Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Gardening is widely considered as relaxing a hobby as it is rewarding. Although gardening when temperatures are mild, such as in spring and fall, can be relaxing, gardening can be much more physically taxing and even dangerous when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer. Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer. HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Rubbing alcohol can be used to remove ballpoint-pen ink from most upholstery. * “Polish wall tiles in the bathroom using car wax. They will repel water really well. Just be sure that you cover the floor before you apply any wax. You do not want to polish your tub, as that is a safety hazard for sure!” -- M.W. in Missouri

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the 1880s, businessman LaMarcus Thompson was so upset over the temptations presented by saloons and brothels that he decided to clean up what he viewed as one of America’s most immoral places—New York’s Coney Island. To that end he built the country’s first roller coaster in a bid to give folks some good, clean fun well away from sleazier pursuits.

* If you have wood floors, you might already know about felt furniture pads -- the little self-stick felt circles you put on furniture legs to reduce scratches on your floors. You might not know that these same pads can reduce scuff marks that appliances make on countertops. It also makes it easier to scoot around a heavy mixer or other appliances. * “Check your mower to see if you’re cutting your lawn to the optimum height. Generally, cutting grass to 2 1/2 inches will allow it to retain more moisture, requiring less watering, and help shade out weeds, too.” -- O.F. in Alabama * Here’s a workout tip: Rotate among a few pairs of running shoes to get the best life out of them. Rotating gives them a chance to dry out between wearings, and runners who practice this routine have a 39% lower chance of injury, according to a Luxembourg research firm. * “If you’re looking to save money, don’t ignore the dollar store. You can find a lot of personal-care and home-care items there for, well, a dollar. I save quite a bit of money this way.” -- R.L. in Texas

has suffered from acid reflux for many years and has been taking Prilosec (omeprazole) for at least 15 years. I have heard that it is not meant for longtime use. If I don’t take it, I have such heartburn I can’t sleep and am in misery all day and night. I recently attended a seminar on the new LINX surgery and hope to have it done. Do you have any information on the success of or problems after this surgery? -- J.B. ANSWER: The LINX device is a magnetic ring, placed by laparoscopic surgery, that helps increase the strength of the lower esophageal sphincter, the valvelike muscular structure at the junction of the esophagus and the stomach. This reduces reflux (backward movement) of stomach acid up into the esophagus. The procedure was very effective at reducing both heartburn symptoms (89% before procedure to 12% after) and the need for daily medicines like omeprazole (100% before to 15% after). The device has not been in use for a very long time, so long-term safety data is unavailable. Some people had to have the devices removed because they eroded into the esophagus, but only 0.3% of devices were removed at four years. There are other types of surgeries used to treat reflux, most of which are effective at reducing both symptoms and the need for medication. There are now options for treatment being done endoscopically (with an instrument placed through the mouth), without the need even for laparoscopic surgery (with the instrument being placed by small incisions through the skin). My personal practice is to discuss medication treatments as well as surgical treatments for people with moderate to severe acid reflux. Surgery in younger people may have more benefit by preventing a lifetime of daily medication. People who do not get relief with medication are those who most clearly benefit from these kinds of procedures. ***

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Dog’s Begging Spirals Out of Control DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our dog “Boadicea” is a sweetheart, but when she wants a treat she turns into a little monster. She drools on my arm, chews on my roommate’s shoe (with his foot in it), barks loudly, yips ... whatever it takes. We eventually break down and give her a treat. This happens several times a day. How can we stop this behavior? -- Darren in Manchester, New Hampshire DEAR DARREN: There are two steps I’d recommend to curb this behavior, because you know the downside of Boadicea’s begging: spiraling behavioral problems, future digestive issues and potential obesity. First, reinforce her basic obedience training. Work with her at least once a day on the “sit,” “stay,” “lie down,” “leave it” and “come here” commands. I recommend not working with her during the time that you’re normally relaxing in the living room with your roommate, because you want to try to reinforce that certain places and times are for training, play or treats. Obedience training alone won’t resolve the problem, though, because she’s developed a habit of begging whenever you’re trying to relax or socialize. So, you’ll need to employ the “ignore and divert” strategy as well. Ignore her attention-seeking behavior for a specific amount of time ... say, five minutes. Next, command her to either sit or lie down, and give her a chew toy. When she inevitably gets up to beg again, repeat the process. Don’t give her a treat at all. This will take time, but eventually she will get it. Many dog owners add a structured treat time to the day. For example, after your dinner and dishes are done, she can have her treat. This will help reinforce when and where she gets treats, and how she is supposed to behave. Send your tips, questions and comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

