HOMETOWN PHOTOS Great neighbors! I would like to thank my neighbors for mowing my “lawn,” lending me your weed trimmer, and always being willing to offer a kind word and a helping hand. Also special thanks to one of our other neighbors for helping us paint our ceilings and stairs and for helping us catch our puppy when she got loose. We are so blessed to have moved to such a caring neighborhood! - Amanda D. Woodward Memorial Library Since road construction has been going on in front of the Woodward Memorial library, some patrons have been having a hard time returning & getting books, movies ect... The librarians now come down to the school 6 times a week for pick ups & drop offs which is greatly appreciated! I would like to give a shout out to Trish for taking the time to pick out some wonderful books for myself and my husband to read! All the ladies who work there are so helpful, especially when it comes to using the computer, faxing, ect... We are very thankful for their patience! Just wanted to thank you all for the great job that you do! - The Prince Family

Bad drivers I just don't understand why people driving on [local road] going towards [local road], have to pass you on the right when you are going around 65. They get in front of you to turn and then go slow, as if taunting you. Does it make you feel like a big man, Mr. Gray Toyota SUV? Seriously, what was your problem because I beat you at the light? Get a life!

Best wishes! Congrats to Steve at Steve’s Styles on his retirement! You certainly deserve it. Karen, I’m so excited for your new journey! - Christine W.

Wake up and hear the music Hard of hearing or very near is all I can figure for the "sound engineers" at concerts these days. Just attended a [local] concert the other evening, and thanks to the droning bass and percussion, I could not hear a word (lyric). So sad the money that is spent and the lack of enjoyment for these overpriced concerts, especially now that we can attend them in person! There is no need to feel the music as the sound people seem to insist upon.

Thank you! A special thank you to all our military families for the sacrifices you make for our country every day. It shouldn’t take tragedies like Afghanistan to bring it to our attention. Every day, for every contribution, we should convey how much your service is appreciated!

A Heartfelt Thanks Many thanks to our amazing family, friends and community for the support you have shown to help us get through such a challenging time. We are very grateful for every one of you and for all you have done from cards, meals, gifts, calls, messages, visits, prayers and assistance. I can’t express how much your help, love and support has meant to me and my family. It is very heartwarming to know you are all in my corner as I go forward in healing. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The original time machine in “Back to the Future” was not a DeLorean, but an old refrigerator. According to HuffPost, “Ultimately, it was determined that it probably was not a good idea to use a refrigerator in such a manner as kids might want to reenact the scene.” * Napoleon introduced brass buttons on soldier uniforms’ sleeves to discourage them from wiping their noses. * According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the stickers on fruit are edible. We haven’t tried them ourselves, though.

The Rowling family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, aides, and everyone else who made my stay at Noyes hospital better than I could possibly have expected. Your cheerfulness and willingness to help me be as comfortable as possible really made a bad situation bearable and left memories of wonderful people instead of illness and dread. Lynn Rowling

Livingston County Announces New Funding with Back to Business Program BY LIVINGSTON COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

L

ivingston County Economic Development (LCED) has received supplemental Community Development Block Grant funding to be used to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. In response to the economic hardships experienced by businesses resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, these funds are being used to provide grants to eligible businesses to support customer and staff safety, improve business resiliency, reopen Livingston County businesses to full capacity, and expand businesses to recover revenue quickly. Eligible businesses must be located in Livingston County, must be a for-profit sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, Limited Liability Company or other legal form of business, and must have 25 or fewer employees. Eligible businesses must create new jobs, restore jobs (including increasing hours), or retain jobs that are at risk of being lost if financial assistance is not received. If the business has five or fewer owners and employees, the applicant may be able to income qualify for funding in place of creating jobs. All projects must be located in Livingston County, New York and have a “brick-andmortar” business location that is not a home address. “This is an opportunity for resilience and growth in the businesses of Livingston County. Bill Bacon, LCED Director These grants are meant to spur innovation and adaptation to the new reality of economic life with a highly contagious virus”, says Bill Bacon, Director of Economic Development. Back to Business will make grants of up to $60,000 per eligible applicant. “This program will bring back jobs, enhance the way business is done, and expand services to increase customer satisfaction,” says Bacon. “We have definitely seen an increase in people supporting local businesses,” said Maureen Wheeler, LCED Deputy Director. “A lot of people are moving to the area, and customers are visiting local businesses once again. Our Back to Business program seeks to proactively help businesses better prepare for the future.” To qualify, businesses must demonstrate hardship from COVID and show that they have a project they are working on for their business. These projects are expected to vary from things like expanding outdoor dining to bringing people back to work to restoring businesses to pre-COVID hours. “Customers expect a different type of service than they did in the past, including options such as touch-free checkout, curbside pickup, and e-commerce availability,” explained

