REVIEWS HAVE ON BUSINESSES.

Body & Mind ____________________17 Classifieds ____________________42 Employment ____________________37

Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review.

Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Page 2

Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to offer positive feedback. Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services. Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect. Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an effort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased. Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

VISION GREATLY AFFECTS DRIVING ABILITY Driving is a multisensory experience that requires careful coordination and mastery of a wide array of skills. Understanding the rules of the road and having sufficient practice are only part of the equation. Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys. Acceptable vision is involved in all components of driving. Motor vehicle operators need to have clear vision to read gauges and operate the controls of the car. Distance vision also is essential to identifying road hazards and seeing other cars on the road. The health resource All About Vision says aging and visual changes at any age can affect a person’s ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Many motor vehicle agency vision tests do not take into consideration all of the factors that can impact vision while driving. Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road.

CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE FOR ST. PATTY’S DAY Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal. March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef and cabbage, even though the dish may have little to do with Ireland (and even less to do with St. Patrick). The precise origins of the link between corned beef and St. Patrick’s Day remain a topic of debate, but some historians say the corned beef enjoyed today can be traced to New York City’s Irish immigrant population in the 19th and 20th centuries, who popularized a salted meat made from brisket that was then sold by Jewish butchers.

Regardless of the authenticity of its link to Ireland, corned beef is delicious and many modern Paddy’s Day celebrants wouldn’t think of going without it on March 17.

DANSVILLE POP UP PANTRY TO PROVIDE MUCH-NEEDED FOOD ON MONDAY BY A M A N DA D U D E K

I

t’s no secret that the advent of the Covid pandemic has only created more food insecurity, both among those in need and among those who had not previously been struggling. As the first quarter of 2022 draws to a close, many families continue to face food insecurity thanks to rising food costs, the economy, and the state of global markets, among other factors. In areas like Livingston County for example, the most recent census data shows just over 10% of families live in poverty. To combat food insecurity in and around the Dansville area, UR Medicine/Noyes Health and The Hornell Area Family YMCA have joined together to host a Pop Up Pantry on Monday, March 14th. The pantry event will be held at Babcock Park from 4PM to 6PM. This extraordinarily necessary effort has received support from the entire community, including such community partners as TOPS Friendly Markets, Dansville Lions Club International, FoodLink, Dansville Rotary Club International, and Rentals to Go. Dansville’s Pop Up Pantry expects to distribute fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products, and other perishable and nonperishable foods. Spearheading this event are Tara Coffey, Manager of Community Outreach Services at UR Medicine | Noyes Health, Shane Marble, intern from Alfred University, and Julie Camacho, Dansville Branch Coordinator at Hornell Area Family YMCA. “Foodlink expects to provide a large truck fi lled with approximately 11-12 pallets, an abundance of food,” Coffey shared, also recognizing community outreach support from the United Way. She explained that several members of the community have wished to hold such an event for some time, with the last being held more than a year ago. “We wanted to hold an event in the fall, but there was no way we could do something this big without more planning,” Coffey explained. “Our goal is to feed 100 families.”

“I have been working here for about 20 years, and I have seen the need. It is hugely important for everyone out there, especially with Covid which has destroyed savings and disrupted support networks.” - Tara Coffey

Shane Marble, an Alfred State intern working with Coffey, has been essential in laying the groundwork for Dansville’s upcoming Pop Up Pantry. “I was born and raised in Dansville,” said Marble, an adult student in the fi nal semester of his Human Services Management degree. When Marble looked for more to do, Coffey suggested the Pop Up Pantry. Marble was immediately invested.

“Helping people is my passion. I grew up in a single-parent home, so I know what it is like to struggle for food,” he said, explaining how he jumped right in. “I think the first day [Coffey] gave [this project] to me, I talked with both the Chief of Police and the Mayor to see if we would be able to hold the event at Babcock.” “I spoke with Dansville Fire Chief Brian Wood to get those important permissions,” Marble continued. “I also spoke with Laura Cutting, a social worker at Dansville Central School. She gave me a whole list of people to contact, such as the Rotary, Lions Club, and Boy Scouts. Now, we have about 20 volunteers signed up for the event with 10 more coming at this point. The whole town really jumped on it with the Dansville Lions Club committing seven volunteers right off the bat: our biggest bunch!”