Harding’s Furniture recently bought Mount Morris Furniture. The deal was closed on Friday, August 13th. The Stallone and Bozzette family was thrilled to hand over the reins to another family owned business. Luke, Mike, Ted, and Debbie Harding plan to run the business in a similar manner to their location in Attica; revolving their core around customer service. The product line is ironically similar to the same lines that Mount Morris already carried so it was a perfect fit. Harding’s does plan to add Flexsteel, Restonic, and some Ashley to the product mix as well. This new second location is much larger, allowing for more products to be shown. This also aligns well for their vision to create this store into a wonderful mattress gallery with an extensive line of mattresses. Harding’s current location in Attica is 10,000 square feet and the second location is 18,000 square feet, nearly twice as large as the original location. In addition to the larger showroom, Harding’s also quickly jumped on the opportunity as Mount Morris Furniture also sold them their 10,000 square foot mega warehouse. This puts Harding’s in an excellent spot by allowing for them to stock more items which are crucial during a time when it is taking longer than usual for product to come in. Harding’s will be assuming all of Mount Morris Furniture’s open orders and will fulfill the deliveries and service issues that are pending. They look forward to this wonderful opportunity and wish the Stallones all the best in retirement. The second location in Mount Morris will be closed temporarily for renovations and do inventory. They plan to re-open Monday, August 30th for the HUGE retirement sale to unload much of the existing inventory that they purchased from Mount Morris Furniture.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

We’ve Gotten Careless If you read the news, you know there are serious questions about how well the vaccines we’re been taking actually protect against COVID. Especially worrisome is the protection they offer against the Delta variant that’s sweeping the world. Those in authority seem to be flipping a coin each day, depending on who you listen to. Some days we can throw caution to the wind and go about our business, and other days we need to continue to beware. There’s talk of going back to the indoor mask mandates, and that’s likely one step away from again limiting the number of people allowed in stores at one time, or so I imagine. If those things happen, it won’t be like it was in March 2020. Back then we were all scared to death. We’d spread out in the grocery aisles, staying far away from other people. We wore that mask at all times when out and about, and we respected all those 6-foot markers on the floor. We certainly didn’t sit down at a restaurant table for four and take off our masks, or head to the gym. Now, having lived through that whole horrible year, people are tired of it all, and we’re eager for a normal life. We think that because so many people have had the vaccination, that surely we’ll be safe. I fear that this time, however, if the mask mandates come again, it will be even more dangerous than it was last year, because we’ve gotten too casual, careless and passive about our safety. My short to-do list involves buying new masks and more hand sanitizer, renewing my grocery curbside pickup account ... and saying no to an invitation to join a dance group. How about you? Are you ready for what’s likely coming? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

In their baskets, brave aeronauts (pilots) ride the winds wherever adventure takes them. This favorite New York festival will mark its 40th anniversary this Labor Day weekend, celebrating over 140 years of ballooning tradition in Dansville. Like many good things, ballooning in Dansville started with family, the Allen family to be exact. Relatives James and Ira Allen caught the ballooning bug while assisting Thaddeus Lowe with the Union Army observational balloon Intrepid during the Civil War. Returning home after the war, Ira Allen and his brothers began building hot air balloons of their own with Ira flying the first smoke-filled, hot air balloon over Dansville around 1877. “Captain” Eddie Allen and his family turned hot air ballooning into entertainment. They became the Flying Allens, performing in several states. At this time, each performance ended with a parachute descent back to earth. It wasn’t until 1982 that the ballooning spotlight once again returned to Dansville with a Labor Day weekend event called the “Greit Oktoberfest Balloon Rallye.” Why Dansville? Besides its ballooning history, the village is uniquely situated in a valley conducive to just the kind of naturally occurring currents of air balloonists need. These invisible currents of air, known as “lift,” enable hot air balloons to soar to great heights before pushing them steadily on their way.

