36 North Main St. Wayland KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS Cut pre-cut trees before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they’ll need to make it through the season when they get home.

585-335-5041 DID YOU KNOW? Kwanzaa traces its origins to Africa and is celebrated across North America and other nations that have large populations that trace their heritage to Africa. The holiday begins on December 26 and continues until January 1. The main components of the celebration include family, community and culture. Kwanzaa was not designed to replace Christmas. In fact, many Kwanzaa celebrants also celebrate Christmas. The word “kwanzaa” is from the Swahili phrase “Matunda ya kwanza,” which means “first fruits.” Maulana Karenga, the professor who created the holiday in 1966, chose Swahili as the language associated with the holiday because it isn’t affiliated with a particular African region or tribe. At the heart of the holiday are seven principles that celebrants embrace and follow: unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Even though the holiday was created for African Americans, many other ethnic groups are inspired by the foundations of Kwanzaa and choose to join in the festivities.

Ellie.
Hi! I’m I was rescued from an abusive home down south when I was 3 months old. I just turned a year this past January! I’m not exactly sure what I am breed-wise. I love napping and playing with toys, as well as being spoiled with clothes (including boots!). I am a great car traveler - I nap almost the entire time! I also know a few tricks - paw, high five, sit, and lay down - my humans are working on teaching me how to roll over! I’m a self-proclaimed lap dog that loves cuddles! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively.

PREVENT CO POISONING
We don’t just list, we sell! OPEN HOUSE, SUNDAY 12/15 - 11AM-1PM

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD Get involved If you have children, you may have the advantage of meeting people at school functions or at the bus stop. Volunteer with the PTA/PTO or sign up to coach youth sports or serve as a scout leader. These opportunities will help expand the number of people you meet in your new community.
• Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to sleep.
We make it easy for you to GO GREEN…
• Never run your car engine for more than a few moments in a garage, even if the door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up quickly and can spread to the living area of your home.
We will recycle your old phone books and magazines.
• Look for clues that home appliances may be malfunctioning. Common indicators include decreased hot water supply, soot on appliances, moisture inside windows, and furnaces not heating properly.
Simply bring them in to our Avon Office only during regular business hours. Our production team will shred and bundle this paper for trucking to the mill.
• Have your chimney, fireplace and woodstoves inspected before every heating season.
• Install at least one carbon monoxide detector, connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7, on every level of your home. Real protection comes from ADT—keeping your family safe from poisonous CO gas that can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and possibly death if undetected.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Dec. 16, 1773, in Boston Harbor, a group of Massachusetts colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians board three British tea ships and dump 342 chests of tea into the harbor. The raid was in protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773, which granted the East India Company a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade. On Dec. 19, 1843, Charles Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol” is published. Dickens was sent to work in a factory at age 12 when his father was thrown into debtors’ prison. On Dec. 22, 1864, Union Gen. William Sherman presents the city of Savannah, Georgia, to President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman captured the key Confederate port after his famous March to the Sea from Atlanta.

Travel Trends To Inspire Your 2020 Vacation Planning (NAPS)—Some things never change when it comes to traveling with friends and family, but every year new trends arise as travelers discover new places and ways to travel. With data and insights from its global vacation rental marketplace, Vrbo identified where, how and why Americans will travel for vacation in 2020. Up-and-coming destinations Travelers are always looking for “off-the-beaten path” or “hidden gem” destinations for their next trip. The top emerging domestic destinations all have one thing in common: the great outdoors. From ghost towns to sea islands, adventurous travelers are visiting places like Big Bend National Park, Olympic National Park and Chattahoochee National Forest. “This is the third year in a row travelers’ desire to be outdoors has filled the up-and-coming destinations list,” said Vrbo Travel Expert Melanie Fish. “Clearly, people want the comforts of a home away from home while soaking in scenery.” On the rise: same-city stays Same-city stays refer to people booking vacation rentals in their own city—not to be confused with staycations, which involve staying at your own home. The top single place that Chicago Vrbo renters come from is Chicago, and that rings true for a number of major American cities, including Philadelphia, Dallas and Atlanta. Another emerging travel phenomenon may come into play: celecations, when families and friends gather to celebrate special occasions. People who live in town may rent a vacation home to host and comfortably accommodate groups of guests for a holiday or a milestone life event. Hottest international beach destinations Where are trendsetting travelers heading to the beach in 2020? Portugal. The country took three of the top five spots on Vrbo’s list of international beach destinations: Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto and Lisbon. Portugal is known for its affordability and for some of the best waves in Europe. Other destinations include Chania, Greece and Catania, Italy. Drivable destinations: moving up More Americans are taking short-stay vacations of two or three days—likely an outgrowth of flexible time-off policies and prioritization of experiences with people over material goods. Whether it’s a long weekend or a day trip, an exceptional vacation destination is less than a tank of gas away! In fact, Vrbo’s top five short-stay destinations are all less than 300 miles away from the top origin markets that guests were traveling from. From urban getaways to nature escapes, travelers are taking short trips to these top destinations: St. Louis; McCurtain County (Broken Bow), Okla.; Newton County, Ark.; Grays Harbor County, Wash. and Ruidoso, New Mexico. KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS Buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, celebrants should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it’s not possible to cut your own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided.

Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. DEAR DR. ROACH: My boyfriend recently was diagnosed with an aneurysm. The report says the abdominal aorta is 3.02 cm in largest dimension and recommends screening every six months. Do we need to see a cardiologist for a second opinion? Is there medication to help? -- B.S. ANSWER: The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body. It comes directly off the left ventricle of the heart and supplies blood to the entire body. It may become enlarged either in the chest (a thoracic aneurysm) or in the abdomen. Abdominal aortic aneurisms are more common in men, especially over 65, and smoking is the biggest risk factor. There are contributing familial conditions as well, such as Marfan syndrome. Most people have an abdominal aorta that is no bigger than 3 cm, so your boyfriend is just barely over the cutoff. His risk for rupture, the dreaded complication of an AAA, is negligible at this size. I agree with the screening recommendations, and would advise tobacco cessation if he smokes, regular moderate exercise and control of blood pressure if high. Seeing a cardiologist would be very reasonable: Your boyfriend could get personalized advice on risk reduction. Although aspirin and statin drugs may have a benefit, the evidence for it is weak. Most experts do not recommend them unless there are other indications for taking them.
COOKING FOR A HOLIDAY CROWD Think about adding “safety” items to the menu that can be pulled out in a pinch and don’t require much prep work. These can include cheese and crackers, extra bread, nuts, olives, or pretzels.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a hernia operation in 2015. The repair included insertion of mesh patches that now have been recalled. Since the operation, I have had many health issues. Is there a blood test or other test to see if the mesh is the cause of my problems? Should I have it removed and replaced? I am 83. -- J.C.L. ANSWER: Surgical mesh is commonly used in hernia repair, as well as in many gynecologic surgeries. Mesh reduces the need for re-operation. However, there is an increased rate of long-term complications that partially offsets the benefit of using mesh. Complications related to the mesh can be very serious, such as bowel obstruction, perforation or bleeding; these usually require urgent surgery. However, symptoms also may be less specific, and include pain, non-healing wounds and infection. Of people with a mesh repair, 4% to 6% had evidence of complications after five years of follow-up, according to a well-done study from Denmark. I am aware of recalled mesh products (49 out of the top 50 results on a web search were from personal injury law firms; the 50th was from the Food and Drug Administration) and reports of significantly higher complication rates from recalled (as well as from counterfeit) mesh. Without knowing more about your health issues, it is difficult to weigh in on whether the mesh is likely to be causing it. There is no simple blood or imaging test that will give a definitive answer. However, if your symptoms are among those possibly related to mesh complication, it absolutely would be appropriate to have a discussion with your surgeon about the upsides and downsides of a re-operation. I would be cautious about recommending another surgery for an 83-year-old, unless the symptoms are significant and your surgeon feels they are likely due to mesh complications.

Coping with Holidays after Loss By Amanda Dudek
W
hile the holiday season is a beautiful time of year, it can also be very difficult for those who have lost a loved one. “Dansville has had a lot of loss this year, from our four teenagers and twenty-one-year-old young lady to the passing away of several of our elderly friends and neighbors,” said Pastor Nilla Owen. “This community has experienced a lot of grief.” On Wednesday evening, December 18th, the Dansville Ministerial Alliance will hold Blue Christmas, a special service for those grieving the loss of a loved one, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. “The Scriptures and songs recognize that sometimes life is hard,” said Owen. “A service like this helps people pray and talk to God about how difficult that is because sometimes, you don’t have the words.” “When everyone seems to be celebrating and having a good time, if you have lost someone months or even years before, Christmas can be very hard,” observed Pastor Owen of the Dansville and Sparta Center United Methodist Churches. Gene Griffing, PhD, of TreeHawks Counseling, explained, “These ideas might help some people get through the holidays, while others may find them upsetting,” noting that each person’s loss experience is unique. Griffing reminds those struggling with loss not to be afraid of seeking out professional assistance in processing their grief.
Tips for the Holidays after Bereavement: § Plan Ahead. Sit down with your loved ones and talk about what each wants to do for the holidays. Let relatives and friends know your decisions. § Shopping. Shop by catalog, phone or internet. Shop with a friend or ask someone to shop for you. Give gift certificates or donate to a worthy cause in memory of your loved one. § Take Care of Yourself. Be careful of “shoulds”. Try to put balance in your life; get adequate rest, eat well, exercise, take a walk, read, pray and relax. § Holiday Activities. Consider buying baked goods or doing without, using fewer decorations or asking family or friends to decorate, top cleaning (it is not necessary to scrub), sending fewer holiday cards or none at all. § Make a favorite dish. Use your loved one’s go-to recipe, if possible. § Keep tradition alive. Choose a family member to carry a loved one’s tradition forward. § Holiday Dinner. Consider making some changes: serving buffet style, eating at a different time or in a different room, going to another’s home. § Religious Services. Attend at a different time or place. Turn to your faith; try to concentrate on the meaning of the season.