Wheeler. “They want to be able to browse merchandise online before they order, for example. These expectations are here to stay.” Grant funds will be provided as a reimbursement for eligible expenses, not to exceed 80% of total project cost. Eligible expenses must be incurred after award, and within 90 days of award. Program funds may be used for any justifiable business purpose associated with the expansion or establishment of operations after the negative impacts of COVID-19 including, but not limited to furniture, fixtures, equipment, operating expenses, and working capital that will prevent, prepare for, and respond to the impacts of the Maureen Wheeler, coronavirus pandemic. HOME IMPROVEMENT

Butler HOME IMPROVEMENTS, LLC

There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS Not all bees build the wax or paper structures associated with traditional beehives. Those hives may not be readily visible even for bees that do build them. Wood-nesting bees can nest in twigs or dead trees. Bees may nest underground or use the burrows abandoned by small rodents. Before excavating or disturbing more remote areas of the yard, check to see if it is a habitat for bees. Leave some natural areas of the landscape untouched and do not remove twigs, mounds of dirt and native flowers to attract more bees. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On Sept. 2, 31 B.C., at the Battle of Actium, Roman leader Octavian wins a decisive victory against the forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, queen of Egypt. Antony and Cleopatra broke through the enemy lines and fled to Egypt, where they would later commit suicide. * On Sept. 3, 1935, a new land-speed record is set by Britain’s Sir Malcolm Campbell on the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah. Campbell and his 2,500-horsepower Bluebird motor car made two runs over a 1-mile course at speeds averaging over 301 mph. * On Sept. 4, 1972, U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz wins his seventh gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich in the 400-meter medley relay. He set world records in every event. Spitz’s record would stand until Michael Phelps took home eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE

Please come & enjoy. Open to the public. $10 cover charge for everyone with Free First Drink! Must be over 21.

Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn’t around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Use a travel agent. Using a travel agent to plan your vacation can remove any stress and anxiety you may feel when planning a trip and juggling the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people choose to book their own trips as a cost-cutting measure. What they don’t realize is that travel agents may be privy to special deals and perks they can pass on to customers. These agents also know the ins and outs of certain resorts and locales. Leaving the legwork in their accomplished hands means all you have to do is show up with your reservations instead of pouring over the minutiae of planning.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The fuller your refrigerator, the more energy-efficient it is. * Master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock was an ovophobe, or someone who is frightened of eggs. * Children of identical twins are genetically siblings, not cousins. * Australia’s Lake Hillier and Hutt Lagoon are known for their vibrant pink and lilac hues, due to the presence of the algae Dunaliella salina.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles On Our Wish List: Basketballs The recreation center is open again! While they tried to do a “soft opening,” word traveled quickly. Going to the rec center won’t be as it was before, of course. There used to be classes in the middle of the gym, which is surrounded by a long indoor track. Scattered around the interior were basketball hoops and exercise mats. Now, we’re told, we’ll check in at the front door for a specified timeslot (one hour) on the track. At the end of our time period, the center will be emptied and the next group let in. There will be no classes, no use of mats, no basketball ... but we’ll have indoor walking. This is the best news we’ve had around here in a very long time. Indoor walking, while not urgently needed right now, will be most welcome when cold weather arrives. Icy sidewalks send many of us to the rec center, which was closed last year, to walk in winter. But, we’re told, we won’t be able to buddy up and walk with a friend, chatting as we do laps. We’ll walk alone in the right lane, passing in the left lane if we should overtake the person in front of us. No, we won’t be able to use the mats for pre-walk stretching (they’re stacked in the storeroom), and no, the guys won’t be able to play basketball (the balls also are in the storeroom). So, why, if there are so many restrictions about using the rec center, are we happy? We’re happy because it’s one small sign that maybe, just maybe, things are inching back to normal. How will we know for sure? We’ll know, said one wit, if we walk into the rec center and the basketballs are on their racks at the center of the courts. That’s going to be our barometer: basketballs. BACK TO SCHOOL Virtual Storytime Sept. 7-10, 2021 1 Storytime posted each morning on FB