Several hot air balloons dot the brilliant blue sky at the 2019 NYS Festival of Balloons!

Looking at all this festival has to offer, it may be surprising that a festival this large and exciting owes its success to local volunteers, but it’s true. Dansville’s Festival of Balloons is organized completely by an allvolunteer staff. The festival extends into the Dansville community, having donated over $200,000 to local charities and organizations since 2002. Also, many pilots stay with local host families. For some of pilots, the bonds they have made with these families have lasted more than 20 years. Dansville’s youth organizations volunteer as well. National Junior Honor Society and National Society members from Dansville High School Volunteer to help with waste. They clean tables, remove and replace garbage bags, and recycle containers as needed throughout the festival grounds. Dansville Boys Varsity Soccer team assists with event setup, and Dansville Varsity Football team joins in on Labor Day morning before their practice to assist with event tear down and clean up. While some hot air balloon pilots are retiring with fewer taking up the sport in younger generations, several balloons will be present at this year’s festival. Fan favorite balloon The Purple People Eater will once again delight guests. Also anticipated alongside several beautifully patterned balloons are several shaped ones such as Yellow Bird, Rocky the Flying Squirrel, and Mr. Winkle among others. Don’t forget to look for the giant birthday cake balloon which will rise in honor of the festival’s 40th anniversary.

Finding success, the “balloon rallye” continued, holding its first GLOW in 1992. In 1996, it briefly changed its name to “Rally in the Valley.” Finally, in 1997, this unique and popular balloon festival earned the designation of “New York State Festival of Balloons” from the New York State Legislature.

Since then, the balloon festival has continued to grow, typically attracting tens of thousands of guests over the course of its three-day event. It has expanded to host its first ever swap meet and a Sunday car show open to not only cars but also trucks, motorcycles, off road 4x4’s, and special interest vehicles. In addition to its hospitality tent where guests gather to eat and relax, the festival will offer a concert tent for guests to enjoy featured bands Lucky Number, Full Scale, Southern Tier All-Star Jazz Band, and Flint Creek.

an and Gary Roth have been selling fresh homegrown produce out of their Raging Winds Farm for nearly 40 years. Nestled among hills surrounding Dansville, the beautiful West Sparta property seemed perfect to the newlyweds, particularly Gary who grew up on a beef cattle farm and “has farming in his heart.” So, the couple moved to Dansville and started gardening. A few years later, Jan and Gary were selling fresh produce out of their home, even after the tornado that took their barn and gave their farm its name. Their produce stand grew little by little, starting out as a roadside table, then a table with an umbrella, then a little stand with shelves to the freestanding little building it is today. In fact, the couple even led the Dansville Farmers Market for about 30 years, bringing their fresh produce into the

heart of the Dansville community. Today, Jan and Gary continue to offer their own produce grown as organically as possible. “We do not use any chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides,” said Jan, a retired music teacher and liturgist for the Holy Family Catholic Community. Jan and Gary, parents of two and grandparents of two, want their customers to know they can trust where and how Raging Winds produce is grown. For Jan and Gary, people matter. “We really enjoy doing this. We meet so many nice people. We enjoy getting to know them as much as we like growing produce and flowers!” Raging Winds Farm offers many fruits, vegetables and flowers while also supplementing their stand with quite a bit of additional fruit grown in the Finger Lakes area.

Raging Winds Farm is open every day from 9AM to dusk 79106 Kysorville-Byersville Road, Dansville, NY 14437. “Com o ou t ou far; we’d lov t mee yo! ” GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

(585) 728-2100 Alan L. Kinney November 23, 2020

Thomas E. Nemitz July 6, 2021

Wayland: Alan L. Kinney, 65 years of age, passed away Monday, November 23, 2020.

