a caring mother who loved her family and home. She loved her home away from home as “Grandma Mary” with 21 years of students as well as working with multiple teachers. S E V RA Heroic Storm Cleanup Efforts Many thanks to the Geneseo Department of Public Works for their great work after the June 16th microburst. The storm hit at the end of the workday. Nevertheless, they stayed on the job until 1 a.m. Friday and were back at work at 6 a.m. We appreciate the hard work they do throughout the year, and they are doing a terrific job clearing up this devastation. Thanks also to the other villages’ crews who are helping.

Thank you, Matt at Strong ER Being stuck in a waiting room for hours is no fun for anyone. But then I watched waiting room ambassador Matt. He loves his job, and it shows. It’s refreshing and reassuring. He made my otherwise boring, horrible experience into a glimmer of hope. Thank you, Matt. I appreciate you, and I pray your employer recognizes the gem you truly are.

Gypsy Moth Control I’d like to address the property owners who have been having their forested areas sprayed (presumably for gypsy moths). Please be aware that, while the gypsy moth is an introduced and invasive species, this spray does not discriminate when it comes to killing all types of caterpillar larvae, including those of native butterflies and moths. These caterpillars are a vital food source to migrating as well as breeding populations of birds. Adult birds feed heavily on all types of caterpillars, and they are an important food source for nestlings as well. Although the gypsy moth larvae do defoliate trees, most deciduous trees can withstand several defoliations and still recover, as evidenced by the lush foliage this spring after defoliations last year. Gypsy moth populations go in cycles, and we are on the downward trend of this latest outbreak. So please think twice before treating your property and negatively impacting our native birds, butterflies and moths. Reviews Is this the new trend? More and more reviews are requested after purchases, quality, services, etc. When you give an honest review, you get contacted back with a not-sofriendly response: “You’re wrong, that didn’t happen, you expect too much,” etc. To practically demand all reviews be 5 star with no criticism, even though it could be good criticism, only makes their integrity worse! To deny or discourage critiques is nothing short of a disservice to your customers. Backing Out I hear you when you say you were backing out of a space at a grocery store and people just continue to walk right behind you without even looking side to side. It happens to me all the time. I question people about that and ask them why they do that and they say, “Well, I have the right away.” But why don’t they look? And as far as it being your fault, it probably will be because you’re backing out and because people have the right of way. They know this. Again, I have been in motion, and people walk quickly right behind me without looking or stopping.

Thank you, Twisters & McDonalds! A huge shout out to Twisters of Livonia and to McDonalds in Lakeville for their continued sponsorship of the Livingston County Baseball/ Softball Camp. Each year, they donate ice cream to all the camp kids! Jeff at Twisters is awesome to work with, and Jessie at McDonalds is amazing, too! Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

THE GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR

FINDING WORK AFTER 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