§ Invitations. Family and friends may invite you to gatherings. Consider attending. Explain that you hope they will understandif you can’t attend or have to leave early. If you decide to attend, drive by yourself, sit by the door and park so you don’t get boxed in. § Express Feelings. Cry when you have to; laugh when you can. § Ask for and Accept Help. Share your concerns, feelings, and apprehensions with an understanding friend. Plan special times with people with whom you are comfortable. § Help Others. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, visit shut-ins. Invite someone who is alone to share the day with you. Provide food/gifts for the needy. § Expectations. Keep expectations of yourself and the holidays realistic. Usually, the anticipation of the holiday is worse than the day itself. § Hold on to Hope. In time, your grief will soften, but your loved one will always be a special part of your life and your holidays. Special thanks to Kathleen M. My, my, with all the chaos in the world, this rant keeps surfacing about someone assisting a handicapped person in a wheelchair, without being asked to do so. Calm down about someone being concerned about you. You really have your teeth in this. My mom was handicapped with polio, and she was an independent woman who did many things in her life. Yet, she was gracious and gladly accepted help or assistance when needed. She never viewed assistance as a form of someone having pity for her. In a world where many lack care and concern for others, I think you should appreciate the kind act of others. Also, if you don’t want help or feel it as an assault, then you can still graciously decline the kind gesture. Enjoy the life you have!

Gratitude to an honest gentleman! My heartfelt thanks to the gentleman who found my little purse in the Batavia WalMart parking lot on Monday, December 2 and immediately turned it and its contents in to the Customer Service department. It must have fallen off my arm while walking to my car. I never expected to find it already waiting for me, intact, in the few minutes it took me to return to the store. I am deeply grateful for your honesty and integrity. Have a blessed Christmas!
Pleasant surprise at the RPO concert! My wife and I were in line to get our RPO tickets at Livonia High School when a woman came up and handed us a ticket. We were stunned to find that the admission was fully paid and never had a chance to thank the woman. So, a very public Thank You for your kindness!

very appreciative of his kind and caring help. Would you rather he keeps walking by, leaving the person stranded? Your thought pattern is very odd. I hope I never have to read another rant about this again.
Time and again, a person in a wheelchair complains and apparently doesn’t appreciate the kindness that perfect strangers display toward them when they offer to help. How sad! Just a couple of days ago, my adult son inquired when he saw someone in a motorized wheelchair having difficulty. Their battery had gone dead. He was able to get help and push the person to an area where the battery could be recharged. The person was

Isn’t it a state law that when drivers use their windshield wipers that they must use their headlights as well? Wondering why police don’t ticket cars that don’t do this. Can anyone explain why every year retailers locally and nationally start pushing Christmas sales when it isn’t even Halloween yet? Plus, this year Black Friday seems to be occurring every week. Can’t we just enjoy the holiday?

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Make your holiday preparations one step at a time in order to avoid being overwhelmed and leaving things undone. That confusing family situation continues to work itself out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Ease this year’s holiday money pressures by letting your thrifty side guide you as you look for those perfect gifts that typically reflect your good taste and love of beauty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ll have a good handle on potential holiday problems if you delegate tasks to family members, friends or co-workers -- most of whom will be more than happy to help out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Right now you are especially vulnerable to holiday scams that seek to take advantage of your generosity. Best advice: Check them out before you send out your checks. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The upcoming holiday season gives the Big Cat much to purr about. Relationships grow stronger, and new opportunities loom on the horizon, just waiting to be pounced on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A changing situation brings conflicting advice about how to go forward with your holiday plans. Your best bet: Make the decision you feel most comfortable with. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans get back on track after some confusion about the direction you expected to take. A potentially troublesome money matter needs your immediate attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your holiday preparations are on track. But you need to confront a personal situation while you can still keep it from overwhelming everything else. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Tight financial matters ease a bit during this holiday season. But the sagacious Sagittarian is well-advised to keep a tight hold on the reins while shopping for gifts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t put off making decisions about this year’s holiday celebrations, despite the negative comments you’ve been getting from several quarters. Do it NOW! AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The holidays will bring new friends and new opportunities. Meanwhile, be careful to use your energy wisely as you go about making holiday preparations. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) There’s good news coming from a most unlikely source. And it could turn out to be one of the best holiday gifts you have had in years. Remember to stay positive. BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and loyalty. You make friends slowly -- but with rare exceptions, they’re in your life forever.