Thomas E. Nemitz, age 66 of West Palm Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. Tom was born February 1955 in Canandaigua. He was a graduate of Honeoye Falls-Lima. He then entered the US Army in 1979. Following his enlistment he worked his whole life as a screw machine operator. Tom will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his dedication to work, and his love and devotion to his family and friends. Thomas is predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Shirley Nemitz. He is survived by his three daughters, Janet (Matt) McDonald of Wayland, Anna Nemitz of Caledonia, and Susan Nemitz of Rochester; his six grandchildren, Brandon, Dylan, Norman, Chloe, Eddie, and Avery; his three siblings, Ed Nemitz, Nancy (Russ) Dudash, and Rebecca (Roy) Steele; and many nieces and nephews. Burial services will be held at Oakridge Cemetery in Lima on Saturday, August 21st at 11am. We will gather immediately after to celebrate Tom’s life at Pond View Shelter in Mendon Ponds Park.

Alan was born April 25, 1955 in Dansville, the son of Charles and Elsie (McCollister) Kinney. He grew up in Wayland, attended Wayland Central School and remained a life resident of the area. His employment spanned a couple of different areas throughout his life. He was a mainstay at Smitty’s Pop-n-Hops for many years. He was always there to greet you and help. Alan also worked as direct support staff at the Wayland ARC Residence for many years. He loved the residents and thought of them as family. His hobbies were many! He enjoyed music, dancing and playing the drums. It has been said he played the meanest dashboard drums! Alan enjoyed riding his new motorcycle, his bicycle and was always seen walking around the village. Back in the day, he was a member of the locally famed “Pack Rats” and dubiously named “Al Capone.” Alan’s love though was his family: his wife, Judy, son, Jared and two girls Kayla and Jenna and all of his siblings. Alan was compassionate, warm hearted, quirky, funny, and opinionated. He had the kindest soul, loved all and never judged. The best dad his kids could ask for; simply put - a wonderful man! Alan had a heart of gold and his capacity for acceptance and love for others was immeasurable. He was cherished and will be missed by all his family and friends. Alan was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Elsie Kinney; his son, Jared and his sister, Jeanne King. He is survived by his wife, Judy Kinney of Wayland; his beloved daughters, Kayla “KayKay LaLa” of Wayland and Jenna “Jenna Babe” (Shawn) Towner of Cohocton; his grand dogs, Stewie and Nova; his siblings, Michael (Marilyn) Kinney of Geneseo, Janice (Dieter) Rellier of MO, Marlene “Marnie Moomaw” Kinney of Fairport, his sister, Anne (Lee) Rocker of KS who had the distinct privilege of being Alan’s twin, Kevin (Kathy) Kinney of OR, Ron (Becky) Kinney of FL and Dennis (Lisa) Kinney of Rochester; along with many many nieces, nephews and extended family all over the country. A celebration of life for Alan will be Saturday, August 28, 2021 from 2-5pm at the Wayland American Legion. Contributions in memory of Alan may be made to Compeer of Rochester, 259 Monroe Ave., Rochester, NY 14607. Their mission “Through the power of supportive friendships, Compeer serves as a bridge to enhanced wellness and community integration for those with social and emotional barriers.” Please visit www.stgeorgefuneralhome.com for online condolences.

Looking for a Roaring Good Time? Come Rally in the Valley! BY ROBERT MELLEN

I

f you enjoyed a good time once and could do it again, would you? What if it promised to be even better than before, with more action, better food, and even more games with bigger prizes?

Well, here’s your chance for a day of fun: the second annual Rally in the Valley, an opportunity to get on the road again for a grand excursion and party created by the Avon Rotary club. A participant in last year’s rally, Sharon Madison, is eager to have another go. “We’re planning to do this year’s rally because last year’s was very challenging,” she said. “Rotary has stepped up to address those challenges. Competitive people don’t give up. We just keep coming back for more.” Addressing last year’s problems was one of the major goals, rally planner Julie Carney said. “Participants and Rotarians had a great time last year, but some rally-ers told us how it could be better. So, we took their advice and tried to make it bigger and better this year. We think we succeeded.” Like Madison, you can expect to take an intriguing trip around northern Livingston County as you and your required navigator decode veiled clues to find destinations where you can rack up points. When you finish, return to one of the state’s most enchanting party venues, Oak Knolls Manor, where a delicious buffet - featuring barbecued chicken awaits.

