Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky, is by no means waste of time. ~John Lubbock, “Recreation,” The Use of Life, 1894

REASONS TO GET AN AIR FRYER

Good for tight kitchens: Those who have small kitchens may benefit from air fryers that boast combination cooking features. That means they can use one appliance for all of their meals, saving them from the nuisance of overcrowded counter space.

HOW TO KEEP OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS SAFE

Purchase an outdoor television. Outdoor televisions can be expensive, but the cost of such devices will depend on what homeowners are looking for. Homeowners who plan to spend ample time outdoors watching games, movies and their favorite shows may feel a high-end outdoor television, which can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000, is well worth the investment. But those working with smaller budgets can find a quality 4K outdoor TV for around $2,000.That’s still a steep price tag, but the electronics experts at P.C. Richard & Son note that outdoor TVs are designed with safety features that indoor televisions don’t have. For example, outdoor TVs can self-regulate temperature and moisture levels, greatly reducing the risk of electrical issues.

PAW’S CORNER

BE A CHAMPION PET SITTER

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm 13 years old and want to make money by being a pet sitter and dog walker. To try it out, my dad suggested that I pet sit for the neighbor who is going on vacation for two weeks. ey agreed! I'm really excited. What tips do you have so I do a good job? -- Austin in Portland, Maine

DEAR AUSTIN: What a great idea! You can try out pet sitting and see if you like it, and your dad is there to give support and advice. Here are a few tips:

-- Bring a notebook and pen with you to every pet sitting visit.

-- Talk to the pet owner before they leave. Get all of the pet's health information. Find out what time they need to be fed and any medications they need to take. Get their veterinarian's number and any special instructions. Find out where the food, treats and leash are stored. (Write this all in the notebook!)

-- Keep to the agreed-upon time to visit and/or walk the pet. It's important for the pet to stay on a regular schedule, and it builds trust with your customer.

-- Do not feed the pet any food or treats not provided (or specified) by the owner.

-- Contact the owner if you have additional questions or if an emergency arises.

ese are just the basics. As you build your pet-sitting empire, you will encounter different situations and will learn the best ways to respond. Your parents can help, and so can that trusty notebook! During and a er every visit, review your notes about the experience and think about how you can do a better job or accomplish certain tasks more effectively.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Handrails, grab bars, nonslip stair treads, and many other devices can make homes safer for people of all ages and abilities. Outfit cabinets and closets with organizers that put frequently used items within easy reach. A sturdy step stool can reduce the risk of injury while reaching for items stored on high shelves.

HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL

Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.

Terry D. Wilkins

September 7, 2024

Cohocton – Terry D. Wilkins, 81 years of age, passed away early Saturday morning, September 7, 2024 at the Vincent House in Wayland. Terry was born January 24, 1943 in Hornell, the son of Max and Donna (Lander) Wilkins. He grew up in Hornell and graduated from Hornell High School.

Terry’s first love in life was farming. His life as a young boy was spent on his grandfather’s farm in Cohocton. He later purchased it and spent the rest of his life there. He especially liked his cows, all of which were named and he was very knowledgeable about them. He loved all the animals on the farm that came along as well. When he opened the door in the morning they would just show up. Terry’s love for farming was evident as the years progressed and he couldn’t farm the way he wanted, and a part of him let go as well.

Terry and Linda Plowe were married August 1,2009,however they were a loving couple many, many years before that. ey had been together over 30 years, living and loving their way through life. He had a kind and caring way about him and he was always willing to help anybody at any time. Terry also enjoyed flea markets, yard sales, tractor shows and tractor pulls, county fairs, casinos and who can forget his favorite song ‘Lucille,’ a song by Kenny Rogers and of course sung by Terry Wilkins.

While not farming,Terry’s second career was with Pirrung Auctioneers. He was an integral ingredient in the making of successful auctions during his nearly 40 years as an Associate of Pirrung Auctioneers. Terry served Pirrung clients as a very capable appraiser, sales manager

St. George - Forsythe

and clerk, be it cattle, machinery, real estate, antiques or tools. His experience, knowledge and wisdom were spread over the years to various recipients. During his tenure with Pirrung he maintained a New York Real Estate License through omas P. Wamp. Terry Wilkins and Jim Pirrung covered thousands of miles together, conducting auctions from western Ohio, throughout New Jersey and Rhode Island and North Carolina. Terry often mentioned that ‘we never had a bad meal on the road!’ In the spring of 1977 he hosted what would become the first of 30 consignment farm auctions including two dairy herds at his farm along State Route 371 between Cohocton and North Cohocton. ese local historical events are still remembered by many.

Terry was predeceased by his parents, Max and Donna Wilkins. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Wilkins of Cohocton; his children, Elizabeth Wilkins of AK, John (Tracey) Wilkins of CT and Douglas (Sue) Wilkins of Cohocton; his grandchildren, Hannah (Conrad) Dolholf and Miles Wilkins; his step-children, Sharyl (James) Pirrung of Wayland and Karen (Basil) Williams of Syracuse; his stepgrandchildren, Lindsay (Chris) Miles and Allyson (Michael) Kuhn; and his great-grandchildren, Carter and Carlea Kuhn.