SEPTEMBER 2021 Labor Day & the Balloon Festival In observance of Labor Day, the Library will be closed on Monday, September 6th. However, stop in at the Library before you attend the events and festivities of this, the 40th Anniversary of the New York State Festival of Balloons! Near the Library’s main entrance is a display of art works featuring balloons or the Balloon Festival. A painting by L. Mert Wager shows numerous balloons above our colorful valley. Then a framed copy of the artwork of Roger Kornbau features his Great Oktoberfest Race Balloon poster of 1982. Also on display is Lori Colella’s 2006 historic collage created for the 25th Anniversary Festival featuring a hot air balloon, Clara Barton and a variety of important features of Dansville. Note: if you don’t make it in this weekend, the items will be on display during September. Virtual Storytime for Preschoolers Tuesday through Friday beginning September 7th and ending the 10th, Ms. Mary Ellen is on the Library’s Facebook page with Back-to-School Virtual Storytime every day at 10:30 a.m. As you can guess, all stories on Virtual Storytime next week will focus on SCHOOL! Some stories are about going back to school after the summer while other stories feature what children experience at school on a daily basis. Be sure to connect your youngster with Ms. Mary Ellen on Facebook Tuesday through Friday next week for virtual stories.

National Library Card Sign Up September is Library Card Sign-up Month when the American Library Association and our nation’s libraries join together to remind parents of the power of the Library Card. To recognize this important time, families are invited to join Ms. Mary Ellen on September 18th for a great “maker event.” Families can create button style pins to decorate a backpack, coat, or even to give away as gifts. Space is limited. Registration is required for the hour-long program. Please choose one of two sessions at 10:00 a.m. or at 11:15 a.m. Go to the Library’s registration site at https://owwl.libcal.com/calendar/DansvillePublicLibrary or call us at 585-335-6720. In-Person Storytime for Busy Bees Storytime is back! Come join Ms. Mary Ellen at the Library with the Fall Session of Busy Bee Storytime. The first session for Busy Bee will be Wednesday September 22nd at 10:30 a.m. Busy Bee Storytime will run for 5 weeks every Wednesday through October 20th. This early literacy program for children ages 18 months to 3 years of age helps instill a love for reading and learning. Each week, toddlers and their adults will engage in an interactive session with stories, songs, and fingerplays. Help us prepare your child for success in school. Please register your child as space is limited. Call the Library at 585-335-6720 or go online to: https://owwl.libcal.com/calendar/DansvillePublicLibrary Social distancing will be observed. 1000 Books Before Kindergarten- Congratulations! We are pleased to announce several preschoolers completed the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program earlier this spring and summer. Check them out on Facebook! This nationwide program encourages parents to read aloud to their children. At certain reading milestones, children receive a reward. But the TRUE reward is a love of reading that is the door to success in school! To register your child, stop in at the Library soon!

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Use club soda on a damp rag to wipe down your stainless-steel sink. It will help bring back the shine. * Fresh versus frozen in the seafood aisle: Unless you’re at the docks, most seafood in the grocer’s fresh fish case is thawed from frozen. Always ask. It’s much cheaper to buy frozen and thaw it yourself. * “My mother swears by wrapping her feet in a vinegarsoaked rag once a week to soften calluses. She does this before her bath, and uses a pumice stone to rid her heels of hardened spots on the skin. It seems to work for her, so I thought I would pass it on!” -- C.D. in Colorado * “If you need to keep your 1-year-old corralled in the bath, try using a laundry basket. The water flows in, but she has only so much room to roam. And it lessens the odds she could slip away from you to the other side of the tub. Always stay with baby from the first drop to the last!” -- W.H. in Texas * To distinguish all the cords plugged into a power strip, write the appliance name (TV, DVD, speakers, etc.) on a plastic bread tab, and attach it to the cord at the plug. A quick look at the power strip, and you can unplug any appliance without having to follow the cord through the jungle behind your entertainment center!

Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

Alkaline Diet May Help Boost Cancer Treatment

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion of

Serving Our Community!

the alkaline diet? I have several friends who have battled cancer, and they have adopted alkaline diets as adjuncts to their cancer treatments. Do alkaline diets assist in the treatment and prevention of cancers, or is it just another urban myth? -- T.F.C. ANSWER: A diet high in fruits and vegetables may have a beneficial effect on cancer treatment, in combination with the best cancer treatments available, whether they are surgical, chemotherapeutic or radiation-based. Some of the “alkaline diets” I have read about do emphasize fruits and vegetables, and they may help and certainly will not hurt. However, there is no diet that is a substitute for comprehensive cancer care. The body has powerful mechanisms for maintaining an exact pH, regardless of the acidity (or alkalinity) of the food you eat. Both the lungs and the kidneys work together to maintain the body’s pH at a slightly alkaline 7.4. Only with severe illness will the body’s pH come out of its narrow range of normal, and when it does, that portends a poor outcome without immediate treatment. The mechanism by which fruits and vegetables have been shown to benefit some cancers is not precisely known, but it probably has to do with healthful components of the food, not through any effect on body alkalinity.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day. CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.” –Norman Vincent Peale BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant. EMPLOYMENT