(l-r) Shane Marble, intern from Alfred State, Julie Camacho, Dansville Branch Coordinator at Hornell Area Family YMCA, and Tara Coffey, Manager of Community Outreach Services at UR Medicine | Noyes Health.

Marble explained that Coffey has been handling the administrative planning and paperwork for the event. Meanwhile, Dansville YMCA Coordinator Julie Camacho became certified to be the Pop Up Pantry coordinator on the ground during the event. “We are trying to build a solid foundation so that when my internship is up, we have a reliable base of names, numbers, and volunteers to continue these events on a bi-monthly basis,” Marble concluded. Coffey and Marble both clearly see such food distribution events as ongoing necessities. “The Livingston County Department of Health is currently conducting a food insecurity survey,” explained Coffey. “I have been working here for about 20 years, and I have seen the need. It is hugely important for everyone out there, especially with Covid, which has destroyed savings and disrupted support networks.” Coffey credits Marble for his efforts in making the event a reality. “I believe we couldn’t make this happen without Shane!” affirmed Coffey. Her sentiments of gratitude extend to the whole community, as well. “All of the organizations in Dansville have been so willing to step up,” said Coffey as Marble agreed. “I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to them and to all of our volunteers for making this all happen.” This is a drive thru event; trunks must be able to be opened. Boxes and bags will not be included. If you would like your food bagged or boxed, please bring some with you. For additional questions, please email Julie Camacho jcamacho@hornellymca.com

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FUN FOR YOUNGSTERS

Why Wait? Call Me Today!

St. Patrick’s Day and Irish culture in particular is synonymous with music, and there may be no better way to stoke kids’ enthusiasm for St. Patrick’s Day than to introduce them to Irish music. Check out local entertainment venues to see if there are any Irish-inspired concerts on tap. If possible, find shows geared toward youngsters that encourage them to participate by singing along or dancing as the musicians play. Kids who seem especially inspired can even be encouraged to learn an instrument associated with Irish music, such as the banjo, tin whistle or violin.

CLIP & SAVE MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, cuisine, hosts should not overlook the importance of providing some staples that people have grown to expect on March 17. Corned beef and cabbage might not be the most authentic Irish meal, but it’s become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and therefore earned its place on your Paddy’s Day menu. Hosts can start the day off right by whipping up a pre-parade traditional Irish breakfast, complete with eggs, Irish bacon, white and black pudding, and brown bread. Hosts need not feel beholden to cuisine exclusive to Ireland or those that have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but making sure at least one such dish is available is guaranteed to please your guests.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Before You Sign Up for Senior Discounts We all want to save a dollar every place we can. Discounts aimed at seniors are a good way to get our attention, but now and then it’s just not a good idea to sign up. For example, if you’re low income, Amazon Prime offers a reduced-price membership. With Prime you get free shipping, access to movies and music, and more. Your membership is only $5.95 per month -- after you furnish an image of your Social Security, Medicaid (not Medicare), TANF or SNAP card. You’ll need to renew this every year to keep getting the discount to ensure you’re still on the program. You can stay on this reduced rate for four years. The dilemma is that you’re providing your personal information -- Medicaid number, Social Security number and so on -- to people you don’t know. Where does that information end up? If you cancel your membership, is that information destroyed? Reduced prescription costs are available at certain drugstore chains, but generally on a limited basis, perhaps one day per month. One chain will offer to let you link a new account with them to your existing AARP membership. With another one, should you prefer not to give them your email address, they’re more than happy to take your name and phone number instead. A number of phone companies have reduced plans for seniors. But they do verify your age. With two of them you need to go into the store with a valid ID. DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

Cornea: The cornea is the clear covering of the eye. The National Eye Institute notes that, unlike most other tissues in the body, the cornea does not contain blood vessels to provide nourishment or protection against infection. By donating their corneas, donors can help restore sight to people who lost theirs due to disease or injury.

Impacted wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth are a dental milestone that takes place between the ages of 17 and 21. Wisdom teeth actually are third molars, and are given the name because they come in at a mature age, according to the American Dental Association. If there isn’t enough space for them, wisdom teeth can cause crowding and pain. When molars do not fully erupt, the result is impacted wisdom teeth, which can be very painful.