Terry’s family and friends are invited to call Sunday, September 15th, 2024 from 2:00-5:00 pm.Terry’s funeral service will be Monday morning, September 16th, 2024 at the funeral home. Interment will take place immediately following at Clearview Cemetery in North Cohocton.

Contributions in memory of Terry D. Wilkins may be made to the Vincent House, 310 Second Ave., Wayland, NY 14572 or to the Hatch Hose Fire Company, 30 University Ave., Atlanta, NY 14808.

TIPS TO COPE WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE

Discuss the death of your loved one.TheAPAnotes that avoiding talking about a deceased loved one can lead to isolation and a disruption in the healing process. Kindness in our community

This past Sunday my husband and I visited a local flea market. Several people saw me struggling to maneuver his wheelchair over the gravel and offered to help. One kind young man pushed him all the way back to the car when he saw that we were ready to leave. It is comforting to know that people can be so compassionate. We are blessed to be surrounded by such kind and thoughtful strangers. Thank you all.

Thank you!

THANK YOU! To the gentleman who picked me up after I fell in the parking lot of a Restaurant on Lake Road August 1st.

Went to a town park concert. Kids running around. Most enjoying the music. Then there were those who have to talk louder than the music with every other word is the “f” word. What’s wrong with these people? Did they even graduate elementary school? Did their parents teach them any class? One mother, who I applaud, went over and asked them to stop cursing around her child. That lasted only about five minutes. She moved to another spot. Stay home if you’re not there for the music and keep your garbage mouth among yourselves. We don’t want to hear you!

Let’s Fix This Accident Waiting to Happen

I see so many people walking and biking on the roads at night while wearing dark colored clothing. This is an accident waiting to happen. If people don’t realize it, they need to be educated about how dangerous it is to walk on roads without sidewalks without reflective gear or bright clothing! Local colleges should be giving out reflective gear instead of pens or other knickknacks if they aren’t already.

Here’s A Tip

* When preparing outdoor furniture for winter storage, it's important to give it a nice cleaning. If you have a truck, why not load it up and bring it to the local selfserve car wash? e specialized brushes make it easy to clean right there in the back of the vehicle, and a pressure rinse gets soap and dirt from all the nooks and crannies.

* "While at a backyard barbecue now that the weather has turned nice out (down in the South, anyway), I learned this trick from a neighbor. Put hot dogs in the slow cooker. Don't add water or anything. ey taste really good without taking up space on the grill." -- J.V. in Alabama

MOMENTS IN TIME

Dansville, NY

* On Sept. 16, 1893, the largest land run in history begins with more than 100,000 people pouring into the Cherokee Strip of Oklahoma to claim valuable land. Towns like Norman and Oklahoma City sprung up almost overnight. (The History Channel)

Evelyn Marie Shoots: 100 Years of Faith, Family, and Creativity

Our mom, Evelyn Marie Shoots, was born in Cuba, NY on August 10, 1924, the first of five daughters for William and Eva Matylas. Mom and Dad, Jay Wallace Shoots, were married October 6, 1945 and celebrated the birth of each of their four children, Evelyn Marie, Jay Wallace, Jr., Evabelle Louise, and James William.

As a tremendous lover of words, she was always writing story ideas and loved coming up with different slogan messages for various products. Evy began entering skill contests where different companies offered prizes for the best slogan or tag line for their products. Over the years, Mom won appliances, a convertible car, and even a $25k dream home in 1955!

Mom’s desire to write her own book of inspirational poetry was her biggest dream. Her desire to share her love for the Lord and bring hope and joy to people was her heart’s biggest wish. rough encouragement from family and friends, her dream came true! Bonita Healy helped with the publication process and Joyce Shutts helped with the book cover photo. us came Grove of Grace

Mom continues to write poems daily. I believe she has written well over 2,000 poems throughout the years.

Mom and Dad also started their own business called Jaycra , focusing on wood and plexiglass artistry. ey sold their specialized items at the Rochester airport, Alpha and Omega Christian Bookstores, Peterson Drug Stores, and many others!

Son, James, admires Mom as industrious. Even in her 70s and beyond, she worked for several companies, helping others who were disabled, etc. She even drove herself from Henrietta to West Greece for one of her jobs.

Daughter, Evy Marie, fondly remembers how she used to draw paper dolls so we daughters could cut them out and design clothes for them.

Mom loved to encourage others by sending cards of all kinds. She sent out hundreds over the years, making dear friends at many post offices. Jim and Evie cheer Mom on as when we take turns driving Mom for daily rides, we point out mail vehicles and she waves as she can and smiles to the drivers. When they see Mom, they wave back.

For over 18 years, Mom and Evie were blessed to do volunteer community food ministry through Wegmans and Lori’s Natural Foods with donations, sorting, bagging, and reloading into their vehicle as some recipients were diabetic or had to have gluten free foods. ey delivered the food to many in need.