Cars and teams line up awaiting the start of the Rotary road rally in 2020.

they were able to contribute to such worthwhile charities.” After registering, your day on Saturday, Sept. 18, will play out like this: Rally registration – Noon to 1 p.m. at the Avon Middle School, 191 Clinton St. Lunch – Noon to 1 p.m. for sale sponsored by the Avon High School Interact Club. Hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, chips, soda, and water.

“With so many events being canceled by COVID, this rally is unique in that people can have dinner in comfort at Oak Knolls while they relax and enjoy beautiful views of northern A high arching beamed ceiling dramatizes the main floor of the Wells Barn, built Genesee Valley,” said Julie in the early 20th century. Welch, Oak Knolls event coordinator. “Because our venue is so big and parts of the shindig will be spread out, people can feel comfortable congregating while still following COVID guidelines. And if some folks are still worried, they can get their dinner to go.” And there’s even more than dinner. Festivities include a corn hole tournament, s’mores bar and campfire, music, cigar bar, and a punch cup game. Rally winners will get their $500 grand prize, and other teams will have a chance at a prize for best in show classic car and for best themed team. The cars as well as the occupants can be decorated. Other people can win too, with chances on raffles, 50/50, and a lottery vest. At press time, there were 15 raffle baskets valued from $85 to $100. Included are such things as a tailgater basket, bourbon basket, fishing basket, and a dinner-for-two date night. But most importantly, Avon Rotary will use proceeds from entry fees, games and sponsorships to support its many charities. So just by signing up for a good time, participants will be helping more than 30 local organizations such as Avon Scouts, Gilda’s Club, the county ambulance service, Avon’s food pantry and library, several literacy projects, E.A.R.S. of Noyes Hospital, Bivona Child Advocacy, and dozens more, plus other international service projects.

Rally start – 1 p.m. Clues will be handed out at each location on the route. Shindig – 4-10 p.m. Catered buffet – 4:30-6:30 p.m. Rally winners announced – 5 p.m. Combined entry for the rally and shindig is $45 or $25 for those 16 and under. If you can’t run the rally, come to the shindig only at $35. Register in advance at https://rallyinthevalley2021. itemorder.com/sale

Amazing Staff at Batavia’s Perry Pet I am overdue in thanking the amazing staff at Perry Pet in Batavia. We went through an incredibly difficult time this past April when we had to say goodbye to our sweet girl. Our dog was almost 17 years old and a huge part of our family. The staff at Perry Pet were kind, helpful, considerate, and so supportive during this time. Because of their kindness, we were able to have our whole family together one last time. I can’t tell you how much this meant to us. We cannot thank you enough for helping us through one of the most difficult times our family has gone through and for treating our girl with grace and dignity. The beautiful card and the touching memento that were sent to us afterwards were such an amazing surprise. Now we have her paw prints framed and a touching reminder of our sweet girl. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Credit where it’s due I’d like to thank Alexander Central School, its administrators, teachers, and the school board at the time for getting me involved at a young and impressionable age. I learned a lot.

Mind your own business To the person who put a face mask on, entered the fitness room, and tried to belittle me and make fun of the fact that I wear a mask.(You never wear a mask.) I am vaccinated, but I still wear one to protect myself and others, unike you. Then, you ask me what I’m doing on the treadmill and tell me that I should be outside walking. You then replied that you walk 4 miles a day outside. So what? Who are you to judge me? Who are you to know why I have to use a treadmill? I guess you don’t know I have titanium in three different parts of my body (rods, plates and cadaver bone). I’ve had two surgeries on my spine and a botched foot surgery. Stay in your lane, buddy, and mind your own business! A sad week for our country! After 20 years our time in Afghanistan has ended. After great cost in terms of human life and money spent the people that supported us there have been left in many cases high and dry. It might have always ended like this but it’s still a shame that things came to a close the way they did. Nonetheless thanks to all the vets that served there overseas. To those who are unvaccinated. In case you haven’t heard, hospitals are overrun with Covid patients, children are struggling to breathe (they don’t have the choice to get vaccinated) and thousands of people are dying. All because you “know your rights” and want the government to butt out. How many of you refused your stimulus check? Your unemployment? Your Social Security? It’s time to start thinking about someone other than yourself. It’s not too late to do the responsible thing and get vaccinated.