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read another sad story about a woman who had breast cancer, fought it and seemed to win, but after five years, it came back and took her life. The same sequence of events happened to my wife two years ago. She fought the second round of cancer for a year and a half, but it was just about everywhere. What is this connection between the initial breast cancer occurrence and it coming back five or six years later even more widespread throughout the body? Is screening stepped up during that period? -- Anon. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your wife. With most cancers, no evidence of disease five years out from diagnosis usually means a cure, that the person will not have a recurrence of that particular cancer, although people who’ve had one cancer are at a higher risk of developing a second, unrelated cancer. Breast cancer is one of the exceptions. Late recurrences (after five years) are possible, even very late recurrences. I have seen 20 years afterward, and there are reports of even longer. Although the reasons why breast cancer seems to hide for many years are not known precisely, we do know some risk factors for recurrence: Larger tumors are more likely to recur. Those with positive lymph nodes are at high risk, and women with estrogen receptor positive, progesterone receptor positive and HER2 negative tumors are more likely to experience recurrence. Screening is absolutely appropriate in women who have had breast cancer. There is not a consensus about the type and frequency of screening, but many experts choose yearly mammography. Breast MRI has been considered, but it has not been proven to be better in women with a history of breast cancer. A healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, abstinence from smoking and minimal alcohol intake, has been shown to reduce cancer risk in women with a history of breast cancer.

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

While in the fire department Jim served as First Assistant Chief for 2 Chiefs and for a short time as Chief. Upon his honorable discharge, Jim enlisted in the United States Army Reserves and retired from the reserves in 1995 with a total of 32 years of military service with a rank of Sergeant Major. Jim was a Wayland Police Officer for 14 years, 2 years as a town of Hornellsville Police Officer, and finally for the Painted Post Police Department, retiring in 1995. WHY BUY LIFE INSURANCE? Facing one’s mortality and the prospect of leaving family members behind is not always easy. Death, financial security and planning for the future are all difficult subjects, but planning ahead can make matters much easier in the long run. Life insurance needs frequently come up when making plans, and many people find that purchasing a life insurance policy is a worthwhile investment. Life insurance holds an important place in overall financial planning. One of the most apparent benefits of life insurance is that it will provide a considerable sum of cash upon the insured’s death, which can be put toward the cost of funeral arrangements, housing and dependent care. Beyond end-of-life bills and care, life insurance can offer other advantages, say the experts at Allstate Insurance Company. Life insurance can provide a family with a financial safety net. When a beneficiary is named, life insurance can serve as an inheritance for that person or people. Heirs may face estate taxes after a loved one dies, and life insurance benefits may help offset all or a portion of the costs. There may be benefits to life insurance while a person is living as well. The life insurance information site Term Life 2 Go says that, depending on the policy, life insurance can be borrowed against to pay off debt, buy a house or live off of dividends from the life insurance investment. This can provide a source of supplemental retirement income. Gateway Financial advisors say that many life insurance plans are extremely flexible and can be modified as needs change. Death benefits may be decreased if desired, and premiums can be skipped, reduced or increased.

Jim’s family and friends may call Saturday, March 12, 2022 from 11am2pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Jim’s funeral service will be Saturday at 2pm at the funeral home. Committal prayers, military honors and interment will take place immediately following at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Wayland.

Business owners also can use life insurance policies to their advantage. Including life insurance with the list of other benefits offered to prospective employees can entice top-notch candidates. Sole proprietors may use life insurance as a business continuation plan so that insurance proceeds can keep the business in the black until it is sold or a replacement owner is found.

Contributions in memory of James F. Ruscitto may be made to the Wayland Fire Department, 14 East Naples St., Wayland, NY 14572 or to the Campbell Fire Department, 4795 Church St., Campbell, NY 14821.

Shopping for life insurance requires careful research and an understanding of the products available. Consumers should have a thorough understanding of term and whole life policies, what premiums will cost, what the death benefit will pay, and if there are any living benefits. For example, living benefits may cover some costs for chronically or terminally ill people.