Mom daily praised the Lord for all blessings. We praise God for her and have been blessed by her love and joyful presence in our lives. Her favorite Bible scripture, Nehemiah 8:10, “ e joy of the Lord is your strength” is truly how she lives and breathes.

Happy Birthday, Mom! We love you so very much!

Living Music – by Evelyn “Evy” Shoots

Music is a golden thread in life’s fine tapestry weaving through designs of days enhancing all we see Songs of dawnings carry hope to li our spirits high boosting courage to improve the plans of days gone by Notes may wail with winter wind but sing through summer trees painting scenes of thankful times in living melodies

Seeing Spring’s parade of blooms plants precious memories joyful chirpings fill the air in chorus with each breeze

Even when we don’t expect sweet strains of vibrant keys hover to renew our souls recalling hours of ease

Hearing voices that we love is music to our ears cherished days together send sweet echoes through the years God placed music in our hearts for tuning with His love trusting in His guiding hand yields more than we dream of!

Tunes recall our keepsake scenes abridging time and space holding moments ever dear with notes that don’t erase Inspiration radiates in chords or rhapsodies charming to a depth of soul as tired tension flees

UNDERSTANDING CATARACTS

Cataract diagnosis and treatment: An eye doctor will examine dilated eyes to diagnose cataracts. A slit-lamp microscope can make it easier to spot abnormalities, states the AOA.

The eye professional will consider age and the severity of cataracts to determine a treatment strategy. Early loss of vision due to cataracts may be mitigated by stronger lighting or a change in eyeglasses or contact lens prescription.

Johns Hopkins says cataract surgery is one of the most common eye surgeries. It is safe and effective. An ophthalmologist will remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial, clear lens. If cataracts are present in both eyes, each surgery will be performed separately. A possible complication of cataract surgery is when a part of the natural lens that is not taken out during surgery becomes cloudy and blurs eyesight. This can be remedied with a laser treatment.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 65-year-old, overweight white woman. I recently had a DEXA scan, and based on the results, my general physician prescribed Fosamax for osteopenia.

The first dose created a horrible reaction two days after ingestion, with severe pain in both of my arms, my neck, and my legs. I was in absolute agony for two days, then it cleared up.

With the next dose a week later, I hesitated, but still decided to take it. Two days later, the reaction hit me again, only worse. I could barely walk, and my energy was so low. I spent four days in bed, except to cry when heading to the bathroom. I had not taken my Lasix prescription for those four days, as I could barely make it to the bathroom.

I contacted my doctor, and she discontinued Fosamax. She’s referring me to a rheumatologist. I read that this drug has all my symptoms, plus more, listed under the severe reaction warning. I will not take it again.

Also, a friend told me that this drug is not effective for osteoporosis after more than 20 years of drug tests, and I should not have been prescribed this drug, since I have osteopenia, not osteoporosis. Your thoughts? -- C.W.

ANSWER: Alendronate (Fosamax) is in the class of drugs called bisphosphonates. These are powerful drugs that should not be prescribed lightly. They do have the potential for severe side effects. Severe musculoskeletal pain can occur days or months (sometimes years) after starting the medicine. The Food and Drug Administration has advised prescribers to discuss this possibility with their patients so that the drug can be stopped immediately if it occurs. There are other options available if the person really needs treatment.

Your friend is half right. Powerful drugs like Fosamax are usually not indicated in people who have low bone mass (osteopenia) without osteoporosis. However, a history of a fragility fracture (breaking a bone from minor trauma that isn’t expected to cause a fracture) can make the diagnosis of osteoporosis, even if the bone density isn’t in the usual osteoporotic range. A person can have a high risk of fractures for other reasons, and a clinical tool called the FRAX score helps clinicians identify those who might benefit from treatment.

But your friend is also half wrong. When used appropriately, Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs are effective at reducing the risk of fractures. A vertebral body fracture can cause years of pain and be avoided easily, while a hip fracture can be devastating. So, there are very good reasons to prescribe these medicines.

Finally, let me warn readers against complacence in treatment with these drugs. They may be appropriately prescribed for a high-risk person, but most people should not stay on this drug forever. Follow-up DEXA scans should guide therapy, and after three to five years, a conscious decision should be made whether to continue therapy.

Readers who have been on these drugs for more than five years and haven’t had careful follow-ups on their results should ask their doctors whether they still need to be taking them.***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

FRUITS & VEGETABLES MAY LOWER RISK OF PAD

Pain in the lower extremities may be indicative of a condition called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the limbs, head and organs, contributing to atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries. Blocked blood flow and eventual limited oxygen supply to these areas can cause pain and numbness. When severe enough, PADmayleadtotissuedeath.

Discomfort due to PAD usually occurswhenapersoniswalking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.

Whenundiagnosed,PADcanlead tofurthercomplications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a fewstepstoimprovediet.

According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption andlowerPADriskremainedeven after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status, and various cardiovascularriskfactors.

Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limitedmeatandmeatproducts.

Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