They didn’t have to do what they did, and most businesses wouldn’t have. It was very heartwarming to see, and I for one applaud them. A great example of customer service and compassion. My Fair Lady Cheers to the Rochester Broadway Theatre League for bringing to Rochester the musical “My Fair Lady.” What a wonderful show it was, and I liked it even better than the original movie! Shout out to all of the fire, EMT, and other emergency responders for their hard work during the wind storm on Sunday. You are appreciated!

No Denying I’m confused regarding this back and forth about global warming. Who’s denying it? We all know it’s changing. The only question is how much does man really impact these changes? Sure, there’s a lot we can do to lessen our impact, but the changes of warming and cooling have been proven over and over again to be a part of our planet’s history. So, who’s denying it? Local Dog Walker It is great that you pick up after your dog when you walk our local neighborhood. However, it would be really great if you also took that little black bag back home with you! Today while walking, one of the people in the neighborhood put your 10 bags (yes 10 bags), in the middle of the sidewalk and this from just a short distance of a walk for most of us. We are all looking for you, and when we find you, the local police and dog warden will also know you. Why is it so hard to take the bag back home with you like a responsible person? The people’s lawns that you leave the little packages on are really tired of them. There is a law, you know, and you are not above it. We know it is from one person, and everyone is on the look out for you. Clean up and take your bags home. This is also your neighborhood, but you are not a good neighbor, that is for sure. Choices In response to Choose One: No, we should use either paper or plastic, metal or glass wherever appropriate. Paper bags, plastic cars? Yes, I hate to see a tree come down, but trees (and wood and paper) are renewable resources; oil is not. Paper is biodegradable; plastic is not. It’s that simple. We should choose the ones that are least damaging to the environment case by case.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Surrendering a Pet DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When my grandmother passed away last fall, she left behind two beautiful cats. No one else in the family wanted to take care of them, so I took them in. However, I’m financially unable to care for them long-term, and the apartment complex I live in does not allow pets. I’m on borrowed time (and money) at this point, and praying that my apartment manager doesn’t find out about the cats. I contacted a shelter nearby to find out if they will accept the cats. They said there is a “surrender fee” of $200. No way can I pay that; I’m on a fixed income. What alternatives do I have? -- Sherrie R., via email DEAR SHERRIE: I’m sorry to hear about your predicament. You have extended your home and finances to care for two cats in need, and I salute you for it. But you’re right: the current situation is not ideal for you or the cats. When preparing to surrender a pet, the receiving shelter will request that you try every possible option first. Many shelters will provide advice and limited assistance for pet owners going through this. One option would be for you to contact family members and friends directly (not on public social media posts) to ask if they would be able to adopt the cats. If a surrender to the shelter is the last resort, contact your family to see if they can chip in for the surrender fees. After all, you’ve already taken on the cost of food, supplies and maybe medical care for them. You’ve taken on the risk of losing your lease, too. Speak calmly with your relatives about sharing the cost. Best of luck. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

POLL How likely are you to give money towards Ukraine relief for food, clothing & shelter? • Yes! • No! Poll Ends 03-15-22 Poll Ended 03-08-22 Some say the United States should not send troops into the Russia-Ukraine conflict because allegedly Ukraine is of strategic importance to the United States, many Americans do not want a war, and the danger of a superpower confrontation. Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine?

Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or threeseason room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE

Job Description: • Take Customer Orders • Oversee the compliance of Driver DOT log Books • Batch Concrete (training will be provided)

Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.

Requirements: 3-5 Years of related work experience in construction atmosphere. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, and be able to multi task. Computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). High School Diploma or GED. Must be able to read and write English. Must be able to work some Saturdays.

Competitive Salary based on experience. • Signing bonus. Apply by sending Resume by email to: KMullen@SpallinaMaterials.com Spallina Materials Inc., 1 Conlon Ave, Mt. Morris, NY 14510

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Request changes to work schedules. While technology may have largely eliminated the separation between the office and home, working parents can use that to their advantage by asking their employees to alter their work schedules. Telecommuting one or two days a week can help parents feel more connected to their families, while flex schedules can ensure working parents don’t miss any of their children’s dance recitals or weekday afternoon ballgames.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB Pressure-free: Regardless of what retirees did for a living prior to calling it a career, chances are they dealt with work-related stress. In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 percent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 percent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders.

An employee in this class has charge of the professional and non-professional personnel assigned to a shift in order to meet the total needs of the patient.
